I've wanted to talk about a thing I noticed, or, rather, for some reason never saw mentioned in the pokemon fandom, specifically among Ghetsis fans
So, you know how when it comes to poke-villains, there are often jokes being thrown around based on their nationality (the region they come from)? Like how Lysandre is french, Giovanni is japanese, etc.? In such posts Ghetsis, as one of those villains, is being depicted as american, since he's originally from Unova, but I feel like that's not really accurate because literally everything about him is... German
And like, I have absolutely no issue with him being described as american, I just specifically wanted to “spread awareness” and perhaps inspire people for more headcanons for him or something, so here goes:
Myself, I always thought of Ghetsis as german and shared this headcanon together with @o0w0p: I speak german, I live in Germany and it was pretty easy for me to spot a few things; that his name, for example, is based on german musical notes — in the original and german versions of the manga his name is written as G-cis, and despite there also being a G note in the english names for notes, the -cis particle is the german name for C♯. I always knew his name meant “the devil's chord”, but I've only made a correlation with it being german when I started taking music classes.
Next is his surname, which is Gropius, and it belongs to a famous german architect – I know this because, funny enough, I study at a place located on a street named after the man.
Next telltale is, well, his overall story and role in the games – he's got everything to do with monarchy, castles, royalty and so on – even the uniform of Plasma resembles knights; and despite Pokemon being a fantasy setting with regions having their own history and culture, they are still based on real countries, and you cannot tell me everything previously described doesn't immediately remind one of Europe. And, obviously, Europe is not just Germany, but the previous facts described add up onto it.
Next one is his lead Pokemon – Hydreigon, all of which's evolution stages' names are based on the german words for “one, two, three” – Deino, Zweilous and Hydreigon. Again, this fact would mean nothing on it's own, but it does add up to the overall impression.
I'm not sure if I'd listed everything, but I think that's pretty convincing as it is. Again, this post has only been created in order to inspire people and to analyze the character, so it's okay if you don't agree with my opinion. Other than that, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk guys I appreciate
