Crossword puzzles are a good time sink. Between practice games and daily chores, Darius had plenty of time to kill. It’s off-season, after all. Why was he drafted into a basketball team, anyways? He wore a jersey once in his life...

Whatever. He’s good at it, and it’s money so he won’t complain.

What does warrant some complaint is the absurd difficulty of this crossword puzzle. Darius finds himself stumped on one particular question, unable to dig out an answer containing the correct number and composition of letters to fit into the rest of the grid. Idly, he taps his pencil on paper, facial expression mirroring thoughtfulness as he mulls over any possible answer--

He has it. Not at all mindful of the person sharing the park’s bench with him, he blurts the answer aloud with a fist slammed into his lap.

“Cryptid!” He spoke a tad too loudly. Almost as if he were self conscious of the matter, he murmured to himself with a pen to his lips. “How the hell was I supposed to piece that one together?”

Ferris wheels call for two or more patrons on its carts. That’s something of a drawback. 

Pastel hues surround him. He sticks out like a sore thumb. Don’t children and their parents visit amusement parks? Or lovers on their thrilling escapades made for two? And yet, Darius travels these colorful roads on his own. He travels with a destination in mind. All parks have one.

A ferris wheel.

A vantage point would be optimal. With an aerial view of his surroundings, he could possibly pinpoint where he is in the world. Who knows, maybe he’ll find something else worth visiting along the way. The environment seemed all too perfect for his liking; It’s relatively uncomfortable for a war-forged general, a world lacking in conflict and tension should not exist as it does now. He felt it necessary to slowly chip away at what makes the city and its surroundings so perfect.

Now, ferris wheels typically require two or more passengers per cart, so Darius had to claim his seat with another to join him, the next person in line. No words would be exchanged between the two at first. There’s little need for idle chitchat right now. It wasn’t until the stalling could be felt beneath their britches as the ride hiccups to a complete halt. The cart they both rode was far from its apex, so getting to see the city’s skyline from beyond the canopies was next to impossible. Darius’s brows furrowed, eyes fixated on the barely-seen skyline. It’s become all too real that not only is he stuck on a ride, he’s stuck on a ride with a complete stranger.

“Well, crap.”

Words hold no meaning lest the intent to act upon them isn’t far behind.

Just by listening to this smaller girl speak her mind is enough for Darius to deduce that she meant business. Harsh words were tossed around like nothing. They held no weight to her. No consequence was too great for her to handle. The Noxian general simply finds himself in an unorthodox setting bearing witness to a brutality most accurately described as ‘a toy poodle putting boxers in their place’.

It’s definitely an interesting thing to witness.

Darius’s notion to initiate conversation came quite a few moments after the act has been committed, occupying himself with a previously purchased drink and a feint of waiting for public transportation to make its stop. The idea was to get her alone. 

For a larger man to simply approach a significantly smaller (and probably younger) woman would look bad on his end. Simply, he elects to speak up from where he stands, intending for her to catch his words loud and clear.

“Was all that necessary?”

Was he concerned? Not exactly. Nowhere in his tone of voice dictated any concern for the poor saps who found themselves on the wrong side of her heel. All that existed was a state of morbid curiosity.
