ęąĘÉ´á´á´ęąÉŞęą: Megumi's a lot more like Satoru than you thought!
á´Ąá´Ęá´ á´á´á´É´á´: 1.4k words
â"Children are like sponges. They absorb whatever is shown to them."
âThat's what one of the online blogs you often down in a spiral said.
âDespite barely graduating into adulthood, you and Satoru took on the arduous task of caring for a 6 year old and his older sister.
âBefore you knew it, being a parent easily slipped into your life. Shopping trips included stops at the children aisles, buying takeout included two more orders, and laundry was twice the amount.
âAt first, you were worried yet convinced it would be fine. Satoru's obnoxiousness that warded off a lot of peopleâexcept youâwouldn't be a problem to an impressionable kid, right?
âExcept it was absolutely a concern.
âMegumi, you've come to learn, was the type of kid who kept to himself most of the time. You were sure that the wrinkles he'd get when he ages weren't going to be smile lines but scowl lines instead.
ââMegumi's short temper and Satoru's endless grins were a recipe for disaster.
â"Megumi? A sponge?" You cocked your head to the side.
âThe realm of imagination drafted up an image of such a scenario: Megumi with Satoru's toothy smile.
âAn instant shiver coiled down your spine, sending you upright. "Of course not..." You murmured to yourself as you scrolled to another blog.
âFor the foreseeable future, you believed the two would be constantly at odds with each other.
â
â"Baby!" You exclaimed in excited tones as you barged into the home.
âThe white-haired sorcerer you regarded as your other half was on the couch, watching Megumi do his homework. Satoru's eyes slid to yours, a similar excitement instantly sparking in his expression.
â"You won't believe it, sweets!" He calls out, straightening up on the couch.
âThe sheathed Cursed tool on your hip drops with a thud onto the entryway. You kicked your shoes off hastily, not minding where they landed, before trotting to the living room.
â"I'm home, Gumi." You smiled softly to the little boy. You placed the usual deep kiss onto his chubby cheek.
âMegumi merely nods, already used to your affection. His eyes were trained on the booklet in front of himâa drawing assignment.
âYou plopped down onto the couch beside your boyfriend who seemed thrilled to spew out what he wanted to say.
â"I ended my mission quicker than usual. This better be good." You huffed playfully. He pulls you in by wrapping an arm around your shoulder which you respond to by curling closer to him.
â"Remember Utahime from Kyoto?" He starts, mischief crawling on his skin.
âYou nodded, "The one who wears a unique uniform?"
âHe nods fervently, "Yes! Yes!"
âThe obnoxious grin on his face was crawling with playfulness.
â"Guess what I caught Shoko doing earlier?" His cat-like stare reaches you, shining in pure amusement.
âThe clue swam in the way the cerulean blue swirled with anticipation.
âYour eyes widened, "No shot!" You slapped his chest. "No way!"
âHe beams brighter after your enthusiastic reaction. The smug snag of his mouth and sprawled legs told much of his expertise in gossip.
â"I saw Shoko writing a love letter!" Satoru gossipsâabsolutely proud of himself for getting this information, "When I took a peek, it definitely had Utahime's name."
â"So romantic!" You commented with an equally proud toneâpride in the way your lovesick friend had finally acted on her pining towards the Kyoto student.
â"So that's why she bought flowers the other day!" You pieced the two scenarios together.
âSatoru leaned back into the couch with you, comfortably holding you against him.
â"That's old news, sweets," He muses, "Shoko bought a ticket to Kyoto, ya'know! Didn't you notice how she had a big bag earlier?"
â"You're right!" You gasped.
â"Did you also see how she now has a red and white keychain on her phone? And the way she stiffens whenever Kyoto is brought up in mission assignments?"
âWith each hint Satoru brought up, your memories did line up with his observations.
â"Teased her about it too," His free hand flies in emphasis, "From what I gathered, they're still talking."
â"Talking phase, huh?" You chuckled, "Do you think it's going well?"
â"I think so! I heard from Nanami that he saw Shoko laughing by herself while looking at her phone."
â"How do you even manage to pry that out of Nanami? You're the best at getting info, Toru." You pulled on his cheek, earning a cheeky grin from the sorcerer.
â"I've got a reputation to uphold after all." He barks with his chest swelling in pride.
â"Do letters mean something?" Megumi's voice suddenly cuts through the informative discussion.
âBoth Satoru and you turned to the spiky-haired boy who had been listening in on the conversation without your knowledge. His wide eyes were looking up at the two of you, expectant.
â"Hmm," Satoru thinks with a hand on his chin, "Depends on what the letter says, Megs."
â"And who sends it." You added, attention fully on the boy.
âHe nods, as if digesting the information, before asking...
â"Then what do the letters inside Tsumiki's bag mean?"
âAlmost immediately, you both shot up from the couch. Satoru's eyes had widened, mirroring your shocked expression.
âYour gaze locked with Satoru's in a brief moment of understanding.
âInstantly, you were crouched beside Megumi while Satoru was on the other side.
â"What letters?" Satoru asks, a little too excited.
âThe spiky-haired child bounces his gaze between his two parents that were crowding him for more information.
âMegumi answersâperhaps a little too serious as well, "Some boy gave Tsumiki a letter the other day after school. There were hearts on it."
â"Hearts?!" Satoru exclaims, the blue in his gaze sparkling with thrilling amusement.
â"Who was it, Megumi?" The white haired sorcerer probed, inching closer in interest.
âThe boy responds, "A classmate. I think Haru was his name."
âSatoru nods multiple times, "What does he look like? What was your sister's reaction? Did she like it?"
â"He has black hairâthe one with the shaggy haircut in her class," Megumi answers without a reduction in engagement, "I also heard he's had a thing with another girl."
â"Oh?" Satoru leans in.
â"Tsumiki's reaction..." His little face scrunches up in deep thought, "She thanked him but I think there was something more to it."
âSatoru fully drops onto his ass on the carpet. His long legs crossed as he braced both palms on each knee.
â"Elaborate, little sorcerer," He instructed.
âThe assignment was long forgotten on the coffee table as Megumi spun on the floor pillow to face his father figure. It didn't take for the two to completely engage in a serious gossiping conversation.
âAs you looked at Satoru's engrossed expression and Megumi's eyes that were absolutely hooked into the topic, you realized how alike they were.
âGood lord.
âMegumi was a gossipmonger like Satoru.
â
âThe elementary school comes into view as the car follows the gentle curve in the road. Your hands drum along the steering wheel.
âYou drive past the school's signage crouched at the corner of the lot. Kids spilled out of the gates, jumping into the arms of their awaiting parents.
âLike those awkwardly standing guardians lingering by the pavement, you kept your eyes peeled for a certain boy and a lanky figure.
âSatoru mentioned that he'd be finishing his mission early and would be with Megumi by the time you arrived at the school.
âSo where the hell were they?
âYou parked the car by the curb, head moving left and right to spot any familiar figures.
âIt wasn't hard to spot the 6 foot giant in the sea of primary school students.
âSatoru's expression lights up almost immediately upon locking his gaze with yours through the windshield. Megumi was with himâsmall hand begrudgingly tucked within Satoru's grasp.
âThe two race to the car. Your boyfriend sported the usual stupid, obnoxiously sweet cheshire grin while an uncharacteristically determined expression was on Megumi's face.
âThe car door of the shotgun seat pulls open at the same time the rear does. Satoru slides into the car easily, one long leg after the other as Megumi hastily clambers in the back.
â"How was your day?" You asked to both boys. The car doors shut in unison.
âSatoru leans over the console while Megumi grips the front leather seats and hovers into the space between.
âThe two boys look at you with sparkling eyes and breathless mouths twitching in excitement.
â"You won't believe what happened!" They exclaim together.
âYou couldn't resist the laugh that escaped you.
âLike father, like son.
á´á´á´Ęá´Ę'ęą É´á´á´á´: When I first watched jjk and that scene with the trio + ozawa, it was funny and refreshing to see Megumi being into the gossip-like scenario. I figured he must have gotten it from Gojo lmao. Also tried the small font style for the first time!
As always, any interaction is appreciated <3 thank u!
ęąĘÉ´á´á´ęąÉŞęą: After the death of the Star Plasma Vessel, Satoru was never the same. The price of his rebirth was you. What happens when you meet again a decade later when he hires you for a jobâolder but none the wiser?
á´á´á´Ęá´Ę'ęą É´á´á´á´: Must read part 2. No need to read part 1.
á´á´É´á´á´É´á´: Angst, Angst, and Angst. JJK s2 and manga spoilers. Friends to Lovers to Strangers. Exes reuniting. Working with an ex. Yearning tenfold. Mentions of blood, injuries, and illness. Happy ending (?). Long fic ahead! The real ending is pure angst and optional for sanityâs sake.

Part 1 â Part 2 â Part 3
The rain poured down in heavy crashes, drowning the streets in puddles and misty fog.
Satoru had texted you that today would be a continuation of the mission, with Nobara and Makiâa second year at Jujutsu High that you havenât seen before.
But you didnât replyârather, werenât able to.
Somehow, you woke up to a wonderful alarm: a twisting pain in your gut followed by the acidic burn rising in your throat. It went on for cycles in the morning, every hour ever since 4 in the morning.
By 8am, the nausea took another formâa vehement fever that would send a Victorian child to a premature grave. With all your tactical strength as a Grade 1 sorcerer, you were reduced to a panting, unmoving mess.
Curled in the bed with stacks of blankets that never seemed to warm you completely, you were out of your mind. It must have been the leftovers you ate yesterday.
The throbbing pulses in your temple nearly brought tears to your sore eyes; your limbs selectively complied with you, only managing a few steps before being taken down by the fever and muscle pains.
So you opted to rot in your bed with sad hopes that the pain would go away.
The downpour was loud enough that you didnât hear the knocks on your door and the subsequent creak that came from it.
âY/N?â
Through the bleary crack in your stiff eyes, you caught a messy blob of white and navy blue. Still, you didnât move, only allowing half of your face to peek out under the thick duvet.
âYou werenât replying to my messages so IâY/N?â Satoruâs voice fell quiet, cautiously entering your room. It smelled like lavender was haphazardly sprayed, unevenly distributed in the small space.
The mess of colors drew nearer to you eventually crouching down beside your bed. A warm hand pressed against the clammy skin on your forehead, a welcome support.
The scalding heat immediately greeted his palm, âYouâre burning up,â He noted.
You nodded, unable to sass him in your current state.
âIâll tell Nobara and Maki to go ahead without me.â He hummed, fishing out his phone and typing hastily with one hand. The fuzz in your head doesnât allow you to register the words coming from his mouth.
Satoru faces you once more, âDid you eat?â He asks in a feather-like tone.
The only answer he received was you burying further into the sheets. He lets out a soft chuckle before standing up, something soft resting in his frame.
He knew that you were child-like and as honest as a drunkard whenever you got sick.
He lifts his bandana to allow an eye to peep through. With one swoop of his eyes across the empty bedside table, he got his response.Â
âThank you for the answer, sweetheart. Leave it all to me!â Satoruâs voice is too loud and too cheerful to be comforting in the state you were in.
Despite the jarring joviality, you didnât resist the gentle hands that tucked you in properly nor the soothing brush of his knuckles against your cheek.
âSweets, you have to eat.â A voice dragged you from the realm of sleep.
A sleepy groan came from you. The distinct sound of rain slowly seeped into your disoriented mind.
âLater.â You rasped.
âYou said that 20 minutes ago. I've already reheated the food twice, sweetheart.â
â5 minutes.â
âNo matter what you say, youâre getting uââ
âPlease.â
After a brief pause, a deep sigh came from Satoru. The clink of ceramic softly thuds on the wooden bedside table.
Satoru flops down helplessly on the chair beside the bed, mumbling in whiny tones âsomething about being unfair and how you kept getting your way.Â
Eventually, your cuteness had lost its effect on the 28-year-old sorcerer by the 5th attempt. He forcefully ripped the blankets from you and endured the curses you flung at him with a cheeky smile.
âHere comes the airplane~â Satoru sings in hushed tones amidst the onslaught of rain outside.Â
He lifts the spoon with the porridge he made to your mouth, weaving the metal in the air in loops with accompanying woosh sounds.
Unfortunately, you donât have the energy to cuss him out, resorting to a scrunched expression instead.Â
Alongside the winning fever, you also lost to the gleaming, expectant look in Satoruâs eyes as he held up the spoon in front of your lips. He had forwent the bandana, cobalt blue sparkling in the dim room.
âCome on, sweets.â He nudges.Â
With furrowed brows and a reluctant tremble in your lips, you opened your mouth and received the spoonful.Â
He withdraws the utensil with a victorious and utterly overjoyed expression, a wide toothy grin stretching across his face.Â
The white locks cascaded over his forehead. A fragment of the Satoru you knew all those years ago lingered in his visage when his hair was down. The same wild boy you knew was now living in the body of the worldâs strongest sorcerer.
âI like it when your hair's down.âÂ
The spoon buried in congee stopped stirring. He turns to you.Â
Without the bandana, Satoru was as honest as any emotion. The corners of his eyes softened, the blue flickering with an entity akin to guilt and devotion in one poisonous blend.
âIâll make sure to wear it like this more often,â He offers another smile, gentler and real.
Another spoonful lifts to your lips.
Your nose crinkles, âDunâ want to eat.â
He grins childishly, âJust one more, sweets.âÂ
You shook your head. The small pout on your face only amused him further.
âShould I call the airplane once more?â He coos.Â
You hurriedly clamped down on the spoon, swallowing the congee.Â
He pulls back with triumph written all over his face, as if to say âThatâs what I thought.â
The crackles of thunder rattled the windows, the pour of rain wasnât easing upâif anything, it only fell stronger.
âToruâŚâ You whined in between hot heaves, âItâs too cold.â
His palm on your shoulder is the sole comfort you relied on. His voice is low and quiet as he murmurs, âIâve already brought out all the blankets you have here, sweets.â
âIf you give me 10 minutes, I can go out and buy more blankets for you.â His hand reaches up and gently caresses the crown of your head.
The tranquilizing strokes of his fingers on your hair cradled you amidst the white-hot illness. You found yourself leaning into his touch.
âNo, dunâ leave me.â You whispered, small as you curled up to generate more heat.
A forgotten feeling blossoms in Satoruâs chest, the type that makes him lose all sense of rationality. In one beat, your problems became his and he was willing to shoulder all of it.
âAnd weatherâs too bad for you to go outâŚâ You managed through a cough.
He threads his fingers through your hair. Such a silly girl, not even weather could touch him with his infinity, he thought.
âAlright, sweetheart. Iâm not going anywhere.â He whispers.
His heart rested impossibly soft in his chest, reminiscent of 11 years ago. As you glided on and off sleep, Satoru stayed there as an anchor, stroking your hair and adjusting your blankets when they slipped.
As he laid his gaze on you, thoughts flew and never left his mind. How many times have you gotten sick without anyone to take care of you during the time he wasnât there?
How many times did you skip meals when you couldnât fit it in your schedule?
Similarly, how many times did you cry alone? Smile alone? Celebrate alone?
âToru, too cold.â You stirred awake again, brows furrowed. The blankets atop your frame slightly shook with the trembles of your shoulders.
Satoru swallowed the stubborn lump in his throat. The air stilled with only the crackles of lightning in the distance resounding in the room.Â
The clanky chair Satoru was on creaked.
Then the mattress sunk on one side. Warmth filled your body as a pair of arms wrapped around you, pulling you into an embrace. You cracked your bleary eyes open to find a mess of white and blue behind.
Satoru cradled you in his hug, not too tightâas if he wasnât sure if he was allowed toâbut unwavering, steady. Older now, his shoulders engulfed you and his arms were heavy against you.
âHowâs this, sweetheart?â He murmured into your hair. He hoped you couldnât feel the rapid beats of his heart slamming against his chest.
There was no response, only the soft rise and fall of your person under the thick blankets.Â
Until you turned in his hold and snuggled against him with a sleepy groan. The feeling of your nose pressing into his throat had electricity shocking through his body. Your balled hands under the blankets laid between the two of you as you curled into himâsearching for him.
At the silent answer, Satoru slipped one arm under your head while the other held you securely against him, drawing soothing circles on your back.
His chin rested on the top of your head, mind overridden with gripping, breathtaking emotions. If he could will his heart to calm, he would haveâbut after all this time and especially when it came to you, he learned that the organ functioned outside of him.
You were just as soft as his memories told him.Â
The fluttered eyelashes he couldnât help but admire, the slight flush of your cheeks, and the way you clung to him like heâs all you ever wanted.Â
Satoru was a man who was unraveling, his person caught aflame by the mere spark of you.
His lips brushed against your forehead in a kiss he didnât mean to make.
âIâm not going anywhere,â He echoed, âNever again.âÂ
Satoru woke to the vibrations of his phone on your bedside table. Rain continued to pour outside, unrelenting.Â
He opened his bleary eyes, a little disoriented. His gaze shifts down and finds you tucked safely in his armsâcheek now pressed against his chest with your hand gripping onto the fabric on his back.
Satoru had fallen asleep without realizing.Â
He brushes a fallen lock past your ears. Afraid heâd wake you, he slowly reached for the device that twitched with each unrelenting buzz.
Maki 2nd year.
The contact blared on his screen.Â
Right, he left Maki and Nobara the task of completing the mission.
Without so much a budge in his face, he holds down the power button and swipes across the screen. The phone, forced into a shutdown, was returned to the bedside table.
He settles back into the bed with you, careful and sleepy. He sighs against your hair as he closes his eyes.
In this moment, nothing mattered more than the sleeping girl he loved all his life until now.
Even if this were temporary.
Anger. Yes, Anger. That was the name of the feeling that constricted your heart in its hands, the heat that sprawled to your face.
You hated Satoru.
Even more so after he had spent 3 days taking care of you.Â
Loathing was the ugly monster that aroused when his blue eyes found yours, when he met your scowls with juvenile grins, when he chose the spot beside you in a spacious room.
There was no one who hated Satoru as much as you did.
âHappy birthday, Y/N.â Shoko greeted you with a gentle, mature smile.Â
Her smile deepened when your eyes widened in delighted surprise.
âI didnât think youâd remember.â You laughed lightly.
You couldnât remember the last time someone greeted you on your birthday. Regretfully, the past 11 years were quite lonelyâhaving detached from your family for safety purposes and completely isolated from your only friends in Jujutsu High.
You donât think you did anything for your previous birthday. Nor the ones before it.
If anything, the date became an ordinary day. Merely something to put down on personal information sheets and a date to answer when someone asked.
The thoughts were cut off by Shokoâs outstretched hand, a white paper-bag hanging from her fingers.
âHow could I forget my dear friendâs birthday?â
The words struck a soft spot within you, causing an appreciative smile to appear on your face.Â
âThank you, Shoko.â The gift was light in your grasp. You were acutely aware of how the present represented the way Shoko cherished your friendship despite the long absence in between.
Panda turned to you, surprised, âItâs your birthday, Y/N-san?â
You nodded, prompting a âHappy birthday.â from the cheerful student.Â
Shoko flops down onto her office chair, one leg slung over the other.
âI would have treated you to lunch if I wasnât so busy, Y/N. Forgive me.â She sighs out with a slight groan.
Waving a dismissive hand, you chuckled lightly, âDonât worry yourself over unnecessary things, Shoko.âÂ
After that brief period of illness, you hadnât contacted Satoru nor did he. The only message that broke the silence was a mission with Panda, a second year student, as per the job he hired you on.
However, when you got back to Jujutsu High from the successful mission, Satoru immediately disappeared. He had something to do with the higherups, he mentioned shortly before vanishing.Â
He didnât even greet you with a Happy Birthday.Â
An unwelcome bitterness weighed heavily on your shoulders when he left without remembering your birthday. Why were you expecting anyway? Wasnât your birthday just another ordinary day?
A muscle feathered in your jaw.
You shouldnât expect anything from a man like Satoru.Â
âGojo-san probably wonât return.â Panda idly comments.Â
You nodded, âSo it seems.â
The ache settled in your arms as you stood up, âWell, that missionâs over so Iâll be heading out first, Panda.â You smiled politely, which Panda returned, the ever bright and reliable student that he was.
âCelebrate your birthday, Y/N-san!â Panda exclaimed, waving his paw as you drew nearer to the door.
You gave him a polite smile over the shoulder before disappearing into the attached corridor.Â
Shoko sighed and fished for a cigarette on her desk, âSatoru really is so stupid.â
Panda affirms, âI agree, Shoko-san.â
The coldness of the narrow, grimy apartment corridors stung into your skin. Dark mold crawled along the grooves and cracks in the stone railings. Despite the scent of rotting cardboard, this was the home you had spent the past few years parading through life in.
Afternoon light shone on the wooden door of your apartment. The effort in your joints bled with the descent of the sun, reminiscent as heavy aches in your muscles.
One hand routinely reached for the keys in your pocket while the other wrapped around the handle.
The metal keys jangled in discordant fashion. You pushed the door open at the click of the lock.Â
The creak of the old and chipped door revealed the reality you faced each day. The only steady comfort you found in the perpetually bleak days were the swallowing shadows that hogged every space in your apartment.
And the silence. The silence was comforting yet a wrenching reminder of solitude.
HoweverâŚ
Instead of darkness and stillness, you found Satoru attempting to tape one end of a hanging banner that extended from your doorway to the attached living room.
The white-haired giant freezes as your eyes locked, tape awkwardly stuck to his fingers. Your and his wide eyes locked.
âYouâre home way too early!â His voice was caught between a shriek and a whine.Â
Your feet remained rooted in your doorway.Â
He slaps the taped end onto the other wall. The string hung gold letters, arranged in the words, âHappy Birthday.â
Balloons of various colors filled the usually large space of your apartment; the curtains were drawn wide open, allowing the amber light to replace the long shadows; and Satoru dispelled the silence that ate away at you with his loudness.
A cake sat on the small dining table. Each component of the cake was a thought, a memory. The carefully crafted fondant was shaped into your favorite flowersâthere were many because he knew you liked to pick them off to snack on; the icing was your favorite colorâthe color that would always end up messily smeared across your lips.
And the flavor. It was the flavor you loved. Not the kind you pretended to love in front of others, but the kind that he used to find you sneakily snacking at 2am in the dorm kitchen.Â
The kind he used to buy and leave in the fridge, pretending as if it was only for his consumption. In actuality, heâd have bought it with the complete intention of letting you have the entire thing to yourself.
Your windpipe squeezed tightly, only permitting shallow breaths.Â
Satoru rushed, shuffling in long limbs, further into the room.Â
Then you heard the musical strum of an instrument. He returns, guitar expertly cradled in his arms. The old thing still had the stickers you placed on them 11 years ago, chipped at the edges.
The gallops your heart reached your ears as a thick lump developed in your throat.
His deft fingers glided across the strings, ringing out another tuneârhythmic and soothing.
You swear, he played this before. With just a few simple gestures, Satoru manages to uproot everything you knew.
This house wasn't yours anymore. You couldn't recognize it with the pop of color, with the sweetness in the wind, and the warmth.Â
Satoru inches closer, each slow step accompanied by a strum of his guitar.
No.
Sweat beaded at the back of your neck, heat surging from your toes to your head. The ground you stood upon felt unstable.
You wanted to run.Â
âHappy birthday to you,â He begins to sing in a deep tone, carrying that gentle playful cadence.
The biting emotion in your eyes could see both the teenage version of him and the one now. You could see the youth in the way he never stopped playing the guitar; the spirit in his grin when he looked at you.
And that familiar gleam in his eyes.
You knew what it was.
How could you not know? Not when the room was full of proof of it.
Hand-tied balloons and a manual pump poorly hidden, a cake thoughtfully created, and banners strung along the dreary walls.
Just one look at Satoru was enough to know what it was.
Love.
And it terrified you to your core.
Before he could finish the song, you turned on your heel and bolted.
The wind blew in your hair, heart drumming against your chest in dizzying pulses.
He canât love youâYou canât let him love you again. He canât undo what you spent a decade trying to rebuild.
âY/N?!â You hear his distant voice exclaiming from behind you, echoing in the empty halls.
You hated him. You hated how he still knew you so well; you hated how he kept the silly stickers on his guitar; you hated how you could still find it in yourself to love him.
You hated how he could unravel you with one look, even in silence, even in dark nights.
You took two steps down at a time.Â
Satoru was a threat to the walls you established. The force of your run had you almost crashing into the wall at the end of the staircase.Â
Air pulled from your lungs, burning.
The afternoon light glared as you entered the sunlit parking lot.Â
Run. Running away was the only thing you knew best.
Because you couldnât let the emotions you hid away come out again.Â
âY/N!â A hand clamps onto your wrist.
You immediately rip your arm from his grasp, twisting just enough to catch a glance of his expressionâblue eyes flickering with confusion and alarmity, face taut with determination.
âStop being so⌠soâ so You!â You cried, stumbling back.Â
He stops in front of you, eyes wide.
âWhat donât you understand? Why canât you leave me alone?â Hot tears spilled down your cheeks, nails digging painfully into your calloused palms.
âHow can you waltz back into my life like you didnât ruin it years ago?â
Guilt flashes through his expression, barely thereâyou knew he learned to mask his emotions quite well.
The words come out of your mouth before you could stop them, âEach time you come back, I find myself wanting to stay.â
You shook your head defiantly, âBut no. I wonât let you kill me like you did back then.â
âDonât you know? That nightâŚâ Satoruâs expression twists painfully at the reminder.
âThat nightâI wanted you to fight for me.â
You took one heavy step toward him, âI fought every day of our relationshipâfought against the idea of leaving.â
âBut it took you only one moment to leave me.â
Something frayed in his eyes, crystalline blue staring down at you.
âEach moment of weakness I felt, I endured it all. But the one time I couldnât keep it in anymore, you left.âÂ
âI chose you everyday but you couldnât do that for me.â Your voice turned hoarse.
The conflict in his expression amounts to an attempt, âIâm sorry, Y/Nââ
âHow can I believe you, Satoru?â The ends of your words cracked.
He stills.
âHow can I believe that you arenât the same person who took away the best years of my life?â Your heart wound in your chest.
The tears run along your jaw, âI wonât let you hurt me again.â
âI wonât let you ruin what Iâve worked so hard to regain,â You rubbed the edges of your swollen eyes with the back of your hand.
The furrow in your brows deepens, eyes narrowing at him.
âIf you truly wanted the best for me, youâd get out of my life.â You harshly stated, moving forward.
Without bumping shoulders, you strode past him to retreat back into your apartment. The clicks of your heels grew quieter as Satoru remained frozen in his spot.
That's what you wanted. That's what you convinced yourself to want.
You couldn't risk the unknown anymore. Not when uncertainty has taught you that hurt was waiting for you at the end of it all.Â
You obsessed with knowing, certainty.Â
But sometimes, faith preceded assurance.
The moment the silence of the chilly stairwell sunk into your flesh, instantaneous guilt flooded your senses.
The steps upward were heavier, fighting against the pull that made you want to run down the stairs and return to him.
You leaned against the railing.
Stupid. Idiotic. Soft.
You were too soft when it came to Satoru.
The sharp, harsh sunlight gave way to a cooler, dew-kissed twilight. The cake remained untouched, balloons that refused to deflate littered the floor of your living room, and one end of the banner detached from the wall, hanging pitifully.
You stayed holed up in your apartment, curled on the couch and absentmindedly witnessing the buzz of traffic subside into seldom whirrs of passing engines.
What have you done?
This might have been the last time you would ever see Satoru.
That was for the best. But such a thought seemed less and less persuasive with each hour you spent trying to convince yourself.
Instead, guilt sunk deeper into your soul.
Because you knew that you were lying to yourself.
Your mind reeled back to the emotions that only Satoru could bring out of you: The dizzying pounds of your heart whenever he drew near; the exhilarating sparks that crawled up your spine when his skin brushed against yours; and the riveting feeling that manifested as a crimson flush on your face when his eyes fell on yours.
That wasnât loathing. That was love.
And it scared you.
The few hours spent in muted solitude washed away the uncontrollable sensations you had felt in the heat of the moment. It left behind a bitter aftertaste of contrition that made your leg bounce against the carpet.
It was 8:43pm. A full 5 hours since then.Â
Despite the temptation of atoning for your mistakes through self-punishment, you needed to eat.
With a sigh, you shook off the ache in your knees from staying still for hours on end and made your way to the door. You swiped your keys off the counter.
The night breeze was chilly against your cheeks, the heat of the tiles collected the coolness of evening. You shut the door and made your way to the stairwell absentmindedly.
If anything, the coldness helped calm the raging emotions in your head. It silenced them until you reached a form of equilibrium.Â
You turned the corner.
Satoru probably went home. You've successfully chased away the one thing you ever found yourself to want.
You couldn't taste the happiness you thought finality would bring you. Instead, it was the flavor of sour regret.
Your feet stopped in your tracks.
Satoru was on the stairwell. He sat at the top of the stairs leading down, back facing you.Â
Due to his size, he took up nearly the entire space. It didnât help that he sprawled. His shoulders were stiff, cheek propped up by a fist on his knee.Â
The hunger in your stomach had disappeared, replaced with flapping butterflies.
You balled your hands into fists.
Has he stayed since your explosion?
An awkward lump formed in your throat. You slowly padded towards him.Â
Maybe he expected you to move past him, seeing as how he didnât move an inch until you sat down beside him, shoulders touching.
A pitiful attempt at reconciliation.
You placed your palms on your knees that were glued together, awkwardly small.
The only sound between the two of you were the occasional passing cars, air filled with things that were both uttered and unsaid.Â
âIâm going to stop teaching.âÂ
You whipped your gaze towards him in surprise. His blue eyes remained trained onto the stairs before you, deep in thought.
âAfter I figure out Sukunaâs vessel, Iâm going to stop teaching,â He murmurs, in gravely tones. You couldnât find the usual coltish spirit in his voice.
He was serious.Â
You opened your mouth to say something but he interrupted you.
âNo, it isnât because of you. Wellâyou were definitely a big part of it but it was about time that I stopped anyway.â He murmurs.
The words you screamed earlier echoed in your head.
How can I believe you, Satoru?
As his crystalline gaze, full of conviction, slid to yours, you found it. He gave you a reason to believe in him.
A small shaky smile expressed the way the rock in your chest disappeared. A low, dry chuckle left your lips as you placed your cheek on his shoulder.
âStupid idiot,â You whispered, âWhy the hell would you ever give up on your dream?â The mellow smile on your face stayed.
The man beside you had set his mind on creating a new generation of sorcerers that would overturn the stagnant and corrupt higher-ups. Everything he did and is now was in the pursuit of that goal.
So why in the world was he throwing it all away?
Satoru allows a mild smile to appear on his expression.
âIâm not giving up on it,â He whispers. His voice sends goosebumps on the back of your neck, close enough for you to hear the deep rumble in his voice.
âThere are other means to achieve my goal,â He continues.
âPlus, Iâve found something far more important.â
Your heart skips a beat.
The pause stretched slightly, allowing his words to sink into your soul.Â
Eventually, with a small fond groan, you turned your nose towards his neck.
âIdiot.â
An airy chuckle leaves him. His gaze locked onto you, silently observingâadoringâyou.
Maybe it was the air. The honest atmosphere that compelled your grievances to come out unfiltered.
âIâm sorry, Toru.â You whispered against his throat. âI didnât mean what I said about you getting out of my life.â
âI know, sweetheart.â The husk in his voice tickles your ears.
âIâm sorry too,â He whispers into your hair, âFor then and for now.â
âI thought I was doing the right thing. I was afraid of dragging you into my problems when you were already dealing with so much,â He explains.
âRiko and Suguru had left. I didnât want you to leave me too.â
âThe last thing I wanted was to lose you. And in doing that, I made the biggest mistake and it cost me you.âÂ
âBut Iâd be a bigger fool if I let you go now after finding you.â His tone was established, as if he couldnât forgive himself if he didnât try.
The nerve-racking sensation drummed into you.
âThen, letâs start over.â You offered.
âI donât want to start over.â He quickly insisted.
You pulled away just enough to look at him. Before your heart could crash to your toes, his hand cupped your cheek.
âI donât want to forget what I did,â He murmurs, âFor the rest of my life, I want to remember how important you are to me.â
âI want to remember what life was like without you,â The depths of the alluring cobalt in his eyes knew no bounds, âThat the past 11 years, I was merely surviving, not living.â
âEach day forward,â His forehead drops onto your shoulder, âI want you to know that everything is meaningless without you beside me.â
âYou breathe life into me, sweetheart,â The tip of his nose brushes against the column of your throat.
âI am nothing without you.â
Satoru was surrendering to his emotions in front of you, a man made of feelings he couldn't begin to understand. He was a man made to feel. Your presence naturally exposed the way he craved for you and the infinite magnetic pull that drew him to you.
âI think I was made to be yours, Y/N.â He admits, hands winding around your waist.
His arms were made to keep you warm, his abilities were made to protect you, his fingers were a blessing that allowed him to behold the softness of your skin.Â
Satoru lifted his gaze, âWould it be alright for me to be selfish again and ask you to trust me?â
His eyes are full of sincerity, at the borders of pleading. The moonlight swam in them, an infinite blue that captured you wholly.
Memories that used to feel like weapons aimed at you crumbled at the visage of him. How could you hate memories when it took the form of Satoru?
The darkness that plunged you into an endless void yelled at you to retreat, to run away. Ghosts of the past that haunted you every waking moment whispered fearsâof Satoru leaving you in fragments of yourself once again.
When you were young, you only knew how to run.
But as his thumb ran along your cheek, as the silence prolonged in anticipationâŚ
This time, it was different. You grew up, you weren't the same girl who let the world trample on her.Â
Satoru grew up too. He forever will be the type to turn mistakes into vowsâfinding ways to keep his word.
Although 11 years late, both of you came back to what you needed.
For just this moment, you let your fears and ghosts go.Â
It wasnât much, just a whispered yes.
But it said enough.
Satoru didnât waste a moment more as his lips crashed onto yours.
Once it registered in your head, you wrapped your arms around his neckâa kiss full of longing. Sleepless nights pondering about another chance with you poured into his lips.
His grip on your waist tightened, the hand on your cheek cradled your jaw as your lips moved in a dance that was never forgotten.Â
The kiss was sweeter than what your memories narrated. The breathtaking thrill of his mouth on yours sent adrenaline to surge in your veins, focused on nothing but the want to pull him closer.
His lips were made to kiss you, Satoru thought.
Satoru pulled away briefly, panting, âIâm still in love with you, Y/N.âÂ
Like a man starved, he kisses you again, hands reeling you closer to him than you already were. Your chests were flushed against each other. The rapid beats of your hearts met in unsynchronized songs but honest in the way its frequencies didnât calm.
âNever stopped.â He whispers in the intimate space between you.
Each kiss became more ardent as Satoru realized how much you wanted him too. When your fervent hands roamed, he released the wanton affection in him without shame.Â
In between kisses, he whispers huskily against your lips, âThe past 11 years were hell. God, I missed you.âÂ
You placed your hands on his cheeks, pulling him onto your mouth insatiably. His mouth greedily swallowed your satisfied sighs and gasps, searching for more.
The lack of air forced the two of you apart, postponing the heated kiss that dizzied you. His forehead was against yours as your hiked breaths intertwined in the space between.
The moonlight shone on him, his silver hair fell onto your skin like silk, gleaming in the twilight. The sight of him alone was electrifying.Â
The taste of his lips danced on yours.
âIâm still in love with you too, Satoru.â You admitted in the silence as your hand fell onto his chest, fingers running over the rapid beats underneath.
You balled your hand into a fist and lightly punched him, âDonât screw up this time.â You scolded in faux anger.
He laughs, glowing and breathless. His hands on your waist reeled you in until you were leaning onto him.
âNever again.â He presses a kiss on your forehead.
Maybe it was you. Maybe it was you who brought out the sparkle in his eyes, you who had the power to reduce him into that teenager 11 years ago.Â
Satoru looked at you as if you hung the stars. It was you who made the wonders in his head endless. He wanted nothing more than a life by your side, to be there when you laughed or cried.Â
âI wonât let you go, sweetheart,â He embraces you, one hand on the back of your head. His voice tickles the shell of your ear. âI am yours forever.â
Growl.
Both of you freeze, eyes wide.Â
The flush on your cheeks grew tenfoldâout of embarrassment this time. The rumbles of your stomach thoroughly ruined a perfect moment.Â
Satoru burst out in barks of laughter, hands flying from your waist as he howled in amusement. His head tips back slightly as the harmonic laughs roared from him.
âSatoru.â You grumbled in a pout.Â
You couldnât find it in yourself to get mad at him when his laugh was so beautiful to your ears. Something tells you he hasnât laughed this hard in a while.
He wipes the tears from the corners of his eyes.
âYou hungry, sweetheart?â He stands up, holding out his hand, âI know just the place.â
The embarrassment slowly fades into fondness the longer you beheld the tenderness in his visage.Â
You smiled, sliding your fingers onto his palm.
âIf itâs a place that serves mostly desserts, Iâm not going.â You mused as he hoisted you up onto your feet.
âToo bad.â He flashes you a toothy grin, âItâs only desserts.â
You rolled your eyes, one hand dusting your lap, âIt makes me wonder how youâve gone this long without a cavity.â
He didnât answer. The lack of a response has you looking back at him.
He was perched on a step below you; your eyes were now at the same level. His gaze seemed as if caressing youâadmiring you in the moment. His steady grasp on your hand tells you how affectionately conscious he is of your presence.
His thumb ran along your knuckles idly but you knew most of his attention was focused on holding you with his eyes.
âSatoru?â You asked in confusion.
âHappy birthday, Y/N.â He lifts your hand and places a featherlight kiss on the back of it.Â
The heat climbed onto your cheeks. âWhatâs this aboutâŚâ You grumbled, shy.
He only gives you a cheeky grin before intertwining your fingers, naturally.Â
âNothing. Letâs go get you food.â He leads you down the stairwell.Â
As his back faced you, hands attached to one another, you couldnât help the sweet feeling in your chest.
âStupid.â You murmured to yourself, smiling.
âAre you serious?!â Yuji practically screamed. Nobara immediately silenced him by smacking the back of his head.Â
He coughs from the sudden blow.Â
âKeep it down!â The chestnut-haired girl hissed.Â
âGojo-sensei got together with L/N-san?â Yuji asked once again in fervent curiosity while rubbing the sting at the back of his head.Â
Nobara nodded and answered in secretive manners, âFushiguro and I saw it with our own two eyes.â
Yujiâs eyes sparkled, his gaze going back and forth between the proud Nobara and the uninterested Megumi, âWhat were they doing?â Yuji asked, excited.
âThey were walking together!â Nobara smirked, proud of her observation.
Yujiâs excitement fell flat. Disbelief and a look asking if she was joking crossed the boyâs visage.
Megumi sighed, arms crossed.Â
âThey walk together all the time.â Yuji deadpanned.
âSomething about it was different this time!â Nobara argued.
âWere they at least holding hands?âÂ
Nobara stalled, âWell no, butââÂ
âWhoâs holding hands?â A voice interrupted.
The three turned and found Satoruâs smiling face, glowing like gold reflecting the sun. The students grimaced slightlyâhe smiled so widely that it was starting to look disturbing.
âNo one, sensei.â Nobara made a face.
âThen, letâs get on with training!â Satoru beamed.
Satoru was on a bench, thumb swiftly manoeuvring across the screen. He wasnât wearing his blindfoldâinstead, he sported dark rectangular glasses, snowy locks cascading down.
Nobara, drenched in drying sweat, turned to her two classmates.
Yuji was crouched down, waiting for the vending machine to dispense his break-time snack. On the other hand, Fushiguro was already halfway through his electrolyte drink.
âLetâs make a bet.â Nobara declared, hands perched on her hips.
The two turned to her.Â
âWhat kind of bet?â Yuji asked while reaching into the machine for his own drink.
Nobaraâs eyes briefly slid to Satoru in the distance who seemed a bit too happy on his phone. A wicked smile played on her lips as her excited gaze returned to her friends.
âIâll pay for you and Fushiguroâs dinner if it turns out that Gojo-sensei and L/N-san are dating!â She declared, pointing at herself.
âThatâs unfair!â Yuji groaned in playful annoyance, âEveryone knows theyâll probably get together eventually.â
The thrilled girl merely shrugs, âMaybe you shouldâve claimed it before I did.â
âWe didnât even know there was a bet until you started itâŚâ Yuji deadpanned.
Nobara shoves an index finger in Megumiâs direction who was unbothered by the conversation, simply downing the remnants of his drink.
âWhat do you say, Fushiguro?â She asks, bordering on an exclaim, âAre you in?â
Megumi throws away the plastic bottle of his empty drink, âI donât really care.â
âWell, we three have a deal then!â Nobara snickers.
âIâll pry it out of sensei one way or another!âÂ
â"Sensei, don't you think that L/N-san looks extremeâ" Nobara was cut off by a blow to the gut from her pink-haired friend.
Looks like someone didn't want to pay for her dinner tonight.Â
She gave her thick-skulled friend a smack on the crown of his head.Â
Nobara looked back at Gojo who was laughing and teasing Megumi. Another devious thought crossed her mind.
Time for another try!
âNobara's second attempt was at the tracks. In the wide field, the chestnut-haired girl jogged to the sidelines, near the bleachers where Gojo was perched on.Â
â"Sensei, are you andâ" Before she could finish, Panda was already grabbing the scruff of her uniform, dragging her back to the red running pavement.Â
âFor her third attempt, Nobara had escaped the sparring session and tried to catch up to Gojo who was observing them from a distance.
â"Sensei! Do you have a moment?" But even she couldn't fulfill her intentions when her two classmates, engaged in a fierce brawl, managed to involve her.
Megumiâs toad shikigami managed to capture Nobara instead of Yuji. As she grew farther from Gojo and nearer to the frog, she felt her short temper reach an all time high.
âNeedless to say, Nobara didn't gain a single chance to ask Gojo the dinner-winning question.
âThe three continued sparringâmore like getting beat up by a very frustrated Nobara who only knew punches as an outlet.Â
Orange light dwindled low in the sky, deepening the shade. Nevertheless, the trio was too fired up and far too stubborn to give up.Â
âYou spotted Satoru and his three newest students in the distance. Slowly, you made your way toward them.
â"Toru." You called out with a soft smile once you were in earshot.
âSatoru turns to you, silver hair drifting across his forehead and kissing the frame of his glasses. You didn't fail to notice the way the blue in his eyes lit up and the way his shoulders loosened.
â"Why are you here? You could've waited for me at your apartment." He asks gently, instantly making it his personal mission to be by your side.
â"I wanted to drop something off for Shoko," You answered. "Also, I wanted to ask you what you wanted for dinner."
â"You could've just said you missed me, you know." He teases, bending down as one arm naturally slides to your waist. "No need to make excuses using Shoko or food."Â
Like in the past, Satoru was shameless when it came to showing affection. There were too many times to count where a third party would yell at him to stop displaying PDA.
But he always waved them off. You knew it was his silent way of saying he wants to show you off.
âYou rolled your eyes, "I saw you a few hours ago at lunch."
â"4 hours is a long time." He counters, "I'm kinda hurt. Don't you miss me? Because I missed you."Â
âHe drops his chin onto your shoulder like a puppy whose ears are flat against his head.
â"If I say no, what would you do?" You arched a brow.
â"I might just die. Like right here."Â
â"How dramatic." A chuckle leaves you.
â"You call me dramatic for missing you? Sweets, you hurt me so." He whinesâlike a petulant child, he actually whines.Â
âYou chuckle before giving into his whims, "Alright, I missed you too, Satoru." You hummed, hand buried in his hair.
âHe finally dissolves his frumpy expression, resorting to that fond smile he wears exclusively around you.Â
â"Come on, let's go home," Your other hand reached for his, intertwining, "I'm thinking we get takeout."
âHe tightens his fingers against yours, locking them in place, "Baby, that's your third takeout meal this week."Â
âFourth, in actuality, but you didn't want to disclose that information to him.
â"It's fine." You replied, tugging him away from the training.
â"No. I'm cooking tonight." He sounds determined, following after you.
âFor a brief moment, Satoru stops in his tracks. He looks behind his shoulder as he exclaims in a full, loud voice that could bloom flowers from sheer joy, "That's it for today! I'll see you three tomorrow!"
âThe three students seemed to catch the memo, their attention glued onto the two of you. You catch how their eyes blew open and how they immediately stopped what they were doing.
âHe immediately turns back to you, hands still joined together, "Doesn't a hearty meal with a sweet treat sound nice?"
âYou snorted, leaning your temple onto his shoulder as you walked together, "That's exactly the type of food you get from ordering."
âSatoru gently lets go of your hand to instead pull you in closer by the waist. His lips brush against the top of your head, "You can't use cuteness to get what you want."
â"But it totally works on you."Â
â"Does not!"Â
â"It does."
âThe bickering continues, only growing softer with distance.
âThe three students were absolutely stunned. Yuji's jaw had dropped to the floor and Megumi stiffened, awkward in his spot on the grass.
âNobara's silhouette in the golden sun casted long shadows over the two boys.
âThe silence dragged on, only the whistling of the afternoon draft providing a victor's theme.
â"Pay up, you guys." There was a devilish giggle in her voice.
â"My dinner is secured, after all." Nobara snickers, twisted satisfaction written all over her winning grin.
Long days were inevitable. Yet, a part of Satoru loved them.
Because he knew, you were always waiting for him at home. After a dragging day, Satoru would come home to find you on the couch.
Almost immediately, he'd drop everything he was holding and plop down right beside you. He'd rest his head on your lap and wind his heavy arms around your waist.
Then came his favorite part.
Your hands would find their place in his hair, gently soothing the stress from his shoulder. The way your nails dragged along his scalp and the soft tug of his locks sent him melting into your touch.
âRough day, baby?â You would hum, tender adoration in your voice.
How he loved your voice.
âTerrible without you.â He'd say, as he usually did.
He'd push his cheek against your tummy, pressing a light kiss on the muscle each time. He always loved the little giggle you gave out from the ticklish sensation.
âDonât worry, let me take care of you.â You'd say in that tone he found comfort in.
Then he'd focus on the gentle thumps of your heartbeat, allowing the rhythm to ground him. Then he'd memorize the warmth of your body against himâhow tranquilizing it was to his guarded soul.
There was nothing as warm as you. Anything was bearable because he knew you were waiting for him.
That's all Satoru thought about as he bled out on the ground.
His rapid breaths turned soft and less frequent. Blood left the torn part of him, sprawling on the dirt and debris.
You were probably waiting for him.
That was the best comfort Satoru could ever have in his final moments.Â
The visage of your bright smileâboth older and the youngerâwere so beautiful to him. Memories of you flashed one by one.
From the first time you accompanied him when he was first learning to drive to the last time you kissed him before the fight with Sukuna.
A soft smile appeared on the strongestâs tired face.Â
Dying strangely felt like your embrace.
There was only one regret he had: that he couldn't marry you.
â"Satoru!" The scream rips out of your throat before you could process it. The terrain suddenly became too hostile, too slippery.
âYour feet slipped as they tried to overcome the debris. A stinging sensation followed by warmth running down your leg seared across your calf.Â
âBut you could care less. "Satoru!"Â
âWhen your feet struggled, your hands replaced them, digging into the soil as you ran up the hill of debris. The dust of cement caked under your jagged fingernails.
âWithin seconds, you were beside him. "Satoru!" Hands on his cheeks like you used to.
âYour vision blurred, your face hot. "FuckâFuckâ" One hand roamed along his chest as if you could do anything.
â"You idiot! Use your reverse cursed technique, you hear me?!" The burn in your throat ripped.
â"Toru, please." Your body felt cold, but not as cold as the skin against your palms, "Don't do this to me, Toru!â
âSatoru...â You croaked, bent over his body that withstood too much. âI just got you back. Donât do this to me!â You screamed.
Your words were wet, cracking at every syllable.
One hand fell from his cheek and ran over his chest. Your palm searched for that steady thump under his clothes, fingers messilyâdesperatelyâpalpating despite the shake.Â
The blue in his eyes had faded into a soulless gray. Briefly, the image of them filled your head: how beautiful they shone once, especially in the afternoon.
You didnât get to tell him that afternoon became your favorite time of day because heâd always be there.
âSatoru!â A wail bubbled at the back of your throat, tears falling onto the scars on his face.
Where do you go from here?
Your pride cost you everything and fate shoved that into your face.
Your hands gripped onto the fabric of his tattered shirt that clung to his cold skin, heavy with his blood. Your knuckles had turned white.
âI wonât be stubborn anymore, I-I wonât get mad if you have somewhere else to be anymore,â You begged through tears, âWe can goâWe can go taste all the desserts in Japan if you come back,â
âAnd Iâll wait each time. Iâll wait for you to come back.â You vowed in between gasps.
âSo come back to me, please,â Your forehead fell onto his, âPlease.â
11 years. 11 years lost. In that amount of time, you could have done something; you should have chased him.Â
You traded 11 years with Satoru to keep your pride intact.Â
Time that felt infinite with SatoruâTime that was never on your side from the start. It came and left too early, and returned too late.
Too little and way too late.
Your tears slid down his hollow cheeksâhoping this was a nightmare that youâd wake from. But the way your fingers traced the features you spent mapping in the dark, you knew this was real.
In the morning, heâd be gone. And for the rest of your life, youâd only have the memory of Gojo Satoru.
âToru, you promised youâd stay by my side,â You cried against his lips, âI want you here with me.âÂ
âI love you, Toru.â
Kneeling at the altar of fate, the woman who swore off love crumbled with the pleas to change the prophecy befallen.Â
The woman who thought she was above pleading was in tears, begging to whatever deity there was to return the love that had been torn from her, to undo the future that had been promised to her.
Pride meant nothing to you when the choir of love sang so sweetly.
Satoru was right.
There is no curse more twisted than love.

Part 1 â Part 2 â Part 3
You never meet the same person twice, not even in the same person.
The death of the Star Plasma Vessel took the sorcery world by storm.Â
Riko Amanai was the person entrusted to Satoru and Suguru. Entrusting her personâher soulâto the two teen sorcerers only solidified the substantial importance of her role.
âSatoru.â A stabbing sensation pulsed in your lungs from the lack of air.Â
His hair, an imitation of snow, concealed his eyes and consequently, the fragility of attempting to hold himself together within it. The threat of utterly fracturing was a fever he couldnât shake off.
As soon as Satoruâs gaze beheld you, he heard a crack in his chest. His steps turned heavy as if he waded through thick mud knee-deepâhis eyes kept steady on you. The relief he found in your countenance served to heighten the thumping threat because he knew his safe haven was near.
And he was yours.
The tears you couldnât cry after seeing Haibara under a white sheet seared your eyes.Â
Satoru lunged for you, arms wrapping around your waist in a growing tight embrace as you looped yours around his neck. Tears burned through denial and fell freely.
His forehead drops onto your shoulder, nose pressed against the pulse in your neck.Â
Words werenât able to carry the pain anymore. The tears were messengers of immeasurable grief and unspeakable love.Â
The cold of the dampness on your shoulder tapped at your skin, reminding you to hold him tighter. Neither of you said anything but also spoke of everything.
You hated seeing Satoru like this.
The limitless sky you found in his eyes found boundaries, his cheeks have sunken, and his skin dulled from any life, grayer than the usual pinkish healthful glow he held to him.
You hated how the only signs that he was still alive were the nights he zipped awake.Â
â..oru!â
â...Toru!âÂ
âSatoru!â
Satoru shot up in half a second. Shallow, rapid breaths were being yanked from his lungs; the cold beads of sweat ran down the sides of his face.
The room was too dark, shrouded by the night. His hands frantically search out of instinct and his eyes dart before landing on your worried expressionâsomething familiar, his anchor.
Your hand was warm against the crushing grip of his fingers. He expects a wince but your face is steady. He calls for you in less than a whisper.
âIâm here.â The heat from your body thawed the coils in his muscles.Â
You wrapped your free arm around his shoulders as you curled up to his side, âIâm here.âÂ
His head falls onto your shoulder. All of his waking senses craved for the company of intimacy.
âBreathe, baby. Itâs okay.â Your whispers were the balm to his guarded soul. The hands that scraped gently along his scalp soothed the fading panic.
You sighed in relief once he stopped shaking. The tea you brewed sat lonely and forgotten on the bedside table.
âItâs just a dream, Toru.âÂ
The phantom weight of Riko Amanaiâs body lingered on Satoruâs arms. The tantalizing scald of her blood painted his hands despite the cleanliness of his palms.
You knew what was running in his head when his arms clung to your waist with a desperate grip, nose pressed to the column of your neck.
âStay. Just until I fall asleep.â His voice cracks at the end.
âAlways, baby.â You murmur. He shifts his attention to the solace of your embrace; however, the nightmares outdo your comfort by a fraction.Â
He could break countless times because you would always be there to hold the pieces of him together.
In the morning, Satoru had a mission located in Nagoya. His bag was packed with breakfast you made earlier when the sun was too shy to show; extra clothes for his 3-day stay at the mission site; and all travel necessities one could ever think of.
He gives you a kiss on the cheek before he exits the Jujutsu High grounds. The kiss was cold, a thread between the two of you.
The tea you made for yourself last night remained filled to the mugâs rim and drained into the sink.
âDamnit,â The tears burned into the borders of your eyes. The shake in your shoulders was inconsiderate of your will.
Quiet sniffles paired with deep wheezes filled the dark dorm room.Â
A nightmare. The image of your friend, Haibara, was scorched into your mind, even if you didnât want it to. The lack of a smile on his pale face, blood drained out of the fatal wound on his abdomen.
He blamed you. His usual jovial smile forgone as the words spill from his lips,
âItâs all my fault.â The tears furiously roll down your cheeks. One hand gripped onto the empty side of your bed, looking for something familiar.
Maybe if you had been there instead of choosing the easier routeâa Grade 3 curse, you wouldnât have to miss Haibara right now. If you had been stronger, you couldâve taken the mission yourself.
With the back of your hand, you pathetically wiped the endless tears.Â
The shaky apologies blubbered from your throat, uselessly, âIâm sorry, Yu.â Your knees curled up to your aching chest.
Unconsciously, your blurry gaze turned to your right. The bed was empty beside you, except for your hand that gripped onto the sheet.
Right, Satoru was still busy in Nagoya.Â
The Strongest. His plate must have been fullâBeing the strongest yet unable to save both Riko and Haibara. Calling him now, at this hour, would add another layer to his tall stack of problems.
So you donât.Â
Time passes in a blur of cold water, thin sheets, and wounds around the skin of your nails; before you knew it, the darkness in the room had been washed out by the morning light.
âThe curse is classified to be a Grade 2 curse,â The assistant managerâIjichiâinforms you as he manoeuvres the vehicle you were in.
Nanami sat beside you, gaze trained to the whirring trees. There was a space between the two of you as you hugged each end of the passenger seats.Â
The space between you two that used to be occupied was still reserved.
âIs that classification for certain?â Nanamiâs voice is nothing but methodical.Â
The words hang heavy in the air, not settling rightâin fact, they nudged the wrong way as if an uncomfortable jab to the ribs.
Breaths were taut in Ijichiâs words as he affirmed, âYes. It has been thoroughly verified.âÂ
Nanamiâs frame remained stiff, rigid.Â
You found yourself checking your flip phone intermittently even if there were no pinging chimes from notificationsâand even more so when they did.
âHowâs the mission?â Sent 3 hours ago.
The breaks in between Satoruâs messages to you were periods of restless waiting, a constant push-and-pull of wanting to do something but also not at all.Â
Every time, you ended up on the torturous decision of waiting for his message that sometimes never came at all.
Too absorbed into scanning your empty inbox, you hadnât realized the car had come to a stop until Nanami opened the door on your side of the car.
âWeâre here.â He simply announces. His growing pale blonde hair swept to one side.
You quickly stuff the device into your pocket, the twin to the keychain on Satoruâs phone jangling. âRight. Sorry.âÂ
âHowâs the mission?â Sent 9 hours ago.
As you stared at the glowing screen of the flip phone, you wondered if it was too much if you sent another message. It was well within your rights to worry about him, right?
Your fingers type out a message faster than you expected. Brief and just enough to show your concernâthe last thing you wanted was to be an annoying girlfriend that only added to his problems.Â
âAre you doing okay? I havenât heard from you since yesterday afternoon.â Sent.
The reply came an hour later.
âSorry sweets. Tired of chasing people for clues here. I have to extend my stay for another 2 days. Iâll make it up to you when I get back <3âÂ
If you werenât brought down by the fact that heâd be away for longer than you expected, you could have pictured the sweetness of his voice in between the lines.Â
âStay safe. Love you, Toru.â
Cloaked by the shadows of the room, you folded the phone in half and set it down next to your pillow.Â
The darkness only emphasized the cold. You didnât want to sleep tonight. Despite the exhaustion that weighed on your bones, it wasnât enough to counter the fear.
For what felt like the nth time for the past weeks, you couldnât and didnât.
Itâll be okay, you consoled yourself, because youâll be back to normal soon.
This is normal.
âSatoruâs in Osaka?â You echoed in surprise.
Shoko nods, cigarette in between her fingersâthe third one of the day, you noticed. It was barely noon.
âYeah,â She sighs, a puff of white smoke curling into the wind. She leans onto the wall behind her, âHe told me yesterday.âÂ
You nodded, unsure why your heart churned in your chest, âThen, what about his mission in Nagoya?âÂ
âThat? He finished that days ago.âÂ
The ground felt unsteady, feet shifting against it.Â
Why didnât heâyou didnât let the thought finish. You shouldnât demand from a man stripped of stability.
âThe cases of curses are rising in the Kansai region afterall,â Shoko lifts her cigarette to her lips, âBut I worry heâs burning himself too much.â
Her eyes slide to yours, dark eyebagsâalmost purpleâsagging the skin under her lashes. The fatigue that ages her countenance tells you that she doesnât have much of the capacity to look after others anymore.
âTake care of him, alright?â Shoko says.
You should take care of himâeveryone knew he had it the hardest. He needed you now more than ever, if anything, this was when you should be the most selfless, to be there for everyone at the cost of yourself.
A smile that felt wrong appeared on your face.
âOf course.â
The lack of sleep slowly caught up to youâfirst, it was the headaches; then it was the endless weariness; then, the dull ache in your chest that never really went away.
Shoko and Nanami were less and less involved in your schedule as the days passed onâyou weren't sure if it was them or you who had detached.
You didnât have time to process it because Satoru was finally returning to Jujutsu High, to you.
Rounding the corner of the building, you noticed a pile of boxes by a door.Â
âNanami?â You called out, slowly approaching him, curious despite the thrum in your head.
He turns at your presence, eyes devoid of any life. He murmurs your name in acknowledgement before looking back at the boxes.
As you found your spot beside him, your feet suddenly sunk into the ground.
Haibaraâs dorm.Â
It was being cleared out.Â
Your eyes darted to the boxes, flaps still open. Some boxes had his clothesât-shirts he won at timed challenges for the most rice eaten in one sitting; some had small trinkets from his sister.
All were evidence that there had once been a boy called Haibara Yu.
And now, it was being cleared out like it was merely junk.
To be thrown out. To be forgotten.
You spent so much time in this room with Nanami and Yu that you practically memorized where things were.
The only thing that brought you back to reality was the stinging pain on your palms from digging your nails into them.
One day, this room will be occupied. And that student won't ever know who used to be thereâwho used to sprawl on that bed in snores, why the wooden desk was shattered on the edges and why there were three cup stains on the surface.
Your feet moved unconsciously, turning your heel and walking away without turning back.
Satoru newly climbed the stairs by the gates when your legs took you there.Â
Your throat tightened. The persistent squeeze of your heart acutely present.
âSatoru.â Nevertheless, a tight smile stretched across your lips like you were trying to hold your face together.
âSweetheart.â He smiles, though it never quite reaches his eyes.
The natural pull between the two of you led to a soft embrace. But the way your heart twisted made his hug feel alien.
âLet me put my bag in my room then we can have lunch, alright?â He muses, pressing a kiss to your temple that barely registers in your head.
You nodded, watching as he picked up his bag and walked away from you.
It is when he moves further into the premises and leaves you by the gates that you find yourself blinking to keep the tears at bay.
Satoru brings you to a comfortable diner, a little deserted but relaxing.Â
You enter the small space a step behind him. Together, you sit at a booth across from each other.
The menu had words lined up top to bottom of the pageâthough you wouldn't know what they said because you weren't reading.
Your brain was too focused on holding onto that thread of composure.
The Jujutsu High students used to frequent this place. Yu and Geto used to come here tooâbefore Geto started detaching himself and before YuâŚ
The booth was too cold. Too big.
âWhat do you want, sweetheart?âÂ
You whipped your chin up, locking eyes with Satoru over the menu. You hadn't realized the server was already there, awaiting your order.
You cleared your throat, âI-Iâll have what you're having, Satoru.âÂ
âThen, make it two.â He flashes his charming smile.
A tightness twisted in your chest.Â
The server repeats the order once and she goes off to the kitchen, leaving you and Satoru.
You downed the glass of water in front of you in an attempt to swallow the burn in your throat.
âHow was your mission in Nagoya?â A sad attempt to initiate conversation.
Luckily, Satoru didn't seem to notice it. He lazily sprawls all over the cushions across yours, âIt was so-so. Managed to get it done quickly.â
Despite his cheery appearance, there was something off about him. Something hollow.
But you didn't comment on it, fingers fidgeting on the sleeve of your uniform.
âAs expected of Gojo Satoru.â Was all you could say.
Before conversation could continue, chimes accompanied by vibrations sounded from Satoruâs pocket.
He fishes out his buzzing flip phone. Something flickers on his expressionâyou managed to notice.
âIâll be back. It's Yaga.â He says, promptly standing up and answering the phone on the way to the door.
It was as if you were on autopilot, eyes staring into nothing.Â
Thankfully, the food arrived quickly. Two bowls of rice with meat slid onto the table as you waited for Satoru.Â
The jingle of the door announces his return. He scoots into the seat in front of you again, âThis looks good! Just as I thought, nothing really beats Tokyo meat~â He muses.
âBut then again, nothing beats the Miso in Nagoyaââ He starts to ramble but they drift from one ear to the other.
Every now and then, you throw in a,Â
âIs that so?â
âThat's true.âÂ
âYou're right.â
You slowly eat the food in front of you though it tasted like sandpaper in your mouth.
âI have another mission tonight.â Satoru suddenly says. It makes you look up from your meal.
âWhere?â You ask.
âNara. I'll be there for 3 days.â He answers. A whole 4 hours away.
âYou just got back from Nagoya.â Osakaâa petty part of you wanted to say but opted not to.
His elbows are on the table, looking at you with something a little less than a wince, âI know. But it's Yagaâs orders. I'll wrap it up quickly so I can get back faster.â
Satoru, please say something to stop the pain that ate away in your heart. You wanted to plead.
But your plea comes in a subtle way.
âBe safe, alright? Don't burn yourself out.âÂ
He leaves that night again. You packed him fresh sets of clothes, snacks for his nightly travels, and a note.
âYou don't owe anyone your life. I love you.â
If Satoru had the Six Eyes, you had something far greater. The ability to see the person hiding in his shellâthe way he laughed a little too loud at lame jokes, the way he stared at nothing.Â
Maybe this one little note could make his days easier. You knew what it was like to need someone.
Carefully, the bag was zipped up and handed to Satoru. Like usual, he gives you a goodbye kiss and a promise to return quicker than expected.
And like usual, the emptiness of your room ate away at you.
The weeks that passed were a big blur to you, running on a state of numbness.
The mundane routine cycled itself: You wake up with a heaviness in your eyes, you get ready for missions, you do the missions, then you wash and try to sleep. Eat in between if you remember.
The halls felt less welcoming with each dayâcolder, even. Somehow, there was less life on the campus or maybe it was just you who felt it.
You'd find the others occasionally cheering and chatting in the open field while you retreated to your room.Â
Was it just you who felt the space?
âDamnit!â A particularly deep gash behind your thigh had you limping back to the company car.Â
The Grade 3 Curse managed to dig its sharp claws into your leg after a sloppy attack with your cursed technique. The fight was messier than it should have been and longer than usual.Â
How could you let a Grade 3 Curse even touch you like this?
The assistant manager that accompanied you on this mission exclaimed your name once she spotted your limping form. She quickly ran towards you, slinging your arm over her shoulder in a supportive stance.
âI'll call Shoko-san immediately.â
âNoâno, no. Don't tell anyone. We'll go to a hospital.â You insisted with a hiss.
The searing pain that crawled up from your thigh almost made you reconsider but you couldn't risk Satoru knowing about this.Â
You knew this would only break him even more. Naivety didn't hold you tightly enough to make you think you held no importance to Satoru.
âButââ The young assistant manager tried to resist.
âNo. We're going to a hospital and no one hears about this.â
It takes a minute for her to decide, lips pursed into a thin line as her eyes search if you were truly serious. With a hesitant nod, she holds in her sigh and helps you into the car.Â
She opens the trunk of the vehicle and returns with a thick blue towel.Â
âHere. Put pressure until we get there.â She presses the cloth against your wound, prompting an audible wince from you at the contact.Â
âAnd don't pass out! If you do, I'm taking you to Shoko-san immediately.â The poor assistant manager looked frightened out of her wits.
You nodded, holding the blue towel that began to collect your blood.
When you returned to Jujutsu High, there were stitches sewed into the meat of your thigh, thick gauze atop it, and a visible limp in your step.
Thankfully, you didn't run into anyone during your slow retreat to your roomâa small reprieve from the endless hassles you seemed to face.
You flop down onto the bed, careful to lay on your side so as to not irritate the new addition on your body. Utterly defeated by today, you had no appetite or energy.
It has become a habit: before you knew it, your flip phone was already in your hand, browsing through your inbox.
Like what usually happens, there's nothing. The last message in the digital chat with Satoru was always yours.
With a sigh, you drop your phone onto the bed. The bright lights in the room burned through your closed eyelidsâbut you couldn't sleep without them anymore.
Tomorrow will be better.
Geto Suguru defected from Jujutsu High.
You couldnât find Satoru when the official sentence had been released.
âIn accordance to Article 9 of Jujutsu Regulations, he is subject to execution as a Curse User.â
An air of heaviness pulverized over the Jujutsu High premises. Searching high and low from morning to afternoon, you werenât able to spot Satoruânot even a trace of him.
Your legs moved despite the punishing agony that shot up from your thigh. Eventually, you stayed with Shoko, offering your quiet presence without forcing conversation.
Geto Suguru, the mellow and composed senior that often strolled with his hands in his pocket, had killed 112 people?Â
The numbness was replaced with shock, another disengaging feeling that hauled you away from the reality you were already losing touch with.
Satoru returns in the evening.Â
The jokes and dented smirks that he made his armor was no rival to real vulnerability. He moved like a corpse possessed, arms that didnât feel like his and legs that felt as if theyâd buckle any moment.
He finds you waiting by the oak door of his room.
The way your eyes lit up in worry nearly sent his legs to succumb to the weight. You pushed yourself off the doorframe, âSatoru.â
His arms ached, as if dying to feel your warmth against him. You were already wearing your pajamasâlong flowy pants and a shirt too big. Probably his.
âI got you your favoââ
âNot right now, sweetheart.â
You recoiled, stopping a few steps away from him.
Of course, he had just lost his best friendâthe friend you knew that was attached to his hip the moment you met them. Where Satoruâs name was, Suguruâs was there.
The cautious expression on your face softened, your hands swung behind you.Â
âIf you want to talk about it, Iâm juââ
âSweetheart, please. I need to be alone and you're not helping.â
There were storms ravaging in the blue of his eyes, turmoil in every pull and crash of the tide. His shoulders were awfully slack yet the tense shakes of his fingers told you everything you knew.
He was a man unraveling in front of you.
You shrunk in front of him, a nail slipping down on the skin of your fingertips too fast and too harsh behind you.
Suddenly, you were no more than a child under the scrutinizing gaze of your father. A lump formed in your throat, ready to jump at any moment.
What he gave you now was certaintyâcertainty in that he did not need you. If anything, your presence was one to tolerate. What he needed was quiet, you gave him loud; what he needed was a step back, you gave him the spotlight.
Perhaps it showed on your face; perhaps it didnât. Satoruâs expression did not change.
Indifferent.Â
âGood night, Satoru.â You murmured, exerting most of your force in keeping your voice steady.
He enters his dorm room and shuts it with a click. Not a slam. A gentle click.
âI love you.â
Maybe you would have preferred a slam, because then heâd have a reason not to hear the three words that left your lips.
When Satoru entered his room, it was spotless. Bedsheets changed, wafting the lavender scent of detergent, his blanket folded neatly on the bed, and his floor wiped clean.
The distinct scent of you ghosted under his nose.
His arms wanted to reach out for you, his chest wanted to burst with emotions right in front of you. But he couldnât.
He wouldnât because he didnât want you to see him like this, like a thread coming undone from what used to be a solid front. Reliable was what he was supposed to be; not this broken state.Â
His day was compressed into a mess of events he hardly remembered.
A weapon who failed again and againâin the name of protecting what he loved, he wasnât there when it mattered.
The familiar darkness of your room felt like an embrace, a void that sucked you in without mercy.
Your feet expertly navigate the floor, stepping over takeout cartons and dodging unwashed uniforms. The shadows that haunted the four corners of your tiny room seemed to cave in more and more each day, determined to reach you.
The bed was a tempting deception. The sheets felt rough yet silky, dust collected at the folded lines of a bed that hadnât been made in weeks.
Still, you sit in your messes.
The warmth on your calf had been bugging you. With the guidance of the moonlight from the crack in the curtains, you noticed the spreading wet patch on your pants.Â
Peeling them down, the crimson shone like wine under a chandelier with the moon. The thin threads that held your separated skin together had severed, allowing the burgundy waterfalls to stream down your leg.Â
The sigh that built up pressure in your lungs couldnât escape. Instead, the tears rolled down your cheeks in hot rivers.Â
With a blurry vision, you slowly reached for the gauze and pressed it against the gash. You wrapped bandages around your thigh, holding it in place, sucking in your teeth from the stings.
Should you tell Shoko?Â
Then you remembered: the last time you saw Shoko, she barely spokeâthe vestiges of her life clung to the remaining people in her life.
So no.
Maybe youâll go to a hospital in the morning.
Satoru, from birth, was keenly aware of his potentialâespecially when the fact of it was shoved down his throat. His life was naught if not for the responsibility destined on his shoulders.
He was untouchable, a god who walked among the best.
He realized this. Yet he selfishly wanted to be with you.Â
With RCT, he rose to the pinnacle of his capabilities. The obstacles that scarred him were nothing but fuel to his hungry soul.Â
His undoing was not Riko, not Toji, not even Suguru.Â
But you.
âWhere is Shoko?â Satoru stormed into Yagaâs personal domain. The boyâs hurried footsteps echoed in the generous hall.
Uncharacteristically, Yaga was not sewing, merely staring at nothing with folded arms.Â
The principal lifts his gaze to the panting white-haired sorcerer, âShoko is heading to Kyoto at this very moment.â His voice is rough, but not unkind.
âWhat is it that you urgently require herââ
Satoru does not give another word before turning his heel and raging down the hall, seemingly disordered.Â
The gears in Satoruâs head refuse to turn, because if they did, heâd realize the mistakes he failed to notice. He enters your room, knocking over cans and stepping on your laundry.Â
âBaby,â His whispers cracked, far from reassuring. âIâm taking you to a hospital, okay?âÂ
His calloused fingertips ran along your cheeks briefly. Cold.
âLean into me, sweetheart.â Satoruâs hand slipped under your knees, the other cradled your back. Maybe you would have felt the prick of his chilly skin had it not been for the burning fever.
Satoruâs eyes shook as he took in the warmth that coated his fingers, the dried blood smeared all over one leg, the burgundy stains on the used bandages and sheets.
Your head lolled on his shoulder, far too limp for his liking. Shallow, trembling gasps fanned his neck, too warm against the cool skin.
âDonât worry, sweetheart,â His voice is strained as his legs move.Â
The darkness of your room becomes irrelevant as he steps into the sunlit hall that seemed to mock him.
âYouâll be just fine,â His heart is in his ears.
The lack of a response sends his soul into a panic, âTalk to me, baby.â He begs.
He steals a glance at you for a moment, to check. Your skin was pale as if all your blood had been left behind in week-old sheets and curled strings of bandages.
He didnât know how long you had been in this state. He didnât check in on you until Nanami mentioned he hadn't seen you for a week.Â
He should've.
âBaby,â He lightly shakes you, âSay something.â
Satoruâs eyes tremble in fearâin real fear.
âY/N, please.â
Then he hears the one thing his heart lives for.
â...Toru.â There. Faint and quiet but there.Â
âYes, baby,â He affirms, shakily. The sleek black company car he had called earlier rapidly comes into view. âKeep those pretty eyes open for me.â
He looks down at you, âWhen you recover, you can tell me all about how big of an asshole I am, alright?â
Satoru sat beside your hospital bed, soaked in your blood.Â
The machine rhythmically beeped, a sound that would forever haunt him.
The doctor said the deep wound on your thigh had gotten infected. Satoru didnât even know you were injured until it was almost too late.
He didnât even know where or how you got hurt. You didnât tell hiâNo, he never asked.
He bows his head low, arms braced on your hospital bed as his eyes shook with exhaustion.Â
You cleaned his dorm room with that horrible injury for him? And he couldnât even utter the three words back to you. The thoughts were recalcitrant behind his eyes, rumbling in a fierce guilt.
Fear and love were both foreign feelings to the Strongest.Â
The image of you lying in a hospital bed, an accumulation of his small mistakes proved the existence of the two emotions.
He knew love was real when it terrified him.
A terrible ache dawdled on every inch of your body, particularly concentrated behind your thigh. The sting pulsed irregularly and at different hostilitiesâdespite their ill will, it was enough to rouse you from a sluggish sleep.
Your eyes peeled open, heavy and swollen.Â
âSweetheart.â The voice brushed against your skin softly, familiar and tender.
You turn slightly, minding the ache in your lower half. A disfigured blob of white hair appears in your blurry vision.
But you knew, hazy or not.
âSatoru.â You called out, the word struggling.
âYouâre awake.â He murmurs over the sound of beeping, âHow are you feeling?â
âIâm fine.â You answer, you watch the skin folding in between his brows in real time.
He leans in closer, âBe honest, my love. None of that.â
The hesitation climbs up your throat but sincerity is quicker.Â
âLike shit.â
A soft smile breaks across his face, âThatâs my girl.âÂ
You manage a small chuckle. His hand is a comfort against yoursâyour hand is warm while the rest of your body is hollow and cold.
âYou had me worried, sweetheart.â He admits, elbows on the bed. He drops his forehead against your intertwined hands.
His voice is throaty as he says, âI havenât been scared like that before.âÂ
âDonât do that again,â He murmurs, heart spilling before you, âI donât think I can take it.â
With your other free hand, you placed it on the crown of his head. His blue eyes peak over where your fingers connect, locking with yours.
There was a deep vulnerability in them, a sincerity that only came from a man utterly hagridden. The cobalt in them torrid with desperation.
âIâm sorry I didnât tell you, Toru.â You murmured, âThoughtâ I could handle it by myself.â
He presses a kiss against your knuckles.Â
He murmurs against the skin, âTell me everything next time.â
âI want to know how your days go. Donât care what it is, I want to know.â He confesses, âIf you exorcise a special grade, I want to know how you did it. Even if you just stub your toe, I still want to know.â
âIf you ever feel like you need me, Iâll be there for you.â He places a kiss on your fingers, then on your palm, then on your wrist. âIn a heartbeat.â
The tears did not register in your head until you saw his expression softening impossibly. His eyes turn gentle and the smile on his lips is fond.
The snivels racked your body, weeks of holding it in flooding out in one expression of relief. The tears roll down your cheeks, chest rising and falling in hiccuping motions.
Satoru releases your joined hands before slowly climbing into the hospital bed. With difficulty due to his large frame, he squeezes into the space beside you.
Instinctively, you curl into him. One arm becomes your pillow while the other trails up and down your back in a soothing pattern.
âSatoru, this bed isnât made for cuddling,â You laughed wetly, âWe shouldnât be doing this.â
He presses a tender kiss on your forehead before grinning boyishly down at you.
âWhen has that stopped us?â He holds you even closer.
His nose is buried into your hair and he allows you to rub your tear-stained cheeks into his chest.
âIâm sorry, sweetheart.â He whispers, âIâve neglected you without realizing it.â
âI'm sorry for what I said that night. I was just overwhelmed. You help me in more ways than one.â
âIâll do better. Iâll be better for you, sweetheart. I promise you.â He continues, a covenant resting in between his words.
You nod against his chest, sniffling. The warmth of his words mends the nagging affliction that found roots within you, replaced by something deeply like himâhope.
âI love you, Toru.â You tilted your head up, resting your chin on him.
He holds the back of your head like youâre delicate, worth more than life itself.
The wonder in his eyes are epistles of adoration, âI love you too, sweetheart.â
âMore than anything.â He nuzzles his nose against yours, eliciting tired giggles from you.
The first week after being discharged from the hospital, things were back to the days before Riko Amanai. As promised, Satoru took up less missions.Â
What used to be on hold were back running: Silly dates, random sneak-attacks and chases that ended in cuddles, and the sacred ritual of ice cream afternoon runs.
But there was something about Satoru that you couldn't quite reach. Time would heal all, you chose to believe.
The spark of flame burned passionately for days.
But like all flames, there came days where they flickered and dwindled.
âSweetheart, they need me in Kanazawa. Iâll be back in two days.â He told you, guilt underlying the words.Â
You turned to him from your spot beside him, ignoring the way your mood fell. You think this was too familiar.
Like a blind believer, you hoped.
âSatoru, you donât need to feel guilty about going on missions.â You laughed lightly, an attempt to exorcise the ugly feeling in his words.Â
âYouâre too kind,â He kisses your temple, âIâll finish it quickly and get back to you as soon as I can.â
Too familiar. You watched his back like a movie replayingâa part of you prepared for the fall, the sharp dagger to your gut.
Satoru had his eyes set on a world that did not limit itself to you, but to you, you looked at him like he was yours. Each day without him, a piece of you died, wasting away.Â
While you were there for him, who was there for you?Â
You knew dating him wasnât without challengeâyou knew that there were burdens far beyond your understanding. You thought you were ready to bear the load with him, that with him, nothing was impossible.
WIth each moment he spent away from you, there came a reminder. You were weakâSatoru would rather hide his problems because he knew you couldnât take it; Satoru didnât see you as reliable, he saw you as a liability.
You were another burden to him and like an idiot, you gave him obligations, more responsibilities past your station. You were weak, you were never dependable. It was for these same reasons that Haibara died.
Sleep escaped you more than youâd like to admit and your smiles were ironed out with each day you were left to be a victim of your mind.Â
One 2-day mission extended into a 3-day one; 3-day missions turned into 5 days; and 5 days turned into 7. Before you knew it, Satoru was gone more than he was with you.
Suguru was still at large, forming some kind of cult you didnât quite understand. It was obvious that the rising tensions in the Jujutsu society were because of him. Satoru carried the weight of the world.
Couples always proclaimed about the hard patch of a relationship, that period of constant push-and-pull. Perhaps, thatâs the label this interval had.
A tug of war.
With your anniversary nearing, you cleared your schedule for the exciting date.Â
All you needed was a reminder in the midst of mundane days. You always believed that you and Satoru could connect like nothing changed even after a spell of absence.Â
Maybe it was desperation, maybe it was hopeâyou couldnât tell. Itâll be better. You only needed a reminder to rekindle that flame.
âIâm heading to the restaurant, Toru! Iâll see you there.â The chime of the message being sent vibrated onto your fingers.
You smiled down at the screen, butterflies fluttered in wandering loops inside your stomach.
Donning a navy blue dress, the excess effort proudly displayed itself in your appearance: a new style of makeup, and hair done in the way that youâve always wanted to try. A necklace hugged your neck, heavy with meaning.
A small way of making you feel like yourself again.
The restaurant was straight out of a romance movie. A classic luxury restaurant in the heart of Tokyo that made you smooth your dress intermittently.Â
Satoru said he made a reservation and to dress nicely but you didnât expect this.
With the help of the hospitable staff and without the help of your apparent shyness, the reserved table came into view.Â
Amidst the hushed chatter and clinks of metal, a table for two sat, overlooking the cityscape of Tokyo. The wine glasses beautifully reflected the incandescent light of the candles on the table, a color of loveâgolden.
You sat down, cheeks aching from the smile you wore. You accompanied the ripened laughs and clinks of intimate toasts between lovers and families with an awkward gulp and wide, excited eyes.
The table cloth was nice to the feel as you ran your palms along it.
7:32 pm. Heâll be here soon.
âGood evening, miss. Would you like to order?â A kind server in a neat uniform approached you, a notebook and pen in hand.
You flashed a polite smileâfar too youthful and vibrantâto the gracious server, âI-Iâm waiting for someone. Heâll be here soon.â
The server nods with a smile and strolls to another table.
You checked your beat-up flipphone again. Thereâs a message from Satoru.
âSomething came up with the mission, baby! Iâm wrapping it up now <333 !âÂ
7:57 pm. Thereâs a stupid cheshire smile on your face.
The pair of lovers on the table beside yours get up to leave. Her purse is slung on his shoulder as they walk to the exit with smiles drowning in love.
You nibble on your lip, tapping your foot beneath the table.Â
8:14 pm. Tokyo traffic is no joke afterall.
Your glass of water has been refilled four times and three different servers have approached you to take your order, you counted.
The keychain on your flip phone feels oddly taunting, your eyes burning holes into the white bunny.
8:33 pm. Itâs been an hour.
Youâve been late hours after a fixed meetup time before. This was the exact same thing, only that you were the waiting party.
Your hands reach over to adjust the positions of the utensils on Satoruâs side for the nth time.
Heâll be here soon.
âGood evening, miss,â A serverâfrom earlier, you recognizeânears you. He stands in front of your table with a remorseful expression, âI apologize for bothering you, miss. I would like to inform you that we have a restaurant policy that customers must order to prevent loitering and free up space for walk-in guests.â
You shot up in your seat, âO-Oh, is that soâŚâ You quickly pick up the menu.
The numbers on the handheld board had the potential to drain your bank account dryâright after you recently paid for your motherâs trip abroad.Â
You immediately point to the cheapest option, knowing exactly where it was on the page. âThis, please.â
It was a slice of cake though it barely looked like one. More like half a slice of cake. The server jots it down and nods, promptly retreating to fetch your order.
A deep sigh eased from your tense lungs. Your attention returns to the empty inbox of your device.
You reread his message for what felt like the millionth time.
9:05 pm.Â
The cake tastes like shit.Â
Too much of everything and lacking everything all at once.
Just as you thought, it was ostentatious with its gold leaves and dried chocolate lines on the plate. The ceramic took up more space than the cake did.Â
At least it took your mind off Satoru, even if it were only a couple minutes.
The chatter of other guests have become quieter as the conversation reduced into romantic whispers that belonged only to their spheres.Â
As you pushed a too-hard strawberry across the plate, you could hear the phantom voice of Satoru complaining about the cake.
9:49 pm. Your heart begged Satoru to prove you wrong.
Before the last table could leave, you decided to save what little of your dignity was left and exited the establishment. You gave a brief, quiet thanksâin a pathetic attempt to hold in your sadnessâto the valet.
The serversâ and staffâs gazes were piercing hot against you, like stabs to the violent tears that threatened to burst.Â
They must have seen you waiting all night at the table. They must have thought how pitiful you were, hoping for a man that never showed his face until the restaurant closed.
The place was already far above yourself. They already probably thought you didn't belong.Â
Embarrassment lingered within you but it was no rival to the heavy hurt that roped your spine.
The cold that bit your skin as you walked down the streets of Tokyo was a slap to your face.
What a fool you were.Â
âSatoru? Is the mission holding you up?â 8:21 pm.
âDonât worry, Iâll be here when youâre done!â 8:46 pm.
âYou still coming, baby?â 9:01 pm.
âTheir cake tastes bad.â 9:53 pm.Â
âIâm going home.â 10:41 pm.Â
Tears collect in the pockets of your lids but you stubbornly donât let them fall. You hug yourself tighter.
Jujutsu High seemed like a hostile place to return to, because Satoru would be there.
A sudden wet, chilly droplet falls onto your hand. Then another on your nose, then more of its siblings on your head. The clicks of your heels on the pavement stopped as you held out your hand.
Passersby quickly clear the streets at the tease of rain. A woman rushes past you with her bag on her head.Â
âJust great.â You cursed through an exasperated gaspâalmost laughâas the droplets rapidly increased in frequency.Â
You hailed the nearest taxi before the rain could sour your dispirited soul.
The yellow vehicle drops you off at your childhood home. Luckily, your mom still keeps the key under the potted plant in the windowsill.Â
The key turns and permits entrance into the house you grew up in. The lights were closed and the shadows that stretched along the walls were accompanied by the muffled splashes of rain outside.
Right, your mom was still abroad. Maybe you were glad for that much.Â
Your chest tightened, teetering on the edge of breakingâbut you donât let it. A short intake of breath follows your trembling lip.
The space felt too small as if someone held your head down in a full well. Suffocated, you barely process the fact that you kicked your heels off and trudged into your room.Â
Your phone had been blowing up since the taxi rideâthough the chimes were pointless now.
The obsolete vanity in your room, you noticed, wasnât thrown out.
The old stool complained as you sat down. The young woman who stared at you was unrecognizable. Tears collecting at the rimsâand the natural pinkish joy in your cheeks was replaced by artificial powder.
Who was she?
The pressure in your lungs crushed your windpipe.
The door swings open, the sound of the heavy rainfall and Satoruâs heaves bleeding into the room.
The white-haired man spots your back, facing him, as you sit in front of your vanity. From his angle, he canât see your reflection in the mirror, sending his heart to thump faster.
âIâm sorry, sweetheart.â Satoru rushes in deep breaths, quickly stripping his coat and dropping it onto a nearby chair, âI didnât meanâI shouldnât haveââ
âI have no excuses. Iâm so sorry, sweets,â He rambles, trying to close the spot between the two of you.
You donât give him the satisfaction of a response. You only unclasp the necklace around your neck.
âIâm sorry, baby,â He breathes, âAre you mad?â
He steps beside you, finally seeing your unmoving expression.Â
âIf youâre mad, you can yell at me. You can even hit me! As much as you want.â He insists. If you didnât move in time, Satoru might have grabbed your hand.Â
You stood up, heading to your closet to change out of the suffocating navy blue dress.Â
âBaby, please.â He pleads, hands landing on your shoulders.
You pause. The corners of your eyes burned and the tears you spent all evening stopping flooded down your cheeks.
âHey, Hey, Heyââ Satoru murmurs, soft and ridden with guilt. Your legs beneath your knees grow weak and you slowly crouch onto the ground.Â
Satoru quickly moves in front of you and drops down to your level, hands on your shoulders.
âBaby,â He tries to brush the tears away but you donât let him, âSweets, donât cry.â He shushes in lulling tones.
Your throat burns with salty tears as you gasp and the broken feeling in your chest feels like glass puncturing your lungs.Â
âBabyââ
âIâm so tired, Satoru,â Your voice breaks at the end, âIâm so so fucking tired.â
Satoru froze, brows stitched together in belated guilt. Itâs as if it hurts him to watch you cry.
âIâm tired of waiting for a sign. Iâm tired of waiting for you to come back only for you to go away the second you do.â
âIâm tired of pretending like tomorrowâs going to get better when time and time again, it doesnât.â
Your words feel like poison on your tongue, cracking and painfully honest, âIâm tired of feeling so alone,âÂ
âYouâre there, Nanamiâs there, Shokoâs there, Iâm surrounded by people all the time,â You sniffle, âBut I donât know why I still feel so alone.â Your voice shatters.
Satoru's face is scrunched in pity, the skin around his eyes turning red.
You lifted your gaze to him, cheeks glistening with tears, âI trusted you that we could pull through this, Satoru.â
âAnd now Iâm beginning to think that was a mistake.â You hiccuped.
Your lover seems as if someone ripped his heart out from him. The maturity on his face crashes into pure emotion.
The tears kept falling, âIâm tired of waiting for your promises to come true.â
âIâm tired of being an afterthought. Being there for everyone without getting the same back. Iâm tired of being your fool.â
âGive myself back to me, Satoru.â You cried hoarsely with your hands on your face, like youâve lost something so dear.
Satoruâs hands ball into fists beside his thighs. His head looks down at you, hurt rooted deep in the cerulean blue as if he canât believe he did this to you.
There was a brief pause, merely filled by your sniffles and cries.
âDo you regret this?â He whispers.
âIâm sorry, Satoru.â You say in broken words.
âDo you want to end this, Y/N?â He asks, as steady as he could be though his eyes betray him.
The lump in his throat bobs. âDo you want me to go?â He asks, voice cracking.
The pause stretches, seemingly infinite until slowly, you make small nods, shaky.
âJust go. Leave! Just leave.â
But what you really meant was Stay. Please stay. Choose to stay.
Your eyes fell to the ground, waiting for him to wrap his arms around you, to fight for you.
His hands linger on your shoulders, hesitant, before pulling away. He stands up and his shoes disappear from your line of sight. His footsteps echo and merge with the hiss of rain outside.
The door closes gently, too gently. The quietness floods in, settling deep and heavy with uncomfortable clarity.
Tears fall onto the back of your hands as your knees land onto the floor. The silence seemed to mock you.Â
Your eyes dart to the door, blurry and desperate. âToru?â
Itâs closed shut, his coat is still on the chair. When the room falls too quiet and the four walls close in on you, you rose and ran for the door.
The street was dark with only streetlights flickering in the space. The rain on the ground splashes onto your legs, drenching your dress. Hair stuck to your face and the cold breeze from running nipped at your skin.Â
You searched, turning left and right, breathless. The tears mixed with the rain as you ran.Â
âSatoru!â The crash of the rain hid the calls of his name.
You wanted to tell him you took it all back. You would give him a chance if he stayed.
âSatoru!â You cried.
That you still loved him.Â
But he was gone.
And you were alone, running in the midst of mourning the finality.
Shoko sat beside Satoru, his eyes trained on nothing.
âY/Nâs been declared AWOL.â Shoko murmurs, a forgotten cigarette rests in between her fingers. The bags under her eyes were heavier than usual.
Satoruâs gaze was unfocused, hands laced loosely as he rested his elbows on his knees.
Shoko continues, âYouâre an idiot, Satoru.â
âI know.â
âThe biggest one. The worst kind.â
âI know.â
Silence idles in sore resolution. The smoke fizzles from the cigarette, wafting towards Satoru. But the man doesnât move.
Shoko sighs lightly. Her limbs move in languid motions as she stands.
Her eyes are focused on something far in the distance. âIf you see her again, donât even bother.â She says with one hand in her pocket.
The gravel crunches under Shokoâs weight, moving further from Satoru.
He doesnât move. Not an inch.
His coat is still in your house.Â
Satoru left when you told him to because he believed that he was the one hurting you. He caused you to cry and he was the one who neglected you promise after promise.
If giving you peace meant removing himself from your narrative, Satoru would gladly spend the rest of his life repenting with the punishment of your bruising memory.
You deserved someone who didnât have his problems; someone who could fulfill promises, someone who didnât have the weight of the world on his shoulders. He shouldnât be selfish now, he canât chase you after all the wrong heâs done to you.
As his final act of love, Satoru lets you go.Â
Satoru met you when he wasnât looking for love and lost you when he loved you the most.
11 years later.
The society of sorcerers remained at a steady, relative peace. The number of curses fluctuated across different seasons and new batches of sorcerers graduated and entered.
Peace was shattered when Sukunaâs vessel had been found.
âGojo-sensei!â
âSensei!â
Satoru grew from an immature teenager into a reliable teacher. The wild youth on his face had succumbed to the mature serenity he now carried.
âGojo-sensei, have you ever been in love?â Yuji asks, the light of the TV flashing across his face. One of Yagaâs dolls, Tsukamoto, sleeps peacefully in the boyâs arms.
The movie plays a dramatic scene of a girl running to the love of her life, suspenseful music bouncing off the walls in the tiny basement.
Gojo sits beside Yuji, one long leg crossed over the other. The boy canât tell if his teacher is thinking or reminiscing, the blindfold obscures much of his thoughts.
âOnce.â The now 28 year old sorcerer answers in a lazy drawl.
Yujiâs face lights up. His chest turns to Gojo, curiosity swimming in his wide eyes. The movie becomes nothing but background music.
âReally?! Where is she now? Is she still iââ
Pow! Tsukamoto lands a harsh upper cut on Yujiâs jaw, sending the boy slacking against the couch.Â
Gojo manages a small chuckle, âYou have to focus if you donât want Tsukamoto doing that again.â
Yuji grumbles a gruff âI got it.â while rubbing the growing soreness on his jaw. He turns back to the movie as Tsukamoto flops back onto his lap.Â
Love? Gojo thought. There was only one person who came to mind.
âSeriously?!â Nobara exclaims, hands braced on the arms of the chair she was on.
Megumi, as usual, doesnât look surprised.Â
Yuji nods fervently, âGojo-sensei told me himself!â
âWell, we obviously have to find her!â Nobara trudges towards Yuji, a woman on a mission. She flops down onto the couch beside him.Â
Whipping out her phone, she begins by searching through her teachersâ social media platformsâif there were any. Yuji peeks over her shoulder, watching and observing her quick fingers.
âHey, Fushiguro, do you know anything?â Nobara asks, gaze trained on the screen of her phone.
Megumi answers in a flat tone, âShoko-san definitely knows about it. From what I overheard, she was Nanami-sanâs classmate.â
âNanamin?!â Yuji exclaims, surprised.
âThat makes it a whole lot easier!â Nobara tries to search up their names.
The 20-minute online investigation was, in fact, not easy. The trio forgot one crucial factor: none of their teachers had social media accounts because Jujutsu society was highly secretive.
Except for Gojo, of course, who didn't know what a threat was. He had every social media account he possibly couldâsometimes, he'd even instruct them to like his new tiktoks.Â
But even then, their teacher didn't follow anyone aside from his alt accounts.Â
âOf course, you guys.â Megumi sighs, âWhy did you think theyâd post at all?â
âDonât forget you were looking for it with us, Fushiguro!â Yuji countered as Megumi looked away.
Nobara shoves her phone into the pocket of her skirt. âWell then, all thatâs left is to ask Shoko-san, huh?â
âSatoruâs first and only love?â Shoko echoes the question. The two of them nodded eagerlyâMegumi was on the side, pretending like his ear wasnât perked up.
Shoko hums as she ponders. Her deep brown locks had grown past her shoulders; the features of her face became sharper; and the tiredness of her eyes never went away after all these years.
The years gave something that nothing else could: the quiet expertise on her expression.
âWell, thereâs definitely only one person.â She leans into her office chair. An opened pack of cigarettes rested on her desk.
Nobara and Yuji nodded, leaning in closer.
âIf you want to look for her, donât.â Shoko states, âShe left Jujutsu High when we were second-years.âÂ
âFor all we know, sheâs probably dead.â
The smiles on the two excited students crashed to the floor, the sparkle in their eyes were blown out like candles. Megumiâs head turned to the door, arms crossed.Â
âDead?â Yuji echoed.
Nobara wouldnât back down, âCould we at least know her name, Shoko-san?â
They didnât miss the way a small, fond smile appeared on her face,
âY/N.â Shoko answered.
âFind anything, Kugisaki?â Yuji asks with a mouthful of burger.Â
The three young teens were in a comfortable diner, burgers and plastic drinks with straws decorated the table.
Nobara shakes her head, leaning into the red cushions of the booth.Â
âAbsolutely nothing.â She groans.
Megumi has crumbs near his mouth when he says, âYou probably wonât find anything about her since sheâs a sorcerer.â
âIf what Shoko-san said was true, then we wonât find anything even if we ask around.â
Nobara pouts and Yuji looks down at his half-eaten burger.Â
âRight.â Yuji sighs, âThatâd be unfortunate.â
Nobara swipes her drink with unwavering determination, âWell, well, thatâs just an if! What if we choose to believe the alternative that sheâs actually alive!âÂ
Megumi groans while Yuji affirms her drive by nodding excitedly.
âWhat do you two plan on doing then?â Megumi sighs.
Nobara and Yuji turn to their spiky-haired friend, grins growing slowly in enthusiasm.Â
âAbsolutely nothing!â The two exclaim in unison.
Megumi slaps a hand over his eyes.
âFushiguro!â Yuji yelled out, body unable to move in time. The Grade 2 Cursed Spirit barrelled towards Megumi; with the rate itâs going, it was going to land a sure hit.
Megumi turns, eyes widening at the sight of the Curse coiling in satisfaction after cornering him. He lifts his hands to summon Nue but the Curseâs reach was faster than his hands could connect.
Yuji nearly slips as he runs towards Megumi from across the room.
Shiâ
Megumi closes his eyes, bracing for the impact.Â
He pants and his heart thrums in his ears.
For a force that never came.Â
In confusion and pants, the sorcerer cracks his eyes open to find the Curse stunned in front of him. Its flesh starts to swell in odd parts; the discolored skin stretching beyond its limitations before bursting in front of him.
Purple blood rains in the room, splattering all over Megumi and his wide eyes.Â
What the hell?
âSo dirty.â An unfamiliar voice says.
The remnants of the spirit began to dissipate into ash. Yuji stops at the voice, planting his heels firmly on the ground. He holds his tight fists up in a stance.
The two turn to the source of the voice. A figure stands in the crumbled doorway of the abandoned building.
A woman?
âWho are you?!â Yuji exclaims, threateningly.Â
The woman was certainly beautifulâin her late 20s, Megumi thinks. In one hand, she held a sharp blade. Her hair frames the sides of her face that held nothing but calmness even in the face of two threats.
Unless⌠She didnât think of them as threats. Megumi grits his teeth.
You raise your hands, âIâm not here to hurt you.â
âIf I did intend to, I would have done so and started with him.â You flickered your eyes to the black-haired sorcerer on your right.Â
As you beheld his appearance, the boy had open wounds on his body, bleeding from his side. It seemed there had been more curses than the one you just exorcised.
You stepped into the room. The pink-haired one raises his fists and the other has his hands ready to summon more of his shikigami.
âI wouldnât have killed that curse if I wanted to hurt you,â You offered a gentle smile, âYou two⌠you are from Jujutsu High, arenât you?âÂ
Yujiâs brows furrowed further. His hands drop by a fraction. âHow do you know that?â
âItadori! Fushiguro!â Another voice, a girlâs, echoed from Yujiâs end of the concrete halls. Nobara appears and freezes just behind Yuji upon noticing you.Â
The girl, with blood running down half of her face, draws a strong posture. She sported the familiar deep blue skirt and top.
âMan, they really didnât change the uniforms one bit.â A mellow chuckle escapes you. Your arms fall to your sides.
You lean on one hip, âSay, howâs Nanami?âÂ
The three tense, defense stances strengthening. Yuji holds one leg behind the other while Megumi has both hands in front of him, ready to cast his shikigami, and Nobara grips her hammer in a firm fist.
âNanamin?â Yuji says under his breath.
Something about your expression shifts after what Yuji muttered, Megumi notes. A calm change, a little softer.
âMy name is Y/N. I was a Jujutsu High student like you.â
âYouâve become so mature, Shoko.â You smiled, taking a seat beside your old friend that had become a full-fledged doctor.Â
Fushiguro, youâve come to know his name, was on one of the beds you spent quite a bit of time on back in the day. Kugisaki was on the adjacent bed.Â
âDo you still smoke?â You teased.
A reminiscent and fond smile stretches across her face as she crosses her arms, âFour a day.â
Her voice had become smootherâsofter in the way that it was mature.Â
âSome things never change, huh.â A gentle laugh escapes you. âThat canât be healthy for a doctor.â
The warmth in your chest was unmistakable when you were with Shoko, one of the dear friends that you found to miss deeply after you left.
âTrust me, I need it. It was hell after you left.â She utters, throwing one leg over the other.
âI can imagine.â
Her gaze slides to you, âAnd how are you? Where have you been this whole time?â
âIâm a freelancer now. Of course, no jobs that donât sit right with me.â You answered, âLifeâs been fine I guess.âÂ
âWhy donât you come back here?â She offers, ever so calm.Â
A chuckle eases out of you, âTo Jujutsu High? I think the reasonâs obvious, isnât it?â
âI suppose so.â The mellow smile on her face hasnât disappeared.
Unsynched footfall echoes from the hallway that connected to the room you were in, growing closer with each second.Â
The door swings open, revealing Itadori and a face you couldnât forget even if you wanted to. Chin tilted high like he owned the room with his shoulders pushed back.
Gojo Satoru.
âSaâGojo.â You corrected yourself.Â
A part of you that remained stuck in the past felt unraveled.Â
â[Last Name].â He returned with that nostalgic teasing lilt, only deeper and older.Â
The tension that ballooned in your lungs began to deflate slowly, allowing for a small, reminiscent smile to appear on your visage.Â
âYouâre still the same as ever.â
âIs that a compliment or an insult?â He asks with a smirk.
You leaned into your seat with a smile, âStill an idiot, I see.â
Itadoriâs gaze bounces back and forth from Gojo and you. The gears in his head seemingly turned with each statement perfectly countered.
The boy definitely confirmed that you were the girl Gojo had once mentioned.
âThank you for saving my student.â He starts, after shutting the door.Â
The golden afternoon light filters into the room, curtains framing the sides of the window. The strong features Satoru grew into caught the light, bathing him in something familiar.Â
The jaw you used to trace was sharper now, his skin on his cheeks tauter having lost that teenage baby fat. Instead of the circle glasses, he wore a black bandana across his eyes.
You settled into the chair in front of him. He plops down, lazily sprawling as he used to do.
âShoko told me heâs Tojiâs son.â
âHe is.â Satoru admits. The bandana outlines the shape of his eyes.
Your heart that was conditioned to stay in place had suddenly learned how to beat again.
âHow have you been?â You ask, your hands on the arms of the chair.
He is silent for a moment. You canât quite read him from the item that concealed the eyes that used to pour out in shameless emotion.Â
How does Satoru even begin?
He was convinced that heâd lost the one good thing in his life. How does he tell you of the nights he spent drowning in regret, whispering vows to your ghostâhow he should have noticed every shake in your smile, the cups of tea that were never drank.Â
He should have been more selfishâshouldâve had more time with you and damned the missions he believed the world needed.
He should have chased you.
How does he tell you that for the past 11 years, he didnât know where to go after you?
âGood.âÂ
You smiled, âIâm glad youâre happy.â
It killed him. To see your smile flooded in amber light, how the flecks in your eyes didnât change over the years, reflecting how utterly foolish he was and still is.Â
Your smile was a clear x-ray of a life he couldâve had if he chose to be with you.
The slight softening of his smile didnât pass without getting noticed by you.
You start, âGojââ
âSatoru.â He corrects you.
âExcuse me?â
âPlease call me Satoru.â His voice is deep, throaty as if begging.
A pause falls between the two of you for a moment. A fond huff leaves your lips as you lift your gaze to him.
âSatoru.â You nodded.
That name was the subject of your tearful curses at 2am over the past 11 years. A name that you found yourself lamenting in moments where mourning a love so profound got too loud.Â
âYouâve got a stupid blindfold.âÂ
âI guess.âÂ
âYour shit fashion taste hasnât changed.â You commented with a small chuckle.
The pitches of your laugh were stabs to his chest. Satoru should have stayed with you. He should have pulled you in closer instead of leaving that night.
But instead of being honest, he slings an arm over the back of the cushioned chair, âWhat do you mean? My taste has always been great,â
You cock a brow, âSo you say.â
The tension in your fingers relaxes, a macabre relief springing in the person you were now.
âYou grew up well, Satoru.â
The Strongestâs throat bobs with much difficulty.
âI only came because Fushiguro looked like he was about to drop dead.â An explanation more for yourself than him. You rose from the velvet chair across the man.
Sweat beads at his palms, pulse racing in his throat.
âBye, Satoru. It was⌠nice seeing you again.â You smiled, a bag swung over your shoulder as your footsteps abated towards the door.
Before the doorknob makes contact, a hand wraps around your wrist, pulling you back. Followed by a scent too familiar and the shadow casting over you.
âI think we can be brutally honest with each other, Y/N.â He whispers, quietly.Â
âI apologize for what Iâm about to say,â His voice rings in your ears, âIf you ever want to try again, Iâll be waiting here for you.â
âBut if you donât,â His words struggle to come out.
âBe happy. Please.â His breath fans the back of your neck, sending the hairs on your skin to stand.Â
11 years had passed but you two were nothing more than stupid teenagers trying to navigate through messy feelings. More breaths leave you than enter your lungs, an undeniable red on the tips of your ears.Â
You were supposed to hate him. You were still a fool.
You tear your wrist from his grasp, directing a glare in between sequences, âYouâre still the same jerk all those years ago.â Sharp. Unforgiving.
He keeps his tingling hand to himself, electricity shooting up his arm as an unreadable smile appears on his face.
âI know.â
You detested how the sound of your name falling from his lips made your heart do leaps in your chest.
Without turning back, you exit the room and shut the door.
11 years had passed. Both of you were older.
But none the wiser.
A few days after your appearance, Shoko had called you for a mere favor; as old friends newly reunited, the feeling of longing for a friend was stronger than you realized.
And so, you returned to the seemingly adversarial facility.
Moreover as you adjusted to the modifications in the establishment, it was also a foreign sensation having to adjust your gaze upwards whenever Satoruâs voice greetedâhe was tall before but even more so now.Â
If there was one thing that didnât change, it was the way he joked and annoyed you.
âWonât you accompany me to Sendai, Y/N?â He asks like a child, trailing behind you with his hands in his pockets.
âNo thanks.â Your eyes were trained forwards.
âThen how about to Shibuya?â Satoru continues, leaning in to take a peak at your expression every now and then.
A knot formed in between your brows, âEven if it were next door, Iâm not joining you, Satoru.â
âIâll pay for your Kikufuku mochi.â He tries.
âWho says I want mochi?â The groove in your brows deepens. Your hands lift to push a door open but Satoru beats you to it.
He grins at you, bending down to your eye level with a hand on the wood, âEveryone loves mochi.â
Your eyes linger on him in mock disdain, a second too long. Just brief enough that you caught the slight lopsidedness of his smile and for a glimpse of his younger version to flicker through your mind.
You rip your gaze from him as you enter, âYou only say that because you want me to go with you.âÂ
The man follows behind you, âYouâve always been smart, Y/N.â
âIâm still not going, Satoru.â
His relentless attempts of stoking the innocent past did not fail to roast the coals in your blood. As you near Shokoâs office, your throat burns from virtually exclaiming at him while he provides a charming smile each time.
âGojo-sensei isâŚâ Nobara trails off to her two listening friends. The trio had been watching their teacher chase after you like a pup who didnât know how to give up.
âTerrible at talking to women.â She concludes grimly.
Yuji nods in agreement while Megumi allows a deep, tired sigh to represent him.
Meet me at 10:00am.
A few days after that fateful encounter, life was back on track. It would return to normal, you surmisedâSatoru would remain a teacher, surrounded by jovial students and colleagues who praised him, and you would stay doing unstable jobs without the presence of anyone else in your life.
Living what used to be your fears felt less daunting than you expectedâbecause they didnât invoke the feeling of standing on a cliffside. Instead, fear elicited a skill: the skill of detaching yourself.
Sadness, anger, joy, greed, pride were emotions you stowed away, vowed to lock in a vault in an attempt to remove that godforsaken illusion that drove people madâlove.
That didnât stop the way your steps faltered at the sight of a ladyâs white purse; the way your eyes made a double-take when a brand released a blue and white clothesline in their shop windows; or the way you stopped and stared at a gleaming crystalline pond under the summer heat of Tokyoâs parks.
You pushed open the doors to a cafĂŠ.
Swallowing the distractions down, you willed yourself to focus on the job at hand.
You needed this job. The money gained from the previous job was dwindling to its last few bills; if possible, you didnât want to live on the savings you had put aside from it.
The aroma of brewing coffee beans greeted you, accompanied by the hushed chatter of other guests. The space was small enough that you could view the heads of customers from your spot at the entryway.
A guy wearing blue. You had to search for a guy wearing blue, the one who hired you.
âY/N, right?â A voice called, merely a few paces away.
You turned to the source.
Your heart stopped like someone had stepped on it.
Because in the booth right beside you, Satoru was there.
The white-haired sorcerer wore a baby blue button-up, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The glasses perched on his nose was low enough to reveal the cobalt behind that gazed at you.
No way. You hastily scanned the rest of the cafĂŠ, desperately searching for another person donning a blue shirt.
It canât be Satoru. It must be a coincidence.
Blobs of brown and black-haired individuals were in your vision, a mess of neutral colors but not blueânever blue.
âIf youâre looking for the one who hired you, youâve already found him.â
You turned back to Satoru with a slit in between your brows, teeth crunching together.
The man, with a small teasing smile, lifts his phone where your text conversation flashed brightly on the screen.
âMeet me at 10:00am.â Written blindingly on the device with hostile clarity.
The hands on beside your thighs balled into tight fists, nails digging into your palms.
âYouâre the worst, Satoru.â You hissed, taking a step back to leave the cafĂŠ.
âWait-!â He exclaimed, promptly standing up.
His too-loud voice gathered the attention of the customers in the small establishment. The gentle chatter dimmed into murmuring silence. The red burned brightly on the tips of your ears, too many eyes suddenly focused on the two of you.
Satoru clears his throat, adjusting his stance to a more dignified one, âHear me out. Itâs a serious request.â His gaze never left yours, solid and unyielding despite the noise.
Your knuckles turned white. Something in his expression compelled you to stiffly march one foot in front of the other and slide into the seat across him.
The other guests returned to their own conversations and gradually, the background noise returned.
Stuffing the embarrassment down into the pits of your stomach, you found the courage to muster a glare towards the man in front of you.
He flashes a charming smile in return.
He grabs a menu and slides its twin towards you on the table. âWhat would you like? My treat.â
âSatoru.â You warned.
He doesnât stop, his blue eyes roam the pages of the menu. From the corner of your eye, you noticed that images of sweets dominated the laminated board.
âHave you eaten? They have brunch optionsâsalads, sandwiches, pasta. There are also sweets. If you plan to get the milkshake, Iâd recommend the chocolate one, the strawberry flavor is way too artificiââ
âSatoru!â You warned him again, louder, slamming the menu onto the table. The cutlery and glass clatter at the force.Â
The nearby guests turned to look at you, curiosity swimming in their eyes.
He lifts his gaze towards you, peering over the edge of the menu in his hands.
He doesnât sigh, he doesnât click his tongue. He sets down the menu back onto the table, âTwo plates of pasta it is.â
You swear you almost got up and left if he hadnât pointed at the sign stipulating the cafĂŠâs policy: No loitering, must order.
You sat stiffly, wallowing in growing frustration as Satoru went to order at the counter. His tall figure, with muscles and shoulders emphasized by the fitted shirt, captured the sparkling eyes of ladies at other tables.
A heavy sigh came from you as you rested your cheek onto the palm of your propped up elbow.
Satoru returns with a circular buzzer in his hand.
âYou hired me?â You began without a hint of friendliness.
He smiles, âCorrect. I did.â
âTo have lunch?â
âYes.â
âYouâre paying me 10 million yen to have lunch with you.â
âYouâre smart, Y/N.â
âForget it. Cancel the job.â You placed your palms onto the table, a little too loudly, and moved to the exit. âI donât want to see you again ever.â
Before you could slide out of the booth, Satoruâs foot reaches out and blocks your path. Your eyes threw daggers at the man who was too calm. Curse his long legs!
âThatâs not all.â He adds, eyes peeking above his dark glasses.
âThen get to it.â You warned.
Satoru leans towards you, âYou know about Yuji, donât you?â
You settle back into the cushions, âItadori?â Your brow raised.
âYes, exactly. Itadori Yuji. But not just him.â
âI want all my students to become Grade 1 sorcerers,â He explains amidst the sounds of utensils and ceramics clinking.
âAnd youâre a graded sorcerer.â His hand unravels, gesturing to you flippantly. Piecing the puzzle together, his intentions seem to grow clearer.
âI want you to go on a mission with each of them. Just until youâve witnessed all of them once. Then make a recommendation to Yaga.â He states.
You crossed your arms firmly, âYou want a Jujutsu High exile to recommend your students?â
After withdrawing from Jujutsu High, you werenât sure what Yaga or the other higher-ups thought of you. As far as you knew, they probably thought you were conspiring with Suguru due to the timing of it all.
âYouâre a graded sorcerer, regardless. I donât think it matters who the recommendation comes from.â He has that lazy drawl, as if he couldnât care less.
âWhy not Nanami? Why me?â Your glare grew deeper from confusion.
Satoru lets out something in between a whine and a groan, âNanaminâs way too principled to accept my money like this. He said heâll recognize them when he sees the talent blah blah blah.â
You sighed. Even if it were an excuse, it did seem like the sort of thing Nanami would do.
â10 million yen.â You echoed.
With one arm slung over the back of his seat, a growing smile stretched on his face, â10 million yen.â
The calculations ran in your head at a rapid pace. 10 million yen would be enough to cover your current, somewhat frugal, lifestyle for the next 5 years. If you took other jobs during that time, more money could be added to your savings.
Satoruâs smile softened at your thinking expression, a visage too similar to quiet adoration.
The buzzer vibrated on the table, cutting your thoughts short. Satoru swipes it off from the table before promptly standing up.
âIâll get our orders,â He offers that familiar smileâonly now olderâthat elicited a momentary churn in your stomach, âThink about it over pasta.â
Satoru strolls casually to the counter, paying the lovesick stares not an ounce of attention.
You stared at his back.
10 million yen was certainly a lot of money. Money that you needed.
While he was mid-slurp of a pasta noodle, you said, âWe have a deal.â
The noodle slaps across his lips, painting the surrounding skin orange. His sparkling gaze found you too engrossed in the meal.
A smile full of sauce crossed his face.
âThen, Iâll let you know when the first mission starts.â
You nodded, turning your fork and watching the noodles curl around the metal.
âThis pasta is terrible, Satoru.â Your nose crinkled.
He chuckles, âIâll buy you a slice of ice cream cake to make up for it.â
âYou really do know how to strike a deal.â
âIâll also eat your leftovers if you canât stomach it.â
âNow, youâre just being greedy.â
Satoru told you that heâd be texting you about the mission. What you didnât expect was him letting you know on the day of and arriving on your front door five minutes after.
The chime of your doorbell bounced off the walls of your 1 bedroom apartment. You had just gotten his text, no way it was him, right?Â
Clad in your mix-matched pajamas and unruly hair that you were flattening with your palms, the view of the door grew nearer as your soft slippers padded across the space.
The door swung open. You hadnât expected to crane your neck up so early in the morning.Â
Much less due to Gojo Satoru.
âMorning!â He beams, a too enchanting grin under his usual blindfold.
You squinted, a flicker of a frown downturning the corners of your mouth. The smile on his face only grows.Â
With an elbow on the doorframe, he leans over you.
âI see you still get grumpy in the mornings.â He teases.
The frown on your visage deepens, an annoyed recess in between your brows.Â
âThatâs because you gave me such a short notice!â You barked.
He grins, âIâm sorry, Y/N,â But he doesnât seem apologetic at all.
He pushes off the doorframe, âCan I come in?â
The door slams a few inches away from his nose.Â
Your shoulders shake with seething anger, nostrils flaring. The booming noise of the doorslam still lingers in the small apartment.
âIâll see you at the car downstairs!â His voice, annoyingly, is still loud and full through the panel.
After being rudely awakened by a rushed text and his grating presence at 7:30am, you were now in a sleek, black carâone of Jujutsu Highâs company cars, you noted.Â
Your shoulder was pressed against the passenger car door, Satoru was on the other end.
Despite the established nature of the mission, it didnât help the brick lodged in your stomach at the rigid air in the car.Â
Satoruâs presence only added fuel to the flame.
âLook, Y/N! Itâs the restaurant we used to gââ
âHow are your injuries, Fushiguro?â You turned to the black-haired student in between the two of you.
âIâm alright now.â The boy answers, notably frustrated by the loud, full voice of the man beside him. The persistent frown on Fushiguroâs countenance was an indication heâd rather crouch in the carâs trunk than sit between two ex-lovers.
âMan, I still remember they had the best crepes in town,â Satoru continues rambling, head thrown back onto the headrest with a smug smirk, âThey always added a little bit more whipped cream. You liked the mixed berries, didnât you, Y/N?â
âThey closed down years ago, Satoru.â You sighed, leaning onto your fist that mounted onto the carâs windowsill. The blur of bold, forest green trees and the occasional buildings whizzed past.
âOho, does that mean you visited them regularly?â
âNo comment.â The thrum in your temple was starting to build into a headache.
âDoes no comment mean yes?â Satoru prodded, âYou said the same thing when I asked you to be a teacher at Jujutsu High.â
A groan rose deep from your soul while the two students turned to look at you. Yuji twisted from the front passenger seat, hazel eyes looking at you with a sparkle.
âYouâre going to be a teacher, L/N-san?â Yuji askedâhis voice was exactly like Satoruâs, complete and optimistic. The way his eyes light up reminds you of the stray dogs you fed during jobs.
You couldnât suppress a fond smile, âNo. I havenât accepted Satoruâs offer yet.â
âYet? That gives me hope, Y/N.â Satoru finally turns to you, the blindfold still concealing the eyes you havenât seen properlyâaside from the small peeks at the cafe.Â
You havenât seen them since that conclusive night.
Were they darker now? Were they the same complete crystalline blue that was made to reflect under the planetâs beam? It struck you that the two of you were no longer the teenagers that hollered in laughter at the back of Ijichiâs car.
His wild hair had been tamed into an undercut; the wideness of his shoulders carved by years of training. Likewise, you didnât remain the same.
The quirk of your lips dropped and your eyes drifted back to the passing buildings in the window.
âWho knows?â You murmured.
Upon arriving on the mission grounds, a revelation came quickly: Satoru Gojo didnât hold back on his training.
Because the aforementioned teacher was using multiple Grade 1 curses to impart whatever wisdom he was planning to the two students.
âIs this really okay?â You stood on a ledge inside the abandoned hospital beside Satoru, looking down at the two students' attempt to exorcise the gruelling Grade 1 curses.
His hands are shoved into his pockets, head tilted in their direction.
âItâll be fine.â He answers in a sing-song manner.
Two Grade 1 curses and two students that were no more than Grade 2 sorcerers. This too felt familiar, reeling at the back of your mindâsomething youâve forgotten.
A boy with Itadoriâs sunny smiles, around the same grade as Itadori now.Â
Right. Haibara.
Your classmate could have been standing here beside you two. While the world continued to turn, Yu remained stuck in the past. Forever. You slowly lowered yourself and sat on the edge of the precipice, feet dangling in the air.
The cursed tool you often brandishedâa swordâbecame a pillar to rest your head on.Â
How would Yu have looked grown-up?
Your chin rested on the butt of the sword, eyes sliding towards Satoru.Â
Would Yuâs expression have the same quiet experience Satoru carried? Would he have grown taller like the sorcerer beside you? Perhaps, heâd also grow to love rice even more as the years go by.Â
Haibara Yu, the boy regretfully frozen in time. The boy who was your dear friend, the brother-type who would fail at many things except when it came to stealing all your toothpaste.
Satoru turned at the sound of your unconscious chuckle.
âIf you feel like it, go on and save them. Iâll be right behind you.âÂ
The wistful thoughts in your head faded at the cut of Satoruâs voice. You lifted your gaze up at him, âIsnât this supposed to be training?â You asked.
He sets himself down beside you, close enough that your shoulders brush for a moment.
âWhat doesnât kill you makes you stronger,â Satoru muses with a deep, teasing lilt, âBut by the looks of it, the curses will actually kill them.â
You manage a snort, cheek falling onto the butt of your sword as you gaze at him.
âYouâre a terrible teacher, you know that?â Though the soft smile on your face offered otherwise.
Despite the black cloth wrapped around his eyes, even a blind man could tell he was looking at you. The corner of his mouth snags up into a smirk, âIâve been told.â
âIâve also been told Iâm devastatingly handsome, have the strongest techniques there iââ
âAnd youâre also a blabbermouth.â You interrupt with a growing smile.
âEspecially that.âÂ
An unconscious giggle left the smile on your face. Satoruâs shoulders fall ever so slightly, the smile on his face parting at the soundâan angelic tune that he had almost forgotten.Â
He missed this. He missed having your giggly smiles beside himâespecially when they were because of him. He missed the way your nose crinkled slightly, how the sound of your laughter triggered warmth to bloom in his chest unashamed.Â
You were so beautiful to Satoru.Â
Even more so now that you were older, now that he knew what he shouldnât let go of ever again.
The smile on your face mellowed at the sight of his stunned frame. The heat quickly crawled into your cheeks and your pulse began to race in your neck.
No way you just laughed in front of himâbecause of him.Â
âSensei!â Itadoriâs voice echoed through the booms of debris crumbling and the blasts of punches flying. Your attention flies to the two boys who were currently flipping and dodging supernatural attacks.Â
A third Grade 1 curse had appeared just as one was about to be exorcised.
You stood up before the noise in your chest could formulate words. Satoru seems to snap out of what he was thinking, directing his gaze elsewhere. The tip of your sword ran along the concrete in a grating drag as you adjusted your grip.
The lump in your throat was difficult, âRight. They need us.â
Satoru nods without looking at you. The thick air between the two of you began to loom heavierâtoo uncharacteristic of the proud sorcerer beside you.Â
You nodded awkwardly before leaping down onto the concrete plain Fushiguro and Itadori were in. The concrete curses as your heels make contact, cracking at the sheer force of the landing.
Fushiguro had wounds drawn along his arms, uniform tattered in numerous places. Itadori had long splits of skin along his chest. Neither injury was enough to impair the performance of the two.
But you were sure to hear from Shoko after.Â
The clicks of Satoruâs footsteps echoed from behind you, calm and unhurried.
He stops beside you, just enough to catch a comforting earthy aroma and to send your pulse thrumming in your wrists.Â
If he was awkward, he did well not to show it. He leans down to your side with a small smirk, âShow me what youâve been doing for the past 11 years, sweetheart.â
The two Cursed Spirits were left to the two students while you and Satoru dealt with the third surprise.
You swung your blade through the air, sending the purple liquid on the metal splattering onto the cracked concrete.Â
The spirit, a maggot-like figure that was twice the size of you, succumbed to the injuries and crumbled into a pile of ash in the ebbing purple blood running along the ground.Â
âLooks like we still make a great team, huh?â Satoru boasts with a proud chuckle.
You nudge his side with the blunt end of your sword before sheathing it. The sorcerer feigns a yelp, exaggerating.
The two students were still fighting the cursed spiritsâhowever, they were on the winning end with minimal injuries.
âYour students do deserve the recommendaââ
Tap. Satoruâs finger swipes along your cheek. You flinched at the cold sensation before catching the color on his fingerâpurple.
A dripping purple liquid from the puddle of the exorcised Grade 1 spirit.
âSatoru,â You seethed while the 28-year old sorcerer scurried off like a middle school girl.
âChildish idiot! Get back here!â You grumbled, running after the giant amidst the crumbling and distorted screams of curses behind you.
You scooped up a handful of the purple blood before chasing after him.
Satoruâs rich laughs echoed through the abandoned hospital.
Yuji pants, red scrapes decorated along his cheek as he stands victorious over the Cursed Spirit he had conquered.
âWhereâs Gojo-sensei and Y/N-san?â The boy asks, strangely energetic after the fight.
Fushiguro pats down his tattered sleeve, likewise overcoming his own opponent, âBeats me.â
Striking at an opportune time, the two of you appear from a dark hallway. Satoru was covered in purple bloodâthe liquid about to disintegrate into ashâwhile your arm had an odd purple handprint.Â
âOh, are you two done?â Satoru chimes from the hallway, casually approaching the two students.
The boys shared the same awkward expression.
âI think we should be asking you that, sensei.â
Back at the Jujutsu High grounds, Gojo was the first one out of the company car, followed by Fushiguro and Yuji.Â
As soon as you stepped out of the car, a bouquet of flowers bombarded your senses. The petals were shoved up against your nose, forcing you to take a slight step back. A powerful arrangement of your favorite colors, each flower competing in beauty.
Your eyes looked past the bundle and found Satoru behind them. You were about to reject it until you found the receipt of money transferred to your account underneath them.
Your fingers brush against his as you take the bouquet into your arms, âThank you, Satoru.â
âThe rest will follow after every mission with a new student.â He smiles.
You hug the flowers to your chest with something resembling reluctant loathing in your chestâlike you want to resist, like you want to turn away.
âYou donât have to give flowers.â You murmured.
âI know. I donât have to.â He says.
But I want to.Â
He doesnât even need to say the words for you to fill in the lines.
âIâm going home.â You quickly say, turning on your heel and dodging him.
The roads surrounding the Jujutsu High campus were sufficiently embedded into your implicit memory that you didnât need a phone to return to your apartment. The bickering of the two boys were gradually drowned out by whirring engines from passing cars and the silence offered by the orange sky.
However, there was another set of footsteps in sync with yours.
âSatoru.â You fumed.
When you found your feet unwilling to move, he caught up with you, halting right beside yours.
âIâm going home.â You stated, volatile under your bleak words.Â
He tilts his chin down, as if to look at you through the blindfold, âI know.â
The grip you had on the bouquetâs gathered stems tightened.
âThen why are you here?âÂ
âTo walk you home.â He replied, casual like it was a given.
âYou have no obligation to do so.â
The way the muscle that feathered in his jaw loosened and how his arms slackened into his pockets re-echoed his answer before he even said anything:
Because I want to.
That didnât sit right with the rapid tremors in your chest, the breathlessness of your lungs. He doesnât get to try again, he doesnât get to make you his fool one more time.
The familiar feelingâthe butterflies in your stomach you loathed with an agonizing furyârushes you, only unsettling the unstable ground you stood upon. The indignant look in your eyes should have chased him away, he should turn around before the curses that began to dance on your tongue took form.
âGo away, Satoru.â You ripped your glare from him and followed the straight road painted in lonesome gold.
Satoru watched your figure draw further from him, his heels rooted into the ground.
He didnât understand why he began to escort you home in the first place. The second he spotted your person walking home from the dropoff point, all he knew was he didnât want you to walk alone.Â
He couldnât place a name to the magnetic urge, the pull that never failed to make him gravitate towards you.
That was why he found himself walking a step behind you, even as you warned him off.
Each tap of his shoes on the pavement was a jarring clangor to your ears. The resounding noises prodded open an old wound you desperately tried to stitch up.
11 years of trying to undo what he had done to you.Â
Only for him to unravel you in a few moments.
âSatoru.â You bit out.
But his footsteps donât relent.Â
âSatoru. Please.â You croaked.
He stopped abruptly.Â
Maybe if you pleaded, heâd stop. Heâd stop doing all these things for you and send you off with what little of your dignity you had left.
Please. Satoru was always weak to that word if it came from you.Â
You took the chance and vanished at the bend in the road.
The sigh that left his lungs was heavy, full of a chronic ache that broke him. He ran a hand through his white hair.
The last thing he wanted to do was scare you off when he finally got you in front of him.
You turned corners and took familiar shortcuts. The same vibrant posters from 11 years ago were strung along the bricks of the alleyway, only now torn and dull. Trees that used to be saplings had grown into towering beasts of green.Â
If focusing on micro-details on the way home was enough to get rid of the ugly sensation in your chest, youâd have been cured completely.Â
But it wasnât. Instead of distracting you, the white and blue details only burned your eyes.Â

Young adult! Gojo Satoru x Young adult fem! Reader
ęąĘÉ´á´á´ęąÉŞęą: âA collection of memories of Satoru and You trying to figure out how to parent Megumi and Tsumiki during your early adulthood.â
á´á´É´á´á´É´á´: Fluff, Megumi and Tsumiki are adopted, terms of endearments, Gojo and Reader are sorcerers, 2009 setting.
á´Ąá´Ęá´ á´á´á´É´á´: 2.1k words
The first time Megumi calls you and Satoru Mama and Papa.
For you, it happened on a day too ordinary.
You were lounging on the couch with Megumi, scrolling through online catalogues of school items on Satoruâs tabletâa new invention.
It was Back to School season, a torturous time of the year for a first-time mother figure who had zero clue.
You hardly knew what a kid his age needed. Pencils, Sharpeners, NotebooksâIf so, how many? What colors did he like? Did he prefer them plain or designed?
Megumi watched as you went back-and-forth on multiple items, internally fighting yourself on which items to add to your cart.
His throat began to close up and his heart hammered at his chest at the bubbling idea that sparked a flame within him.
Would you get mad if he did this? Despite the uncertainty, the words came out quietly, youâd miss it if you werenât paying attention.
âMa, could I also ask for black backpack?â
You froze, the finger that swiped on the flat screen stopped. Megumiâs lips were pressed into a thin line, eyes showing uncertainty as he curled up against your side.
He kept his gaze trained on the screen as if he didnât just call you Mama for the first time. Truth be told, he was afraid of your reaction.
âOf course, Gumi.â Your words were smooth, like it wasnât different from any other request.
The only sign Megumi felt that you were appreciative was when you wrapped an arm around him, pulling him closer to your side. His small face buried into the crook of your neck.
The opportunity presented itselfâyour lips pressed onto the top of his head, tender and soft.
You were warm, Megumi thought.
Internally, you tried so hard to act normal about it.
Even if back-to-school shopping was daunting to you, youâd do anything to make sure Megumi was as comfortable as he could be.
For Satoru, it was completely different.
It happened during lunch. Satoru had just returned from a mission and brought back food for the three of youâTsumiki was out with her friends in town.
Containers full of food were splayed like a feast on the center of the dining table. You were washing your hands while the two boys ate and conversed.
âPa, did the restaurant give extra sauce for the tempura?â Megumi searches through the plastic bags.
âNah, theyâve been stingy these days.â
They both seem to realize at the same time. The air in the room drops to a standstill, waiting.
Megumiâs face heats up. The word slipped so easily, he hadnât even realized. It was as if he had been calling Satoru that endearment the whole time.
Then you heard sniffling. You turned immediately.
âSatoru, are you crying?!â
âMegumi!â Satoru cries out, dramatically.
All the boy knew next was a 6â3 giant sprawling all over him, wailing while blubbering about how happy he was.
â
â
âThe first time Satoru helps Megumi with homework.
â"Megumi, why'd you score so low on this assignment? And why did you hide it?" You asked the boy after finding a stuffed paper with very red, very bold 4/30 in his bag.
âThe boy fidgets with his fingers, "It's the second time I did that assignment." He grumbles, eyes averting from yoursâhis own admission of guilt.
âYour heart wavered at the cute expression he was making. You sighed and crouched down to his level, "Then why did you still score so low? You couldâve asked for help."
You knew the boy had a tendency to shoulder things on his own. Even if it was just schoolwork, you wished he learned to depend on you or Satoru more.
â"I scored better on my first one." He grumbled, as if a little bitter.
â"Then what happened?"
â"Papa helped me."
â"And you scored even lower?"
âMegumi nodded, brows furrowed.
âJust in time, the said papa in question walked inâpowdered sugar on his chin and all over his shirt. He flashes a toothy grin at the two of you.
â"Dear family!" He greets.
âMaybe Megumi failed because of Satoru.
âNo, he definitely did.
â
âProtecting Megumi from a Curse
â"Papa, Mama, why are you in school with me?" Megumi grumbles, cheeks dusted with pink.
âHis classmates stare at him as he walks through the halls, with both parents on either side. With tens of eyes locked on him, Megumi stuck out like a sore thumb.
âOne parent was blowing bubblesâthe toy was bought from the small stall that sold knick-knacks at the front of the school. The other one was busy popping the bubbles that drifted in the wind.
â"Would you please stop that?!" He exclaims, pulling on Satoru's shirt.
â"It's fun, Megs." Satoru grins down at the spiky-haired boy as he lowers the bubble wand, "Why don't you ask us for more money? There are a lot of toys to be bought, you know."
â"I'm not a kid!" He retorts.
â"Sure, Gumi." You laughed, placing your hand on top of his head, ruffling the hair.
âHe grumbles at you, something you couldn't hear.
â"Are none of you going to tell me why you're here?!"
â"You'll see it then you'll understand." Satoru says with a teasing lilt.
â"That's way too cryptic, Toru." You laughed.
âYou stopped at the entrance of the school, letting Megumi enter on his own. He looks back at you with furrowed brows, like he doesn't quite get what you mean.
â
âHe understood what you meant during a game at recess.
âThe ball dropped from his hands as nothing less than what looked to be a monster appeared in front of him. A body with bubbling flesh, thrice his sizeâeyes bulged from the top of its figure down to its mangled body.
âDeep green flesh, discolored and harrowing; its legs barely looked like it could support its body. It stares at him, body further contorting in excitement.
â"Hey Fushiguro! What's taking you so long?" His friends yelled from the open space where they were playing soccer.
âMegumi's little legs began to shake as it remained rooted in the spot. Sweat beaded at his forehead, sliding down to his throat where it bobbed.
â"What are you looking at? There's nothing over there!" Another one of his friends exclaims, wondering what had made the boy so captured.
â"You see a ghost somewhere?" Another snickered.
âThe world seems to tilt, to narrow as the monster looks at Megumi with crooked excitement.
âOne of his legs was positioned behind him, ready to bolt. The air was quiet, flat, anticipation hanging in it.
âIt happens in a blink of an eye.
âThe monster lunges for him. Megumi, panic written into his face, bolts with a tight throat. He slips on the slippery dirt, hindering his sprint.
âThe entity was too quick. In two steps of Megumi, it had taken ten. Before the boy knew it, it was already breathing down his neck.
â"Such a filthy thing."
âThe next thing Megumi processed was being swept up into a pair of arms, safe and familiar.
â"Are little kids your target?" Satoru's voice is smooth and steady as he holds Megumi.
âThe spiky-haired boy's body is racked with pants and shakes, as if air was being yanked from his lungs. When he realized Satoru and you were there, only then did he allow his racing heart to calm.
âThe monster stoppedâmore like forced to stop by Satoru's infinity. It was as if it had run into an impenetrable wall.
â"You okay, Gumi?" You appeared behind Satoru, smiling. Megumi's eyes were still wide but he managed a small, shaky nod.
â"Get a good look at this, Megs," Satoru smirks in that cocky fashion you knew well. Megumi turns in his hold, eyes straining to look at the revolting thing.
â"This is what you call a Curse." Satoru explains, "Such a disgusting thing, right?"
â"No one else can see them except us. That's why it's our responsibility to protect others." He continues, "When you're older, you'll be able to do this too."
â"Now, look at how cool your Mama is." He has a stupidly proud smirk on his face.
âYou step forward. Megumi sees you position your fingers in a certain way, something unique. In one second, the monster bursts like a balloon of meatâ the rolling eyes bulged out of its sockets and its bubbling flesh swelling then popping.
âRemnants of death littered the space before disintegrating into ash in the wind.
âMegumi was still, eyes wide.
â"My wife is too cool!" Satoru gushes, cheering from the sidelines. You give him a silly pose, earning more cheers and hollers from the sorcerer.
âAs you wade further into the plain, Satoru leans down to the boyâs ears as his small head buries into Satoruâs shoulder.
"Don't be afraid, Gumi." Satoru smiles, lifting his hand to the back of Megumiâs head.
â"Nothing will hurt you when I'm here."
â"Found it!" Your distant voice exclaims. You lifted something that looked like a purple finger with a long dark nail.
â
âTrying to enroll Megumi and Tsumiki in a school.
â"You're awfully young to be a parent." One of the mothers beside you commented as you sat in line.
âYou awkwardly chuckled, scratching your cheek. "I guess I am."
â"Honey!" Heads turn at the sound of an uncharacteristically cheery voice. You turned immediately, spotting Satoru entering the door.
âHe plops onto the empty seat you'd been saving. "I got Megumi's Residence Card and Tsumiki's Health Insuranceâ" He rambles.
âSatoru hands you a messy stack of papersâpapers you were completely unaware you needed until you got here. With meticulous eyes and a heart churning from stress, you reviewed the documents again and again.
â"My, your boyfriend is quite handsome." The lady beside you remarks fondly.
â"You've been talking to my wife?" Satoru asks with an excited boom in his voice, a little too much emphasis on the wife part.
"My wife has been stressing about this the whole morning. My wife is amazing at taking care of the kids, you see, so my wife gets a little too concerned at times."
âHe loved saying my wife a little too much. Your cheeks warmed. âMaybe my husband should learn to use his inside voice.â
âYou two had agreed to pretend to be married, at least in school settings, to give Megumi and Tsumiki good images.
Though you admonished him, the smile on his face only grows into a proud grin.
âThe buzzer rings, the screech bouncing off the walls. A voice resounds from a speaker calling your name.
â"Well, that'll be me and my wife!"
âTeaching Tsumiki how to do makeup and dress up
ââI-Isnât this too much, Y/N-san?â Tsumiki looks up at you from under her eyelashes, cheeks filled with pink. Her eyebrows drew together in embarrassment.
âDonât you worry,â You gave her a thumbs up, âI used Satoruâs card."
âIsnât that worse?"
âItâs all fine! In fact, heâll be ecstatic that you asked for something.â You grinned.
All the girls in Tsumikiâs grade started to use makeupâa little blush, lipstick, and eyeshadow. Naturally, when the crowd flocks to do one thing, those left behind start to feel like sore thumbs.
âIf you donât like it, then donât give a damn about what other people say,â You hummed, laying down the equipment you had shopped with Tsumiki earlier. âBut if you do, then still donât give a damn about what others say.â
She nods reluctantly, taking a seat on the chair in front of the vanity. You smiled.
Tsumiki used to coil around herself, forcing herself to take the least amount of space in the room.
You were glad that she was unlearning that habit.
âThen, letâs start with the basicsâŚâ
Hours later, Satoru was waiting downstairs with Megumi. He leaned against a counter, talking the boyâs ear off with nonsense.
All the words died in his throat when you and Tsumiki walked down the stairs.
You wore a soft baby blue dress, one that matched Satoruâs eyes when light swam in them. Tsumiki was behind you, shoulders tense and hands gripping onto the back of your skirt, sporting a dress that was similar in color yet different in style.
Her deep brown hair was curled and half-up. The beauty on her face was emphasized by the age-appropriate makeup, highlighting her features and her long lashes.
âArenât my girls just the prettiest?â Satoru pushes himself off the counter.
He saunters towards the two of you, his eyes impossibly soft.
âNo one tops this level of beauty.â He presses a gentle kiss on your cheek before turning to Tsumiki.
He leans down and places a feather-light kiss on the back of Tsumikiâs hand. The natural red that bloomed on her cheeks outdid the artificial pink dusted on them.
âYou look amazing, Tsumiki.â
Satoru then whips his head to Megumi, âIsnât your sister so pretty?â
Megumi, a little dazed, nods before muttering a quiet, âYeah.â

Part 1 â Part 2 â Part 3
âSatoru met you when he wasn't looking for love.
âIf someone asked him what his ideal type was, he'd probably describe her as...
â"Well," Satoru crossed his arms, brows furrowed and lips pressed into a tight line.
âShoko's tired eyes lit up by a fraction. Was Gojo Satoru finally using that head of his? Was he actually thinking?
âThe vibrant greenery in the Jujutsu High grounds was a talisman against negativity, creating a soothing space for the students. The large tree Satoru and Shoko sat under was a welcome reprieve to the growing heat of the sun as its course neared noon.
âThe two first-year students sat on a bench, engaging in idle chat.
â"Qualities I'm looking for?" He repeated Shoko's question, exasperated. He unlinked his arms and leaned back onto his palms.
âSatoru's chin was titled up to the sky. The picturesque azure of the heavens were born in his eyes, a complete manifestation of the limitless beyond in Satoru Gojo.
âShoko leaned in like a curious cat.
âSatoru's head lolled onto his shoulder lazily, "Well...! First of all, what I'm really looking for is soft," He began to list. Shoko nodded fervently, leaning in more while perking her ear.
â"Has to be sweet," He continued, "But also a little cold! I like it when they're a little coldâbrings out the fun of it, ya'know." He added, tone boyish and excited.
âShoko nodded and leaned in with each one. She noted how his cheeks started to flush and how jovial his expression suddenly became.
âUntil...
â"Wait," Shoko paused. "Are you talking about kikufuku mochi?"
âSatoru turned to her, eyes a little too bright, "Is that not what you asked for?"
â"Didn't you ask me what kind of qualities make up the best kikufuku mochi?" His head tilted slightly in confusion.
â"You're absolutely hopeless." Shoko sighed, fingers itching for a cigarette. Just when she thought she could finally matchmake her friend, she was only reminded of how stunted he was.
âSo no, Gojo Satoru was not looking for love. Did not even begin to have an idea of what it was.
âAfter all, how does a boy who has only known how unkind the world could be begin to understand love?
â
â
â"They are your juniors," Principal Yaga begins. He turns to the three new bloods of Jujutsu High, "Please say hello."
âHis words were an implicit instruction and you would be stupid not to follow them. Haibara beat you to it, though. He always had the energy to jump into anything.
â"Good morning! My name's Yu Haibara," The boy beamed, wide smile stretching across his countenance. You swear you could see sun rays radiating from his grin.
âThe other student on your right was tall with pale blonde hair, "My name is Nanami Kento." He followed, voice steady and calm unlike Haibara's.
âEveryone's eyes turned to you next. Your heart picked up slightly at the sudden attentionâespecially that one senior who had such compelling eyes.
âLike the other two, you gave your name. You couldn't help but notice the senior with the piercing eyes beneath round glasses that kept staring at you. Though he looks like the type to probably only use his fingers for a comb, his hair was still as fluffy as snow.
âPrincipal Yaga introduces them. You learn their names. Shoko Ieiri, Geto Suguru, and...
âGojo Satoru.
â"Your classroom is over there," Yaga says gruffly, "Don't cause too much trouble, alright?"
â
âSatoru couldn't stop staring at you. Even if he willed his eyes to focus on something else, he'd find his gaze still trained on your person.
âThe shy glances you made towards him sent his heart hammering and his palms sweating.
âWhat is this feeling?
âHis cool demeanor crumbled immediately, converting him into nothing more than a tense statue. Geto's eyes slid towards him, cocking a brow at the sudden stiffness in his friend's shoulders.
âSatoru kept tapping his feet, hands stuffed into his pockets to keep them from leaking waterfalls. Satoru never taps his feet.
âSurely, it must be the summer heat.
â
âSatoru never chased attention until he tasted yours.
âAnd he was a complete idiot about it.
â"I'm so sorry, Y/N!" The man was practically sobbing, hands stuck in the air awkwardly like he didn't know what to do with them. His expression, deeply frazzled, didn't know anything except the word 'Sorry.'
âEarlier in the day, Gojo Satoru had noticed that you entered the outdoor garden area where he and Geto were. Shoko walked beside you, entertaining you with deep conversation.
âShoko was glad to have another girl in the school, someone she could approach easily. Your soft laughs from the distance left a strange tingling sensation in Satoru's ears.
âGojo Satoru, the boy with air in his head, was a slave to his impulses. Before he knew it, he was showing off his new Martial Arts moves to his black-haired friend.
âHe made sure his punches carried more force, arms extended firmly with each thrusted fist. In between sequences of the wind catching his blows, he'd look over to you to see if you were watching.
âAnd if you weren't, his voice was louder as he bragged about how Yaga complimented his forms to Geto.
â"Even Yaga said my form's one of the best he's ever seen!"
âHis poor friend was utterly confused but unsurprised at his spontaneous behavior.
âSatoru kept displaying his proficiency in Martial Arts in the open spaceâconfidently throwing hook after hook, adding spins to his kicks as if he owned the training grounds.
âIt seemed he only realized he overestimated the size of the space when his elbow collided with your face.
âOne second, you were talking about how you and Shoko both hated night missions. The next, a sharp elbow crashed into your faceâstraight on the nose.
"What theâ" âThe impact knocked you off your feet, sending you onto your rear on the grass. As if the blood dripping from your nostrils didn't torment you enough, your ass started to sting.
âSatoru was horrified.
â
â"I'm so sorry!" His cheeks were red in embarrassment and shame. He knelt in front of you as you sat on the bench beside the vending machine.
âThe day had bled into afternoon yet Satoru did not leave your side at all. Every minute since the incident, without missing a beat, he'd utter an apologyâvoice stripped from his usual bravado.
âYour hand held up your second cold can of soda against your nose. Shoko immediately patched you up when it happened but the soreness seemed like it did not want to leave just yet.
âYou waved Satoru off with your free hand, "It's fine, Satoru. You've said sorry more times than I can count on my hands." Your voice was muffled by the can pressed to your nose and lips.
â"But still," He sniffled, "I hurt you."
â"It was an accident, Satoru."
â"Doesn't matter."
âBetraying your will, your cheeks warmed. You beheld his perpetual pout and the creased skin between his eyebrows. His constant frowning hauled an increasing worry within you of him getting wrinkles on his stupidly pretty face.
âYou sighed, knowing that he would probably never forgive himself unless you did something about it.
â"Then, how about you buy me ice cream? I'll forget this ever happened if you do."
âSatoru lifted his eyes up at you. His expression lit up as if a light had been switched on. He sprung up to his feet like the floor had burned him.
â"Say less. I'll buy you as much ice cream as you want." He promised, extending his hand towards you. His tall frame blocked the golden beams of the afternoon, casting his shadow over your person.
âA lopsided grin was plastered on his face, blue eyes finally sparkling. You couldn't help but let out a small smile.
â"We have a deal." You placed your hand in his.
â
âAn elbow to the face was the catalyst to Satoru's growing presence in your life. For the weeks that followed, he consistently dragged you around everywhere.
âShopping districts during Saturdays, movie nights after missions, convenience store runs while Principal Yaga wasn't looking. Most of the things you did practically involved him.
âWhen you had government requirements, Satoru was in the office waiting room with you. When he ruins his shoes after missions, you were there in the shop with him, commenting as he flaunted his 'otherworldly beauty' as he calls it.
âYou were there when Satoru was learning how to drive, a few weeks after you'd arrived at Jujutsu High. And maybe you shouldn't have.
â"Satoru!" You screamed, clutching onto your seatbelt with one hand while the other gripped onto the grab handle.
â"Calm down! I'm just overtaking." The proud man said as if you weren't pushed against the cardoor just a few moments ago from his swerving.
âYou huffed, looking at the view in front instead. Wasn't there supposed to be a large shopping district around this area?
âThat was when you noticed that the road was completely different from the street you were supposed to be on. The GPS blinking.
â"You missed the fucking turn, you idiot!" You yelled, pointing at the digital GPS that was mounted in between you. The purple lines that ran along the digital streets rerouting itself.
â"Oh." Satoru nervously giggled, an admission of guilt while both of his hands remained on the steering wheel.
âSatoru managed to convince some new assistantâIjichiâto lend him his company car. You weren't sure if Ijichi was aware that Satoru barely knew how to drive.
â"I'm gonna die..." You sunk into the leather seats. Red indents in the form of lines ran along your palms from how hard you gripped the strap. "This is it. My last moments."
âHis eyes slid towards yours. The glow caught in them, swirling with youthful mischief. The crystalline blue kissed by the light that poured through the windows.
âHe had that stupid smile, toothy and too wild for his own goodâand that made your breaths turn shallow. "Sweetheart, you forget who you're talking to. As if I'd let you die while I'm here." Satoru proudly declared, giving you a thumbs up.
âThoughts drained from your head and heat unknowingly flooded your cheeks. Maybe it wasn't so bad...
â"Satoru, keep your eyes on the road!" You screamed as you caught the rectangular figure of a truck rapidly approaching.
â"Shit!"
â
âYou sat on the roof of Ijichi's company car with Satoru, ice cream in your hands. He had bought you the sweet, saying something about it being compensation for the trauma he caused.
âThe car was skewed as it remained in park. The front wheels were slanted inwards, dark tire marks littering the empty open-space parking lot.
âThe sun slowly grew heavy and began its gradual descent under the horizon. Your eyes watched how the blue turned into a sandy yellow then a golden orangeâa metamorphosis of a story changing.
âThe ice cream was sweet, the perfect amount for you to keep eating without biting back from the sweetness. Courtesy of the sweets connoisseur beside you.
âSatoru didn't know what love was.
âBut his body knew before he did. As you watched the sunset, his eyes were far from the skyâhis eyes were on you.
âHis hands twitched as he watched with slight envy how the afternoon breeze could easily brush the loose strands of hair on your face.
âI must get better at driving, he thought. Maybe then he could pick you up from missions and bring you to his favorite dessert shops.
â"That cloud kind of looks like Nanami, doesn't it?" You pointed out, index finger directed towards a pink cloud.
â"Yeah." He answered without looking away from you.
âAll he could focus on was the ice cream smeared on the corner of your mouth. His heart thumped, wondering whether or not he should tell you or act cool and wipe it off himself.
âDid he even have the right to touch you? The incessant beating in his chest reflected the internal war in him.
âThen you were talking about Haibara and Nanami. Something about a mission, something funny, he thinks, based on how your lips began to tug upwards.
â"Thenâ" Laughter bubbled from your throat, "Then, Haibara started cry-laughing and even Nanami was chuckling!" You laughed, chest rumbling with the memory of your most recent mission that ended with laughter.
â"How was I supposed to know that it was a Domain Expansion!? Didn't even look like one!"
âSatoru swears his heart skipped a beat when he heard you laugh.
âHe was busy drowning in your presence, in your warmth. He didn't know why his stomach was fluttering, why he felt his eyes naturally gravitate towards you. It just did.
âSatoru realizes he wants this. He wants more late-afternoon ice cream runs with you; he wants your laughs, to be the one to cause them; he wants to keep being the one to barge into your dorm room and lay on top of you until you start to complain about how heavy he is.
âYou make him feel alive, you fill him with things to look forward to. He was finally looking past today and tomorrow.
âSatoru wants to be alive.
âAnd he wants the reason to be you.
â"Satoru?" You turned towards him, noticing how silent he's been.
âHe snaps out of it quickly, "Your ice cream is melting." He says, casually.
â"Shit!" You hiss, only now realizing the ice cream was indeed dripping down your fingers, turning the grooves sticky. You reached for the napkin to wipe it off.
âSatoru's ears turned a deep red and heat crawled up his neck when you weren't looking. You almost caught him looking at you like an absolute fool.
âHe was a complete idiot when it came to love.
â
â"I think I like her." Satoru says to Geto and Shoko as they loitered in his dorm room. There was a deep furrow in his brows and a faint dust of pink on his cheeks as he anticipated their reactions.
âGeto and Shoko look at him blankly.
â"Congrats, you're the last one to know." Geto responds. Shoko throws another chip into her mouth as if he didn't just admit something that took immense bravery.
â"What?!" Satoru exclaims, sitting up on the bed.
â"Come on, Satoru, everyone sees how you look at her." Geto continues, one leg thrown over the other as he flipped through a magazine. Satoru's office chair creaked slightly as Geto idly spun around in it.
âSatoru stares at his friend like he grew a third head all the way from the bed.
â"How I look at her? What are you even talking about?"
âShoko chimes in, "You look at her like she's everything you've ever wanted." The potato chip bag crinkles as her hand digs in for more.
â"I do not look at her that way," Satoru huffs. After a second, his voice is significantly softer, "Do I?"
â"Yes, you do." Both of his friends answered in unison.
âSatoru groans, falling onto his bed and burying his face into a pillow. "Do you think she notices?"
âShoko shrugs, "I think she's just as in denial as you are."
â"Or she isn't into you." Geto snickers.
âThe white-haired teenager lets out a pathetic whimper at that. Shoko rolls her eyes, chewing on a chip.
â"Don't listen to him, Satoru." She says.
âHis head flops on his pillow as he turns to Shoko who was sitting on the floor, "Does she tell you anything?"
â"Not a peep." Shoko answers but she knows. It was easy to lie to Satoruâa part of her wanted to see if he was going to man up and act on his feelings.
âHe groans again, out of pure frustration. He didn't know where these emotions were meant to go and what he was supposed to do with them.
âHe doesn't know what he'd do in the event that you hate him and decide that you want nothing to do with him.
âEven if you did like him back, he still doesn't know what he'd do.
â"She's too perfect. Her smile, the way she laughsâspeaking of which, how do you make a girl smile? And the way she eats kikufuku mochiâ" He rambles, heart spilling out of his mouth in an adoring daze. His soul had your face plastered on it, memorizing each small detail.
âGeto throws his head back onto the office chair while Shoko groans loudly.
â"If you're going to be this disgusting, I'm leaving." Shoko grumbled.
âSatoru couldn't be bothered. A stupid, lovesick smile stayed steady on his face as he imagined scenarios with you.
â
â
âOnce Satoru put a name to the feeling, he was becoming acutely aware of his actions and well, you.
âThere were things he noticed that he didn't beforeâlike when rooms were too loud, you'd go quiet and that'd become his cue to lead you away; the way your nose crinkles when you smile widely; and how you like to lay down on cold floors after training.
âIjichi was driving the car to the mission location, trying to block out the sound his ears were unfortunately absorbing.
â"You look so stupid here!" You laughed, pointing at the printed photos in his hands. Your cheek was practically against his shoulder.
âHe tried not to make it obvious how your touch was affecting him. Each time your fingers accidentally brushed against his, he'd feel sparks igniting along his skin.
âWhen he noted your aroma, his stomach bubbled with a strange feeling. He found himself leaning towards you and the surprising comfort he felt when you were near.
â"I think the word you're looking for is devastatingly handsome." He retorted, trying to ignore the demanding feelings you elicited. He shuffled through the photos he had processed at a shop in Tokyo with nimble fingers.
âA particular bad angle of his face and Haibara had you hollering with laughter. Angle from below, taken without any preparation from the subjects.
â"This isâ" You gasped in between laughs, "This is the best photo!" Your voice cracked at the end before another round of cackles. The sides of your torso began to complain because of how much you were laughing.
âSatoru couldn't bring himself to laugh with you.
âThere was that soft smile on his face, just watching you.
âOnce you caught his expression, your heart responded by pounding against your chest. The laughter died down to soft chuckles then to nothing.
â"Don't look at me like that." You murmured, flustered. A sudden burning sensation seared across your cheeks and your throat tightened.
â"Like what?" He asks.
âThe words died in your throat. "Likeâ" You could feel your cheeks flaring, "LikeâI don't know... Just stop looking stupid." You ended up grumbling.
âSatoru huffed out a loud bark of laughter. "Maybe you should stop looking so adorable." He poked your side. Casual.
âThe both of you stopped.
âHe stilled, it was as if someone poured cold water all over him. Satoru's face turned beet-red almost immediately.
âDid... Did Satoru just call you adorable? Had your body not reminded you of how loud your heart was, you were sure you were in heaven. Sweat formed at your palms.
âSeeing the pink on his cheeks made you look away from him because it only established the truthâthat Satoru actually called you adorable and meant it.
âThe playful air that swam in the car was put on a pauseâreplaced by stiff shoulders and hands adhered to knees. Ijichi looked at the rearview mirror. He bit back a smile. Young love, he thought.
âSatoru's finger hovered over the window button on the car door. If it weren't for the mission, he'd already jumped out and hoped for the impact to take him.
â"A-Anyways..." Satoru forced a cough, dragging his attention back to the photos in his hand.
â"Nanami should have never gotten that haircut." Satoru let out a wispy laugh, attempting to wash away the rigidity he caused by acting cool. Even though internally, he was burning himself at the stake.
â"Y-Yeah." You gulped, turning to look at the photos once again.
âThough the two of you kept commenting, chatting, and laughing about the photos, both your minds were far far away.
â
âThe car jerked to a halt, stopping in front of the all-too-familiar shrine shrouded by the dark night. "We've made it back to the school, Gojo-san," Ijichi announced, busy pulling the stick shift to park.
âThe assistant's eyes drifted to the rearview mirror. "I'll be sure to report the mission's succesâ"
âGojo pressed an index finger to his lips. On his shoulder, you had fallen asleep. The drive to and from the mission was quite long.
The white-haired sorcerer seemed a lot more serious than the usual playful personality he displayed.
âIjichi, a little startled, nodded in apologetic understanding.
âHours ago, when your head fell onto Satoru's shoulder after trying to fight sleep, his whole body froze. His hands were curled into tight fists on his lap, knuckles turning white.
âDon't move. Don't move. Don't move. Were the only two words he kept repeating himself throughout the ride. He tried to act naturalâworried that you could somehow sense his stiffness in your sleep.
âHe was even more wrecked when you murmured in your sleep and further curled up against him. He tried to calm his heart in fear of you hearing it.
âEventually, it ended up with your nose against his neck, face buried into the junction where his neck met his shoulder.
âIjichi quietly opened the driver's side door and exited with the goal to assist the young white-haired sorcerer. The assistant rounded the car and pulled open the passenger door, exerting great caution not to jostle or create noise.
âSatoru took a second to look at you before carefully hooking his arm under your knees. One long leg exited the car first, followed by the rest of his body and you in his arms.
âHe adjusted your frame to rest comfortably in his grasp. Your cheek pressed against his chest, hair free from your face. He paused, allowing himself to admire you.
âSoft, quiet snores, eyelashes fluttered shut, face muscles smoothened out like you had no worry at all.
âBecause you did. You'd never have to worry if Satoru were thereâhe'd make sure of it.
âHe gives a low thanks to Ijichi before entering the school premises. Cicadas buzzed somewhere in the distance, the gravel crackling under Satoru's feet as he was en route to the student dormitories.
âThe old lanterns posted along the gravel pathways were the only lights around the space. The gentle sloshing of the pond and beating of the bamboo fountain whispered lullabies into your ears.
âYour face pressed against Satoru's chest, soft sighs escaping the small part in your lips. Satoru's heart skipped a beat and his body responded by hugging you closer to him.
âSatoru didn't know a single thing about love.
âBut there was something he was sure ofâHe wouldn't mind shouldering the burdens of the world if it meant he could hold you like this.
â"Was that..." Haibara stuttered, wide eyes peering over a corner. He watched as Satoru carried you to your room.
â"Don't say anything." Nanami said in a quiet tone, half-hoping Satoru didn't hear anythingâbut with his Six Eyes ability, nothing could ever escape him.
âNanami's hand clamped down onto Haibara's collar that shielded his nape, "Let's go." The blonde dragged his friend who was kicking and whisper-yelling at him to let go.
â
â"Satoru what?!" You dropped the half-eaten sandwich, the fillings spilling out onto the concrete. Your jaw had fallen with the snack.
âShoko bent down to collect the drink the vending machine dispensed. "You don't remember? You must have been knocked out cold." She says, carrying a teasing tone despite her weary voice.
â"No... I don't remember anything." You gulped, red flushing your face. You quickly picked up the food you dropped.
âTruthfully, you did remember a part of itâbut you weren't sure if it was a dream or not. Satoru had been appearing in your dreams a bit more frequently the past few days but you didn't think anything of it.
âShoko straightened up, popping the can open, "God, you're just as oblivious as him."
âAs Shoko began to head down the open corridor with you while rattling on about something that happened in Kyoto, your attention was far from the conversation.
â
âIt happened on a day that was too ordinary.
âSatoru began to ignore you.
âHe wasn't there to incessantly knock on your door when the sun was barely up; he wasn't pestering you about joining his afternoon dessert runs anymore; and he didn't hover over you like he did before.
âAlthough he still did interact with you, it was minimal enough for you to notice his absence.
âWhenever you'd finish training and seat yourself on a bench, you found yourself looking behind you, expecting a cool towel to land on your shoulders and his cocky grin lingering above you.
âBut it never came.
âWhenever you had a free afternoon schedule, you'd keep it openâgoing as far as to decline shopping invitations from Shoko and late lunches with Nanami and Haibara.
âThen your heart would chip when you find Satoru messing around in the gardens with Geto, Utahime, and every person except you instead.
âSatoru's life had far more important people. His life doesn't revolve around you.
âBut even then, you'd stupidly expect. Although a major part of you had begun to give up the hope that he'd ever approach you again like before, a piece of you still blindly believed.
âAnd so, your afternoons were perpetually available.
âAs the days passed, you reduced your expectations. All you began to hope for was a mere greetingâa Hi or a Hello whenever you'd pass by each other. Not the smile and nod that he'd give you that left you wondering if him saying Hi to you was too much.
âRealistic. The brain was placed above the heart for a reason.
âSatoru Gojo wasn't exclusively yours so you had no right to demand anything from him. Not even a simple smile or a greeting.
âBut that didn't stop the ache in your chest.
âYou hated how it took his absence to make you realize you loved him.
âIn crowded rooms, you realized that he was the first person your eyes would settle on; in dessert shops, you caught yourself buying extra sweets to bring back to the dorms just in case he'd want some.
â
âToday, you were going to give him a piece of your mind!
âYou weren't the type to sulk and wait for him to approach you first. You fought for what you thought was right, you didn't know how to give up.
â"Here alone?" The young patissier softly chimed, a small chuckle accompanying his words as he wiped his hands on his apron.
âHis surprise isn't unwarranted, you only came here with Satoru. It was a relatively small dessert shop, a hidden gem obscured by the gigantic shops in Tokyo.
âAn array of desserts lined up within the glass encasing. Colorful and perfectly madeâthe desserts themselves were evidence of the promising patissier's skill.
âYou nodded with a smile. You tried not to show how your heart dropped a little, "Just me today."
â"The regular?" He asks, sidestepping to the transparent case display that housed the sweets.
â"Just the box of mochi this time." You watched as he reached into the case, carefully collecting the sweets.
âHe returns to the counter, presenting to you the box. He opens it, revealing mochi flavors you've never seen before.
â"Would you like to try the new flavors? I'm experimenting with more unique and expensive tastes." He asks, "Since you're a regular, I'll only ask for the base price."
âIf there was anything that could fix you and Satoru's friendship, it would certainly be a box of expensive mochi. Even if it did drain what was left of your pocket money.
â"I'll take it."
â
âArmed with 6 pieces of mochi of assorted variety, your subsequent goal was to find Gojo Satoru.
âYou spot a flash of white by the garden through the window. You quickly pad down the hall, nerves a little on fire.
âAs the door to the garden approached you, a familiar cocky voice echoed from the garden into the hallway.
â"Ignoring her? I'm not ignoring her." It was Gojo's voice, a little muffled as if his cheeks were stuffed full.
â"Right. Because what you're doing is the complete opposite of ignoring." Geto chuckles lowly.
âSatoru knows you're near, cursed energy that he was all too familiar with running down the hallway. He mustn't be harsh, he consciously thought.
â"I don't see her for a couple of days and suddenly I'm avoiding her." He says, coolly and with that teasing lilt that comes off as boastful. "Can't I be busy?"
âYour throat tightened and the motivated will in your chest dimmed.
â"That's low, Satoru." Shoko's voice follows.
â"She can have fun by herself."
âSuddenly, the hall begins to appear a little too big and too hostile. Right, he's just busy. It's not intentional. Ignoring you for the past few days isn't intentional.
âThe box of mochi was forgotten in your hands as you turned a heel and walked away.
âGojo exhales after he feels your cursed energy retreating. But the relief didn't last long when he felt Shoko's harsh slap on his shoulder. "Ow! What was that for?!"
â"That's for being a jackass."
â
â
âEvery time Satoru had something to request from you, it was met with a yes from you. You showed up, you waited for him, and you didn't bother him.
âEven when you desperately wanted to say no, you were still there. Maybe being softer was better. Maybe someone easier to get along with.
âYou lost sleep at night, spending hours reviewing the moments leading up to the day you finally realized he was avoiding you.
âMaybe you overstepped your boundariesâacted too friendly when you weren't on that level with him.
âMaybe you laughed too loudâyou knew your laugh wasn't as gentle as others. Maybe he found it annoying? Maybe you talked too much without realizing.
âRepeating the thoughts worries only sparked terrified horror.
âWhen he talked to you, it was out of necessity. Missions, Yaga's instructions, and reports were the only topics he'd talk to you about. And of course, you weren't going to talk to him first.
âBecause if you did, what if he'd hate you more than he already does?
âWhat solidified it for you was yesterday's conversation.
â
âYou tried not to break mid-conversation as you wondered what you did to make him stop talking about ice cream flavors and opt for mission briefings instead.
â"That'll be all, [Last Name]."
âYou lifted your head in surprise. Maybe your emotions accidentally showed on your face because his expression softened for a moment before locking into place and promptly exiting the room without looking back.
âNot sweetheart?
âWhat did you do? Was it because you were too late?
âYour bottom lip wobbled as the mission papers in your hands fell to the ground from your loose grip.
â"Ah..." The small broken gasp unconsciously left your lips. You knelt down onto the ground.
âBefore you could register it, your vision blurred and throat tightened impossibly. There were wet circles on the papers. You slowly collected them with shaking hands.
âWith the back of your free hand, you pathetically wiped your eyes, dampening the edge of the sleeve.
âTears continued to roll downâdays of trying to keep it together crashing down in one moment. You knocked the heel of your palm against your temple in punishment, "Why do you have to mess everything up." You wobbly admonished.
âMaybe you weren't as important to him as he was to you.
âAnd the worst part, you missed your best friend.
â
â"Heard Y/N's transferring to our sister school." Shoko gossiped, a cigarette with a burning tip tucked between her fingers.
âThe only sound that followed was the basketball falling through the hoop and onto the ground, an echoing bounce in the large gymnasium.
â"Kyoto?" Geto asked, jogging to get the basketball. Once his palm made contact with the ball, he dribbled it while his eyes trained on the hoop.
â"Why's she transferring?" He asked as he leapt and shot the ball perfectly into the rim.
âShoko took a puff of her cigarette, smoke rushing out of her lips. "Don't know. Didn't really ask. But if I had to say, it's probably because of the rising cases of curses in the Kyoto area."
âShe crosses her legs as she sits on the ground, back against a wall, "You know the Jujutsu High in Kyoto doesn't really have much students."
â"It's not like we're a lot either." Satoru gruffly says, stealing the ball from Geto. Their shoes squeaked on the polished flooring as they competed against each other.
âShoko eyes her white-haired friend. "Yeah, but Kyoto needs it more than we do." She tips her head back onto the wall, watching the smoke fizzle from her cigarette.
â"When's she leaving?" Geto asks, bumping into Satoru's shoulder as he defends the ball in his hands.
â"Tomorrow morning, I think." Shoko sighs, "It'll be lonely without another girl here."
âShoko's head lolls to the side lightly, "Hey Satoru." She calls out.
â"You aren't bothered by any of this?" She asks, calm and casual. The smoke from her cigarette wisping into the wind.
âSatoru shifts his focus to the movements of the ball entirely.
â"Not at all."
â
âThe ball was left in the court, unmoving. The sun hung low in the sky before it finally dipped under the horizon.
âSatoru stayed in the garden, in a black sweatshirt and loose pants. He sat on a benchânothing but the cold breeze and the buzzing cicadas accompanied him.
âSatoru did not know anything about love.
âYour face from the other day was his personal nightmare. The day he made the active decision to call you by your last name.
âThe way your quiet expression loudly crumbled in front of him made instant regret pulse wrongly in his chest. Your eyes had looked up at him, wide and broken; your jaw loosened, exposing the breaths that thinned.
âHe ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
âHe got what he wanted. He pushed you away.
âSo why did it feel like someone was ripping his heart out?
âThe festering ache that settled low in his soul gnawed at every waking thought he held in his head. His days felt incomplete.
âSatoru was a coward. An absolute coward, afraid of himself.
âHe tips his head back onto the tree rooted behind him, breathing in the cold air. Despite the solitude, he was never really aloneâhe was with the ghost of you.
âThat night where he carried you from the car, opened your door and carefully closed it with one foot, he realized he didn't know anything about being gentle.
âBut when it was you, learning to be gentle came easy to him.
â
âHe placed you down on your bed gently, minding your limbs. He adjusts your legs on the bed, organizes your arms, and even fixes your hair so it wouldn't bother you.
âThen with the same care, he slowly undid your shoes and slipped them off your feet. Despite all his actions, you never stirred awake onceâeven when he accidentally placed your head a little too fast onto the pillow and when his hand slipped and landed on your ankle a little too hard while he tried to undo your laces.
âSo, imagine his confusion when you held onto the hem of his uniform when he was just about to leave.
â"Stay." You murmured, the word slurred with sleep.
âSatoru froze.
âThe silence of the room only amplified hastening beats in his throat, threatening to leap from his mouth. He turned awkwardly, unsure.
â"Are you awake, sweetheart?" He asked, crouching down to your level on the bed.
âA lock of your hair cascaded from your ear to your cheek. Satoru's body was taut but your eyes remained fluttered shut.
âHe stared at the misplaced piece of hair like it was his personal enemy.
âWithout missing a beat, he lifted his hand. But before his fingers grazed your face, he reigned himself back.
âHe didn't have the right to touch you.
âAlthough it was to make sure you were comfortable, he'd be lying if he said his intentions were purely just for you. He wanted to feel the plumpness of your cheek with his fingertips, to bask in the electrifying feeling that came with the contact.
âSelfish. He called himself.
âThe lump in his throat became suffocating and his mouth dusted dry at the impulsive thought.
âIt was as if you answered for him. You turned and your cheek unconsciously landed on his palmâbarely cupping it.
âHis lips parted slightly. You were so delicate in his eyes, something to admire. He revelled in the softness of your cheek against his palm. Even mochi wasn't as soft as you.
âIt was as if Satoru stopped breathing.
â"Sweetheart," He whispered, heart thrumming with something that ate at him, "You're killing me."
âHis thumb, daringly, ran along your cheek in a slightly shaky manner. He used to dream of this scenarioâwhat it would be like to hold your face in his hands. He always carried the thought of what your skin would feel like.
âSatoru fully sat on the floor beside your bed. He laid his chin on the edge of the bed, simply addicted to the way your presence made him feel alive.
âHe sighed, eyes gazing at you with a softness only you could ever arouse from him. The cerulean in them transformed into love lettersâa secret language that only you'd be able to understand.
â"I'm too selfish, sweetheart," He whispers, shamelessly running his thumb near your eyelashes, "Because all I want is to be with you. Just me."
â"It scares me. I've never loved anyone as much as I love you," He admits, eyes steady on your sleeping face, "Scratch thatâI've never loved anyone."
âSatoru's forehead falls onto the edge of the bed.
"Dunno' what it's like." âMuffled and murmured, he asks, "Would you still accept me with all the burdens I carry?"
âSomehow, your presence soothes the deepest aches in him. And he falls asleepârare because sleep only came when safety preceded it.
âSatoru stayed until midnight.
â
â
âUnder a different night sky, he was detached from youâcompletely. The past week without you carved a ravine in his soul.
âSatoru couldn't fathom a life without you anymore. He only realized the cold after experiencing your warmth.
âWhat was he supposed to do?
âYou were leaving tomorrow morning. If you left and he stayed in the garden like a middle school child, he'd lose every and any chance at ever getting close to you again.
âCould he handle that? A life without your smile, without you calling him an idiot, without you randomly jumping onto his back while he immediately hooks his hands under your knees.
âHe's survived hundreds of life-threatening things since he was a childâassassination attempts, special grade curses, you name it.
âHe never had anything to lose. But now, he did. You.
âThe thought of remembering only the ghost of you in each dessert and car ride without you beside him terrifies him. What if he begins to miss you for the rest of his life?
âHis life was dangerous. To pursue you while disregarding other facets would be naiveâthe Gojo Clan, the eyes that kept watching him, the thoughts in his head.
âHe thinks he won't be able to handle it if you got hurt because of him.
âBut the concept of you finding another person wrecks him. He wants to be selfish; God, he wants to be selfish so badly, to take you into his arms and forget about the world.
âMaybe that's why he finds himself sprinting across the premises.
â
âBreathless, Satoru first spots boxes of your things stacked outside your dorm room. His heart falls to his feet.
âHe doesn't break his sprint, he continues to your door. He senses your energy just by the entryway.
â"Y/N!" He exclaims.
âExcept the dramatic scene he imagined in his head didn't turn out exactly as he planned.
âHe didn't take into account how slippery the floor was. He slid past your doorway, catching a glimpse of your figure, before slamming down onto the hardwood.
â"Satoru?!" Your eyes blew open. You immediately dropped the box in your hands and ran to the doorframe.
âHands gripping the frame, you leaned outside to spot your white-haired senior on the ground, groaning. Just as you were about to help him up, he lifts his palm towards you.
â"I'm fine." He says, standing up casually.
âWhat a recovery. He thanks himself. No, now's not the time.
â"Are you sure? That was a pretty harsh fall." You commented. Your heart picked up slowly as he neared your door.
â"I hope you know you're speaking to the strongest sorcerer right now." His smile was toothy but it never quite reached his eyes.
âYour eyebrows pinched together, "Satoru." You sighed, "What are you doing here?"
â"If it's about the mission reports, I already revised and sent them to Yaâ"
â"I'm not here for the mission reports." His voice is low. Quiet. It's not a command but not a plea either, something caught in between the two.
âYou hated yourself for the butterflies that flapped in your stomach, an enemy to the puffiness of your eyes.
â"I'm here because," He started. Suddenly, his words died in his throat.
âHe finally had you in front of him. An invisible tug in his chest screamed at him to say something, anything.
â"I'm a complete fool." Satoru says, "An absolute idiot. The worst of the worst. Shoko says my brain is the size of a pea but I think it's the size of a moâ"
â"Satoru." You firmly interrupted his rambling.
â"What I mean to say is," There's a flush in his cheeks and you notice how tired his eyes have become. "I miss you and I'm sorry."
â"And I'm stupid for avoiding you."
âSo he really was avoiding you for the past week. The sudden grimness that befalls on your face doesn't go unnoticed by Satoru.
âHis throat hesitates, words too shy to leave his open mouth. âHis visage is caught between looking like he wants to kiss you and a wince. An internal warfare that manifests in furrowed brows and a tense jaw.
âThen suddenly, it looks like he gives up fighting.
â"I love you." Satoru says.
âIt came out quiet at first. You could barely hear it. But you did, the words ran along the rims of your ears before sinking inâit didn't take long for the noise in your head to succumb to the beat of your heart.
â"I love you." He echoes, more sure, certain.
â"I'm a coward," He begins, hands bracing on your entryway, "I overthink. I run away and laugh it off, pretending nothing bothers me."
â"I'm selfish, I'm greedy. I never realized until I met you. With each moment spent with you, I keep wanting moreâmore of you, more of our silly banters. And when I do get what I want, I selfishly and greedily want more than that."
â"I'm inherently flawed. My family consists of practically no one. There's an unfathomable amount of money for my head." He continues, "People try to kill meâall of them fail, of course but still..."
â"I don't know a single thing about love, I ruin good things for myself, and I'm never steady."
â"But if there's one thing I'm sure about," His gaze bores into yours, "It's that I can take on anything as long as you're with me."
âThe resolve in his eyes is strong, grounded, "I swear I will protect you. I won't let anyone touch a single hair on your head,"
â"I can't promise a normal life with me like other couples." His tone carries regret interwoven in between the words.
âThe gravitational pull between you leads him to put a foot in the door. He's close enough that you can feel his warmth and catch the scent of his cologne.
âSatoru's eyes holds your gaze with an exhilarating intensity, capturing your entirety. He sees through you, connecting beyond the physical realm.
â"But I promise to be in the palm of your hand," He murmurs, sacred just for you, "I promise you me."
â"Would you let me be so selfish and ask you to accept me with all that I am?" It's almost as if he's asking in a plea.
âWhat he didn't expect was you bursting into tears in front of him.
âHe stiffens, eyes wide. "Um!" He panics, his hands immediately detach from the doorframe in his alarm.
âThe white-haired sorcerer stares at you like a deer caught in the headlights. Tears keep rolling down your cheeks as your frown deepens.
âAnd slowly, your frown turns into a shaky laugh. God, he's so stupid.
â"Actually!" He nervously chuckles, "Forget I said anythingâwe can pretend this never happenedâ"
â"I'll get over you. I promiseâactually, no, I take that back. I don't think I ever coâ"
âHis frantic words weren't able to leave his mouth in time because you say,
â"Can I kiss you?"
âSatoru malfunctioned. His face turned cherry red as his heart found the tunnels of his ears. He murmurs a drunken yes, almost turning into vigorous nods, before you crashed your lips onto his.
âYour hands find his sweatshirt, fingers curling along the thick material as you pulled him closer to you. Satoru's hands fly to your waist, lips molded against yours.
âHis hands pull you closer until your chests were pressed against each other's. He could feel the erratic thumping of your heart against his and he knew you could feel his as well.
âYour lips were sweeter than anything his imagination could ever come up with. In one moment, all his fears and worries were drowned outâinstead, he was drowning in you.
âIn between kisses, you whisper against his lips, "I love you too, Satoru." Like a man starved, he dives back in for another kiss.
âYou pull away first, panting slightly. Satoru barely pulls away, as if letting the kiss dance on his lips. The red flush on your cheeks was adorable.
â"You're extremely red." He comments.
â"Shut up."
â"Like wine redâlike burgundy."
â"Satoru, please shut the hell up."
â"Yes, ma'am." He laughs, making a motion to zip his mouth.
âSatoru keeps holding you, "Does this mean I'm your... You know..." His face flushes reddens hard at the attempt to even say it.
âYou giggle, full of emotion, "That depends. Would you like to be my boyfriend, Toru?" You tilt your chin up on his chest.
âHe brushes your hair past your ears, shamelessly and without hesitation. His eyes gleam with an emotion nothing short of adoration.
â"Was my speech not convincing enough? That hurts a little. I practiced it long and hard."
âYou snorted, "You're ruining the moment, Toru."
â"Of course." He answers seriously, "Do you want me to be your boyfriend?"
â"Do you need a written agreement?" You joke, "Yes I do, you idiot."
â"I accept you and everything about you, Satoru." You murmur, hand reaching up to his cheek. He leans into your palm, savoring the ardency of it, like a man dying.
â"If your burdens get heavy, we'll share the load," Your thumb swipes along the skin of his cheek, "Don't worry about me, I'm strong, I'm robust, and far too stubborn to give up." You laughed.
â"If the world says it'll lay hell onto us," You say, "Then I say, bring it on." A confident chuckle escapes you.
âSatoru looks at you like you hung the moonâthe glacial colors in his burned with passion, feverish with the addiction of you.
âHe responds by lowering his head onto your shoulder, nose pressed against your neck.
â"Don't ever leave me, sweetheart."
âYou chuckle and wrap your arms around his shoulders, pressing him closely against you. "Of course, where the hell would I go if not beside you?"
â"Does that mean you're not going to Jujutsu Kyoto anymore?" He asks, looking up at you with puppy-like eyes.
â"Kyoto?" You raise a brow, "Why on earth would I go to Jujutsu Kyoto?"
âHe straightens up, looking at you with a small petulant pout, "Shoko said that you were transferring schools and that you're going to leave tomorrow morâ"
âAs the confusion on your face deepens, he stops. "You're not going to Kyoto, are you?"
âYou shook your head, laughter starting to intensify as your grin swells with amusement. "No, I'm not going to Kyoto, Toru." You answered, barely able to keep from laughing.
âSatoru pulls away, hand trailing from your waist to your fingers instead, intertwining them without realizing. He turns to the boxes outside your room, "Then what's all this?"
âYour laughs turned into chuckles, "They're Shoko's old medical books and notes. I promised to help her sell them tomorrow." You explain, "She doesn't have much space in her room so it's in mine for the time being."
âSatoru's smile turns menacing, "Those bastards played me."
âHe squeezes your hand, leaning in, "But then, I suppose I owe them a little bit." He kisses your cheek.
âThe blush on your cheeks was immediate, "You owe them a lot, Toru." You laughed as he nuzzles into the side of your face.
â"Let's forget about them. I want my girlfriend's attention on me right now." The confession only made Satoru even clingier than before.
âThe word girlfriend seemed so right to him, he loved saying itâbranding your relationship as exclusive, that you're the only one for him. He now had the right to see you shine from beside you instead of from afar.
âLaughter was easy when it was with him. The two of you, a tangle of limbs, move further into your dorm. Satoru shuts the door with his foot.
â"You're such an attention whore," You rolled your eyes.
â"I'm your attention whore now."
â"Unfortunately."
âHe grasps your chin, gently guiding your gaze towards him. You wrap your arms around his neck, unafraid and unapologetic.
â"Well, you now have all my attention," You smiled, faces merely inches apart. "What do you want to say, Satoru?"
â"I'm sorry. And I love you." He whispers like he can't believe that you were in front of him like this, your heartbeat fully in sync with his, eyes looking up at him expectantly.
â"You can give me hell, sweetheart. I deserve it and I can endure it." He murmurs, "Punch me, take all my money, do what you will. If I ever make you feel that way again, don't hesitate to smack me! Put all your force into it too."
âYou chuckled softly, "Then, can I ask you to buy me food from that dessert shop we go to? Takaya-san said he has a lot more flavors now," Your fingers play with the ends of his white hair on his nape.
â"Of course, sweetheart. Anything to make up for me being an absolute fool." He hugs you closer.
âYou sighed, "Love you, Toru." You kissed the underside of his jaw.
âIt was as if someone pulled a piece from Satoru's spine. He leans down and flashes a toothy grin, "Are we about to kiss right now?"
â"You're so stupid."
âGojo Satoru wasn't looking for love but when it arrived in the form of you, he wasn't about to let it go.

âAll this anger was once love.
âSuch a misplaced feeling, garbling and wild, was once a feeling that knew exactly what it was and where it belonged.
âA systemic roiling that flowed in unknown trails always seemed to orbit, finding its way back to pulse and remind the body of its presence.
âHow could anyone believe that something so ugly was once something so beautiful?
âThe Strongest was no stranger to the perpetual chants of his name. He was familiar to being the main subject in every space he filled.
âAnd he was definitely no stranger to being demanded. After all, the name Satoru Gojo was known more as a weapon than as a human being. A new sorcerer could probably believe that he was a cursed tool and not a person.
âThe tall Veil obscured Shibuya and its Halloween celebrations within. To the lay person, it was no more than a weird 'invisible wall'. However, its true globous appearance, pitch-black and anomalous in the natural world, caught the attention of Jujutsu sorcerers.
âIt was also enough to draw Satoru Gojo's attention.
â"Bring Satoru Gojo here!"
â"Hurry!"
â"Who the hell is Satoru Gojo?"
â"Who knows?"
âThe sought-after man entered the Veil. His towering stature scanned through the crowds of heads and costumes. He found it strange that non-sorcerers were hollering his name without even knowing why they were looking for him.
âSomewhere unknown and forgotten in the caverns of Gojo's chest, he found it even more misplaced why he thought his name being uttered without intention was strange.
âBecause there was once a person who called the name Satoru Gojo without any expectation.
âHe blinks out of his thoughts, "Oh, sorry." Gojo says smoothly to the person he hadn't realized had fallen due to his entrance.
âHeaves left Gojo's lips, mixing with the acrid sour smell of metal in the air. The tiles in the subway have been dyed with red akin to the ones on the soles of Gojo's shoes. Death's traces running across the flat planes of the floor and its grooves.
âNon-sorcerers stood rooted in their places, eyes blank and frozen. Parts and corpses of transfigured humans that were killed as fast as they were transformed littered the space.
âGrotesque, discolored limbs were in Gojo's palms. Blood became his personâdripping from the tips of his fingers, splattered on his uniform, sprinkled on his face. Breath after breath left his lips.
âAfter 299 seconds of dismembered body parts spontaneously flying over the heads of the citizens cramped in the narrow subway, there was silence.
âA silence that was equally shocked and horrified.
âAn absence of sound that left a ringing in one's ears and allowed for active awareness of one's heart.
âGojo's eyes never shook, never faltered. Even as he stood victorious in the roaring room he turned silent.
âHis muscles were still taut, tensing with each twitch; his senses attune to every sound and movement; and his Six Eyes remained searching past tens of kilometers.
âNevertheless, this was nothing to him. The numbness in his chest wouldn't allow any sense of glory. Even if the horde had reached tens of thousands, he doubts it would ignite any feeling in himânormally, an average jujutsu sorcerer would have lost against one. There was no longer any feat too great for Satoru Gojo.
âKilling is mundane. Tedious.
âThat's right. Everything is tedious. Everything is expected of him.
âHis snowy white eyelashes curtained his gaze as they fell unfocused onto the floor. The puffs of cold hair blowing into clouds from his mouth turned into soft gusts.
âSo annoying.
âIn the quiet, cursed energy burned on the floor in front of him. A box.
âSuddenly, Gojo's cerulean blue eyes were met with a red one, staring at him and integrated into a wall of stringing flesh.
âIn the one moment he wasn't thinking, this had to appear. His breath sharpened. The eye bore into him, unmovingânot just into his eyes but into something deeper.
âThe gold flecks within the eye's crimson rims continuously searched as if its radiating cursed energy was trying to absorb his person.
âSo annoying and so quiet. Satoru lifted his hands, still carrying the evidence of his victory.
âPerhaps, the silence was a mercy.
â"Hey, Satoru."
âSatoru's heart stopped, its beating echoes fading as its relevance decayed. That voiceâangelic; the voice that simultaneously haunted him for years in fractured wails and the object of all his desires.
âThe voice stayed ringing in his ears, almost as if a cruel kiss to the shell. Gnawing at what was left of the man.
âHis breaths became nothing but sound to him. His blood ran cold.
âA voice he hounded for each night, trying to piece together the leftovers you had left after your death. A voice that was punishing.
âA voice he had lamentably forgotten. Something stirred in his stomach.
âAs his heel turned, as the broken limbs of his victims fell from his fingers...
âAll his anger transformed into what it once had been.
âLove.
âSatoru looked every bit of a man struck down by lightning. The blue in his eyes flaredâelectric and akin to the gentle shine of ocean water in warm summer.
âBecause how... How was his deceased wife standing just a few feet away?
âFor the first time in years, Satoru's feet falteredâforcing him to take a step back with a stagger in his breath. The back of his throat threatens him as it burns, his stomach churning like a rope that kept winding.
âSweat beaded at his neck, his palms, running down his spine. This must be an illusion. No, it most certainly is.
âWith bared teeth and a jaw too slack to be in such a grit, his Six Eyes scanned if it were trueâIf it truly was you standing in front of him, in all your beauty.
âFrom his naked eyes alone, how regrettably it was you. From the way your hair gently framed your face; the locks he used to run his fingers through, its softness he chased in the darkness of his room; the way your smile was ever so soft.
It was a smile you were insecure of but Satoru loved to look at; it was a smile that twisted the knife in his heart every time a breath loosened from him.
âYou were as beautiful as the moment he lost you.
â"Satoru!"
â
âHe was back in your shared house. The house you got shortly after the both of you became of age.
âWarmth. Satoru thought he was wearing a sweater but no, it was simply the warmth of being home.
âHome after a long time.
âHe felt the warmth of the house enveloping himâall he knew after you left were dim lights and half-drawn curtains. The afternoon light bounced off the walls, gleaming through the window panes.
âPicture frames hung along the walls that extended from the entryway. Photos from your first date, your first firework show together... Memories that no one could ever take away from Satoru.
âHe had shattered them all when you were taken from him.
âYour shoes were haphazardly strung along the entryway. They were the pair that Satoru had tried to buy you at least 10 times before you finally agreed.
âAnd now, they were your most loved pair. Whenever he insisted to get you new ones, you'd turn your head away with that pout he loved so much; that's when he knew the conversation was over.
âIt was quiet. But not the quiet of Shibuyaâit was the type of silence that made him search. After a few moments of soaking in the scent of freshly fried tempura, he didn't bother to remove his shoes as he moved further into the house.
âThere must be another end to the tug that pulled Satoru's heart. His pace gradually hastened.
âA hallway where the golden afternoon light bled into, painting soothing hues onto the foyer. His heart picked up at the sweet sounds coming through the walls.
â"Gumi! You should eat a lot because you're a growing boy." You chastised the spiky-haired boy sitting beside you.
âOn the table was an array of dishes you had picked up after returning from your mission. It was a Grade 3 curseâsimple enough that you were able to exorcise it and still pick up both food and Megumi from school.
âMegumi gave you a diluted scowl before answering, "We stopped for ice cream on the way back home. It's your fault I'm full. Tsumiki can have the tempura."
âDespite his grumbling tones, it was never unkind. You could tell by the growing pink hues on the tips of his ears and how he looked away intermittently. He only ever got cross when it was with Satoru, but even then, it was never anger.
âIt didn't take long for you to notice the 6'3 giant in your doorway.
â"Satoru!" You smiled.
âThat smile was a kiss to the endless suffocation Satoru felt. A smile could bring out the real him, uprooting the carefully built character he created over the years. How easily your smile could reduce him to a mess of emotions scared him.
âIt damn near killed him.
âThe way the light pranced in your eyes, the pink colors that crept onto your cheeks that the golden light could never maskâall stole his breath away.
âHis heart skipped a beat with each second you held your smile to himâa smile full of love he couldn't believe was only for him. His shoulders eased at the sight of your form, something weary in his shoulders surrendered to you.
âOh, he was completely yours.
âYou were a dream he can't believe he forgotâyour voice kept ringing in his ears, your eyes engraved into his memory.
âBefore he could process it, his eyes burned and the corners of his mouth tugged down with each shake.
âWhat use was being the strongest when he couldn't protect what was right in front of him?
â"Satoru?" You stood up almost immediately. Even Megumi softened, the prickly kid that he was.
âThere it was. Your ability to see Satoruânot as a tool, not as the Strongest, but as the person who sprawls all over you at night, the person who leaves socks on the floor after promising to pick them up.
âYou made your way towards him, hands already reaching, "I'm sorry! Are you sad because we ate ice cream and didn't include you?" You asked with a badly restrained giggle at the end.
âHe could only focus on how enchanting your smile was. The golden light was made for you, he thought.
âHe missed you terribly, he wanted to say.
â"Satoru."
â
âHe was back in Shibuya, except he was almost brought to his knees by the tight binds of flesh that wrapped around his torso. The cold subway lights on your skin was an uncomfortable antonym to the golden light that had once painted you.
âHis eyes remained a steady burn towards yours despite the unyielding crimson constraints trapping his body.
âSatoru Gojo looked unraveled, heart spilling out of his chest without any restraint nor any attempt to keep it from showing. Kenjaku realized in wicked satisfaction he chose the correct body.
â"What?" Your voice still carried that softness. "Have you forgotten who I am? That makes me a little sad."
âNo. Satoru did not need Six Eyes nor the stitches running along your forehead to confirm that it was you.
âSatoru would know you by gaze aloneâhad he had his eyes ripped out, he'd know you by the sound of your voice; had he lost both, he'd know his favorite scentâyou; if those senses were damned, he'd know you by a mere graze of his fingertips on your skin.
âHe'd know by the tug of his heart, how your presence electrifies the mere soul of himâhow it reduces him to an open bottle of emotions, a boy whose life meant nothing without the knowledge of you.
âNo, Satoru did not need any clues.
âHe knew it wasn't you. No matter what his Six Eyes would tell him.
âHis soul knew that it wasn't you.
âAnger bubbled in his chestâhow dare someone desecrate what was left of you like this? Use you as an instrument for walking, for talking?
âHow dare someone use you as a tool?
âSatoru felt his mouth run dry, brows starting to furrow, "Now I understand what you felt back then." He said with his chest, years of agony beginning to spark.
â
â"Satoru?"
â
âYour sleepy voice found its way to tug on his heartstrings. Satoru, half-way through removing his pajama shirt, turned to you.
âHis pretty girl, sat up on their bed, rubbing her eyes. He chuckled gently, "Sorry, did I wake you?"
âIt was 1:47am, the red numbers burning your eyes. The room was silent except for the sounds of Satoru changing and the gentle hum of the air conditioning.
âThe bed gently whispered your name, a temptation. You sat up, yourâhisâshirt riding up to your stomach. "Where are you going?"
â"Yaga called," Satoru sighed, slipping on his uniform. The dark blue clung to his complexion, highlighting the glacial lakes in his eyes despite the dim lighting, "A Grade 1 curse suddenly appeared in Kyoto and all Grade 1 sorcerers are dispatched on other missions as of right now."
â"Kyoto?" You sat up straighter. "Toru, that's too far."
â"I'll be back by tomorrow evening."
â"Toru, you've barely had 2 hours of sleep. The only rest you've had since your last mission."
â"I'll wrap it up quickly so I can get home faster." He says with that feigned teasing lilt.
â"Toru."
âSatoru was using his usual humor and charm to mask the feelings that he knew all too wellâalmost to the point of seeking comfort in them. You were familiar when this happened; his smile never quite reached his eyes.
âYour brows furrowed, cheek bit from the inside.
âAs Satoru buttoned his uniform, he suddenly first felt a pair of arms wrapping around his waist, the touch lingering on his skin. Then he smelled your scentâlike warm cotton, a breath of fresh air. Then he felt your chest pressed against his back.
â"You're not a tool, Satoru." You whispered in the dark room, grounding. His shoulders eased and his eyes fell in contemplation.
âYour hands gripped onto the front of his uniform from behind, knuckles turning white.
â"You're more than your techniques, more than whatever people need you for. Not a weapon."
â"You're not something they can just... They can justâ" The words caught up in your throat, trying to make it out of the lump that prevented them from leaving.
âHe turned in your hold, his face gazing down at you with eyes full of pure love, his features softened into adoration. A gentle chill pricked at your cheeks as he cupped them.
â"I know, baby." He murmured. His thumb went to wipe the tear of frustration that managed to escape the corner of your eye.
â"I'm sorry," You sniffled, planting your forehead against his chest. The gentle thump in his chest was a soothing balm to your weary soul, "I'm angry that people only ever see you as someone who can clean up messes."
â"I know you're reliable but you're a person too," You held onto the back of his shirt. His fingers threaded through your hair, "You're my person."
â"So please, Toru." You lifted your face from his chest and it almost broke Satoru's resolve immediately. Those glassy eyes that were pleading with himâbegging. "Let me be selfish. Entertain my selfishness." You whispered.
â"Choose yourself, Toru." You cried in your dim bedroom, holding onto his shirt like you were afraid he might just disappear and wearing his shirt as if you were already longing for his presence.
â"Come back to bed with me?"Â
âIf only you knew then how much he needed that embrace, those words. In that moment, he wasn't the Strongest, he was simply Satoru.
âChoose yourself. Your wishes weren't for your own desires but for his. For his well-being, for his own happinessâto indulge without anyone's eyes on him.
âHe did not return to bed that night.
âAnd how much he regretted it. And all those nights where he left you cold and alone.
âOnly now does he understand how it felt to have an empty side of the bed.
â
â
âSatoru did not show up to training or to the school for a week after the funeral. He was no more than a corpseâsurviving but not living.
âThe three newest students of Jujutsu High Tokyo stood in front of Satoru's door. The front lawn had overgrown weeds, flowers that were usually blooming with life bent at the stem and were drained from any color.
â"I think," Megumi began with a difficult tightening of his throat, "I'll do this alone."
âYuji and Nobara looked at Megumi with a slight furrow in their brows, lips pursed for a few beats.
âA hand clamped down on the boy's shoulder, "We'll leave it to you." Yuji affirmed, knowing how delicate this situation was.
âMegumi nodded. Once the pair retreated to the sidewalk in front of the house, Megumi reached the patio. The password to the door's lock was still that ordinary dateâSatoru didn't change it.
Only Satoru and you knew that the ordinary date was actually the day when you told him you loved him.
âIt was as if a tornado entered the home. Shattered pieces of glass were on the ground, a few pieces had flown to the entryway. Pictures ripped out of their frames, the wood broken.
âSatoru's shoes were left haphazardly in the doorwayâthe shoes from the funeral, Megumi recognized. The coat stand was on the ground, drowning in Satoru's thick black coat. It was as if he hung it and didn't bother when it crashed.
âMegumi's eyes drifted to the white haired man on the couch. The only source of light was the sun from the slight crack in the curtains, though it was nothing compared to the dimness that casted across the house.
âSatoru was awake. Still in the clothes from the funeralâtie loosened, shirt crinkled. His eyes were heavy but not with sleep.
âThe spiky-haired boy carefully made his way to the kitchen where he knew you kept the broom. Satoru did not move once.
âIn between Satoru's fingers was a photo of you. On the coffee table in front of him were papers: from the funeral services, the title of the space he boughtâa beautiful garden you once thought would be the perfect place to restâand the death certificate.
âHe had bought the land itself. Paid the full amount on the same day. And it killed him because he never thought it would be so soon.
âHe thinks he hasn't spoken ever since that day.
âSatoru heard the sweeping of a broom and the clinking of the glass shards behind himâperhaps the only sound that interrupted the noise in his head.
â"Megumi." His voice was low and rough from disuse.
âStill, glass kept clinking followed by Megumi's footsteps back to the kitchen. Faintly, there was the sound of plastic rustling from the bin. Satoru didn't bother to get angry or tell him off.
âMegumi retreated back into the living room. His eyes scan Satoru's countenance. His cheeks were slightly hollow with the skin housing dried trails; the skin began to split on his lips; his eyes were bursting with red; his hair stuck up and fell in different directions, like he had pulled on them.
âMegumi's brows knitted together, an uncomfortable bubble in his chest.
âSatoru did not look up at him even if the boy were only a mere few steps away. He kept his unfocused gaze steady on the photo in his hands, thumb running along your face as if willpower alone was enough to make him feel the gentle slope of your nose.
âThere was a stretch of silence. Both parties unmoving, unspoken words hanging heavy in between them. What could Megumi say to a man who was so convinced it was his fault?
â"We should clean up, Megumi." Megumi perked up to the sound of Satoru's voice, startled.
â"You know she likes coming back to a clean house." Satoru murmured, leaning back into the couch sluggishly. His voice was scratchy, fraying at the edges of syllables.
âThe depression in between Megumi's brows deepened in confusion.
â"The jet lag from overseas missions is no joke, after all," Satoru sighed, "I'll make sure her favorite pajamas are ready."
âMegumi's heart sank to his toes.
â"Gotta' pick up groceries. Food's going bad in the fridge." He listed, as if it were a normal Sunday.
âSatoru kept telling himself you were merely away on a mission. You'll come back.
âMegumi's vision starts to blur, a sharp intake of air drew in between his teeth. His head bows slightly, unable to look at his father figure in this state.
âIs that what he has been doing all this time? Pretending that you were just in another place?
âSlowly, Megumi sat beside Satoru. He swears he can still feel your presence here. You used to occupy this couch, watching shows with him whilst you waited for Satoru to return home.
âBut home, Megumi had come to realize, wasn't the four walls with a roof he used to think of. Home was a person. Home was when Satoru carried a younger version of him from the car to the bed; your soft kisses that followed on his forehead when you thought he was sleeping.
Home was when he'd find his school uniform stitched up and fixed after a brawl at school.
âWith his shoulder touching with Satoru's, silent tears ran down Megumi's face.
â"Yes, Gojo-sensei." He responded with a small shake in his voice. He made a mental note to clean the refrigerator.
â
â
âNo matter how much anger burned through Satoru's veins as he glared at Kenjakuâat youâhe couldn't act on it.
âDespite his rage, it was still you. Even the image of you weakens himâand he could never hurt you. How could he hurt the face he spent hours mapping with his fingers? The face that smiled at the mere thought of him? The lips he used to kiss and whisper cheesy romantic lines against?
âThe anger that circulated in his body was once love.
âSatoru's love for you was what resulted in him getting sealed in the Prison Realm. He'd damn the whole world if it meant getting another chance to see you, even a mere glimpse of you.
âHe chose himself this time. Selfishly, oh so selfishly.
âBecause love is the glance that Orpheus made to look at Eurydiceâthe same sin Satoru willingly made.
âYour love wasn't meant to be spoken of in simple words, not remembered through photographs, but experienced. Your love was meant to be felt, Satoru thought.
âAnd that selfish choice to look at you one last time sent Shibuya into hell.
á´á´á´Ęá´Ę'ęą É´á´á´á´: this is my first post on this platform! I haven't explored much of JJK angst with the anime/manga canon universe; in the event that there are existing stories with a similar plot to this one, I apologize for the coincidence and will not hesitate to take this down if it is too similar. Thank u for reading !
