I’m gonna answer the second question first—Luz is not necessarily “closed-off” about it, but she’s selective about how much is divulged to most people. For instance, if you ask directly, she’d essentially say, “I was created/genetically modified in a secret research facility (JEIGRR) to have powers, was rescued by a journalist, and now I’m Sun Spinner,” more or less. Also, her Earth’s Peter Parker being dead is not a secret either, people know she took on the mantle after him. Only after some deeper connections are forged is when Luz would be comfortable going into the emotional difficulties in foster care (mainly because she feels like she sounds ungrateful).
The whole “created to be a living weapon” martyr-complex stuff is VERY difficult to get out of her, though. It’s not something she admits verbally; rather it’s moreso something that others can read in her actions/behaviors, if that makes sense. She’s very much one of those people who come off super normal and unassuming, and then they do something that makes you go “OH, yeah, no well-adjusted person does that”.
Now does Miguel know? Yes, though he learns it in bits & pieces over time. He starts at knowing the standard one-sentence answer I mentioned earlier, told to him by Luz herself. At this point, his assumption is that Luz’s background is very similar to his own— not bit by a spider, but genetically altered by experimental design. However, as mentioned in a previous post, when Miguel finds out that her Earth is unstable for some reason, he starts digging to get to the bottom of it.
He actually first asks LYLA to start looking into Luz’s bg, with which he’s able to find some snippets of conversation between Luz and his AI where she brings up parts of her story he didn’t know. However, it’s not enough to explain the algorithm’s readings, so he decided to speak to Luz himself.
When he eventually has the “heart to heart” with her about the situation on Earth-651, she immediately opens up like, “Oh yeah, it might be because I’m not technically a Spider, only by name”, because it’s neither something she’s ashamed of nor thought would be an issue. It just never came up. Then, as mentioned in that same post, the ~2 wks of deliberation and drama as they figure out what to do opens the door for a lot more detail regarding Luz’s story and why she does what she does.
PAUSE, I realized I’ve been talking this whole time about Luz and her emotional baggage, which as I’ve been yapping about, she clearly keeps close to her chest. The physical/verbal abuse from her time at JEIGRR tho? She does NOT talk about that. Friends/acquaintances just know that she’s a little physically avoidant at times. Miguel on the other hand clocked it within the first few months of knowing her.
He was giving a post-mission debrief to Luz and the rest of the team for that particular occasion. He was doing his usual loud voice & exaggerated hand movements while doling out a scolding because of some hiccups here or there (he runs a tight ship, okay?). It wasn’t directed at her specifically, and he didn’t think he was necessarily yelling at them, but Miguel didn’t miss the way Luz flinched when he flung his arm out in exasperation. So yeah, Miguel is acutely aware of that aspect from their very early stages, hence his cautious and gentler approach with her compared to most.

I was just wondering does Peter ever just drop off Mayday to Miguel basically forcing him to babysit. Like Luz will just walk into HQ and just see Miguel trying to work being all nonchalant with Mayday crawling all over him, and it’s not even shocking it’s just the average Thursday at this point

I wrote a short blurb on something similar here actually, but yeah, I assume it’s not uncommon to see Miguel walking around HQ, on calls, or in meetings just,, holding baby May (or more like being used as May’s personal jungle gym). As if it’s about as standard as a coffee cup in hand.
Though I imagine Miguel was lowkey embarrassed the first time Luz saw him being crawled all over by Mayday, especially because he could see her biting the inside of her cheek trying to hold back a laugh. I mean can you imagine having to look your crush dead in the eyes and hold normal conversation while a rambunctious child is pulling your hair into all sorts of wack directions, drooling on you, etc.? RIP Miguel 💀
So this is barely a headcanon because bro was literally watching Miles on security cams as he walked into HQ. I know this man is bad with respecting privacy. Though I don't think its with malicious intent, I think he's just someone who likes to always be in the know.
Anyway, what came to my head is Luz having a lil sketchbook/notebook on her side of the console that she tends to doodle in when she's thinking or taking a break. She has little sketches in there, quick notes for later reference, Spider suit redesigns and stuff, just a smattering of things, yeah? Very much like that scene in ATSV with Miles.
Well of course, Miguel being Miguel, notices everything and is always one to pry. He can't help it. Also, i think with 2099 being so screen and tech oriented, I doubt physical mediums of art or notetaking is common. Obviously he's seen it before, but like, it's not something he is very often actively in the presence of. SO when he first notices Luz using the little book, his interest is piqued but he doesn't say or do anything. But when it makes an appearance more often, he kind of…sneaks glances. Never enough to actually see exactly what she's doing, but enough to spur his curiousity. He's just a loser, okay, and he wants to get to know more about Luz without having to be so obvious as to ask her outright about her interests. Because God forbid anyone knows he's whipped.
Sometimes when he sees she's scribbling things, he'll make his way over to her desk space, lean over her with the excuse of being there to "check on you, see if you needed anything", trying to catch a glimpse. But like most artists, she'll discreetly flip the book shut, or shuffle it off to the side where it's out of his line of sight.
So flash forward, its late on a random Tuesday, Luz is wrapping up her tasks, about to "clock out" for the day, so to speak. She's doodling again while the final updates she's completed are finishing uploading, while she and Miguel are making small talk about a few things here and there. He mentions offhand about Mayday having an allergic reaction to one of the strawberry pastries in the cafeteria according to Peter, and he notices the pause after the "oh?" in Luz's voice. When he looks over, she's writing something down near the back of the book. So she keeps notes on people?, he thinks, and is immediately like, I need to see what she has on me.
Now all of a sudden he's wracked with this unshakable urge to go flip through and see what Luz has in there. But to his credit, he really does try his hardest not to give in to the temptation. It was probably like, three hours after she left that he was like well one little look wouldn't hurt anyone, right?
So he sheepishly inches over to her side of the platform, finds the drawer he saw her slip it into before leaving, and takes out the little book. And then he flips to somewhere the back where he saw her jot down that note earlier. Flipping around a bit he finds a list of birthdays, some scribbles about potential gift ideas, "no strawberry for baby May!", and other little details.
Though he hated to admit it, he was disappointed to find nothing written about himself. Flipping further forward in the book, he found sketches of Luz's late cat, a line in the middle reading "I miss my baby :(", color swatches and drafts for suit redesigns, lots of sketches of Jess, Peter and May, and many other Society members. And then to his surprise, pages upon pages of himself. Of course he gets the ego boost of his life (not that he needed it), feeling himself oh so giddy on the inside because clearly she finds him appealing enough to dedicate this much space and time to him. But he's got a toothy grin on despite himself and his heart is full.
And then he hears a "Miguel??", and it’s SO over. He jolts upright like he was struck by lightning, snapping the book shut, standing totally red-handed in front of Luz.
"What are you doing here?" He splutters out accusingly, as if he's not the one at fault here.
"I'm looking for my cardigan. What are you doing touching my stuff???" Luz shoots back, trying to now snatch it out of his hands. He's holding it a little above his head, just out of her reach, all smug like "I didn't know you were an artist". She barely spoke to him two days after that, but he was able to broker a truce by gifting her a set of inking pens he'd found at an antique shop.
As they got closer over time, Luz gets less cagey about her art around him, sometimes showing him a few of her suit design drafts for feedback. She doesn't mention the drawings of him and neither does he. Though, when Miguel notices she's sketching at an angle suspiciously aligned with him, he'll stand a stiller than usual, maybe even subtly fix his hair or tilt his head to give her a better angle.
So because Luz lacks Spider-specific powers, I imagine her inability to stick to walls leads to many a messy situation. Especially so in SSHQ, where almost everything is topsy turvy.
For instance, Luz's very first time visiting HQ began with a slippery start. Following her acceptance of the invite to Spider Society, Luz stepped through the gyroscopic dimensional doorway after Miguel and Jess. But as they portaled out of Earth-651, careening one after the other through the twisted chute, Luz watched Miguel and Jess landed on a dimly lit metal platform. As she neared the exit herself, Luz braced for impact, flipping herself around to land feet first.
She touched down on the landing between the two Spiders…and promptly plummeted headfirst down the apparently upside-down elevator shaft. She shrieked unceremoniously as Miguel's hand flew out after her, though she caught herself by shooting a web back to the floor-ceiling.
"You don't stick?", that ridiculous O'Hara jerk asked, his nonchalance striking a nerve. Clinging on for dear life, face flushed with both embarrassment and the blood rushing. to her head, Luz just ground out a "NO" as the windows whooshed past her in the opposite direction. Miguel ended up having to carry her in a firefighter's hold until they reached a part of HQ where she could stand on her own two feet.
Miguel improved the isolated gravity systems across HQ shortly afterwards, though that didn't mean Luz was entirely safe. Another upside-down ordeal occurred when the gravity systems failed after a facility-wide update triggered a short-circuit. Luz was in the middle of a post-mission debrief as the main presenter amongst new recruits, with Jess as supervisor. Minutes after the blip, the screens flickered on and off. And then all of a sudden Luz is slamming into the low ceiling with a scream, her whole audience of newbies stifling laughter. Jess never lets her live it down.
After a few other incidents involving an unlucky Luz, Miguel tweaked her boots to have suctioning capabilities to keep her right-side up.
would Hobbi (sorry if I spelling their names) quien and the other teens also bully Miguel about his totally obvious crush on Luz. I know Peter definitely tried to be a hype man
YES, Peter is absolutely a (terrible) hype man for Miguel!! More specifically, Peter tries very hard to be a wingman for Miguel, and Miguel tries equally hard not to strangle Peter. Jess also does background work to push Luz and Miguel to admit their feelings, but is much less “hands-on” about it.
With both Hobie and Gwen, I think they’re much more likely to tease Luz than Miguel. As in, Miguel absolutely gets to suffer through their silent grins and raised eyebrows, maybe even a comment or snicker here or there. But Luz catches the brunt of it, mainly because she’s more accessible and gets more obviously flustered by the jokes in comparison.
Essentially, Jess and Peter are better at messing with Miguel (because they know how to get under his skin), while Hobie, Gwen and other teen Spiders are better at giving Luz grief instead.
I love how u write Miguel as this ma who is usually confident in his abilities and a very emotionaly constipated man, is absolutely thrown way off balance when it comes to Luz, like he’s a just a sad little puppy dog that wants his queen. I would be to honestly for Luz she is a devia

Summary: Luz hosts a dinner party at her place for her friends, AKA Miguel's close circle within Spider Society. But she struggles to tamp down her nerves, worrying a certain someone isn't enjoying himself.

Luz braced against the countertop, fingers drumming erratically. She was sweating.
It's fine, she insisted, I'M fine. What are you being so chicken for? But the light chatter and clinking of silverware in the other room still made its way into the quiet of her kitchen, stirring the little butterflies in her stomach she was trying so hard to kill. She'd made a plan, a stupid one, really, that she didn't think would actually work, and now it was here, in her face, and Luz had to reckon with it. Dammit.
"Hey, Luz! Need a hand or something?", Jess called over the polite din, signalling that dinner was coming quickly to a close.
"Nonono, you're fine! I'm just grabbing something!", Luz dismissed, forcing herself to release the tightness that had climbed its way into her throat. You really are overthinking this, girl. It was only dinner, she reminded herself. Dinner that she made, that she served at her own place, that was being eaten by a few friends, not at all including a certain someone who made her think and rethink every single thing she did. It was fine.
She'd been so caught up in her own thoughts, the footsteps behind her hadn't registered.
"That shrimp pasta was incredible, Luz," came a deep baritone, physically rattling her almost off her feet. Luz spun her head to face Miguel, whose large, warm hand was now resting on her shoulder.
"I didn't know you were such a good cook," he added with a soft look.
She blinked twice, trying to figure out how her racing thoughts had summoned him, of all people, here. Miguel didn't seem to notice her restrained alarm, a massive bicep eclipsing her vision as he placed the dishes he'd cleared from the table into the sink in front of her. Oh, it clicked after a few seconds delay. Luz let out a shaky laugh in thanks, before attempting to shoo him back out of the kitchen. But that damn, stubborn man, he couldn't leave things be without trying to be useful. He offered to help, opening the fridge to start putting the leftovers away.
"No!", she said with too much vigor. She winced.
"I-uh, I've got it from here," Luz added hastily, "thanks," she smiled, aiming for demure but not sure she stuck the landing. He looked at her for a solid moment, with too much thought behind his eyes for Luz's comfort, before nodding curtly and heading back out.
She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. Look, lets just get this over with. You wanted this, didn't you? Steeling herself, Luz opened the fridge door again, taking out a lidded glass tray with both hands. She left it on the countertop, turning around to grab serving utensils and small plates. Behind her, Peter B., the third of her party guests, popped in with little May in tow. Before Luz could stop him, he grabbed the tray, handing May the spoons to hold as he dismissed Luz's insistence to let her handle the hosting. Well shit. She stood there with her hands empty.
Luz let out a cold sigh, slowly resigning herself to walk back out into the dining room. She came to stand at the long end of the table, watching her friends take care of clearing the table and setting plates. This is good and I want this, she swallowed, feeling herself put on a polite smile. I want this, Luz persisted, forcing her shoulders down and head up, pretending not to see Miguel's eyes in her periphery. I want this, I want this, I want this. Peter unwrapped the glass dish for Jess to start slicing, but neither made it past choking on their own spit.
"Woooahhoho wait a minute—"
"Oh my god, are you for real?"
Curious, Miguel peeked across the table to see what the uproar was about. But at one glance, he fell silent, eyes boring straight into Luz.
"I know you don't usually make a big deal of it," Luz started, lashes subtly fluttering as she clasped her hands in front of her. "But I didn't want it pass by without even a little bit of celebration … ", Luz grinned with some pride, albeit mostly with trepidation.
In the center of the table sat an otherwise conventional dish of tiramisu…save for the message sprawled across it. Nestled between the strawberries and chocolate shavings sprinkled across it sat 3 words: Happy Birthday Miguel.
She had braced for the sudden cacophony, heart jumping at the initial excitement, and had considered perhaps some awkwardness, but she hadn't expected her special guest to react so…mortified? Shit, she panicked, shit shit SHIT, he hates it!
His piercing gaze never wavered as his irises swam with crimson red. Luz swallowed thickly, feeling her palms sweat at the almost imperceptible tightening of his lips—something Miguel only does when he's holding back his fangs. Though Jess and Peter laugh and cajole around them, Luz had filtered the noise out, with nothing but her building embarrassment echoing in the pin-drop silence between them.
"I—I was hoping this would be, uh, low-key enough to suit you…but I just thought," she hurried out, wetting her lips as her thoughts fizzled to a stop. Luz's cheeks burned furiously. When she found her voice again, it barely carried across the table. "I—If anyone deserves to be celebrated, it's you."
It didn't matter, though; Miguel caught every word.
In a flash, Miguel crossed the room. Luz jolted at his unexpected speed, instinctively pulling back as he stood so suddenly in front of her. But any ferocity she'd read into his movement was completely absent in his face, now only an arms length away. All the hard lines and familiar angles of Miguel's face had melted into something so…soft. The gentleness of his gaze—sweet, round eyes, still sparkling brightly—was matched by his subtle touch, hovering just above Luz's waist. Luz shivered just barely as Miguel's callused fingers held her elbow instead, brushing up to hold her arm.
With a light tug, he brought her tense form into his hold, wrapping his arms loosely around her shoulders. Body still rigid from shock, Luz couldn't help the twinge of nerves that came from suddenly having biceps the size of her skull wrapped around her head. When her mind caught up to reality, she dropped her shoulders, her attention shifting instead to the way her nose was all but buried against Miguel's chest, his cologne enveloping her entirely. If her pulse hadn't been erratic before, it sure was now. But even muffled by the pounding of both their heartbeats, Luz heard a quiet "thank you," rumble through Miguel's chest.
And just as quickly as it had begun, it ended. Miguel pulled away, the both of them brought back to the moment. The hug had been awkward, sure, but the electricity of it had left them both flushed and fluttery. Any shyness they felt was immediately compounded by their forgotten audience, though, who were doing a terrible job of pretending not to have noticed a thing. But, as polite guests do, they carried on as if nothing happened. Ever the psychic, Jess shot Luz a subtle grin before weaving Miguel back into casual conversation. Bastard, Luz thought as she watched Miguel clear his throat and slip back into his usual demeanor. She, on the other hand, was still not sure if her soul had made its way back into her chest just yet. Sensing this, Peter swooped in for the rescue.
"Gosh, dinner was wonderful Luz, I don't know how you did it all by yourself!", he started, grabbing an armful of dishes from the table. He handed a few to Luz as he quirked his head toward the kitchen.
"Lemme give you a hand with the clean-up, yeah?", Peter pressed, steering Luz by the shoulder into the other room. Nodding quickly though absently, she let her legs carry her to the sink. White-knuckling the edge, she felt Peter come up behind her, little May's soft coos bubbling up alongside him.
Peter chuckled lightly as he reached around Luz, sliding his stack of plates into the sink.
"You okay?", he whispered through a toothy grin.
"I dunno," she winced, fighting her own budding smile. "Is my face as red as it feels?"
Peter only cackled in response.
The party settled back into a comfortable rhythm, the soft sway of music smoothing over the last remnants of that electric touch. But eventually, as the dishes piled up and the chatter died down, the night drew to an end. Luz had expected Miguel to make a speedy exit as soon as it was respectable enough to do so, but to her surprise he didn't…and was entirely unsure how to feel about it. Rather, it was Peter and May who left first, though not without a few tears being shed about an extra serving of dessert. Jess left shortly after, saddled with both a load of leftovers and Luz's big, desperate eyes pleading her to stay just a little longer, just until he leaves first, pleaseeeee? But Jess scrunched her nose with a knowing smile and said her goodbyes, leaving Luz with, well, the giant, handsome, anxiety-inducing elephant in the room.
As the door shut with a click, Luz braved a glance over her shoulder. It had been a terrible decision, though, (even if unavoidable) because Miguel was already looking at her. He stood in the living room, hands planted on his hips as their eyes met. Never able to hold his gaze, Luz glanced down, fidgeting with her curls as she crossed the room, willing herself to just be normal, damnit! Only once she was right in front of him did she look up. After a beat, she opened her mouth to speak, but Miguel beat her to it.
"I should go," he rasped, straightening out his shoulders.
"I—oh," Luz paused.
I should have expected him to say that, she thought. I did expect him to say that. Hell, isn't that what I wanted him to say?
But Miguel sensed her subtle disappointment before even she had recognized it herself.
"Not that I didn't enjoy tonight!" he reassured quickly, trying to salvage any offense he might have caused.
"I did, I—", he huffed out a small laugh, running his fingers through his hair. "I don't think I've celebrated my birthday in years."
Luz pursed her lips at Miguel, tilting her head to the side.
"That's too bad, you've missed out on a lot of cake," she hummed in faux concern. Spurred by his relaxed, rather sweet tone, Luz touched his wrist gently.
"Take the tiramisu with you then, to make up for it," Luz chirped, "it's for you anyways!"
Miguel laughed more openly then, as she tugged him towards the kitchen.
"What, all of it?"
"Yes, all of it!"
"Nonono, Luz, I can't," Miguel said, grinning despite himself.
"And why not?" Luz shot over her shoulder, already wrapping the dessert dish up for him.
"Luz, it's too much, I can't possibly—"
Miguel choked on his spit as Luz whirled on her heel to meet him. Her brows were furrowed above her big, brown doe eyes, her crestfallen face sending his heart into an erratic mess.
"You didn't like it," Luz whispered, with a sad, slow blink.
"No! I mean yes! I mean, of course I did! I did enjoy it, querida, really!", he spluttered in a panic, hands help up as if he'd broken something.
"Oh good," Luz smiled brightly, dropping the act. "Then you should take all of it!" She finished, holding out the tray in clear victory.
Miguel narrowed his eyes at her manipulative antics, but dropped his head in defeat, fighting the matching smile creeping across his face. He stepped towards Luz then, humming in acknowledgment as he once again took hold of her arms. Slowly, he ran his hands down from her elbows to her wrists before gently taking his gift from her hands.
"Happy Birthday, Miguel," Luz blushed one last time.
"Thank you, Luz", he breathed, brushing a stray curl from her face. And once again, he pulled away.
It was only after Luz had walked him to the door, after he'd shot her one last look over his shoulder, after he'd made it back to his own empty apartment, that Miguel let his composure drop. In the dark of his bedroom he laid awake, tossing and turning as his flustered mind kept him reeling. He couldn't shake the scent of Luz, the softness of her hair, or how perfectly she fit against his chest. And those shy eyes, the way they batted at him so prettily as she wished him 'happy birthday'? The way she called him worthy of it too, God, he almost believed it. He was going to be sick. Miguel found himself hopelessly haunted by her through the small hours of the night, staring up at the ceiling as his heart raced till dawn.
I just had a thought. So in the movie the whole reason why they have the spider society is to prevent worlds from basically imploding on itself. And as shown in the movie or at least implied, they aren’t always able to save a world. I was wonder how this would affect Luz. Also side question sorry if u have mentioned this in another post but has Miguel told Luz about gabby and that whole situation, and how did she handle that
Oooh great questions!
As for the first: I mentioned it briefly in my character sheet for Luz, but I think the risk of multiversal collapse is very real to her because of how her own actions had “destabilizing” effects on her world (Earth-651). I think it was hard on her to have to reckon with the fact that the work she was doing to try to keep her city safe was also potentially tearing it apart based on the algorithm. Her choice was basically like, stop being spider-woman/saving people to protect the whole dimension VS keep being a Spider/saving people and damn them to dimension-wide death.
But the thing is, being a Spider, taking on the mantle of a dear friend, that is a HUGE part of Luz’s self-worth and identity, so just walking away from it felt impossible, if not entirely disheartening. I mean, imagine the fabric of your whole dimension telling you personally that you’re not needed nor wanted, and are actually the kill switch that blows everything up!
So yeah, I think the idea of “sacrifice” as a Spider-person resonates with her very deeply in connection to the risk of collapsing a dimension. I mean, she had to walk away from everyone and everything she’d known and built in her life to keep it from disintegrating. So I think she’s one of the few people in Society who have an acute sense of the risks they tread with what they do. But in that vein, I don’t believe Luz has actually seen a dimension collapse up front, so it’s more of a looming fear rather than a tangible one.
For the second question: honestly, I have not actually thought that deeply about that! So walk with me as I figure it out as I type!
I think contrary to popular opinion, Miguel really isn’t as tight-lidded about the event as people think he is? Like, the whole “I know because I broke it myself” scene was done in front of like,,,, SO many people.
I truly don’t think it’s uncommon knowledge, and I think any curious Spider who has joined Society would naturally ask that question and get a response more or less like what Miles got. Because yeah, you can’t expect people to blindly follow you in doing X without telling them the Real and Tangible Risks™️ of not doing it, right? I think the bigger “secret” for lack of a better term, is that Miguel is so not over it and is lowkey spiraling because of it.
So yeah, Luz was vaguely aware of the situation within the first few months of joining via Miguel himself, trying to outline the risks and responsibilities of the job she’s taking up. But she probably got deeper insight into the reality of it through Jess or Peter B. later on, as far as they are aware of it.
The more emotional damages that Miguel keeps under wraps aren’t made obvious until Luz is around 4-5 months into joining. At that point, she’s reckoning with her own permanent departure from Earth-651, and the brutal reality and sheer isolation of that decision was something that really Miguel could only understand. And while I don’t think Miguel ever fully opens up about the effect of losing Gabby until like, at least 5 months into being in an official relationship, the beginnings of those conversations started there.
How does she handle it? I think the first time it comes up in the above mentioned context, Luz’s first reaction is “it’s not the same”. In her eyes, Miguel lost Gabby and his new purpose was driven by that, and nobody was stopping him from “absolving himself” by saving others to make up for the lives he lost.
She on the other hand lost her Earth’s Peter, and now she can’t even make up for it, can’t seek salvation in acts of heroism because that would just make things worse. I think she really bares all here, dropping the carefully upheld facade of being happy & unbothered all the time, and just resigns herself to the idea that she’s someone who was just made to always be the outsider looking in, to forever love from afar.
Which cracks at a part of Miguel that he’s been avoiding his whole life, and I think they really understand one another on a fundamental level from here on out.
