When searching Google you will find 732,000,000 results for the word bathroom. Under the phrase ‘bathroom remodeling’ you will find 21,800,000 options to choose from when Googling. As you can see the available information and options out there are not endless but might as well be.
So the question is, if you have decided to make your bathroom one of the over 8 million bathrooms that will be remodeled this year, where do you begin?
I have read numerous articles on the subject of bathroom remodeling by designers, contractors, journalist and ‘industry experts’ on the subject of bathroom remodeling. Each had their own points but most were vanilla telling you the same thing over and over. One wants you to paint it yourself to save money. The other wants you to clean the grout instead of renovating. There were a few designers that wanted you to buy new towels and washcloths instead of renovating. I do believe all of these items are viable for changing the look of your bathroom but new towels are not going solve dilapidated cabinets and clean grout is not going to update your tile. Re-wrapping the same present does not change the product.
Everyone is always trying to sell you something, including me. You have decided to remodel your bathroom, what do you do.

Bathroom remodeling – Idea
Once you decide on bathroom remodeling the first thing you need to do is look through magazines and the internet for photos of ideas you may wish to mimic or build off of. Clip or cut and paste any and every picture you see that you like. DO NOT look at the photo and say ‘oh that is too expensive’ or ‘oh…I wish we could do something like that but it cost too much’. There are thousands and thousands of bathroom remodeling products out there. The one you are looking at in the magazine may be Rohl brand which is a high end line that is very expensive but Kohler or Moen may make a very similar product for a fraction of the cost.
Above you will notice four somewhat similar faucets. They vary in price and manufacturer but are all quality products. Which one is the expensive? The second one from the left cost $645.00. The other three are all under $200.00. Each and everyone is an 8″ spread faucet and they are all made of a metal that will last longer than me and you. Is there a difference in the product that would warrant the cost? It is a debatable subject. The answer depends on who you ask. I have bought both for my homes and I can tell you without a doubt the water came out the exact same way whether I paid $600 or $200. The more expensive lines may have a few new designs that are unique but to the eye and touch there is not much difference.
Bathroom remodeling should first be about taste and desire and then cost.
As you can see from above do not limit your bathroom remodeling ideas by a pre-determined impression of cost. Pick out EVERYTHING you want in your new bathroom and then you can begin to narrow your choices by costing the items and finding alternatives.

Remember during the ‘idea’ phase DO NOT limit yourself in anyway. Make a list of all that you wish to be incorporated into your new bathroom. Do not limit yourself to cost, size of room or existing layout. Do not even consider measuring the room at this point. Let your imagination and desires wonder to the point of satisfaction.
When reading the millions of articles and advise columns do not take it all to heart. I have read a thousand that tell you to ‘save money do not move your fixtures’. It is true that moving a fixture cost money but instead of making the decision not to ask about the moving of the toilet, sink or tub why not ask? Its free to ask. The cost of moving the sink may be $100 or may be a $1000 it just depends on the situation and existing plumbing. Knowing what cost is the only way to make an informed decision. If it were a hundred dollars and it meant you were able to get the soaking tub you always dreamed of or the bench in the shower you have been wanting would you not pay the money? Of course you would. If it were $2,000 probably not but at least you would know.
In parting let me say this. A bathroom remodel is an exciting home improvement project and one that as illustrated above, millions take part in every year. However, it is not one that you will do with any regularity which means take your time and be sure that during the idea phase you do not limit yourself.
