could you explain the gradient bit a little more? :o

Sure! I’ll use that more recent image since I don’t know if I can find the sai file for haruka again oops, but I used the same process for both!

I’m also going to put it under a readmore because tumblr is really not liking my images OTL

Here’s what it looks like without the gradient –I tend to use pretty contrasting colors, and I also usually do all of my shading in one layer – so it’s a bit too dramatic. Adding a gradient sort of simulates a more natural shadow.

this is what the gradient layer looks like! I usually just use the base shadow color at around 50%. I just use the pen tool and blur it in sai, but using an airbrush would get the same effect.

For this to look right, it’s best to put the gradients where shadows would naturally fall. I pretty much always put them under the bangs and on the neck/under the jaw, since there are almost always shadows there. But it depends on your light source!

And here’s what they look like together! the shading layer still stands out a lot, but I feel like the gradients make a softer transition. Kind of. Really, I just think it looks nice! I hope that helped ;;

tbh if i was you i'd tweet to him about how it got kicked out for low effort and how that makes you feel as a fan. even tho its his mods doing it, he shouldn't be condoning that imo like it's...fanwork

idk i guess if he doesn’t reply to my first tweet i might try and make a big deal about it. but i feel like most people won’t care because it’s not some epic 3D model job or massive artwork that’s so beautiful so it probably does look ‘low effort’ to somebody who doesn’t realize how much work it takes

yeah and some fucker who did pen doodles on graph paper got his stuff shown on stream and talked about? but apparently my wallpaper/brb screen edit, where I took the time to photoshop numerous efforts and basically recreate an album cover from scratch, is ‘low effort’ and can’t be submitted. i tweeted it to him, but it’s not the same as having him geek out about it on stream, so, i’m kinda bummed out
