News Update: On August 13, thousands of sharks were found on board an illegal Chinese fishing vessel in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. Among the catch were young/baby sharks, and hammerheads (a protected species).

The Galápagos National Park has the greatest abundance of sharks in the world. Its waters are restricted, and fishing here is prohibited.

The 20 crewmen aboard the vessel, named Fu Yuan Yu Leng 999, have been arrested. Unfortunately this is not an unusual occurrence. Marine ecologist Pelayo Salinas says. “There are thousands of these ships roaming the waters.”
