Some thoughts on acceleration and force
I presented this in the order of how I slowly understood the trick of delivering force - first an abstract concept of impact taught by Ah Fai, then a more complicated discovery on the acceleration pattern, last back to a more abstract concept of breakdowns.
Like I’ve previously stressed, 2D animation is everything but one single approach. There’s no one rule that rules them all, but interchangeable ideas with math, or physics, or music, etc. There’s no “perfect” animation either, but what is perceived as organic and dynamic. E.g., using the Fibonacci numbers to animate didn’t bring me a perfect animation! On the other hand, a tiny change in the pattern could already make the feeling of force so much more powerful.
Not so much of a tutorial than a personal experience. I hope you find this interesting hahaha

Made this for a friend who needed some help with fire animation, figured it might be useful to someone else
this is how I approach any fire animation I do timing-wise and design wise. if I am doing something more cartoony I will use shapes that are suited to more flowing smooth transitions and a nice graphic look, if I am animating more realistically I will use more chaotic timing and a design that works better with the slight motion blur I always apply to realistic fire. real fire doent flow nice and smooth like water or smoke when viewed at real-time
I almost always animate fire on 1′s, though the cartoony fire can work on 2′s, you just have to be more careful of pops.
you can also animate more realistic fire with a slower timing, you wouldn’t want the above fire in the background of a calm scene. this is just an example using an extreme case.
Hope this helps someone who is struggling to rough animate fire that fits their specific style and scene timing.
So I wrote and animated this tutorial for people working on my short film Bothered, but I figured it would be useful for all animators, particularly beginners. I borrowed some of these concepts from this awesome packet done by Jon Hooper and Michel Gagne, which is also pretty great!

Idk if other people experience this but I have this weird sense of self vis a vis my body where I think it’s both bigger and smaller than it actually is, somehow at once. It’s been getting better because I’ve been working on it, but oh man when I was younger?
It sucked so bad. I was simultaneously insecure about being the fat kid and in severe denial that I was the fat kid. I had all these standards, benchmarks I “wasn’t allowed” to pass, like “stay under 200lbs”, “don’t let your stomach stick out more than your boobs”, “as long as you’re not as fat as x”, dumb shit like that.
I still hate being seen by people doing mostly everything, but especially eating and exercising. I feel like I’m constantly being judged, constantly on display.

An exercise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is to ask yourself what the best and worst case scenarios are for a situation that you’re struggling with. Just let yourself go absolutely wild out there. Then, with both extremely unlikely extremes in mind, what’s the realistic middle?
It’s often not as bad as you were fearing.
Fat bodies are treated as disgusting oddities, dirty, lumpy, off-putting things. Even thin people suffer under a system that punishes people for not fitting a “norm” that no human being can actually reliably obtain. TV, magazines, books, all are filled with impossibly thin bodies. Sometimes, “curvy” bodies appear, but they too look nothing like reality.
Your bodily sense of self splits in two - a delusion that you can be fat but the right way, you compare your ratios to the ideal and pretend that you’re smaller, if you stand like this, if you don’t eat that day, if if if. And then you’re formless, body parts distended and distorted to unreal proportions, you’re not just fat, you’re flabby, you’re obese, you sag and drag yourself across the ground, praying that no one looks.
They’re always looking. Someone’s looking, someone’s judging you, their gaze is inescapable and they hate you.
You know who’s looking.
You avoid the mirrors so you don’t see them looking back.
