You build your confidence by doing the things you promised yourself that you would do
What is survival, what is the bare minimum & what should you be giving to yourself?
Survival is the mode many people operate in without even realizing it & it looks like setting three alarms just to drag yourself out of bed for work. It looks like eating fast food in the car because cooking feels impossible. It looks like scrolling until 2 a.m. because your brain is too fried to shut off. Survival is doing the bare minimum just to keep your head above water
The bare minimum is meeting the lowest level of your needs, but not in a way that really feeds you, like sleeping 5 hours a night so you can function at work but still tired all day. Paying your bills on time, but never saving for anything that makes you happy. Even a yogurt can make your day sometimes, I’m not talking about anything over the top here. Talking to friends (the ones you have) is the bare minimum. How often do those conversations go deeper than pleasantries?
The bare minimum keeps your body alive, but it doesn’t keep your soul alive. The little dopamine hits are basically the scraps of gas on your car you’re hoping will take you another mile
So what should you be giving to yourself?
Sleep that actually restores you, not just knocks you out
Food that fuels your body instead of depleting it
Relationships where you can be fully seen, not just tolerated
Breaks that are nourishing to your soul, not just distractions
Giving to yourself means choosing practices that make you glad to wake up tomorrow. It’s upgrading from “just enough” to “more than enough.” It’s deciding that rest, happiness & fulfillment aren’t luxuries you guys, they’re part of your baseline as a human being
Survival is a season we go through in life here and there, but it’s not the destination. You were not meant to live on scraps of energy, time or love. You were meant to feel alive ✨
If you’re desperate for love, you’ll convince yourself to overlook red flags. You’ll excuse bad behavior & minimize your own needs just to have someone. When deep down, you know you’re settling. That’s what desperation does, it tricks you into believing crumbs are a feast
But when you’ve built a life you actually like & you’ve invested in yourself, created routines, friendships, passions and a sense of self worth, you’re no longer choosing out of lack. You’re choosing from a place of strength and clarity. You can actually look at a partner and ask yourself if they add peace, happiness and depth to the life you already love or if they take away from it
If you’re not afraid of being alone, you’re not rushing into situations that drain you. It means you won’t tolerate people who can’t meet you where you are. And it means the love you do accept will be real not just a bandage for loneliness
Build your life first. Make it so good that anyone who wants to be with you has to be a true addition, not a replacement for your own happiness
“Someone somewhere is searching for you in every person they meet.”
— Unknown
And they will meet you once they have met their true self
Sometimes we believe that isolating ourselves from certain situations or emotions means we’re healing. We convince ourselves that avoiding difficult scenarios is a sign of strength or independence. But in reality, we’re often confusing avoidance for true healing
We confuse avoidance for independence or healing with:
Pushing people away = maintaining control
Staying busy = prioritizing self growth
Avoiding vulnerability = guarding your heart
Suppressing needs = being self sufficient
Relying on yourself only = self-reliance
Isolating from others = personal space
Avoiding deeper connections = preserving emotional balance
Avoiding commitment = freedom
Avoiding emotions = strength
Shutting people out = self reliance
Running from conflict = protecting your energy
Dismissing feelings = self sufficiency
Ghosting people = protecting yourself
Refusing to talk = peace
How we love ourselves is how we teach others to love us — Examples of self love in action
Imagine you have a friend who constantly cancels plans last minute. If you don’t value your time and just accept it, they’ll keep doing it. But if you love yourself enough to say, “Hey, I value my time, and I’d appreciate a heads up if you can’t make it,” you set a boundary. That teaches them to be more considerate of you
If you criticize yourself a lot—saying things like “I’m so dumb” or “I’ll never be good enough”—people around you will subconsciously believe it’s okay to talk to you that way. But if you speak about yourself with kindness and confidence others will mirror that and treat you with more respect
If you settle for breadcrumbs in dating—accepting minimal effort, inconsistency, or lack of emotional availability—you’re showing that you don’t require more. But if you love yourself enough to walk away from half hearted connections, you teach others that being with you requires genuine care and effort
Imagine your partner frequently pushes your boundaries, whether it’s pressuring you to do something you’re uncomfortable with or disregarding your needs. If you let it slide, they’ll keep doing it. But if you love yourself enough to say, “I need my boundaries to be respected, or this won’t work for me,” you teach them that your comfort and limits are non negotiable
Let's say you text someone and they consistently take days to respond while being active elsewhere. If you continue engaging as if nothing is wrong, they’ll keep deprioritizing you. But if you love yourself enough to match their energy—or disengage completely—you teach them that your presence is a privilege, not an afterthought
If you have a coworker who constantly gossips and tries to drag you into negative conversations. If you engage, they’ll assume you’re okay with it. But if you love yourself enough to say, “I prefer to keep things positive and professional,” you teach them to respect your values and boundaries
How to develop discipline:
1. Set clear goals. What do you want to accomplish and why does it matter to you? Break the goals into small, actionable steps (feels doable).
2. Create a daily schedule that prioritizes most important items on the list. Keep it consistent to form habits over time.
3. Start small. Focus on one discipline building habit at a time to avoid getting overwhelmed. Gradually increase your commitments little by little.
4. Get rid of distractions that hinder your focus (e.g., social media during work).
5. Use accountability partners if possible. And/or track your habits. Use an app or check off from your list (this feels so good!)
6. Have self control! Resist small urges to build willpower (e.g., delay instant gratification). Commit to showing up even when you don’t feel like it. Especially when you don’t feel like it.
7. Stay consistent. Discipline is built by sticking to your commitments daily, not just when it’s convenient. Progress, not perfection is what matters.
8. Embrace the discomfort. Challenges are growth opportunities. Train yourself to act despite discomfort or boredom.
9. Celebrate every win & reward yourself for milestones to stay motivated.
10. Reflect on failures without judgment and adjust your plan. You will have to adjust your plans quite a few times. Don’t get set in your ways.
11. Spend time with disciplined and goal oriented people. You become who you surround yourself with. Their habits will inspire and influence you positively.
12. Keep your WHY in mind.
