Raven sat comfortably in the backseat of the car, joined by her little sister Abigail who was chirping the words to a classic rock song playing on the radio.
James smiled at the sight unfolding in his internal rear view mirror. He was relearning to appreciate all the little things he’d been missing since the hospital.
Within a few minutes, he turned his car into the parking lot of Raven and Abigail’s school. “You two have a good day. I’ll pick you up later.”
“Okay daddy. I love you!” Raven quickly snuck in a hug before skirting her way out of the backseat. Abigail followed suit.
Although Abigail didn’t have much of an opinion on the subject, Raven was excited to get back to school. The two had missed a lot of it due to the severity of the family situation. She mainly missed her friends, most notably Alana Davis.
“Raven!” Alana called from the nesting playground as they jogged towards eachother. “I’ve missed you!” She complained with a pout.
“I missed you too!” Raven smiled a bit at her best friend’s diva-ish attitude.
Alana was born a week before Raven. Ever since that day, the two have been INSEPARABLE, which was honestly expected due to their parents being particularly close.
The children of the Korn members seemingly made their own little friend group rather easily. Alana and Raven were like sisters though.
“Come on! I have so much to tell you!” Alana was now grabbing Raven’s hand and pulling her in a different direction from her actual sister.
“Sorry Abigail.” Raven chuckled quickly before she was out of earshot. The two girls made their way inside the school sharing giggles and small talk.
“Well look who finally decided to show.” A snicker echoed from behind them. Alana was confused, turning around with Raven quickly to see who the cruel sounding voice belonged to.
“What do you want, Hunter?” The moment she saw his face her gaze drew itself away. Raven HATED Hunter and the feeling was mutual.
“Lighten up.” Despite Raven’s quickening, eager pace signalling she had no interest in this conversation, Hunter obviously wasn’t giving up.
“Leave her alone Hunter!” Alana huffed, leaving a protective grip secured around Raven.
“Oh cmon Alana I’m just having some fun! You’re more riled up than she is!” Hunter was determined to provoke Alana and Raven to no end.
Without a second thought, Raven whipped her head around to face Hunter. “Go away!”
“Don’t be like that. No point in making it everybody’s problem that your Dad is a no good junkie.”
Raven stopped dead in her tracks. Pure shock and anger boiled inside her as she shot daggers at him with her eyes. “What did you just say?!”
“Raven..” Alana gently nudged, encouraging her friend to leave the situation before it escalated significantly further than it already had. “Let’s go.”
“A no good junkie.” Hunter repeated his words again, committing himself to the act of creating wounds for the purpose of salting them. “That’s all he’ll ever be. And that’s what you’ll end up as.”
Raven sighed loudly, trying to contain her rage but failing miserably. Every single emotion that was built inside her body expressed with a passionate slap to Hunter’s cheek.
“RAVEN SHAFFER!” Of course, it was just her luck that NOW a teacher finally noticed the situation. “Principal’s office! NOW!”
Raven trembled. She’d never been in trouble.
Alana attempted to intervene, but it was absolutely no use. The teacher had already made up her mind about Raven’s fate.
“Mrs Harrington?” A small voice sounded, its owner being a timid boy desperately following Raven and the angry teacher in the direction of the office. “Mrs Harrington!” He repeated upon being ignored. “It wasn’t her fault!”
“Mind your business, Samson!”
“No you don’t get it!” At this point, Raven turned her head to see the boy who was arguing in her defence. He didn’t look familiar. (Sam was a very timid and shy child. He went unnoticed by most of his peers). “Hunter was being mean to her! He was being mean!”
Raven, though afraid to speak because of the situation she was in, thanked him for his attempts with a gracious expression. She would remember this act of kindness, even though it “failed” for now.
It was a given that her parents would be called and informed of this incident. Raven sat in the office chair, her emotional eyes meeting with Hunter’s cold and distant ones.
Back at the home, James Shaffer was sat comfortably with his arm around his wife when she retrieved the ringing phone.
“Hello?” Racheal questioned into the receiver.
“Mrs Shaffer? This is Principal Rodriguez. I’m calling regarding an incident involving your daughter Raven.”
“IS SHE OKAY?” Racheal practically shouted as she stood up off the couch. James titled his head with confusion and concern as he watched his wife.
“She was involved in an altercation where she physically assaulted another student. We are going to need you and your husband to come to the school and meet with us.”
“That.. doesn’t sound like her.” Racheal bit at her nails, letting the pieces crumble under her teeth. “I’m sorry I just don’t understand.”
“Ma’am.. we will discuss this further in detail with you and your husband in my office.”
Racheal cursed herself as she hung up the phone. “Raven got into a fight.”
“Huh?” James stood himself up to his wife’s level. “I don’t..”
“She’s usually so well.. behaved. And she loves school.” Racheal scrambled for her car keys and motioned James to come with her. “She’s just been lashing out lately.” Her voice lowered at the last word before peering up at James. “Let’s go.”
“Yeah. Let’s go.” James sighed, the nervous pit in his stomach messing with him getting harder to ignore.
Soon, they arrived at the school for the meeting they’d been dragged into. Hunter’s parents were sat beside their son, clearly fuming with anger.
“Hi Mommy. Hi daddy.” Raven greeted with shame in her voice.
“Sweetie.. what happened?” Racheal discreetly whispered.
“He was saying mean things about daddy!” Raven answered out loud. “He was saying daddy is..”
“She’s lying!” Hunter cut her off. “She hit me for no reason!”
“I’m sorry I just.. I know my daughter.” Racheal said. “And I don’t understand how this happened!”
“He said daddy was nothing but a junkie!” Raven was in tears at this point, and the room got so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
“Well.. maybe he’s right.” Hunter’s mother chimed in, earning herself a fiery glance from Racheal.
“I understand there’s been alot going on at home, but violence against other students just isn’t acceptable. Raven will be suspended for a week.” Principal Rodriguez announced.
“Cmon isn’t that a little harsh?” James tried to attest, but it was of no use. The odds were stacked against them anyways. Rodriguez was best friends with Hunters parents. “She learned her lesson.”
“She defended herself!” Racheal crossed her arms over her chest in shock. “This is ridiculous!”
“I’m sorry Mrs Shaffer but my descision is final.” The woman’s voice echoed in Raven’s mind as they left the office.

James was extremely relived and excited to finally return to his own home after the lengthy hospital stay. Despite how often he reminded himself he needed to be there, it sucked.
“Welcome home daddy!” Raven’s little voice declared while she held James’s hand and walked beside him to the interiors of the house. “I missed you SO much. Never leave again!”
“I’ve missed you too sweetie.” James smiled, leaning down to hug his daughter. “I ain’t going nowhere. Don’t you worry.”
“You better not!” Raven demanded, but due to her small stature and voice it just rang as adorable to James.
“I promise.” Gently, he lifted her up into his arms. “I love you Raven.”
“I love you too daddy.” She appeared to be slightly calmer now. Abigail and Racheal were now caught up to them.
“Let’s let daddy get some rest okay?” Racheal gently suggested to her two daughters.
Abigail nodded, gently hugging James. “I’m glad you’re back home daddy.”
James carefully set down Raven, sighing happily at how wholesome she and her younger sister looked now.
As the kids went off to the living room to play, Racheal exchanged a glance with her husband, unable to control getting a little teary eyed. “Sorry I just..”
“It’s okay honey.” James whispered, softly pulling Racheal into a hug, soothingly rubbing her back. “I’m right here. I promise I’ll NEVER pull that shit again. EVER! I don’t know what I was thinking. Seeing what it did to you and the kids broke my fucking heart.”
“James don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re a great dad. And the best husband in the world. This doesn’t change that.” Racheal promised, gently kissing his lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too Racheal.” A smile shone again through him. “You are a saint for putting up with my shit all these years.”
“No comment.” Racheal joked, chuckling with a smirk plastered across her face.
James ran his hand through her hair, leaving a few more kisses on her lips before heading towards the living room where Raven and Abigail were playing.
For it only being his first day back, James fell back into his routine quite easily.
But it didn’t change his lingering guilt.
After Abigail and Raven were sound asleep in their beds was when it seemed to hit him again.
Slowly, James walked down the long hallway to his own bedroom where Racheal had already made herself comfortable. “Hi honey.”
“Hey.” Racheal smiled genuinely. “How’re you feeling?”
“Tired.” James sat at the edge of the bed, fighting back tears while staring up at the ceiling. “Just.. tired.”
“James.” No matter how much he tried, nothing got past Racheal. His wife made her way behind him, resting her head on his shoulder. “You’re an amazing Dad. And an amazing husband.”
“I don’t feel like it.” He sighed heavily. “No matter what I can’t get how much I’ve let you all down out of my fucking head Racheal!”
“James!” Racheal repeated his name in a more intense, serious manner this time around. His tear filled eyes stared into hers. “Please. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”
“Easier said then done.” James sighed, but he knew his wife was right. Demonizing his own mental health and relapse wasn’t going to fix anything.
“I know.” Racheal’s soft hand stroked his cheek soothingly before kissing it. “I love you.”
“I love you too Racheal. I love you more than anything.”
“You should get some rest.” After her words left, the lips that spoke them pressed against his in a kiss.
For the first time since that conversation begun, James was able to smile genuinely. “Thank you.”
“Now. Get rest.” Racheal lied back down on her side of the bed, waiting for James to take his position beside her.
James sighed heavily, but his sleepiness was undeniable. Gently, he rested himself on the bed next to Racheal, scooping his hand under her hip to bring them closer together. “Ahh I missed this. I missed holding you.”
“I missed this too.” Racheal responded, her eyes closing the moment her head was rested on his chest. James’s fingered gently stroked her hair, an intense relief washing over him while experiencing all his favourite comforting things all over again. “I hated sleeping without you next to me.”
“I know baby.” James mumbled sleepily, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head. “I’m here now. And I PROMISE I’m not going anywhere. Never, ever again.”
Those were the final words that Racheal heard before finally falling asleep in her husband’s arms.
Note: I’ve noticed that Tumbler sometimes doesn’t show the italics as italics when I transport it over, and I use italics to signify a dream or flashback. The following is not canon and is an event that only exists in Racheal’s nightmare.
Suddenly, Racheal was back at her father and stepmoms home, the day of the overdose. Her mental load was overwhelming with her worry for James, and the pregnancy she had just found out about.
The events followed the same pattern. She woke up to the same phone call from the hospital informing her about the medical emergency that had occurred to James.
She was then teleported to the hospital where he was rushed to.
But she couldn’t see him.
Her husband, the love of her life, was clinging onto life and she couldn’t see him. Couldn’t hold him, couldn’t kiss him, couldn’t tell him she was right there and everything would be okay.
The hallways seemed to darken as fear set in more intensely. Racheal’s hands shook as she prayed.
Praying for him to live.
Heavy footsteps that sounded like bombs echoed closer to her from the hallway. It was a doctor, with a dreading hopeless look on her face.
“I’m sorry Racheal. Your husband is dead.”
The scream from Racheal’s subconscious transferred over into her awoken state. “Oh Jesus Christ..”
“Racheal!” James called out in a panic. “Are you alright? Are you hurt?” He quickly turned on the bedside lamp, the small light illuminating her tear filled eyes.
“Bad dream.” Racheal fought to catch her breath as the dream began to fade away.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” James was careful and quiet about his tone. His fingers reached out and gently stroked her back; her breathing slowly calmed under his touch.
“No.. fuck I just.. it felt so real!” She shrieked a bit, tensing up slightly.
“Sssh..” James whispered, cradling her waist in his grip as her body was now spooned against his. “It’s okay Racheal. I’m right here. Everything’s okay.”

2015
James’s eyes peeled open slowly. His ears rung loudly as he attempted to make sense of his surroundings. The last thing he remembered was their tour bus sliding off the road.
“Shit!” He cursed out in pain after trying to stand up. “Guess that’s not happening.”
“James?” Brian asked from a different area of the bus. “Is that you?”
“Yeah.” James finally managed to sit up. “Fuck my back hurts.”
“My everything hurts.” Brian sighed. “Looks like everyone’s knocked out.” He observed. They were in the middle of nowhere and panic was starting to set in even more than it already had.
“Fuck!” James shouted.
“My phones broken.” Brian sighed heavily.
“So is mine.” James answered.
“Don’t panic.” Brian looked around the now severely broken tour bus. “Maybe someone around here has one that isn’t shattered to pieces.”
“Well that’s the best idea we got.” James reluctantly agreed. He stood up, wincing in pain as he did so. “Damnit..”
“You okay?” Brian questioned with concern as he approached his bandmate.
“I need a hospital like five minutes ago.” James answered, sighing heavily as he did his best to push through the pain. As a first step, he trudged to the front of the bus. There, he found the bus driver. DEAD. “JESUS CHRIST!”
“What?!” Brian joined James’s standing position, staring right at the body alongside him. “No…”
“This is bad this is BAD!” James shrieked in fear. By now, a few others in the bus had awoken in a dazed state. “SOMEONE CALL 911!”
“James! Take a deep breath. I know this is a terrible situation..”
“Okay.” James rubbed his temples as he tried to think of another plan. The people that had woken up were multiplying. There was a common pattern though; destroyed cellphone. “Let’s go get Jonathan.”
“Kay.” Brian followed close behind James as they made their way towards Jonathan’s bunk.
“He was sleeping at the back so maybe by the grace of god his phone didn’t get completely wrecked.” James sighed, trying his best to find a little bit of hope in this. “If we can’t call for help then I guess we’re going to have to walk a million fucking miles.”
“We’ll figure something out, okay?” Brian assured him.
“Jon?” James called his bandmates name as they got closer to where he had been sleeping. “Jonathan?!” James spoke a little louder. Eventually, he was standing Infront of it. His fingers carefully pulled back the curtain.
Absolutely nothing could have prepared James or Brian for what they saw. James covered his mouth as he began to cry softly.
“NOOOOO!” Brian fell down to the floor and sobbed loudly. “THIS CAN’T BE HAPPENING!”
“FUCK!” James joined his friend before they wrapped their arms around each other in a tight embrace. “I can’t fucking believe it. This has to be a bad dream! This can’t be real!”
Brian was in such a state of shock seeing Jonathan’s body laying lifeless on the bunk bed, his suit case on the floor nearing it. His shaky hands reached for Jonathan’s cell phone that was sticking out from one of the pockets. Once he picked it up, Jonathan’s lock screen photo was brought into view. It was him and Leah’s wedding picture. “Oh Leah..”
James swallowed hard. “This is gonna fucking break her heart.” He inhaled deeply as he dialled Leah’s number from Jon’s phone.
Leah was cuddled up in the bed that she shared with Jonathan when her phone rang from beside her. Her head tilted to get a peak at who was calling. She smiled instantly seeing her husbands name pop up, and wasted no time before answering the call. “Hi baby! How are you?”
“Leah. I’ve got some bad news.” James was fighting back tears as he spoke to her.
“James? What’s wrong where’s Jon?” Leah stood up off her bed in a panic.
“Our bus crashed Leah.” He continued. Her heart dropped instantly, and tears were welling up in her eyes. “Jonathan didn’t make it. I’m so so sorry Leah but he’s gone.”
“NOOOOOOOO!” Leah let out a blood curdling scream as she erupted into loud, heart breaking sobs. She collapsed back onto her bed and kept crying. “JAMES…”
“I’m sorry Leah.” James repeated again. “We wanted to tell you before you heard anything on the news.”
“HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?!” Leah continued to sob loudly. “HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO.. GO ON? TO LIVE WITHOUT HIM? JAMES WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO?”
“I don’t know Leah. I’m sorry.” He let on a soft cry. “I’m here for you. We’re all here for you.”
“Okay.” She whimpered sadly. “Please come home..”
“We’re going to call for help… okay?” James informed her. “Leah. Listen to me very carefully.”
“Okay..” She repeated as she fell back down on the bed.
“Don’t hurt yourself. Please don’t fucking hurt yourself.” His pleading was serious.
“I have two daughters James.” She reminded him. “I couldn’t do that to them.”
“I’m going to call for help now Leah.” James was terrified to hang up the phone. “Please call back if you need us.”
“I will.” Leah answered in a small voice before hanging up the phone. Her hands shook and she began to cry again. With a deep exhale, she finally motivated herself to stand up off the bed. The phone went dead which signified James had hung up.
“Mom?” Alana’s voice startled Leah out of the trance. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
Leah looked into her daughter’s concerned eyes. “Shut the door. We need to talk.”
“Mom you’re scaring me.” Alana did as she was instructed and then approached Leah closer.
“I got a call from Uncle James.” Leah braced herself with a trembling inhale. “The band got into a bus accident and.. your Dad passed away.”
“W..what? No.. that can’t.. what?!” Alana stammered, trying her best to make sense of what she was just told.
“I’m sorry sweetie.” Leah wrapped her arms around Alana, holding her close in a comforting embrace. Alana as predicted broke down crying pretty quickly. “I know.. I know..”
“Not my dad..” Alana kept crying out. “Why? Why him?”
“I don’t know.” Leah felt helpless listening to the continuous heart wrenching cries of her daughter. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

It took Racheal a few hours after the initial conversation with her husband to psyche herself up in order to make the appointment for her abortion.
The woman was in hell. Pure turmoil. Despite that, she knew that this was the right decision for herself and for her family.
“Thanks for picking me up Leah.” Racheal gratefully expressed to her best friend who had agreed to bring her out of town for the appointment. “I really appreciate it.”
“Of course.” Leah pulled Racheal into a tight hug. Instantly, sobs were heard from her. “I know. I know it’s tough.”
“Sorry I’m such a wreck.” Racheal sighed, putting her large sunglasses on to hide her red, tear filled eyes from the rest of the world.
“Don’t apologize. I’m here for you. I’m gonna hold your hand the entire time.” Leah reminded her. Racheal nodded and finally made her way to Leah’s car. “It’s gonna be okay.” Leah swung open the drivers side door and made herself comfortable in the seat.
“It doesn’t feel okay. It feels like my entire world is crashing down right now. James is a wreck, my kids are fucking traumatized and I’m on my way to an abortion clinic.”
“Yeah.” Leah sighed. “I’m sorry Rach.”
For the next hour or so until they arrived at the clinic, Racheal didn’t say much of anything. She was too deep in her own thoughts with no way to express it without breaking down into tears again.
Leah parked the car, sighing heavily as she saw the anti abortion protesters surrounding everyone who was walking inside. “Fucking hell.”
“Is anyone taking pictures? The whole point of going out in the middle of nowhere was so I wouldn’t be seen or recognized.” Racheal scoffed at the protestors. Most of them were middle aged males.
“Don’t think so. Cmon.” Leah urged and got out of her car. Racheal ran around the other side of it and clung to her friend as they walked towards the building.
“YOUR BABY HAS A HEARTBEAT! CHOOSE LIFE!” A man shouted.
“We’ll adopt your baby!” The wife and mother of another family present added on. “Please reconsider!”
“Leave me alone!” Racheal shouted, adjusting her sunglasses as she finally made her way inside with Leah. While the steps required were few, it felt like hours. Shouts from the protestors could still be heard outside.
“Sorry for the trouble miss.” A friendly woman from behind the large desk chirped up. “They’ve been at it all morning long.”
“Is it usually like this?” Racheal asked, and the woman nodded with an annoyed sigh.
“We’re used to it by now.” The woman forced a smile. “What can I help you with? Do you have an appointment?”
Leah rubbed Racheal’s back as she could tell tears were about to fall again. Racheal nodded. “Yeah. I’m Racheal Shaffer. I called earlier.”
“Alright perfect love I’ve sent in the message that you’re here. You can take a seat with your friend and we’ll call you back when the doctors ready for you.”
“Thanks. I appreciate it.” Racheal wiped a tear from her cheek and made her way over to the waiting room with Leah. “I’m so nervous.”
“I know.” Leah held onto Racheal’s hand. “I’ll be right beside you. The whole time.”
“Racheal?” Another staff member called. “We’ll take you back now.”
Racheal took a deep breath. “Okay.” Her hand was still holding Leah’s as she stood up and followed the staff member down a long hallway into the examination room.
“Hi Racheal. I’m Sandy. I’m just going to walk you through the steps right now, okay?” The woman explained, and Racheal nodded signalling she understood. “First, your blood pressure will be taken. After that, we’ll give you a Misoprostol pill, along with some pain medication.” Sandy showed Racheal the medications she would be taking. “Would you like me to explain the medication further?”
“No ma’am. I’ve taken those pain pills before. I had a car accident just under ten years ago.” Racheal explained, frowning at the memory.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Sandy replied sympathetically, then continued. “After the medications have been given time to work, one of our lovely OB/GYN’s will come in and explain the abortion procedure to you before completing it. Do you understand?”
“Yes ma’am I do. Thank you.” Racheal forced a smile, which wasn’t overly difficult due to the woman’s kindness.
“You’re very welcome. So. Are you two sisters? Friends?”
“We’re best friends. Met in high school after she mouthed off to some bullies for me.” Leah exchanged a smile with Racheal. “Been inseparable ever since.”
“That’s very sweet. You two remind me of my sisters!” Sandy said while handing Racheal the medications and some water to take them with. “There you are.”
As soon as Racheal looked at the pills, she tensed up again. “Fuck!”
“Take some deep breaths Racheal.”
Sandy instructed. “It’s very common to feel a mixture of emotions right now. I can assure you it’s completely safe.”
“I know that.” Racheal replied with a bit of frustration with herself, but eventually took the required medication. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay Racheal. Just lay down now and rest for a bit. We will return shortly and then begin the procedure.”
“Okay.” Racheal did as she was instructed by Sandy. The bed was shockingly comfortable compared to what she’d slept on last night; a hospital chair. The ceiling and walls were decorated with purple flowers above the light colouring of the structure.
“How’re you feeling?” Leah asked.
“A little tired.” She answered honestly. “And nervous still. Very nervous.”
“It’ll be over soon Racheal. Then, we can go back to my place and you can sleep for hours while my cats shower you with love.” Leah chuckled a bit to lighten the mood. “I know you’re more of a dog person though.”
“I love Willow and Snowball. You know that.” Racheal laughed softly for the first time today.
A few minutes past, and a doctor made her way into the room with Racheal, Leah and Sandy who had returned with the doctor. The name tag on her shirt read Dr Crawford. “Hello Racheal.” Dr Crawford greeted. “Are you feeling ready to begin your procedure?”
Racheal swallowed hard. This was it. “Yes.”
“Perfect.” Dr Crawford answered. “First, I’m going to have you change into a surgical gown. Then, I will insert small rods to dilate your cervix before inserting a suction tube to remove the pregnancy. Mild cramping afterwards is quite normal.” She explained. “Do you have any questions for me before I let you get changed and we begin?”
“No ma’am.” Racheal answered. “I think everything’s just about covered. Thank you.”
“You’re very welcome.” Dr Crawford nodded, carefully handing Racheal a medical gown. Once the staff left the room temporarily, Racheal took this time to change into the proper clothing for the procedure.
“I know, I look so beautiful don’t I?” Racheal said to Leah sarcastically.
“You always do.” Leah assured her, helping Racheal lay back down on the hospital bed.
A few minutes past and Dr Crawford arrived back in along with Sandy. Crawford had her tools in hand ready to perform the abortion. “I’m going to begin now, are you ready Racheal?”
“Yes.” Racheal answered but teared up. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Leah held her hand tighter. “I’m right here.” She whispered softly.
“You’re doing great Racheal.” Dr Crawford assured. “Your cervix is dilated now. I’m going to insert the suction in a few seconds.”
“Okay.” Racheal nodded. Her eyes were snapped shut as she felt the suction machine progress through it’s needed areas in her body.
“Almost done.” Dr Crawford assured. After a few seconds of her speaking, the tube was removed. “There we go. You did amazing Racheal. We’re going to monitor you for a bit and then you can head home after we go over some aftercare instructions.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
—-
The car ride back to Leah’s place again, felt like eternity for Racheal. She was tired, sore and nauseated. “God I’m so glad that’s over.”
“I bet.” Leah replied. “Jonathan might go see James later.”
“If he doesn’t mind waiting until after I’ve gotten some sleep I’d like to join him.” Racheal proposed.
“I’m sure he wouldn’t.” Leah assured.
About an hour after that conversation, Leah made it back to her home. Racheal had almost fallen asleep in the car multiple times at this point and was looking forward to laying down in a soft, comfortable bed.
Jonathan opened the door upon seeing them approach the house. “Hi Racheal.” His voice was full of sympathy as he gave her a gentle hug.
“Racheal’s a little tired, so I offered her the guest bed to catch some rest in.” Leah explained to Jonathan before giving him a quick peck on the lips.
“I hope that’s okay.” Racheal took off her sunglasses and rested them in her purse.
“Of course Racheal. You’re always welcome here.” Jonathan smiled.
Racheal smiled back gracefully. “Thank you.” She gently responded before making her way up the stairs to the spare bedroom. Once she laid down, it didn’t take her long to drift off into a deep sleep.
“It’s a girl!” The doctor exclaimed as she held up Racheal and James’s new born baby. “Congratulations.” She added while carefully handing over the infant to Racheal.
“She’s perfect.” James wiped a tear from his eye before kissing Racheal on the top of her head. “You did amazing honey.”
“She is. She’s so beautiful.” Racheal cradled the baby girl, unable to take her eyes off of her.
“And she’s got the best mama in the world.”
“Racheal.” Leah spoke softly as she noticed her best friend beginning to awake from her nap. “I made dinner. You hungry?”
“DINNER? What time is it?” Racheal tilted her head as she looked at the clock. I slept for four hours?!”
“You needed your rest. Your body has been through a lot over the past couple days.”
“Yeah I guess you’re right.” Racheal shook her head but agreed with Leah. “I had a dream about the day I gave birth to Raven. God, we were so happy.”
Leah sighed, walking into the room and sitting beside Racheal on the bed as she began to cry. “It’s okay Racheal. Cmere.”
“I just want us to be happy again!” Racheal cried out as Leah held her in a comforting hug. “Our marriage.. our family. I thought we were through all the hard things. I love him Leah. I love him so much and I almost lost him FOREVER!”
“Racheal.” Leah whispered. “Take some deep breaths okay? You’ve had a long day and you’re tired and hormonal. You’re in situations you never thought possible.” Her hand gently tucked a strand of hair behind Racheal’s ear. “You’re going to get through this.”
“I just wanna see him. I wanna see him and I wanna hug him. I wanna see my kids and my parents.” Racheal spoke extremely quickly. “I need to see him.”
“Let’s go have some dinner, okay? Then Jonathan will take you to see him, okay?”
“Okay.” Racheal calmed down slightly a bit and made her way downstairs with Leah. Jonathan, Alana and Delaney were sat at the table already eating spaghetti. “Hi girls!”
“Hi Aunt Racheal.” Alana twirled her spaghetti around the fork before gobbling it up quickly.
Delaney waved due to the fact that her mouth was full.
“You girls are growing up so FAST!” Racheal sat down across from where Alana and Delaney were. She loved spending time with Leah and Jon’s kids.
“Nahhhh!” Delaney finally spoke up.
“Thanks for dinner.” Racheal indicated with appreciation. “I’m starvin.”
“Me too.” Jonathan smiled in agreement.
“Why are you eating so fast Aunt Racheal?” Alana tilted her head and then stared at her own plate. “I’ve still got ALLLLL this spaghetti left!”
“Oh. No reason.” Racheal hadn’t realized how much she was rushing herself to finish dinner. It made sense though, with the amount of anxiety that was running through her system.
“Listen. Racheal and I are going to head out somewhere for awhile after dinner. You two behave for mommy, okay?” Jonathan told his daughters and they nodded.
“They’re always little angels don’t worry.” Leah chuckled quietly.
—
“How are you holding up, Racheal?” Jonathan questioned. He knew that this was unbelievably tough on her.
Racheal sighed. “I just wanna see my husband.”
“I get that.” Jonathan answered. “No small talk. Understood.” Racheal worried he was mad, but a quick reassurance smile soothed her anxieties. “All I wanna tell you is truly how strong you are. And you’re a good wife to him Racheal. Don’t ever feel like you aren’t.”
“Thanks Jonathan.” She replied seriously. “That means a lot.”
“You don’t have to thank me.” Jonathan said, turning into the hospital parking lot.
Racheal stepped out of the car, Jonathan following close behind. The cramping had subsided a bit. Eating dinner definitely helped with that.
“Hi baby!” James seemed happier than ever to see Racheal standing in the doorway of his room. Jonathan kept himself busy in the waiting room with one of the books he’d taken off of Leah’s shelf. (In typical fashion, it was covered in white cat fur.)
“You’re looking a lot better.” Racheal indicated with a pleased smile.
“You know you can come closer. I don’t bite.” He joked, signalling her over with his hand.
“Oh. Yeah. I know.” Racheal shook her head slightly before making her way over to his bed and laying next to him. Out of habit, James wrapped his arm around her comfortably. Racheal leaned her head on his chest. “I had the abortion today.”
“I know. You told me you were making the appointment.” James reminded her. “Do you wanna talk about it?”
“Not really.” She answered honestly. “I just wanna be here with you. I’ve missed you all day and I don’t wanna make the visit all about sad shit.”
“I love you Racheal. And once I get outta here, I promise this is never gonna happen again. I fucking promise.”

“You’re in the hospital baby.” James, her husband, softly answered. “You and Leah were in a car accident.” His head shook slowly in an attempt to hold back tears.
“Who?” Racheal asked, clearly confused. “I don’t know her.”
James’s heart sank. “She’s your best friend.”
“While we’re on the subject.. who are you?”
“W..what?” If possible, his heart sank even further. It felt impossible to process the fact that his wife, had NO idea who he was. “You really don’t know who I am?” With quivering lips, the battle began to hold back tears.
“No.” Racheal stared downwards, wanting anything but to make eye contact. Her body was still in defence mode. In her eyes, he was a complete stranger.
“I’m your husband baby.” He carefully tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear. “You’re everything to me.”
“Don’t touch me.”
“Okay.” He pulled his hands away from her. It hurt his feelings, but he was selfless enough to know it wasn’t about him. “I know you’re scared. And I’m sorry this happened to you.”
“Thank you.” She turned over, facing away from him. Within seconds, he was out of the room crying.
One of the nurses, Julie, took his place in the seat next to Racheal’s bed.
💔😔💔
It didn’t take James much time to find the room where Leah was. She was in rough shape too, clearly not as bad as her best friend though. “Hey Jon?”
Jonathan looked up from Leah’s hospital bed that he was laying in. “Hey man.. how’s Racheal?”
“And when can I go see her?” Leah added. However, once she saw the look on Jame’s face a wave of panic washed right over her. “Is she okay?! What is it?”
“Jon can I please talk to you outside for a minute?” James pleaded through tears.
Leah looked at Jon, squeezing onto his hand. She didn’t want him to leave her side even for a few seconds. “Please..”
Jon rubbed Leah’s back through her gown. “Can’t you just say it here?” James shook his head. “I’ll be right back baby.” He kissed the top of her head before heading towards the hallway where Jame’s now was.
“Racheal can’t remember.. anything.” James dreadfully informed. “Not who Leah is, not who I am. Absolutely NOTHING!”
“Jesus man..” Jonathan shook his head with disbelief. “I’m so fucking sorry.”
“You should go back to your wife.” James glanced towards the woman who was still panicking in her bed, even more so that a doctor was attempting a conversation. “Looks like she needs you.”
“Shit.” Jonathan sighed. “Yeah. You gonna be.. alright?”
“No. But go back to her. She needs you there.” James repeated with increased importance. Jonathan nodded, placing a hand on his friends’ shoulder before walking back into the hospital room. “I need a fucking cigarette.” He grumbled, making his way outside. “God this fucking day!” He cursed, instantly pulling a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. He pressed it between his lips, shakily lighting it.
“What happened?” A young woman who James was unaware was even there, let alone in earshot asked. “Can I have one of those?”
“Hell no.” James replied before taking a long drag off his smoke. “It’s a nasty habit. Don’t start.”
“Damnit!” She pouted, turning on her heels and walking the other direction.
He took another drag off his cigarette, his eyes zoning in on the wedding ring tightly wrapped around his finger.
Racheal slid the ring onto James’s finger, hardly able to keep herself still due to all the excitement.
“You may now kiss the bride!”
He shook himself out of the flashback. Tears welled up in his eyes again. “Man.. that was a good day.”
A few minutes passed, and he decided to put out his cigarette. By now he’d figured Racheal’s father, step mother and two brothers were on their way.
The walk back to Racheal’s room felt like hours. “Hey Racheal.” He spoke softly while walking closer to her bed.
“You’re back.” She observed.
“How’re you feeling?”
“Sore. But I’m okay. I guess.” She swallowed hard, nervous shakes filling her whole body.
“I know you’re scared. It’s okay..” He whispered, his fingers resting on the railings of her bed. He wanted to provide what ever comfort he could without breaking her wishes. “You can ask me anything you want.”
“Do we have kids?”
“Not yet.” He smiled a bit at this. They’d been trying before the accident. “We have a dog though.” He told her, digging a photo of the three of them out of his wallet to show her. “See? That’s us.”
“Aww.”
“He loves you. Probably will jump all over you as soon as you get home.”
“That’s funny.” She says genuinely. “You got any more pictures?”
“Here’s our wedding picture. You looked so beautiful.” James proudly stated as he handed the picture over to his wife. “We were so happy.” His voice was clearly breaking.
“At least I know you’re not an axe murderer.” Racheal joked, almost as if her true personality was shining through all the confusion.
“Heh. Yeah.” He laughed softly. After that, it was pure silence.

“So.. mall today?” Leah was practically jumping with excitement. Jonathan found it absolutely endearing. “There’s a sale on this cute black dress. I was thinking of buying it.”
He looked up into her glowing expression with love. “Anything you want baby.” Jonathan smiled as he blessed her with his agreement, despite knowing how many stores they were gonna end up dropping tons of cash on.
He didn’t mind though. For the first time in his life, Jonathan truly felt understood and comfortable. Leah never judged him, he trusted and loved spending time with her. She meant the absolute world to him and the most beautiful thing in life was making her happy.
“Yay!” Leah gave him a quick kiss before suddenly turning to rush him. “We’d better get going now. It’s gonna be BUSY!”
“Yes ma’am.” Jonathan chuckled a bit, twirling his hair while the couple made their way to the front door. “We should get dinner afterwards too. All that shopping is gonna make my girl hungry and we can’t have that can we?”
“You’re funny.” She said sarcastically but her eyes were rolling playfully to indicate there was no real annoyance behind her reaction.
“I’d certainly like to think so.” He winked at her before comfortably resting his arm around her shoulders while they walked outside towards his car.
“Whatever!” She giggled, kissing his cheek softly. “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, you know that?”
“Aww.” Jonathan grinned, softly kissing her lips a few times. “I’m so lucky to have you. You’re the love of my life.” His arm draped down to hold her hand, not taking his eyes off her now blushing face, even when she was sat down in the passenger seat.
….
As predicted, the mall was absolutely PACKED. Crowds upon crowds were piling in and out of the various stores surrounding the perimeter. Leah had eyes on her goal instantly. “I see it!” She exclaimed, practically dragging Jonathan by the hand that she’d been holding. Upon realizing, she halted some pressure. “Sorry baby!”
“It’s fine.” Jonathan chuckled, sharing a humours glance with the witnesses of this interaction.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” Leah turned their attention to the glamours dress she’d had her eyes on. “I’m gonna go try it on.”
“Alright babe.” He watched her go off to the change rooms; dress in hand. A few minutes passed and she stepped outside the stall. “WOW!”
“You like it?” Leah clearly knew the answer, but a little validation was always appreciated.
He nodded. “You look beautiful. Cmon. I’ll buy it for you.”
“Aww! Thanks baby!” Leah kissed his cheek again, grinning. “You’re so good to me.”
“Well you deserve it.” Jonathan told her genuinely.
She was smiling from ear to ear while striding her way back to the dressing rooms. When she returned a few minutes later; it was like the expression of gratefulness never left her face. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.” He placed a small kiss on her lips before they went up to pay for the dress. After, they made a few more small purchases at various other stores before Jonathan very suddenly stopped in his tracks.
“Jonathan?” Leah tilted her head in confusion, thinking maybe he’d accidentally left his wallet behind at a store, or forgot something else that was important. “Babe you okay?” He didn’t answer her, just staring forward, clearly nervous. “Babe!” She repeated again, this time it seemed to get his attention.
“S..sorry. I’m just not feeling well can we go home now?!” He sputtered out in a panic, grabbing onto her hand for a sense of comfort. “Please?!”
“Yeah you look a little pale..” She observed, clearly concerned for him. He’s never done this before. “Let’s go get a drink.”
“NO!” He answered significantly louder then intended, taking the attention of fellow customers. “Let’s just go, okay?!”
“Will you at least tell me what you’re so freaked out about?” Leah calmly asked as they walked back towards the car. He darted inside instantly. “Jonathan!” She sighed heavily as she took the drivers seat.
He started to sob uncontrollably, which only made her freak out more. “Please..”
“Oh my gosh babe!” Out of instinct, she wrapped her arms around him securely. “It’s okay. I’m here.”
“Can we just.. go home.. please..?” He asked through tears, though secretly he wanted her to keep hugging him. “I need to lay down. I feel so sick.”
“Yeah.” Leah sighed again, pulling out of the parking spot and beginning to drive away.
After a few minutes of silence, Jonathan finally spoke. “I saw someone I didn’t wanna see.”
“Who?” She asked softly. “You can tell me.”
Jonathan wiped a few tears from his cheeks. “That one baby sitter I had.”
His words hit her like a ton of bricks. She knew exactly who was being referred to. “Shit baby. I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry.”
“I don’t think she saw me.” Jonathan expressed hopefully.
Leah shook her head slowly. “That sick bitch!”
“I just wanna forget about it, okay? Can we just go home.. maybe order a pizza?”
She nodded. “But if you change your mind and wanna talk about it, I’m here you know that.”
“I know baby. And I appreciate it.” His tears were dried up a bit now. “You were always so kind and understanding about it. That means more to me then you’ll ever know.”
“I’d give you a hug and kiss but I’m driving.” She was relieved when he let on a smile. Leah often tried to make people laugh when they had some sort of emotional distress. Her and Brian Welch had that in common. Most likely why they became friends so easily.
….
Jonathan had felt a little better as the day progressed into evening. Leah’s general presence was very soothing to him.
He was sat comfortably on the couch next to her, softly tracing his fingers up and down her back. “I honestly don’t know what I’d do without you.” Jonathan whispered seriously.
“I’m not going anywhere.” She assured him. “I love you.” Leah smiled a bit before kissing him softly.
“You taste like pizza.” He chuckled, running a hand through her long blonde hair.
“I ate like five slices. So did YOU!” She reminded him before kissing his lips again.
“Yeah and it was worth it.” He leaned his head on her shoulder. “You’re comfy.”
“Tired?” Leah questioned, but he shook his head no.
“Just relaxed.” He answered, smiling while watching Leah’s two cats, Willow and Snowball playing together in the corner of the room. “Aww!”
“They’re so precious, aren’t they?” Leah loved her cats. The two creatures were indeed her babies. “It’s funny watching them.”
“Yeah. They are.” Despite Jonathan promising he wasn’t tired, his eyes were fighting to stay open. He let out a yawn, finally surrendering to his fatigue. “Mm I’m sleepy.”
Leah couldn’t help but chuckle at him. It was such an adorable sight when he was sleepy. “Alright let’s go to bed.” She too was starting to get sleepy. Besides, even if she didn’t fall asleep right away, Jonathan definitely wanted her company. It had been a rough day for him after all.
….
Leah made herself comfortable underneath the covers while leaning against Jonathan as he spooned her. “Cozy.”
“You say that every night.” He played with her hair a bit, smiling while his fingers made their way through her blonde strands. “But I’m glad you’re nice and cozy.” He paused for a second to kiss the top of her head. “Good night my love.”
“Night baby.” They two shared a kiss before falling asleep at their respective times. Leah was still worried about Jonathan, but in her mind all signs pointed to him doing decently okay. He was definitely holding her closer, tighter even.
A few hours went by. At this point, it had to be about two am. Jonathan had woken up suddenly, and was sobbing into his pillow trying not to wake Leah.
However, his efforts were in vain. “Jonathan? What’s going on?” Leah was still waking up when she started talking, so her voice was slightly hazy.
As much as he felt it would be easier to play it off and tell her to go back to sleep, he knew he couldn’t. “I..had one of those nightmares again. I haven’t had them for awhile.” He trembled, breathing heavy and heart pounding. “I’m sorry I woke you up.”
“No baby. Don’t be sorry.” Leah whispered, turning on the beside lamp so they could see eachother. Perhaps it would comfort him. She ran her hands up and down his back in a soothing manner. “You’re safe.”
“You’re an angel, have I ever told you that?” He leaned into her soothing touch, encouraging her to continue it, which she did with no hesitation.
“No you haven’t.”
“Well you are.” He said seriously. “Everything’s easier with you here.”
“I’m glad baby.” She laid back down beside him, keeping her fingers moving slowly on his back. “Deep breaths baby. You’re okay. You’re safe. Just go to sleeeeep.” As she dragged out the final word in her sentence, Leah turned the beside lamp off again. Her arms wrapped securely around him so he was being comfortably spooned. “I’ve got you baby.”
Jonathan nodded, not saying much after that. Leah continued to soothe him until eventually they’d both fallen asleep again.
