Thranduil 👑🦌 👑

In The Hobbit, Thranduil is described as the “greatest king” of the Silvan elves, aka Woodelves. In the late Third Age, of all Elven rulers he probably ruled the largest number of people. He was able to field a respectable army. His people successfully defended their realm against incursions of spiders and other threats. He had a secure underground fortress to which his people could retreat at need. His people commanded enough magic that they could defend themselves by enchanting a river. Thranduil was also, at the time of LotR, the only ruler of Elves that used the title “king.” However, his subjects themselves, being Silvanelves, were not as learned, wise, or cultured as those of, say Rivendell.

In and of himself, he was less powerful than several other Elves mentioned in LotR. He was, as far as we know, not sprung from the great royal houses of the Elves—his father Oropher was a Sindarin noble. Lineage means a lot in Tolkien’s universe. His lineage is a lesser one compared to Elrond, Celeborn, Galadriel, Cirdan (a blood relation to Elwe Singollo), and possibly Glorfindel. He does not seem to be accounted among the Wise.

He does not have a Ring of Power and I doubt he was ever considered to be a bearer.

I will forever believe that Thranduil in the books had the same motive for reclaiming Erebor’s white gems that he had in the movies (they were the last memory of his wife in Middle-earth besides Legolas).

I think it’s very possible because, remember, The Hobbit was written entirely by Bilbo, a guy who never really knew Thranduil at all. This is what Bilbo has to say about Thranduil:

"if the elf-king had a weakness it was for treasure, especially for silver and white gems; and though his hoard was rich, was eager for more, since he had not yet as great a treasure as other elf-lords of old."

It’s easy to see why Bilbo would mistakenly assume Thranduil had some kind of greed upon seeing him try to enter Erebor, especially while closely witnessing Thorin’s lowest point.

If Thranduil had a much deeper and more understandable motive, Bilbo had absolutely no way of knowing this. All Bilbo knew for certain, even in retrospect, was that white gems reminded him of Thingol’s desire for the Silmaril, which he undoubtedly knew about from his “Translations from the Elvish.”

Therefore, with some extra bias due to Thranduil imprisoning his friends, he painted an incomplete portrait of the Elvenking in his memoir.

I think Lee Pace, master actor that he is, found in Thranduil what Bilbo Baggins could not.

i finished reading the fellowship of the ring for the first time!!!

• one lasting impression i have is that i love boromir so much. when it started snowing on the mountain, he was so concerned for the halflings, it was so sweet. there were many instances like that where both he and aragorn fiercely defended the hobbits, or carried them, and i may pass away if i think about it too much.

• b-bill… 🥺 i was genuinely so sad for sam to have to send his beloved pony away to certain danger. if i didn’t already know from tumblr tolkien lore that bill lives, i would be really sad right now.

• damn, the movies really did gimli dirty, didn’t they? (don’t get me wrong, i love the movies and i have little to no problems with them) but literally no one wanted to go to moria because they knew how dangerous it was going to be. in the movies, it was like gimli was trying to convince the company to go that way. just a difference i noticed!

• i just put the book down, just now, to come type this bullet point because i needed a breather. i am currently, right now, on the edge of my fucking seat!!! (im laying in bed but you know what i mean)

my heart is beating out of my chest! like, i know what’s gonna happen, but they’re sooo close 😫 imagine never having read the books, and the first movie comes out, and you don’t know that gandalf comes back. that would be so insane/devastating.

• lmfao because of that one post on tumblr “when watching fotr with your friends and the balrog shows up you can tell them, this is where legolas starts screaming in the book” but friends. he’s not screaming. he’s wailing it (honestly valid, i would react the exact same way but for a minute just picture movie legolas wailing upon the arrival of the balrog and tell me that’s not funny).

• i like that we get more detail and interaction with the elves in lorien. book galadriel comes across softer, friendlier, less scary (maybe that’s just because movie galadriel scared me with that one scene when i was younger).

• i kept waiting for boromir to die, and i was like, he’s (tolkien is) running out of time here! how can we get to that part AND adequately say goodbye to him?

when i had like 5 pages left i was like yeah there’s no way. i went to my husband all stressed about it and he told me it doesn’t happen until the second book! i was like ohhhhh, okay.

• i can’t wait to start the two towers! of the movies, it’s my favorite and i’m interested to see how that differs.

I just finished reading TFOTR too and honestly I feel the same way but here's my additions

Haldir is amazing and honestly needed more screen time in the movies. Honestly I want to marry him.

Frodo is not just a damsel in distress in the book,he doesn't stand for bullshit

Merry is much smarter than he was portrayed in the movie,like he figured put Frodo leaving and he had the same amount of time to plan his leave of the shire.

In the movies,Elrond is kind yet brooding, but in the book he's sweet yet full of wisdom "as kind as summer"

Sam is almost like a child to Frodo or a much younger brother in the book, while in the movies he's seen as just a regular friend that just tags along because he cares. It much more than that,he has a weird loyalty that is mostly motivated by admiration and love.

I feel like more should have been spoken about Thranduil when Legolas was introduced. I feel like Elrond sending the Prince of Mirkwood on an adventure to the gates of hell without telling his father,blows my mind.

Gimis grief in the movie was well warranted, I mean Balin was like his older cousin or uncle so he lost his family but no one in the movies cared. But in the book they seem more sympathetic toward Gimli and understanding of his sadness.[he needed a hug😔]

Update: just started the Two Towers and...my sweet baby boi nooooo. I knew it was gonna happen but nothing prepared me with how attached I would get to Boromir. The book is just 10x better....

I imagine when Thranduil finally arrived in Valinor on one of the last ships and reunited with his father, he rushed to find his son upon hearing that Legolas had just lost his closest mortal friend, a dwarf, and was deeply grieving. Thranduil searched and finally found his son alone in a forest. He turned, they looked at each other, and said nothing. Thranduil saw the heartbreak in Legolas’ eyes and suddenly it was all that mattered. A dwarf? So what? This was someone his son cared about, and now his son was devastated. Without a word, Thranduil walked forward, engulfed Legolas in his arms, and held him for a long while.
