Thinking about Grace eventually setting up a communication line on Erid. Going into Mary one last time and flipping on the recording. "I don't know if this will reach Earth while everyone I knew was alive. But I want you to know I'm not only alive, but that I'm okay! I have friends and family and... I've made a life here". He looks away from the camera and hums some kind of melody to himself. This isn't the Ryland Grace everyone knew. He's covered in gems and mesh and speaks with a strange up-and-down tone to his voice, almost like he's singing to a song no one else can hear.

"I forgive you." He says finally. "I will never return to Earth. I will never know if this reaches you. But I forgive you... You did murder someone that day. But... a new man was born out of it. I think I... I think I like him a lot more."

He adjusts the earrings he wears, now, "For all of my students, all of you -- every single one I've taught. I'm proud of you. You made me the man I am today, and I remember each and every one of you. You're going to do great things -- if you haven't already"

ok i'm actually going a little insane over the parallel between when Grace and Stratt are on the deck, and Grace says "it must be hard, asking everyone to ... y'know", and Stratt answers "actually it isn't"

cut to when he's saying no to going on the ship, and she says "don't make this harder, please"

because this is the bit that is hard. asking her friend to go, knowing he's going to say no, but knowing your last memories are going to have to be forcing him onto the ship anyway.

I have never felt as human as you have made me feel...

I'm gonna write a small thing about how I felt making this.

I grew up very dehumanized by the people around me, whether friends, family or strangers. I don't know if it was because I'm autistic or what, but I was always treated like an animal.

Simon has been an exploration of that feeling, the feeling of being treated like an animal sent to slaughter.

Simon speaks to the dog in me that felt conditional love. There is something so alluring yet terrifying about the feeling of unconditional love. It feels unreal, it feels wrong. But sometimes closing your eyes and putting out a hand is the first step.

Sorry to get so personal but I felt like it was kinda important for the way I write Simon to be.
