also, when you look at this taymoji, these are two female hands. of course some might say it’s both of taylor’s hands holding the heart but if it was the case the top hand or rather the thumb would face the other way. there’s no way for a person to hold it that way with both tumbs visible to the observer.

Hi! What are your thoughts on hoax? I know you think it’s not a break up song, I was just wondering why. Thanks!

i’m gonna be honest, the first time i listened to it i thought it was a breakup song, but then aaron dessner talked about the album and what he said about hoax made me reevaluate the song in the context of the entire album, specifically its position between peace and the lakes. aaron said that the song is “a recognition that you take on the burden of your partners, your loved ones, and their ups and downs”. to me hoax feels like an admission that there are conflicts that put a strain on their relationship, but i don’t think either one of them is the source of those conflicts, they mainly come from the environment they’re in, and sometimes they make decisions that end up hurting the other as a result of this external pressure, but at the end of the day they’re still together against the rest of the world. this is where i think it’s important to consider the songs that precede and follow hoax, because without them hoax would just be like “this situation is hurting me” and nothing more, but when you add the message in peace and the lakes (“but I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm”, “and you know that I'd swing with you for the fences / sit with you in the trenches” , “I don't belong and, my beloved, neither do you” , “I'm setting off, but not without my muse”) it becomes “this situation is hurting me but we’re in this together and i want to get through this with you”, which makes me think of maathp a little bit.

i know you asked about hoax but since i mentioned peace i just wanted to add that the song makes me think the relationship she’s singing about in exile is not the one we see in peace (and therefore hoax and the lakes as well) because how can she write a song that describes total lack of communication and not understanding each other, the reasons this relationship ended and then write “give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other” about the same thing

do you ever think about how close people are to getting it with their interpretations of mirrorball? or The Archer? or seven? or exile? these songs (the first two in particular) are about navigating the delicacy of a carefully crafted public persona and reputation, of trying to appease and please others while simultaneously experiencing an internal struggle. this kind of a narrative isn’t far from the reality that a closeted individual has to learn to navigate. just look at what kind of emotion these lyrics and quotes exude:
