Being Hordika brought a connection to a more primal nature, one based on instinct and raw emotion. We couldn't use our Kanohi, because we lacked the focus to do so. We were prone to bouts of anger and clouded logic. As Hordika, we were unable to fulfill our destiny. While there were some good things about being Hordika, they were not worth what we had sacrificed upon our transformation.

I had the joy of attending Bionicle Tumblr Prom with Toa Kopaka Nuva. This is what transpired.

Sitting next to him at their darkness-shrouded table was Kopaka, slowly sipping an alcohol-free fruity drink, dressed to the nines in a black tuxedo with a cummerbund and tie the exact color of his eyes. For a moment, Nuju couldn’t help but feel proud of the Toa Nuva of Ice, who had grown to be the epitome of cool that so many Ko-Matoran strived for. Then he realized that thoughts like those were exactly why he was feeling so strange. He turned to Kopaka and asked, “Could you at least try to have fun?”
“This is the equivalent of going to prom with your mother,” Kopaka answered curtly, setting his glass on the table with a soft thud, “with all due respect, Toa Nuju,” he added, remembering who he was speaking to.
Nuju averted his eyes, choosing to observe the couples and groups on the dance floor. Scattered among them were others of his kind: Nokama danced between Vakama and Matau, Whenua had parked himself near the refreshments and had a glass in each hand, Tahu’s tie had somehow ended up around his head, and Lewa’s dancing had earned him a rowdy crowd of followers. The DJ had picked some decent songs, at least; he’d heard from his friend Jayy that her prom’s DJ played nothing but shitty trap music. He tapped his foot along to the music, wondering what to do with the layer of icy awkwardness that had formed between himself and Kopaka.
However, it was Kopaka who had broken through the layer. “I guess we could try dancing,” he suggested. Nuju glanced at him in surprise.
“Are you serious?” he questioned.
Kopaka stood up and extended his hand. “It’s illogical if we don’t. We are attending prom for the purpose of dancing, so what does it serve to sit here and drink until we fall asleep?”
Nuju cocked his eyebrow. “Somebody must have spiked the punch. You are clearly inebriated.” He accepted Kopaka’s offer anyway, and let the Toa Nuva of Ice lead him to the crowded dance floor.
“My drink did taste a little odd,” Kopaka replied. He closed his eyes, standing tranquilly in the midst of the undulating bodies. Nuju stood close by, only because there was no room to stand anywhere else. Despite how calm the Toa Nuva of Ice seemed, Nuju could hear the nervous hitch in his breath.
Nuju tapped Kopaka’s shoulder. “Are you all right?” he asked.
Kopaka shook his head. “I can’t dance,” he admitted.
“Neither can I,” said Nuju, letting out a rare smile. “That makes two of us.”
In the midst of couples grinding, Nuju and Kopaka faced each other at arm’s length, swaying comfortably to the music. More than once, Nuju wished Kopaka were smaller, so he could dance with his successor perched comfortably on his feet like a father figure was supposed to do. But Kopaka was not, and there was no easy way to hold his dear brother close without bringing up the divide between them. And when Pohatu stole Kopaka away for a dance, Nuju looked on with fondness. Even when being swung around by the Toa Nuva of stone, Kopaka really was the epitome of cool, a thorough representation of the element he wielded. His heart swelled with pride, then deflated into amusement as Kopaka stumbled back towards him, muttering something about “ridiculous stone Toa who didn’t know the meaning of ‘slow dance’.”
The night wound down, and as the dance floor cleared out and the limousines filed away from the dance hall one by one, Nuju escorted Kopaka to the town car they had rented for the night.
The ride was silent, thanks to the two stoic entities rendered voiceless by tiredness. Finally, the town car stopped in front of Kopaka’s hut, and he moved to open the door.
“I’m sorry this wasn’t what you expected,” Nuju apologized.
Kopaka shook his head. “All things considered, I had fun,” he said quietly, “thank you.” He extended his fist in the traditional gesture of brotherhood of their kind.
After a long moment, Nuju smiled and clanked his fist against Kopaka’s.
