alright, i’m jumping back into this account after a long hiatus to address this, because i think with fbawtft and the popularity of the gradence ship it needs saying STOP TAGGING YOUR RAPE FICS AS DUB-CON. there’s a lot of confusion about what is and isn’t rape in fanfic (which stems from real life, unfortunately) so let me tell you guys the way i see it rape (or “non-con”) is ANY situation where a character is being coerced, manipulated, or otherwise forced into a sexual situation. even if they give enthusiastic consent at the beginning, if any of those things happen later on - it’s. still. rape. dub-con, on the other hand, is trickier to define. i’ve heard people say it doesn’t exist, that there’s just consensual sex and rape, but i don’t think that’s quite true. for me, how i tend to define dub-con is when consent is given enthusiastically and willingly but one (or both) of the characters have internal doubts about the situation, or the situation itself is out of their control. for example - i will always see the “magic made them do it” and “sex pollen” tropes as dub-con. i am so sick and tired of seeing things tagged as dub-con which then have blatant descriptions of characters in sexual situations they clearly did not (or could not) consent to, are not comfortable with, and were deliberately instigated by the other person. i don’t support censorship. i don’t have a problem with people writing these things for whatever reasons they may have - just please, christ, can we stop calling rape dub-con? it reinforces rape culture and makes me physically ill
