i don’t want to be that guy but since this is legit racism pretending to be “woke” …. can i just…
one third of murders in the usa go without so much of a suspect arrested, and the rest tend to be “clearance catches”, where someone is arrested but not necessarily guilty. resolved cases only make up 18% of convictions. annnd… it’s a race thing, with black citizens making up almost half of convictions.
of reported rapes, only 1 in 4 end with an arrest (again, not a conviction). and there’s the matter of untested rape kits which are literally sitting around for years - npr quotes it as “tens of thousands” of kits which are untested. if you’re not angered by that number i don’t know what to tell you. and part of the problem of unreported rape cases comes from the harmful way officers treat victims of rape.
number of cops killed by people in the usa in 2015: 45 number of people killed by cops in the usa in 2015: 986
and before you tell me that 45 shows how highly dangerous that job is:
number of unarmed black citizens shot for living while black in 2015: at least 95 “there are criminals out there and police deal with them so they need guns and violence!” ems (ambulance, emt, etc) professionals are often called into duty at the same time and place as police, often in very scary situations, often where there is just as much threat of violence: and they die for it (65 in 2015) without once expecting you to offer them guns. because they protect and serve. i am sure cops do their job. i’m sure there are good cops. i’m sure if i was scared i would call the cops. but the fact people are mad about the way that cops fail them makes sense to me. they’re public defenders. they work in the eyes of the public. they are not above law, above judgement.
