Honestly, if the series was to end at such a time, I'd be utterly disappointed.
What this series has always focused on were parallels, repetions, cyclic behaviours and routine.
Becoming nothingness would mean reaching Nirvana, but what is Nirvana if not balance?
The ironic thing is, balance was the only the gems had in the beginning of the series.
A neverending life means that, sooner or later, everything exciting will be experienced.
After that, there's balance.
No need to do anything spectacular, 'cause it has already been done.
It's definitely not the "acknowledged" way to get to Nirvana, but what if, instead of moving emotions aside, they embraced them as strongly and fully as they can, until a balance is reached?
The main problem with earthly desires has always been death, the only true human limit.
Gems don't have that limit, they have time.
Earthly desires can't cause them true disappointment, because they will ALWAYS have time to try again, until they succeed.
Which is way I'm not at all worried about them becoming nothingness, because Ichikawa has always given her fair share of criticism to Buddhism, and this would keep the streak going (reaching Nirvana not through the absence of emotions, but thanks to emotions and desires).
Ok I know, I just spat out some idiotic stuff, and not really in a coherent way, but that's kind of how my head works.
