Miniature Book Lecture by Todd Sommfeld

Miniature Book Society Traveling Exhibit & Lecture by Todd Sommerfeld  Exhibit: October 1-31, 2014 Lecture: Saturday, October 18 | 12:00 p.m. Literature Department and Ohio Center for the Book 2nd Floor, Main Library Building - This hands-on discussion and presentation of miniature books will be hosted by the Northern Ohio Bibliophilic Society and the Miniature Book Society. Come meet the local collector, Todd Sommerfeld as he talks about miniature books. He will discuss the history of miniature books from the earliest times to the present, as well as share stories about books and book collecting over the last thirty years. Also on display will be a selection of miniature books from the John F. Puskas Miniature Books Collection.

The festival brings over 130 authors to Cincinnati for the region's largest book festival. The Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library had a representative at a table in the organizers and sponsors area.

*Miniature Book Society Traveling Exhibit and Lecture by Todd Sommerfeld This hands-on discussion and presentation of miniature books will be hosted by the Northern Ohio Bibliophilic Society and the Miniature Book Society. He will discuss the history of miniature books from the earliest times to the present, as well as share stories about books and book collecting over the last thirty years. What is a Miniature Book? In the United States, a miniature book is usually considered to be one which is no more than three inches in height, width, or thickness. Some aficionados collect slightly larger books while others specialize in even smaller sizes. Outside of the United States, books up to four inches are often considered miniature. Also on display will be a selection of miniature books from the John F. Puskas Miniature Books Collection. Manry at Sea: in the Wake of a Dream

Steve Wystrach, Director, Robert Manry Project, presented “Manry at Sea: In the Wake of a Dream,” highlighting the remarkable story of the Clevelander who, in 1965, made his solo voyage across the Atlantic in his 13.5 foot sailboat, Tinkerbelle.

The presentation included footage from Wystrach’s documentary film trailer,Tinkerbelle Sails the Atlantic, photos surrounding the epic voyage, and the tale of how one man realized his improbable dream.

From the October 5, 2013 Lecture with American Comic Book Artist and Cartoonist Chris Ware winner of Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards for Best Letterer, Best Colorist, Best Comic Book, Best Continuing or Limited Series and Best Cartoonist.. Quimby the Mouse, Rusty Brown, Building Stories and Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth are just a few of the ground breaking characters and series that have come to life under Ware’s pen. His Acme Novelty Library series continues to defy the world of conventional comic books with every issue. He believes that the best comics should allow us to read pictures, not just look at them; and he sees the black outlines of figures as approximations of the way we remember and conceptualize the world. His precise, geometrical layouts are still drawn by hand with paper, ink, rulers and T-squares.

Ware has edited the Best American Comics annual, curated a Phoenix Art Museum exhibit of the non-comic works of five contemporary cartoonists and created the iconic mural on the facade of the San Francisco Literacy Project headquarters. His works have earned numerous awards including Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards for Best Letterer, Best Colorist, Best Comic Book, Best Continuing or Limited Series and Best Cartoonist.

Street Stories @ Jefferson Branch with

The Street Stories Workshops @ Jefferson Branch was great fun! These  bookmaking workshops with Art Books Cleveland artist Melissa O'Grady allow for the creation of a book arts box of various book forms on the theme of "Building Stories," including an accordion fold book, fortune-telling book, and graphic paper dolls.

SLAM: Chapbooks as Bursts of Poetry

The Michael Schwartz Library will display examples of chapbooks from its collection to celebrate these bursts of creativity as both literary works and lovingly crafted paper and book art. Items in the display collection date from the early 1960s through present day.

Adventure on the Atlantic: One Man's Voyage

Before travel blogs, one of the ways travelers shared their experiences with friends and family was by keeping a hand-written diary or journal of their adventures. This exhibit focuses on one traveler, Robert Manry, from Willowick, Ohio who crossed the Atlantic in his 13.5 foot sailboat, Tinkerbelle, in 1965.

River of Words Display for the OCFB

The Ohio Center for the Book @ Cleveland Public Library is serving as Ohio's regional coordinator for River of Words. Co-sponsored by The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress and St. Mary's College, River of Words is an annual international poetry and art contest for K-12 students. After learning something about their local watershed, children respond with art or poetry. There are international prizes, and we will also be granting prizes for Ohio's top entries.

Folding Book Art

Celebrate Octavofest at the Cleveland State University Michael Schwartz Library by creating folded book art. Books destined for recycling can be transformed by folding their pages to create voluminous and intriguing shapes. Examples can be seen in the Octavofest exhibit areas September 30 – October 31. A limited number of books will be available for folding and participants are welcome to bring books to fold.
