I super duper love being a patient's favorite nurse. It gives me the warm fuzzies. Yes I can brag on this cause as an ex-noc shifter it never happens!

A study conducted using color coded using the Broslow Colors found ZERO critical med errors and decreased preparation and administration time of critical drugs.
This is way cool
Donât lie, you fucking sang it.
if anyone who sees this DOESNâT sing it, they are a disgrace and will never bring their family honor.
dishonor on you. dishonor on your cow.

My bebe has his first cold and I'm over here wishing I had some NP suction, ya feel me?
What made you go through nursing school without giving up? I want to be in a field like yours. Having a pt ratio of 2 :1 seems ideal really! Any advice? cons and pros of nursing? :)
I guess just focusing on the fact that it was one year of my life (I was in an accelerated program) and when it was done I would never have to go to school again! I just kept picturing my dream career and what it would mean for my family (no more living off credit cards and Ramen), that gave me the motivation I needed. I've always been very school-oriented though.2:1 Patient ratios are typically only found in ICUs, we staff that way in our stepdown unit because the patient population is still very nursing intensive and would likely be found in an ICU at other hospitals. My advice to you would be to focus on why you picked nursing in the first place... You will have some of the worst days imaginable, but they will undoubtedly be followed with some magical moments that reinspire your faith in the profession. Don't haze the baby nursing students once you are on your own. Invest in a good stethoscope. Always have an AmbuBag nearby. Follow EBP. Trust your nursey gut. Find a specialty that makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning. Don't be afraid of your own professional development; you don't need 10 years of experience to be a resource for other nurses.Good luck!!!!
CLEAR (regular) BEFORE CLOUDY (NPH [intermediate]), but
why?
So your 2nd check nurse buddy can actually see the line of how much R and how much NPH youâve got in the syringe. If you draw NPH first they just swirl together (allegedly).
I was taught that it's to prevent contaminating the regular insulin vial with anything but.... Regular insulin.
Confession
I watch everything with subtitles. Netflix, television, DVDâsâŠIâve always done it and it drives people crazy. But if I donât use subtitles Iâll miss half of whatever is going on, itâs so strange.
OMG.
I'm not alone.
So apparently
I bore a resemblance to the woman who gave my patient a TBI. Great.

What are your patient ratios? Is it just cardiac?
In our step down area they're 2 to 1, in general care they're 3-4 to 1. Every once in a while we'll have a patient that we care for 1 to 1.I would say we're probably 75% Cardiac (most of the time), we take some off-service patients to keep our census up.
Is your unit a stepdown unit?
We have both a general care and a step-down area on my floor, the same nurses staff both areas.... just with different patient ratios.Being that we are a highly specialized unit, we see a lot of patients that elsewhere would belong in a PICU, which makes us appreciate our Peds Cards ICU and their abilities even more :)
Hi! I just spend at least 30 mins going through your blog and didn't see anyone that had asked this yet so I would love to know if you have advice/ opinions. I've always wanted to be a doctor as long as I can remember but I'm just terrified of the courses (organic chem, physics, etc.) bc I've just heard horror stories of how bad it is so now I've decided to do nursing. My plan is to work in the ER. What would the major differences in ER nurse/ doctor be? Should I do medicine instead of settling?
The pre-reqs scared me off at first too. But, eventually I decided that I would always wonder if I never tried it. And here I am. But thatâs not a choice everyone makes and thatâs ok. Sometimes people give it a shot and it doesnât work for them and thatâs ok too.
Nursing classes arenât a walk in the park either, so youâre not off the hook. Nursing school is HARD. You will work HARD. Just prepare yourself.
But nursing vs medicine? You should do whatâs right for you and I canât answer that. They are both wonderful and challenging fields.
Nurses and doctors do different things in the ED. The nurses are in charge of doing a lot of the most direct patient care- placing lines, taking vitals, giving meds, sometimes even doing procedures like splinting, and that just scratches the surface. The doctors do more orchestrating patient care- diagnose disease, order things, do some procedures like suturing, deciding who gets admitted, and much more.
Nursing is not âsettling.â Câmon. If youâre doing nursing school because you think itâs easier, youâre becoming a nurse for all the wrong reasons. Youâre going to regret it. Of my graduating class, only 50% made it through without failing a course. Nursing school is not easy.
Well I'm a nurse and took Orgo and Physics....in addition to Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Calculus, Genetics, and more.
Nurses aren't washed up Pre-Meds. Once I decided that my heart was for Nursing, I worked harder for that degree than I ever did for my Undergrad in Pre-Med. I would take a look at your career goals and figure out exactly which type of HCP you want to be....and then do it!
Happy birthday, Harry.
Not trying to be rude, genuinely curious, but why would you want to go into management? It sounds like a nightmare to me.
I'm still trying to figure that out myself! I want to (eventually) advance my education and go back to school, but I'm not yet sure for what. Teaching is not for me, I don't know that I would love the role of NP.... So management sprang to mind. I love being a part of actual, tangible change on my floor and I just became a part of our governance. I am in no way ready to make a commitment to it, but I'm not ruling it out yet! There's plenty I want to accomplish still as a bedside nurse, that's still where my heart is right now.
You know you work in peds when...
âŠyou pass around the non accidental trauma baby whose parents are banned from the hospital. Everybody took turn holding and charting with him so he wouldnât have to be in his room alone. Even our manager couldnât resist.Â
