On today’s episode of how I love JK’s choice of names: Merope Gaunt, Voldemort’s mother.
‘Merope’ isn’t a made-up name, it comes from Greek mythology, as does a lot of HP characters (such as Dedalus Diggle, Theseus Scamander, and Narcissa Malfoy).
In Greek mythology, Merope is one of the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. Atlas is similar to Marvolo Gaunt in that he was a very controlling father until he was imprisoned (Atlas is ‘imprisoned’ by being forced to hold up the world, and Marvolo is literally imprisoned by the Ministry of Magic). Their absence thus allows their daughters to be free from their rule.
However, Merope is most known for being the only one of her sisters to marry a mortal man (Sisyphus) and not a god or titan, and was shamed by her family. This parallels Merope Gaunt, who was the first of her family to marry a Muggle, and was also shamed.
This is another great example of names having power, an overarching theme of the HP books!
