They had endless literally ENDLESS options and they chose to film there?
30 million $ per episode and they couldn’t just film it in a different place or build a green screen?
I wish a link had been provided because I feel there might be some nuance to this.
First of all, I don’t see anything inherently disrespectful about those scenes. In face, I found the way they portrayed Russian prisons/gulags to be particularly poignant given that these are popping up in russian occupied Ukrainian territory right now and have been in crimea for years. The fact that it’s a Nazi prison does draw apt historical connections. I think if they had gussied the place up like a five star hotel, it would have been a different story. But if there’s something here I’m missing I would love to understand more.
Secondly, I have to wonder what benefits if any fell on the location. I mean is it privately owned land? Is it a museum? Some of this season was filmed during covid, right? Did the money they paid to use this location go to funding its continued historical preservation during a time when tourism was impossible? Perhaps by filming here, they allowed income to come to whatever institution maintains the sight. If it’s just closed off and abandoned, then that’s a different story from it being a museum that was able to put the funds to good use.
Thirdly, is this abnormal? What do we typically do with these sites? What protocols were followed? There are a lot of movies and shows that have prison scenes that shoot in prisons. There are a lot of movies that have scenes in russian prisons (Black Widow comes to mind) where are they filming those? Is this calling Stranger Things out for a common industry practice? Yes, just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t make it right, but if this is normal why not have a conversation about the industry at large not this one show?
If anyone has answers to these questions I genuinely want to know.
I may have the answer to two of the questions lmao. The prison is open to the public and was also remade into an art venue. There are concerts held there and many artists. The site also doesn’t really go into what the prison was used for other than the fact it was, y'know. A prison. So I’d imagine these things held a place into the decision to film here.
So it seems normal to film there, right? I mean how is this more disrespectful than a concert or art show?
it is disrespectful. just as the concerts or whatever. the reason why ppl are focusing on recording stranger things there is bc this show is fucking popular. so ppl notice. bc st is something that ppl talk about. are u dumb or sth 😭 is it really so hard to think
