   “ oh.  you’re -- you’re alright. ”  mera doesn’t know the child well, but she knows of him.  she recognizes him at least.  “ i’m so sorry.  i had -- i had heard some of your group was in metropolis.  i’m... ” mera searches for words that are more gentle than glad to see you alive.  “ we should call flash, to let him know.  he’ll be relieved. ”

ZATANNA.

Clutching an ancient- and quite large- book to her chest with both her arms, Zatanna made a quick beeline to Mera. A warm grin overtook her features, and she automatically tipped her hips and tapped a foot behind the other in a cheeky not quite curtsy- luckily not thrown too off balance by the weighty volume she held. “Hello, Mera. I have something terribly interesting to show you!”

   mera almost laughs at the almost-curtsy.  it’s unnecessary, these days, but mera supposes there was a time that she would have expected some modicum of deference from the justice league.  frankly, some of the ruder ones still rub her the wrong way -- no one’s forgotten a disastrous interaction with guy gardner still.  “ well, i’m terribly interested to see it, ” mera says, hands on her hips.  “ is it a fight of some sort that i’m walking into? ”

     mera has decided that she wants dolphin’s input more often.  there are things about so many of her most trusted confidants which make them exceptional atlanteans -- arthur is of land and sea; garth’s magic and strange history give him a unique insight; mera herself is an outsider.  dolphin, she thinks, has seen all the ugly bits of atlantis and atlanteans.  she is not blinded by love for them, nor duty to them.  she may be the closest mera can come to an impartial opinion.  “ i need your help with a problem i’m facing.  back home. ”  for a moment, a crude approximation of atlantis is formed in water between mera’s hands.  she knows dolphin prefers non-verbal communication, a murky water mera still struggles to navigate sometime.

GARTH.

   garth grins, hunching slightly so it’s easier for mera to kiss his forehead and it makes his whole body warm. “ i’ve been out too long, i kept wally dry the other day and i napped for three hours in the bathtub afterwards, “ he admits, rubbing his eyes. “ trench soldiers? yes please. “ 

    for a moment, mera’s overcome with a sort of affection that used to terrify her.  she thinks sadly that she spent years afraid to think of garth as one of hers because she knows what it feels like to lose a child and doesn’t want to risk it again.  but refusing to acknowledge it to herself doesn’t make things any different.  garth is closer to a son that anything else, and pride makes her heart swell in her chest.  “ arthur and i had a home on land, once -- there’s a nice saltwater pool, of sorts.  you’re welcome to it. ”

     garth shifts uncomfortably under her gaze, knows mera can see right through him. “ i miss when you told me i was a handsome young man, “ he jokes. the man tries to ignore the guilt that comes without saying at the mention of arthur worried about him. “ well, i’ll try to come home soon for a bit then. could probably do with some recharging too. “ 

  mera’s expression does soften a touch at that.  she pats garth’s cheek tenderly.  “ you are a handsome young man, and you look exhausted. ”  she has to stand on her toes to kiss his forehead now -- when did that happen?  “ if you come home, i’ll take you out to fight some trench soldiers with me. ”

    “ you look exhausted. ”  mera puts a hand on her hip and stares at garth searchingly.  “ you know he doesn’t like to bother you, but arthur’s been worried.  you should visit him sometime soon. ”  her heart swells with pride when she thinks about the wonderful things garth does on land, but atlantis misses him, sometimes, too.
