wei wuxian is an incredibly complex and interesting character, and i love exploring his psyche in writing and in fics. and as a fellow adhd-er, control freak, and smarter than average person i identify with him in a lot of ways.
was an arrogant ass by his own admission
had a martyr and a hero complex
held no respect for jiang cheng's agency
harassed wen qing into performing an untested, theoretical medical procedure that could have killed both him AND jiang cheng, and did not so much as consult or talk to jiang cheng about it at all
refused, at every opportunity, to tell even a modified version of the truth about why he was using demonic cultivation
committed war crimes on a massive scale
reanimated the 17/18 year old wen ning, trapping him as an undead being who CANNOT EVEN CRY
refused help at every single turn, so convinced of his own righteousness when he could have used his many connections to find asylum for the elderly people he was looking over
his refusal to tell the truth or ask for help (because of his own arrogance, again by his own admission), and his loss of control over his poisonous form of 'cultivation' lead to the death of jin zixuan
murdered thousands of people at nightless city
indirectly caused the death of jiang yanli
The 'second flutist' is a drama only addition. In all other forms of the story, Qiongqi Path and Nightless City are Wei Wuxian's own complete lack of control and it's consequences. Whether Jin Guangyao was directly manipulating sentiment about Wei Wuxian or not, he quite literally did not have the pull or the power to cause everything that happened. He was the barely recognized bastard son of Jin Guangshan.
Su She cast the curse on Jin Zixun of his own volition. Even if Jin Guangyao sent Zixuan to Qiongqi with the hopes of something bad happening, it was still Wei Wuxian that caused Zixuan's death.
It was still a renegade corpse under Wei Wuxian's summons that first injured Jiang Yanli.
Wei Wuxian is not innocent. That's a huge, major point in the entire story. He fucked up, and he knows it, and now he has to live with that for the rest of his life.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The ends do not justify the means.
Maybe it's because I've had to learn to back the fuck off and not assume my way is always the best/right way, but god I get so irritated when people just give him a pass. He was a fucking idiot at so many points in the story when just trusting someone else could have saved everyone so much heartbreak.
