What Darren Criss Loved This Year in Culture
The long tail of Glee grew this year when Darren Criss won a Tony for his work as a robot falling in love in Maybe Happy Ending. The musical was the story of the theatrical season — starting off with low attendance, then becoming a hit and a Best Musical winner, largely off the strength of word-of-mouth and Criss’s enduring star power.
1. What were your favorite movies of the year?
Ballad of Wallis Island. A special little film. Funny, touching, crazy charming. Great premise and wonderful cast. Gem of the year.
2. Best TV shows?
The Boyfriend— a really sweet Japanese reality dating show. It was the country’s first same-sex dating program. Even though it was released last year, it was such a source of light and joy for the beginning of my 2025.
3. The comfort show you couldn’t stop watching?
The Gilded Age is so grand and delicious that I lap it all up with a Carrie Coon Silver Spoon™.
4. Favorite albums or songs?
It’s hard not to give it up for Sabrina Carpenter and the rapturous alchemy she’s found with Amy Allen and John Ryan. They all seem to bring the best out of each other. Excellent songwriting, excellent record-making, and I know it’s a dirty word but I really don’t mind it if you’re great at it (and Sabrina is great at it) — excellent branding. The last two albums and the way they’ve connected to millions is a direct result of pure talent and hard work really hitting a major stride.
5. The books you couldn’t put down?
This book came out in 2020, but I read it this year. Before it was recommended to me, the title alone wouldn’t have been something I’d have ever checked out: Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money: Timeless Lessons on Wealth, Greed, and Happiness. It’s less explicitly about money and more about human behavior as it pertains to potentially beneficial or detrimental financial outlooks and decisions. As an actor, I love it when any topic that seems out of my depth is taken by an expert and distilled down to the much more understandable viewpoint of relatable human habits, which Housel does in spades.
6. Plays or musicals that stuck with you?
The Broadway production of Punch is every bit its namesake. A powerful punch of a story that tackles the nearly impossible challenge of showing compassion in the face of the unforgivable and posits a strong endorsement for the mostly unheard-of merits of restorative justice.
7. How about podcasts or video games?
I’ve been a massive fan of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast for as long as podcasts have been around, and while I’m sad it ended its run this year, I’m grateful for Maron leaving us nearly 2,000 hours worth of great interviews with some pretty extraordinary people from the last 15 years or so.
In the rare times when I have a moment to myself and I don’t have to tend to anything else that requires my attention, I will always relish getting to dive back into Hyrule and knock out side quests for as long as I’m able to with my guy Link and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
8. The best performance in a movie, TV show, and/or at the theater?
I’d like to give a big shout-out to two outstanding performances, both of which are Off Broadway, one-woman shows from this fall: the exquisite Jen Tullock in Nothing Can Take You From the Hand of Godand the fabulous Dylan Mulvaney in The Least Problematic Woman in the World. One a drama and the other a comedy. Jen has always been an acting force, and this play showcases all of her cylinders firing off at once. Mulvaney knocked the balance of humor and vulnerability out of the park.
9. The most underrated work of art of the year?
Petey USA’s The Yips. He’s has been on the mainstream DL for years now. Hilarious content creator. Smart songwriter. Incredible performer. Great music with heart, humor, vulnerability, and most important, singularity. His figurative and actual “voice” stick out like a painted thumb hitchhiking to your favorite person’s crazy house party. Petey is the real deal.
10. Most memorable concert?
Beyoncé was iconic. Katy was wild. Gaga was fierce. Sabrina was dope.
11. The one thing you couldn’t stop talking about or recommending to others?
How Maybe Happy Ending is the greatest possible thing that could be happening for me personally, professionally, creatively, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. And just how insanely grateful I am to be in it. I can’t shut up about it. I’m not sure if that’s a direct recommendation per se, but it’s an unavoidable talking point I’ve repeated over and over that hopefully has piqued folks’ interest enough to see what it is I’m going on and on about.
12. Best movie-theater experience?
Seeing my pal David Corenswet be Superman himself up on the big screen just plastered the biggest smile on my face. I think my facial muscles are still recovering.

On Monday, November 17 at Litteraturhuset in Stavanger Tarjei together with playwrights Even Torgan and Tine Skjold ,and fellow actor Hamza Kader will talk about their process from idea to premiere of "skyt meg" and how they work with socially relevant themes, audience interaction and their ever-living dramatic text.
3 weeks before the premiere, the script is still not finished. At Litteraturhuset, we invite you to a conversation with the playwrights and their actors, to take a closer look at the playwright's writing process. What happens when a script is largely created on the floor and not just in the Word document? What happens when the free field of theater and its methods invade the institutions? How much research is enough research when dealing with social problems on on stage? And when can something really be called drama?
