Excited Eridians: Grace! We found you a tree!
Grace: What? Really? That's amazing! Where?
Eridians: On this weird rogue moon that floated into our solar system.
Grace: Oh, that's...weird, but cool. Can I see it?
Eridians, bringing the tree into Grace's enclosure for enrichment: Very good tree. It makes lots of sap, question?
Grace, staring at the tree they've just shown him that is visibly oozing blood and looks like its made out of flesh, but who is also a scientist who knows he doesn't know every tree and that there are lots of really weird trees out there: Uh...yeah, that's...probably true.
It takes a lot to set up what the Eridians have dubbed "Grace's Tree" and Grace has mentally named The Blood Tree. They want it to grow big and strong and healthy because they know that having plants around is supposed to be good for a human's mental health, but it oozes a lot and Grace gets kind of twitchy when they mention that the 'sap' might reach the false ocean. So they create some sort of basin so that the tree's sap is collected without spreading, and keep everything nice and contained. They're so proud of their latest addition to Grace's environment.
And like. Grace thinks the tree is weird. It makes him nervous to look at it, and he doesn't really want to touch it. But it's alive, and the closest thing to an actual plant that he's seen here on Erid (he loves Rocky's Xenonite tree, it's beautiful, but it's more like a statue or an art piece than a plant), and the Eridians were just so happy to have found something they thought that Grace would like. So even though it kind of freaks him out a bit, he is determined to take care of The Blood Tree.
He goes out every morning and waters it, keeps a close eye on the soil at its base, and asks for more when it looks like the tree might need more. He looks up everything he can find about trees on the stuff brought down from the Hail Mary to try to figure out how to best maintain it. He still has no idea what kind of tree he's dealing with, but he does find references to trees that ooze red sap. Maybe that's the kind of tree he has?
And of course, this is Ryland Grace we're talking about. So while he's taking good care of his new tree, he's also chatting with it. He tells the tree about his day, about his students, about the Eridians' latest attempt to introduce flavour into the meburgers (it's been mixed results. they almost taste like mint now, which is...yeah. ew). He yaps and yaps and yaps. He calls the tree 'buddy', and acts like they're old friends. He slowly gets used to this super weird plant growing in the enclosure with him, oozing ominous red fluid everywhere, to the point that he's fond of it.
And then one morning when he goes down to the tree to water it, the tree has vanished.
Dismayed, Grace rushes towards where it had been standing, trying desperately to think of where it might have gone. It's not like there was wind to knock it over. Had it died or something? Had the Eridians moved it? Why didn't they warn him?
But then he gets to the plot of dirt, and realizes that there's something else there where the tree had been. Or rather, someone. A man is sitting in the soil, just as bloody as the tree, buck naked and glaring up at Grace like Grace is the source of all of his problems.
Grace just gapes down at the man, completely at a loss for words.
"Oh wow," the man wheezes out, his voice hoarse and gravel-rough. "You can shut the fuck up."
If Grace screams a little bit after that, well, who can blame him really?
