Hyuga Neji || xx
elastic heart
asunokamiā:
āI didnāt ask you to bring him back. You didnāt ask me either. Your squad was gone before I could even stop it.ā Yukirama didnāt like this accusation, didnāt like the road Neji was taking. As if this family matter was his to interfere with. As if Sasukeās decision could be ignored by those who decided to bring him back.
āI am sorry you got mixed up in all of this, Neji, really, I am.ā He was, and that was why he was going to take this next, necessary step.
āIām glad youāre alright. Butā¦the last year has put a lot of things in perspective. About my place in this world. What I am. And I donāt think itās good for you or your life to be around me any longer.ā
He was Danzoās pointed dagger for now, until he figured out how best to leave Konoha. He wouldnāt find any more answers here. But he had to know Neji would not be attached to him, would not suffer surveillance because of him.
Oh...
āI really missed you.ā Itās a bit deflated, one arm held other the other, just kind of worrying the skin on his left forearm.
But he made that obvious, hadnāt he? Telling Yuki how long he spent looking for him, asking-- the way in which he embraced him when he saw him again.Ā
He wouldnāt be so foolish to chase after something that wasnāt there anymore.Ā
After a few moments more, he speaks up again.Ā
āI made Jonin. My team is holding a dinner to celebrate.ā Itās an unsaid invitation, if Yuki wants to take it up.Ā
elastic heart
asunokamiā:
āBecause he is my brother.ā Yukirama stared at Neji. Was he really going to sit here and pass judgement on him?
How dare he? The offense didnāt have to be spoken; it was right there, in Nejiās voice, in his eyes.Ā
āBecause it was right for him. And his choice.ā
He glared at Neji, daring him to find fault with that reasoning. Neji might be younger than Yukirama, but he was no child. He was old enough to come to his own conclusions.
And apparently, old enough to choose sides.
Those words...
That made no sense.
Neji finds his unease growing, coming to a stand, but moving no more than five or so steps away. Heās no intention of leaving, but he certainly needs a little bit of distance at the moment.
How could it possibly be right to hand Sasuke over to Orochimaru? Siblings should be protectedĀ from harm, not hurled into it.Ā
He turns. Faces Yukirama.
āI wonāt claim to understand.ā Because he doesnāt, frankly.
āBut I nearly gave my own life to bring him back.ā Did that-- did that not mean anything?Ā
āI didnāt want youĀ to lose the only sibling you had--ā This was personalĀ now. It was as if Yuki had just...allowedĀ Neji to nearly die, knowing he fobbed Sasuke off on Orochimaru. He wouldāve appreciated a warning. So many he and the others didnāt have to get hurt.Ā
āYou have no idea how guilty I felt.ā All for... all for nothing.Ā
elastic heart
asunokamiā:
āWhat did I do?ā
It was definitely the wrong thing to ask, no matter how sweetly the words were put, the implication remained the same.
Yukirama didnāt quite explode, but the forceful grinding of his teeth as he thought his answer through didnāt indicate a peaceful sort of mind.
A bitter laugh escaped him instead of a coherent explanation.
āThe better question is what I didnāt do. I didnāt betray this cursed village. I didnāt slaughter all of the shinobi sent to stop him. I didnāt question what Iāve been doing with my life. Iām a damned fool, Neji. Iāve beenā¦hah, Iāve been living a complete and utter lie. A pathetic one, at that.ā
Yes, what did heĀ do, considering the village thought it fitting to make him serve a prison sentence--
But he listens, knowing heās partly being a complete fool by wanting something good to come out of Yuki, like he was used to before. Feelings were--
Well, he could see how Lady Hinata was a bit foolish at times. It made sense.
Shikamaru is much better at this than anyone else is. Piecing things together, from scant clues and words. But Neji isnāt to be trifled with either, taking everything in and adding to what he already knows.
Yukirama served a prison sentence for something that happened a year ago. He disappeared immediately after Sasuke did, without anyone breathing a word about it.Ā
He and Sasuke were close.Ā
āYou helpedĀ him.ā
A beat.
āWhy?ā He canāt help but judge a little, here. Uchiha Sasuke defected to one of the Leafās worst enemies and criminals-- why did Yukirama helpĀ him?
elastic heart
asunokamiā:
āA year. A whole year.ā Yukirama wasnāt surprised, but it hurt anyway. Neji was the only root he had left now, the only thing that kept him from shepherding and hounding Sasukeās journey of vengeance.
He regarded Neji sharply, taking in all the changes. Heād grown taller, dressed differently, seemed calmer.Ā
āI was rotting away at Konohaās pleasure.ā
So he was--
...Ah.
Okay.
Well, Neji had his answer. His hunch was correct.Ā
And it... complicated things.
You didnāt get sent to Konohaās prisons for just anything and everything. A shinobi turning traitorous, such as Sasuke... it was a big deal. People like Orochimaru, who had managed escape and continued their crimes elsewhere...
Neji is smart, his hands dropping to Yukiās forearm, gaze a little low.Ā
He really shouldnāt be seen with a traitor to the village.
But the thought doesnāt end there. Yuki was released, which meant heād recognized the nature of his crime, and made amends, and was trusted enough to be in the populace again.
...And then there was the secretive behavior, ontop of the anger rolling off of Yukiramaās tongue. An anger that didnāt show remorse.Ā
āWhat did you do.ā He wants to know, and asks it gently. He wants to believe the man who swept him up a year ago isnāt a threat to his home.
elastic heart
asunokamiā:
āCome then.ā
Yukirama didnāt stop to explain himself, he only lead the way to the place he felt most secure at; oddly enough, the very isolated training ground where theyād first met.
True, it wasnāt as private as a restricted residence, or even a clan-specific district, but it was fairly remote, and at this time, not in use.Ā
Yukirama chose a spot near a tree that had been split through the trunk and folded into three, curving, individual strains of wood. He sat down on a sloped, barren part and waited for Neji to do the same.
He didnāt start speaking before using his sharingan to check everything around them, but it looked clear.
āYou never wondered where I went? What did they say to you?ā
Yuki tried his best not to sound entirely bitter, but the spite was strong in him nonetheless.
Yuki wasnāt this... carefulĀ before.Ā
āOf course I did.ā He defends himself immediately, sidling in closer at Yukiramaās right.Ā
āThe last thing I remembered is your face...and then it was as if youād disappeared. Not even Godaime-sama would answer my questions. Everyone else had no idea who you even were.āĀ
elastic heart
asunokamiā:
Yukirama allowed him to take lead for a couple of minutes, but the further Neji lead him from the Uchiha district, the more sluggish his steps grew. Eventually, his hand around Nejiās arm pulled them to a complete stop.
āNo. Neji, you donāt understand. Iāve beenā¦I amā¦not what you think. Not what I used to think.ā
He nodded in the direction theyād been heading,Ā āI want to tell you something. But I canāt risk anyone hearing it. Not your family, either.ā
He didnāt care about that--Ā he wanted to know where Yuki had been. Away from the public eye, yet still in the village? Didnāt make sense, unless heādĀ been imprisoned.
āThe worst is someone seeing.ā
But...
āDo you know somewhere better?ā More secure than a district only Hyuga could come in and out of?
āIāll follow.ā
elastic heart
asunokamiā:
The route lead him home, but Yukirama didnāt really take anything in. The people, the life of the village, it was distant. Happening in some world that he lived alongside.
Heād taken some long path to the district, and the few people heād met on the way hadnāt interacted with him in any way. Perfect strangers, thatās what the whole village felt like now.
Yukiramaās hazy bubble of thoughts was interrupted by a voice he hadnāt heard in a year, and a touch heād craved for an equal length of time.
Neji.
Neji, warm, alive, healthy, hugging him. It felt too much after so little for so long, but Yukirama did nothing to push him away. He stared down at the head of brown hair, guts twisting inside of his body.
Happiness and relief alongside unadulterated anger.Ā
āā¦back?ā he muttered, voice quiet and disturbed,Ā āIā¦never left.ā
Slowly, he wrapped one arm around Nejiās shoulders, looking around, seeing if anyone was watching them.Ā
Funny, how four small little words can tell Neji so much. He only squeezes slightly harder, and nods his understanding of the situation.Ā
āYou must be hungry.ā Nejiās pulled away, dropping his hands to Yukiramaās wrist, tugging him along.
At least within the Hyugaās side branch, you only had to worry about prying eyes, and not any prying ears. Neji can save his turbid emotions until then, and sit Yuki down to a nice meal, even if itās leftovers.
Missing for a whole year and some-- and claiming heād never left. There was so much more to it than that.Ā

[continuation for @ochospajaros]
The footsteps were closer now. One, two, three steps. The stairs. The metallic click of the lock, the heavy swing of the door. They were coming for him.
Just as the old man said.
Heād walk free, and Konoha and its new Hokage would be none the wiser.
How strange, in a village full of secrets, from a man who prided himself on keeping them, Yukirama had finally heard the truth. It wasnāt a truth that he could like, nor one he could be proud of. It was a hard, cold set of facts that would now stain him for the rest of his life.
A life, it seemed, he was to live according to the plans that had been made him since before he was created. Not birthed. No, not him.
A year had passed since heād first been thrown into these same walls. A year since heād seen his little brother out of this village, and sent him running into the fangs of a snake.
A year since heād known freedom. Since heād known what it meant to be whole, and ignorant,
Heād breathe fresh air again. Maybe even today. Yukirama had lost his taste for it. There was nothing for him to return to. An empty home, a hollow name that was not his own. The legacy of two men so far beyond his reach that they were nothing but strangers.
A village built on the machinations of spiders. And he was firmly wrapped into the deadly silk.
He had to hand it to Danzo; the man knew how to read people. He knew which buttons to press. Heād seemedā¦almost amused, if you will. Not that his ever-present frown had ever lightened when he spoke, but thereād been something there, in his eye, that gave Yukirama the impression that theĀ ādealā had been enjoyable for Danzo to propose.
His loyalty to Konoha for discretion. Service to Danzo personally for the lie of his involvement in Sasukeās defection. Treason, as it had been styled.Treason that had beset all living Uchiha, fully blooded or not.
The delicate ripping of paper seals at his door now. Yukirama felt ancient as he stirred. Freedom was an illusion now, but leaving the hole heād been buried in for a year would feel good nonetheless.
He didnāt doubt that the world had forgotten him quickly. In Nejiās case, he hoped that heād been smart enough to keep his mouth firmly shut. Curiosity didnāt kill cats, but it did kill shinobi.
There was nothing grand about his release. There was no fanfare, no crowd, nothing but a discreet shuffling him through the familiar territories of the prison.Ā
At least he wouldnāt have to go too far to get home, Yukirama thought with nothing short of venomous bitterness.
āIām sorry. I couldnāt-- I couldnāt bring him back.ā
Those were the last words Neji remember saying to Yukirama, held securely in his grasp, rescued after his fight with one of Orochimaruās men.
And then Yuki was just... gone.
Not a single person in the village had the answer Neji sought after his release from the hospital. Not even the new Godaime herself. He argued hard, under the pretext he simply wanted to do the kind thing and personally thank his savior, and yet-- nothing.
Was Yukirama reallyĀ that much of a loner? Even the most common of civilians knew of Uchiha Sasuke, the traitor, but the second he mentioned Yukirama, heads tilted. People blinked. It was as if he didnāt exist.
No mention of defection. Of being killed in action. Of being kidnapped.Ā
Visits to the Uchiha district proved just as fruitless. It was completely empty, with no sign of a struggle. He continued-- in the vein hope he might find a note, or that Yuki might be hiding out.
But like any shinobi, Neji had to press forward, and move on.
His relationship with Hiashi had drastically improved. More often than not, he was allowed to train with him and the other members of the main branch. That which he learned there, Neji took back and taught the members of the side branch.
This was a privilege few would ever get-- Neji knows itās partly because of his his status as Hiashiās nephew. But one day-- in the far future, there will be a truly united Hyuga clan, and this is just the first step there.
Lady Hinata joins his sessions. Heās thankful for it as well-- this is a level of forgiveness he knows he isnāt due.
But Yuki remains on his mind. Always lingering in the back, always making him think what happened. Most shinobi just didnāt... disappear like that.Ā

āOf course, you would be the first of us to reach Jonin!ā Lee almost screams at Neji, hands firmly planted on his shoulders, the excitement too much to bear to him. The weight is uncomfortable, Neji winching slightly.
āAre you going to take students now!?ā
āLee--ā Come on--
āHaha!ā Gaiās laughter slices through the one-sided tension.Ā
āNeji might be a Jonin now, but heās still a little too young for students of his own. It takes a great deal of experience before weāre allowed to train the next generation of shinobi.ā His hand is comforting over Leeās shoulder.
āBut thatās enough for us from today. Youāre all dismissed until dinner tonight, where weāll celebrate your promotion.ā
(That usually meant the curry place, and Nejiās not sure how that counts as a celebration for himself.)
Ah, well, he sets off on the familiar path to the district.
Yuki is there, like a ghost on the edge of his vision.
...Wait.
Neji neverĀ saw things that werenāt there. His Byakugan activates, and confirming Yukiās chakra system tells him so little and so much at the same time. Immediately, heās wrapped himself around Yukiās torso.Ā
āWelcome back.āĀ
in my world neji never died he just got a really big splinter and recovered

Too much had happened in the last weeks for Yukirama to consider himself lucky for having made it through alive and relatively unharmed.
The loss of the Hokage was a heavy blow for the entire village, and a deep hit to the pride of the Anbu that could do nothing to save the man who sacrificed himself for them all.
Suna had struck them hard with their unusual ally, and the aftertaste of it was bitter ash in the mouths of all that survived.
The rain hadnāt stopped for days. It was a solemn, fitting mood for a funeral. Yukirama had spent many silent hours awake at night before the dawn came, grey and heavily burdened.Ā
He and Sasuke spoke little on the way to the ceremony, the thunderous clouds painting a canvas of grief for Konohagakure. They stood among rows and rows of shinobi and civilians. Some cried, others spoke quietly, some said nothing at all.
Yukirama caught sight of the Hyuga just once, and although he did feel a need to at least speak with Neji, he suppressed that instinct and stayed where he was.
Itās perfectly natural that Yuki would attend this with his little brother. After all, this was a time to be with family. Family that you couldāve lost. Neji thinks nothing of it, and doesnāt even direct his attention towards Yukirama once.Ā
When the funeral is dismissed, Neji goes straight home, to change out of his clothing and into his regular attire. This is a good day to get some training in.Ā
Flightless Bird
asunokamiā:
āYeah?ā Yukirama approved of the lazy comfort they shared right now. It felt good, natural, not at all embarrassing. Of course, it wouldnāt be for him anyway, but Neji was a special case and Neji made him feel like he was barely cresting his early teen years and suffering his first crush. It was both terrible and wonderful and Yukirama had learned to appreciate it for what it was.
āYeah.ā He could only hope that Neji found equal peace and warmth in his company.Ā
ā...Yeah.ā Neji repeats, after a few moments. He could really get used to this kind of lazying around. Especially if it came with thoseĀ kinds of physical activities.Ā
Heās only awake for an hour more. Here, thereās really little to worry about, and he appreciates Yukirama for being able to put him at such ease.Ā
And they settle into a comfortable routine, after. It seems Sasuke has still not shown up at all, and Neji puts it up to his training, and the fact itās not reallyĀ his business after all. If Yukiās worrying, heās not really seeing it, but perhaps itās the same thing-- trusting Sasuke to be able to take care of himself during this time.Ā
Neji in the meantime, splits his time inbetween his training and Yuki. With Tenten and Lee eliminated, he doesnāt really have to spend time with them, either. He isnāt really worried at all. Itās just Naruto. Sasuke is the only one who could put up a fight, and thatās even if Sasuke gets past the genin from Suna. Ontop of that, one Kekke Genkai canāt copy another. Heās generally safe.
--
Maybe he shouldĀ have invested a bit more time into the training, Neji thinks, reflecting on his unforeseen defeat. Or perhaps thatās just Narutoās unpredictability... Heāll have plenty of time to figure that out later.
Whatās more important is the torment in his heart. Hiashi said his Father had done it on purpose. To save the village, to choose his own fate. It sounds wrong, and yet like something heād do. The two forces pull at him, and his only real comfort is when Yukirama sneaks in, and Neji presses himself to his side.
Itās whispered into Yukiās bicep. He wants his boyfriendās opinion on it.Ā
Thankfully, they have plenty of time to chat, even if one match is forfeited, another continues, and then time stalls, and stalls, and stalls, until Sasuke finally arrives.
āGo.ā Neji tells him, with a helpful push. Thatās his little brother, and he hasnāt seen him in a month, no? He needs to see him now. Heāll be fine on his own for just this while.
But tragedy strikes. The arena is attacked, and Neji soon discovers the whole village is in danger as he and others are escorted out by a group of Jounin.Ā
At the end of the day, putting in as much defense as he can in his state, the news are as follows: Suna had betrayed them, allied with Orochimaru, and Lord Third had died.
The mood is grim. In the district and everywhere else. Lord Hokage Sarutobi Hiruzen had been serving long before Neji was born. Without him, many more lives wouldāve been lost, and so today, there is a funeral in his honor, and ever shinobi is mandated to come.Ā

āUhā¦ā Yukirama was certainly eloquent in the heat of the moment. To be perfectly honest, he was completely content to smother Neji beneath him for now, to just stretch across the length of the couch and hold Neji close. Burn the sight, touch, taste and smell of him into his mind, into his memories.
Yukiās needs stretched beyond that, but he pushed that out of his thoughts.
āYou donāt have to do anything. Thatās kind of the point of a reward, you know? You already did your part by winning.ā Yuki found space on the couch, closed his arms and ensnared Neji, bringing him down by proxy. Neji fit pretty well against him here too.
āOh, well... thank you.ā That was so kind of him, and heās already chastising himself for having such redundant thoughts.Ā
But he goes down with Yukirama easily enough, shifting slightly so he can wrap his arms around him in return, even if itās nowhere near being able to close them.Ā
Itās... odd.
Odd in a good way.Ā
This is his first time sharing a bed with someone while naked. He should be more embarrassed, but itās a strange kind of comfort, to be held so securely, baring so much skin.Ā
āThis is nice.ā He murmurs, a minute later, without thinking.
AAAAA

asunokamiā:
Elsewhere turned out to be Yukiramaās room. It was nothing fancy, containing little in the way of furniture or personal trinkets. A plain bed, a sofa, a desk, a shelf containing some scrolls (pilfered from the archives), the Uchiha crest on the wall.
Heād made no special effort to personalize, not in this house. It felt like too much of an intrusion and it would show a lack of respect towards the people that had died here.
So Yuki kept it plain.
He deposited Neji on the sofa, kind enough to drop his clothes there too.
āTired? You kind of look like youāre going to pass out.ā
āIām.. a little winded, but Iāll be alright.ā It was just mostly getting his nerves to settle down, right now.Ā
The couch feels weird against his skin, still bare, not bothering to really re-dress since Yuki said he wouldnāt need them. So there was more planned, and instead, heāll reach over to at least fold them neatly for later.
āShould I... return the favor?ā He wonāt have the same vigor, but he can definitely try.
Itās only fair.Ā
