I will forever believe that Thranduil in the books had the same motive for reclaiming Erebor’s white gems that he had in the movies (they were the last memory of his wife in Middle-earth besides Legolas).
I think it’s very possible because, remember, The Hobbit was written entirely by Bilbo, a guy who never really knew Thranduil at all. This is what Bilbo has to say about Thranduil:
"if the elf-king had a weakness it was for treasure, especially for silver and white gems; and though his hoard was rich, was eager for more, since he had not yet as great a treasure as other elf-lords of old."
It’s easy to see why Bilbo would mistakenly assume Thranduil had some kind of greed upon seeing him try to enter Erebor, especially while closely witnessing Thorin’s lowest point.
If Thranduil had a much deeper and more understandable motive, Bilbo had absolutely no way of knowing this. All Bilbo knew for certain, even in retrospect, was that white gems reminded him of Thingol’s desire for the Silmaril, which he undoubtedly knew about from his “Translations from the Elvish.”
Therefore, with some extra bias due to Thranduil imprisoning his friends, he painted an incomplete portrait of the Elvenking in his memoir.
I think Lee Pace, master actor that he is, found in Thranduil what Bilbo Baggins could not.
EXACTLY FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT 🧝♂️
All the reasons why you should hate J*s Verstappen
In 1997 J*s beat up a patron of his kartcenter after he reportedly 'caused a ruckus'.
A year later he beat up the father of a 15 year old kid, because said kid passed him in karting. He left the man with a broken jaw, a crack in his skull and a black eye. (He was followed by the Belgian authorities for this one and they told him that if he, in the next 5 years, had an incident in Belgium again he would be punished)
And then he did have an incident again in 2002 not in Belgium but in Germany. As he fought with one of the audience members of a race.
Then in 2008 he beat up a 19 year old employee of a kartcenter (keep in mind that he was a 36 year old going at a teen) for allegedly pushing Max of a motorcycle. However witnesses claim that the employee never even did this.
The same year his ex-wife, and Max's mother, filed abuse allegations against him. He got a 3 months suspended prison sentence and had to pay a €1650 fine for stalking her. He was spoken free of the abuse allegations, but the judge did note that his messages had a 'threatening undertone'. He is now legally not allowed to contact her anymore.
In 2011 his ex-girlfriend also accused him of abusing her so take that as you will.
A little over a month later J*s was suspected of deliberately trying to hit said ex-girlfriend with his car after both she and his ex-wife confronted him by trying to tell him he should work on his temper.
Then in 2016 he had a fight with his father which ended with J*s pushing his father off the stairs in front of his own home.
Some other things he has done include making his wife and daughter stop karting. Especially grating if you realize that Max his sister was faster than Max at one point.
As well as abandoning a 15 year old Max on a gasstation in Italy and not telling him if he will be back, all because Max lost a karting race (A fucking child in an unknown country of which he doesn't speak the language. How the FUCK can you do that?? What if something HAPPENS?!).
If you know about more things he has done feel free to add them to this post so people can see it in the notes!

the existence of tauriel fills me with a deep rage.
Thranduil's anger was actually beautifully raw in this scene where he is confronted by Tauriel, who was behaving like the child she was (compared to her king). My dear girl, who exactly do you think you are drawing an arrow on your king in front of his own people, and then hurling such an insult as "There is no love in you"?!
Thranduil fans who have theorized endlessly on the facts surrounding Legolas's mother know better. There is tremendous love in the Elvenking's heart, which is why it was then filled with equally tremendous pain when the object of that love was taken from him.
Is Tauriel arguing that there is no love left in him ever since his wife died? Did she not see his face as he surveyed the dead bodies of the Mirkwood elves he led into battle?
Let's review:
It would seem that this was a king who valued the lives of his subjects as though they were all his children, and a good father will not stand for anyone threatening his family. One could fairly argue it was already generous of him to sacrifice as much as he did at that point. Unlike the High Kings of the First Age who lost their entire kingdoms in wars, Thranduil had control over his pride and refused to needlessly give his people up to slaughter. Is that not a form of love? I am not arguing that he made the correct moral choice to refuse further aid, but to say that his refusal to send more elves to fight was because he had "no love" is preposterous and insulting.
And finally, just to stick the nail in the coffin of Tauriel's self-righteous, ignorant accusations, what did Thranduil look like when he said goodbye to his son after letting him walk away from their home?
I do believe that is the face of a father who just gave up his last shred of happiness just so that his son could go seek his own happiness.
Love. Not even the coldest of fronts that he puts up and harsh words he hides behind could deny the obvious proof in his actions.
In conclusion: Tauriel, despite being captain of the guard, raised in Mirkwood, and supposedly a beloved friend of Legolas, knew nothing about her King. The shame is on her alone.
