I'm a bookseller and I love that so much but if I don't get this boring county council job I've applied for to leave the trade I'm going to scream. I've always wanted to work with books but the shop I'm in is so poorly run and the issues are so systemic and I can't stand it.

I'm the newest full-time staff member, got 2.5 years under my belt. While I've been there, the book trade in Ireland has been continuously rocked by governmental decisions that I can't even be mad about. School books should be free. They should have always been free. They're not wrong to make them free.

But my shop, along with many other rural independent book shops, have used the school book sales as a float to cover poor sales during the rest of the year. This is the third summer of the book scheme, and larger companies can and do offer services, prices, and turnaround times that small shops just cannot compete with. The governmental tendering process is time-consuming and tricky, and the payouts are slim to none. Somehow, tendering has become my job. There is so much pressure on me. It's like I've put in this position so they can blame me when the business fails.

They should have planned for this from three years ago. They should have expanded their business model to incorporate other goods, which would get more customers in the door. They should have relocated to be more accessible. They should have invested properly in building a functional webstore and promoting it.

They should have done so much, but they didn't, and now I'm sitting here, 8 hours before my next shift, dreading going there because I have So. Much. Work to do and none of it even fucking matters.

Doesn't help that today was my day off and my coworker just texted me that she didn't do any work in my section because she is also under pressure for different quotes and stuff, so when I go in I'm starting the day off on an at least 2 hour delay while I play catch up and then I've to try and do my extremely time-sensitive work on time to get back up to speed. I ordinarily wouldn't mind because I know her work is also important and time-sensitive but it's such a running theme that any time off I have, even just a lunch break, I come back and they've either not done anything and let everything build up or they've actively fucked something up and I'm just so fucking done with it.

I can't wait to be out of this place. Might even get a fucking living wage out of a new place.

the kids kermit and piggy "have" in that movie are not hypothetical children they could have. they're actors. in all the muppet adaptations of classic literature the point is that the muppets are acting. kermit is acting as bob crachit, piggy is acting as emily crachit, and so on and so forth. it's literally in the opening credits. tiny tim isn't kermit and piggy's child in an alternate universe. it's robin, kermit's nephew, playing the part of tiny tim.

I wanted to make a Throckmorton joke today and I was workshopping it all afternoon so I could make a rare original post but instead I've gotten into a potentially relationship-ending argument with a friend of like, 8 years, and I'm so mad at her that I've forgotten the damn joke.

Thought-provoking. Terrifying. Existential. Damning. Civil War might be my favorite film of the year.

I didn't hate Civil War, but I wouldn't say I absolutely loved it, either. It is an amazing movie, but it was very hard to watch.

I would say it is best to watch Civil War knowing as little as possible, so please be warned for any potential spoilers below.

It is incredibly well written, directed, shot, and acted. I really appreciate the story, it gripped me from the beginning, with the unique sound design during the A24 title card.

But I also nearly got a panic attack in the first 5 minutes. This movie is definitely not for those with PTSD, especially combat and/or gun-related trauma. If any of those apply to you and you still want to see it, I wouldn't recommend IMAX. You will feel every shot fired. Otherwise, the biggest screen with the loudest speakers is the best way to watch Civil War.

The cast was fantastic. Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura felt so real, and Stephen McKinley Henderson just seems like an expansion of his Dune character, in the best way. I'll be honest, and again this is kind of a spoiler, but I was expecting more Jesse Plemons. He was great, the scene was fantasticly blood-pumping, but I just thought he might have a larger role. My real standout performance, though, is from Cailee Spaeny as Jessie. Last seeing her in Pacific Rim: Uprising helped to reinforce the idea that she's still "just a kid", but her performance as the story progresses really exemplifies the horror of war that turns bright-eyed kids into weary adults in an instant.

As much as people will try to figure out the politics of Civil War or just make up their own, this movie isn't about politics. There is a scene that really drives the message home, if you're paying attention (LAST SPOILER WARNING).

The scene at the winter wonderland is just a microcosm of the movie and the war. You have two sides shooting at each other, and all that matters to the other is that they shoot first. It doesn't matter who started or who is from where or who believes in what. That might've mattered at the beginning, but now all that matters is being the last one standing.

It doesn't matter who started the war or why, all that matters to either side is victory.

I am a pacifist, but I appreciate war films, because most of them are anti-war. Civil War was hard to watch, but I'm very glad I did.

Disturbingly real. Great film.

Kirsten Dunst was fantastic. Cailee Spaeny stole the show.

Haunting stuff. Wow.

P.S. I think Cailee’s character "Jesse" was kinda fruity. 👍

ETA/TRIGGER WARNING: Don't see it if you can't handle VERY real and VERY loud (and sometimes SHOCKINGLY sudden) gunfire that shakes you to your core. Don't go if you suffer from PTSD from time in the military, or from IRL gun violence, etc. Seriously.
