Thinking about the process of Grace getting his memories back in the movie. At first he remembers absolutely nothing, but then as he sees things, experiences things, they trigger recollection. He sees the scientific equipment and recognizes it and realizes he’s “smart”. He tries desperately to remember how he got here and who he is and he remembers the petrova line and his classroom and Stratt. In the book, she is how he remembers his name.

But what really must have kicked his memory into high gear was meeting Rocky. Not just the way that got him back into scientist mode (centrifuge, etc) but the process of teaching each other their language. Rocky had his xenonite puppet show, but Grace was still barely better than a blank slate. How many words and concepts brought back little pieces of his past with them? Here he is, on an adrenaline high making first contact with an actual intelligent alien being, and all the while it’s tiny shock after tiny shock as he makes contact with himself.

And then the trip to Adrian. Grace gives Rocky a tour of Earth in the Don’t Go Crazy Room. Did he remember New York before he showed it to Rocky? Did he remember climbing trees as a child before he showed Rocky the video of a tree? Every single memory that came back returned in a new context, isolated fragments that were only truly glued together by Rocky’s presence. Over and over again, he would show Rocky something he didn’t recognize himself, and then suddenly it would come back to him, and he’d relive it with Rocky, climb the tree with him, tour New York with him, for the first time all over again.

The self that Grace built anew on the Hail Mary had Rocky at its core, and woven through every part of it.
