1.01: Questions Using Apakah

Like in English, a simple way to ask a question is to raise one's tone at the end of a sentence, turning it into a question. However, the common way of asking yes or no questions is to use "apa(kah)."

So, what is a y/n question? It's a question that more or less has a yes or no answer. The word "apa" translates to "what" in English but it's not the exact same thing here. I like to think of it more like a do... question word instead of a y/n question word. This is because most often you'll use it in the sense of something like, "do you...;" "do they...;" "are you doing...;" etc. Now, this doesn't mean that you're only limited to "do" questions. I just think of that as a way to remember it.

1: Apakah kamu suka kucing? (Do you like cats?)

2: Ya, saya suka kucing. (Yes, I like cats.)

For more colloquial speech, you can drop the -kah.

1: Apa kamu sudah makan? (Did you eat?)

2: Ya, aku sudah makan. (Yeah, I ate.)

It's seriously so vague and really confusing. Therefore, I'm sorry if there are any inaccuracies - the translations of his songs are mostly inferences. One specific note: "tetaplah terjaga" literally means something like, "stay awake." In the context, I couldn't find a way for it to make sense in English, so, I made it, "realize that this is the end," because that's what I think he was trying to get across. Again, this is just an inference... sorry if it's wrong! But, seriously, I love Afgan... all of his songs... and he's also just too adorable! Ahhh~~! Even so....
