Soon, they were actually not that far from the karaoke bar and Joonyoung was having the time of his life. It’s decided, the kid would be his friend and he’d shove free stuff at him. “By the way what do you like to eat, I could get us something pronto, connections and all that you know.”

this guy is absolutely, positively out of his mind insane. that was the only thing running through the teenager’s head as the stranger laughed at continued to drag him along, despite his protests. “i’m too young to die,” he mumbled. his arms had grown weak at the effort of fighting back. as much as he hated to admit it, jeongguk was no match for the elder man and his strength. shoulders slumping as defeat slowly washed over him like a dull, numb wave.

when the man ( his name escaped jeongguk at the moment, being that he couldn’t care less when he first introduced himself ) picked him up and literally carried him bridal style, the boy did not even protest, already succumbing to whatever torture that was before him. whatever was left of his pride was little to none, although he did muster up enough to refuse the singing offer ( for the nth time ). “i told you, i don’t sing,” he replied, although there was no trace of malice in his voice, instead exhaustion was present. jeongguk didn’t like to repeat himself but for the sake of his current state, the teenager decided to make an exception.

“oh and i’m not hungry,” he answered just a quiet grumble was emitted from his stomach. eyes widened as he clutched his abdomen, hoping desperately that ( was it joonyoung? ) didn’t hear. truth be told, the boy hadn’t gotten a chance to reach the breakfast part of his monday routine before being whisked off by the stranger. the growing teenager needed food and currently he was very deprived. burritos sounded really good at the moment, just thinking about the delicious wraps made his mouth water. but of course, he wasn’t going to let joonyoung know.

“it’s faster than that…” he mumbles to himself mostly, tone dripping in petulance, before he gives a full body flinch as a toddler on one of the smaller horses begins crying. “why is she crying? does it hurt? oh god - we’re next.” he covers his face, slumping a little to make all 186 cm of himself less conspicuous. as if that will stop the inevitable.

the carousel, a carnival classic, was not the type of attraction most thrill seekers rode. only groups of children, no more than the age of seven, stampeded through the lines to ride the uncomfortable horses for about two minutes, if that. yet, here jeongguk was, an eighteen year old who was a little too excited to board the creaky wooden contraption.

he smiled in amusement as dark brown eyes darted between the tense tall boy before him and the kids screaming on the carousel in front of him. “oh, i don’t think i’m funny,” he began, ready to make the most out of mingyu’s unfortunate situation. “i know i’m funny.” a counterclaim that had little evidence to support it, but jeongguk didn’t mind. seeing the clear predicament between the two, his confidence was sky high.

“me? wrong?” the uncharacteristically mischievous boy feigned offense, hands clutching his chest over dramatically. desperate to milk off his friend’s fears, jeongguk flashed him a teasing smile. “it’s not that bad i promise. i mean, how bad can riding a fake pony be?”

“also, when have i ever steered you wrong, robo boy?” the nickname rolled off his tongue, laced in pure exuberance. he bit his flushed lips, trying hard to suppress the laughter that had been building up in his chest. holding a hand out to the elder, the boy motioned for him to take it in his. “because you look like you need it, here’s a limited time offer: jeon jeongguk’s hand for only $9.99 a minute!” he mocked wholeheartedly before nudging his friend forward and onto the ride.

it was almost like a little kid, the way she acted, bouncing back and forth on her heels as she waited in line. she had a hard time hiding her excitement, even for other things, and during festivals, her grin always made an appearance. wheein glanced over to the person next to her, smiling brightly with funnel cake in her hand.

“i have twenty bucks and i am ready to get lit.”

while others were enjoying themselves and making memories, the only things jeongguk was taking away from the festival were headaches and a few extra pounds ( excessive amounts of cotton candy and popcorn can do some serious damage ) the introvert was a fish out of water, quite literally. a suffocating pressure was pressed firmly against his chest, threatening to seize his lungs. being around such a large amount of people was not doing any wonders for his health.

footsteps briskly clapped on the cement, going in all directions but towards the loud hoards of festival goers. using the crowds as some sort of a compass,jeongguk ended up in an area that was as secluded as a large festival could be, much to his relief. doe eyes scanned the new environment, zeroing in on the dunk tank. having just about had it with the craze of the festival, the teenager needed an outlet. his battery was drained, close to dead and he needed desperately to recharge.

what better way to de-stress than to attempt to put the unfortunate soul sitting in the big blue box into the cold water that lie beneath their feet? jeongguk knew that he wasn’t good at a lot of things. baking, socializing, controlling his abilities, singing, and babysitting—just to name a few. however, his aim did not fall into that category ( or so he likes to believe. )

furrowed brows and narrowed eyes, sure signs of intense concentration were present on his face. a round baseball gripped tightly and fingers running along it red stitches, he drew his arm back to initiate the throw. just before the release, his head whipped to his left, distracted by an enthusiastic ( not to mention loud voice. ) his attention quickly shot back to the ball he had just thrown, only to realize it was too late. the failed attempt was embarrassingly no where near the target.

the boy bit the inside of his cheek, trying his hardest to not let out a frustrated groan. “it’d be pretty lit if you didn’t ruin my focus,” he muttered under his breath. no malice in his voice, just pure disappointment as he stepped aside to allow the girl with powdered sugar all over her face and fingers to take a shot.

“jeongguk!” her expression was ( unsurprisingly ) as absolutely sunny as ever. “why are you laying around here? be my partner for the summer games!”

bright. it was way too bright for his liking. he found himself squinting at the girl before him, eyes struggling to adjust to the sudden warmth she radiated—a sharp contrast to his dark, quiet room. he blinked once, blinked twice, struggling to comprehend her justification for disturbing his slumber. “you want me of all people to be your partner?” his voice went up an octave higher than it should have, the result of surprise, confusion, and doubt all jumbled in one.

there were times the boy wished he had the words: “warning: rank c” flashing above his head. a clear indication to steer clear from the wreck that was jeon jeongguk. control was something he could not afford and victory was a luxury he never strived for. zero confidence in his abilities, he stayed away from the summer games roster at all costs for the general welfare of not only himself, but also the public ( speaking of public, did he mention that he hates large crowds and unwanted attention? )

hands fidgeted with the hem of his shirt as teeth sunk into his slightly chapped lips. doe eyes darted around the hall, looking anywhere but at her bright, hopeful ones. jeongguk hated letting others down, hated the guilt that pressed against his chest whenever he did. but what more can a reckless cosmic manipulating introvert do?

“sure, this awful-in-combat, rank c, space face who can only make pretty pictures with stars right here would love to be your partner,” he began, tone practically dripping in sarcasm. “i’m sure you’re planning to fail terribly at the games, anyways.” he mustered up the courage to meet her gaze, effort concentrated on shooting yeri a cold, unamused stare. that should do it, he thought nervously, waiting for the smile on her face to disappear and the sunlight in her eyes to dim.

Karaoke Bros

He was pretty sure the boy was out of wits, he actually didn’t care enough to check his expression, simply dragging the other with him to the karaoke bar he regularly visited. He also introduced himself to the kid so he wouldn’t seem to rude “Oh and the name’s Jung Joonyoung, who’s also going to drag you out on a weekly basis to do this and won’t ever inform you when exactly.”

Oh, he was going to have so much fun.

mondays in and of themselves were bad—but monday mornings were worse. in a world full of unpleasantries, there was nothing more dreadful than the early hours of the first day of the week, reminding one that the freedom of the weekend was no more, signifying the start of an exhausting ( often hell-like ) week.

when his alarm rang at seven am that monday morning, jeongguk’s body mindlessly followed its usual regime: fingers hit the snooze button about three times, body slowly rolled itself out of his warm bed, eyes half shut as he brushed his teeth, changed his clothes, and headed out the door with a backpack secure on his back, ready to head to class. despite the repetitiveness of it all, he found comfort in the consistency. spontaneity was much too risky for the boy who preferred the expected. never in a million years would he think to derive from this bland, but safe way of life—that is until a foreign hand grabbed onto his arm and began to drag him away from the routine he had become so accustomed to.

the startled boy jumped ( quite literally ) as if the physical contact sent an electrical shock down his arm. doe eyes widened for a fraction of a second before narrowing at the stranger with the audacity to harass jeon jeongguk himself. “what in the world do you think you’re doing?” he hissed. the introvert barely spoke to people he didn’t know, let alone sing. “i don’t remember asking for your name or to be dragged around against my will like this,” he stated bluntly, trying his best to lace venom into his words. this was not a place for his nerves to seep through. when it came to situations like this, one needed to stand their ground, fight fire with fire. “unless you want more than just demolished vocal chords, i strongly suggest you let me go,” he managed through gritted teeth, struggling against the elder’s firm grip. a loose threat perhaps, but jeongguk really didn’t want to find out.

the sweet tang of the vanilla soft serve melted in his mouth as his dark brown eyes scanned the venue. a sigh left his sticky lips as he took in the sight of the long line for the kissing booth. his friends were excitedly waiting in the never ending queue for a supposed chance to kiss the most popular girl in school. an image of a glaring girl and her equally angry brother flashed through his mind quickly before he shook it off. an over exaggeration, perhaps, but jeongguk really did not want to take any risks when a possible beheading was involved.

avoiding the booth like the plague, the bored boy decided to make his own fun. wandering around the festival, jeongguk felt at peace. with everyone he knew and their mothers in line for the popular booth, the rest of the venue was relatively empty. crowds were never the teenager’s forte, so for that he was grateful. having been forced to participate in the festivities against his own will, he found the quietness a pleasant surprise. giddy off the wave of content, he decided to step out of his comfort zone. the lines for the rides were shorter now that everyone was preoccupied, a perfect opportunity for jeongguk to test the waters.

as he was looking around to decide which attraction to tackle first, his eyes landed on a familiar, lanky frame. with a small smile etched on his lips, jeongguk quickly made his way over to the boy, shaking in line. nimble fingers tapped his friend’s shoulder as his eyes gleamed with excitement. “i know plastic horses going in a circle at 0.5 miles an hour is extremely scary, right? don’t worry, it’s your lucky day because i got your back.”

the hot summer sun and humid air signified many things: long days at the beach, short shorts and flip flops, ice cream sundaes, and of course the dreaded nexus summer games. jeon jeongguk could care less.

he loved popcorn and cotton candy as much as the next person, but crowds and noise were definitely not his cup of tea. the games were made for those who were drunk off the adrenaline that coursed through their veins as they cunningly used their abilities and agility to maneuver through the courses. the eighteen year old of topic would much rather stay in his dorm and sleep, thank you very much. the fact that he could barely utilize his powers in combat without destroying something, or someone for that matter, was also a good enough reason for him to opt out of the games. unfortunately, a certain someone had other ideas.

that morning in particular, the exhausted teenager was lazing around on his comfortable bed. after a long night of sacrificing sleep for a date with the stars, jeongguk’s heavy eyelids were finally starting to weigh themselves down. if it wasn’t for the persistent knocking, the boy would have drifted off into the land of dreams. a groan and a few dazed stumbles later, his hand found its way to the doorknob. “who the hell could it be,” he mumbled as the large door opened to reveal the thief that was robbing him of his sleep.
