Guy Wiggins, St. Patrick’s in Winter, ca. 1940. Oil on board.
Guy Wiggins was an extremely popular painter of the first half of the 20th century. When he was 20, he became the youngest artist to have a work included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When he started painting scenes of snowy New York, his popularity surged. He claimed to have been trying to paint a summer landscape, not able to progress, when he looked out the window of his studio on a winter day and decided to paint the row of buildings across the street blurred by the snow storm.

Todd Webb took this as a single, panoramic photo, but also broke it up into the four parts you see above. It shows Sixth Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets in 1948.

Not to be dramatic but if it weren’t for the phantom of the opera I would be an entirely different person.
