I love Gideon the Ninth because you open with Harrow and Gideon going into Canaan House terrified of having their Big Con pretending to be a normal necromancer and cavalier primary, right? Classic stuff, high tension, lovely. But by the end of the book you realize like half the group is doing this.

Cam and Palamedes have gone about this all the wrong way, they're probably only there to meet Dulcie frankly. Cam sticks out like a sore thumb because she's a damn good fighter but has never learned a fencing rule in her life and also they might be up for some light treason while they're flaunting the natural order of their binary gender roles. Then of course the Tridentarii and their pet Babs are there with an even BIGGER secret with HIGHER stakes and honestly they're doing a shit job at covering it up. But no one catches on bc they're too busy gawking Abigail and Magnus who aren't young anymore and can't be bothered to hide their taboo, rules breaking heresy.

Then there's Dulcinea—who, as you may recall,

it really is so poignant how careful gideon is with harrow's body at the end of htn. she's furious and heartbroken and confused and terrified and under attack by giant evil bees and doesn't even have her own body to go back to at that point and she keeps mentally apologizing every time the body gets injured by mistake and she closes her eyes when she needs to change clothes. this is gideon about as upset at harrow as she's ever been and it has no affect on her desire to be respectful with her body, she'll cuss out and insult harrow for pages on end in her internal monologue and never ever think about looking at or touching her in a way she doesn't want. girl...

I've just been absolutely rambling in my notes app about Monstrous Regiment. Like.

It's such a silly premise at face value, a regiment where every single person is actually a woman pulling a Mulan (or, rather more fittingly, a Sweet Polly Oliver), but then you read it and it's about blind faith, the pitfalls of war and organised religion, how we use those things to hide hatred and fear. It's about gender roles, and how flawed the idea that “If women were in charge, there'd be no wars” is. It's about people, and human nature, as almost every Discworld book is, when you get down to it.

It's got a coffee-addict vampire. What's not to like?
