This reminds me of a subplot I was told I couldn't write into the DTC G.I.Joe comics, featuring a rivalry between a Cheat Commandos Reynold-homage-back team of dopey civilian contractor joes (each with a double specialization, gimmick, and implied accessory tree of boring office stuff) and Cobra's P.R. & Marketing Department.

Because a character on each team going through their gimmick and codename choice was one of those plots, and Major Medusa clearly went through it.

"Viper 13-B4! Congratulations, you've accomplished valor in Cobra / have been diagnosed with a weaponizable special interest / kissed the right ass / gotten a really cool scar and have earned your face and name! Report to the East wing and report to the Fashion Vipers and Dr. Venom for biological experimentation and uniform design."

<pause, speaker crackles again>

"Notice: After the Crystal Ball, Raptor and Dr. Mindbender situations, survivors are no longer allowed to come up with their own gimmicks. You people can't be trusted, which is why we hired you, but it's also why you're going to choose from a preapproved list."
