Sorry to keep you waiting. We were stuck down a tunnel covered in gloop

Peter Capaldi apologizing for he and Jenna Coleman being late to the script read-thru for Listen (February 11, 2014)

Four years ago this week, the writers and cast of Doctor Who gathered together for the script read-thru of one of my favorite episodes featuring the Twelfth Doctor and Clara…Listen.

Listen was to be one of the two episodes forming Block Two of the eighth series of Doctor Who. The read-thru was scheduled for 5:30pm on the 11th of February, but was pushed back because Peter and Jenna were delayed on the set of “Into the Dalek”. “Sorry to keep you waiting. We were stuck down a tunnel covered in gloop,” explained Capaldi upon arrival.

He wasn’t kidding. Once they scrubbed the “gloop” off, Jenna and Peter gave a spirited read-thru of the new script. 

Listening to Peter recite a poem about monsters lurking under beds still gives me goosebumps:

“What’s that footstep following but never passing by?”

I would have loved to be at any of these script read-thrus. Even in rehearsal, Peter and Jenna give it their all. They were so good together.
