Martina and Jose Torres were the picture perfect couple. They were happy, loving and full of life. Everyone could see that from the minute they met them. But not everyone knew everything about the two perfect parents. Martina was an orphan from the time she was six years old, she was raised in an orphanage in Colombia until she was eighteen. When the vibrant girl turned eighteen she had nowhere to go but she dreamed of a better life for herself. She got a visa and moved to the states at eighteen, to go to school and study to become a doctor. All she ever wanted in life was to be a doctor, and have a family of her own.
Years went by and Martina had excelled in school, it wasn’t until her first year as a med student that she met Jose Torres. He was a beautiful and intellectual man, gorgeous jet black hair and wonderful brown eyes. Martina was taking by him the minute she met him. He was quite a few years old, and by few he was like ten. But the women didn’t care about that, she didn’t care if he was that, she wanted to explore all the things that she dreamed of with this man.
It was long before Martina and Jose became the couple that everyone saw. Jose was a good man, he was one of the top doctors in Boston, and Martina was making her way up the ladder as a doctor. Years went by and the two got married, but neither of them knew much about their past lives; the only thing that each of them knew was that they loved each other.
On valentine’s day 1993, Bennett Carlos Torres was born. It was a day that Martina will never forget because she had dreamed all her life of having a child and it was a real struggle to have one. Her and her husband had spent years trying to have baby and finally he had arrived. He was the center of their universe and nothing else in the world had mattered.
Bennett was a vibraint and loving child, smart, and beautiful, looking much like his father as he grew older. But his heart was much like his mother’s; he always wanted to help people. He didn’t know much about the world because his mother had always kept him so closed off from it. When the boy was thirteen, his parents made him move to New York, the year before he was supposed to start high school. Both his parents had gotten better job offers at Mount Sania hospital and couldn’t turn it down.
To say Bennett was angry, would be valid, because he was, but he knew that moving to another city, or state would be an opportunity of a life time. He moved into a nice little house with his parents, and everything was perfect. Time went by and he met his best friend Rosemary who made him feel at home the minute he stepped foot in New York.
The two of them were pretty much inseperable, always hanging out and it was nice to have a friend that just made you feel loved. Bennett’s parents spent so much time at work, that he never really saw them. As he grew older, he started exploring things, trying to figure out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. He had always been aware of the world around him, but he never really knew exactly where he fit into that puzzle.
His parents never explained anything about his past, he spent most of his life believing that he was just a boring old human, that was until the day he tried to save his high school sweetheart and her entire family. It started out like any other night, but Bennett was awoken to the sounds of a fire alarm going off, he hadn’t realized he had fallen asleep there after spending the entire day with his girlfriend Gracie. The boy, who was tall and lanky at sixteen years old wasn’t aware of how the fire even started, all he knew was that the room he was in was up in flames.
Bennett panicked because he didn’t know what was going on, everything was fine, everything seemed fine hours before, but he realized that the flames were spreading and his girlfriend was no where to be found, and neither was his phone. He rushed out of the room, running right through the fire not even realizing that he could do that, he was filled was so much energy to get Gracie and her family out of their. Gracie was still no where to be found, so Bennett moved throughout the house waking up her parents, who were asleep in the bedroom next to hers. The fire was spreading faster then he thought it would, but the parents managed to get out, taking their youngest son, who was only two out with them.
But Bennett stayed behind much to their dismay, because he needed to find Gracie, he needed to save her. He knew if she wasn’t in the room that she was probably either gone to find her little sister or in the bathroom. But the smoke was getting back, and the house was nearly completely engulfed in flames before the fire fighters arrived, but the fire didn’t bug Bennett. He managed to escape the house, with Gracie’s younger sister, but he couldn’t find her, the firemen insisted that he leave, so he did.
When he emerged from the house, and got checked out, the firemen were in aware that he wasn’t severely burned. It was almost as if he hadn’t literally walked through fire, and that’s when everything in his life changed. He lost Gracie, turns out that she never made it out of the bathroom and he had abandoned her. Bennett, heart was broken, but Rosemary always helped. It was finally then that he did his research and asked his parents what they really were. He didn’t understand how he didn’t die that night, because he should have and he didn’t. His parents had explained that what happened to Gracie was a tragic accident but also that he was a Phoenix.
He never understood why his parents didn’t tell him and he spent all his life trying to understand who he was, but he understood it a lot more. He blamed himself because he figured he may have been the one to accidentally set the house on fire, but he would never truly know.
Being a Phoenix was weird and confusing and he understood why his parents didn’t tell him, it was because they were afraid. Was he a monster, maybe? He didn’t want to believe that at all. He knew about the supernatural world long before he even knew he was a phoenix but now it made so much more sense to him, why fire never scared him. Why whenever he got burned it never hurt.
After losing Gracie, Bennett had vowed that he would do everything he could to save people. Much like his parents he decided against medical school and instead decided to become a fire fighter. What those men did that night amazed him, even if he couldn’t save her, at least he could try and save someone else. He literally could walk through fire, without the equipment and he wouldn’t get burned. The academy accepted him when he was 21 and before Bennett knew it he was graduating and decided to join the NYFD. He’s just living his good life with his roommates and trying his best to not set things on fire, instead he’s trying to save people from them.
