Today, Punknews is pleased to debut the new track by Odd Dates."Games" is a low and nasty slab of sludge punk. The duo of Jeremy Dye and Sam Padalino roll through a chaotic mess of broken riffs, desperate howls, and violent drums. This is some nasty music. THe track is off Deep Cuts Don't Keep th...
Track No. 2 off the new album. This one’s a little heavier.
Odd Dates' brand of punk is defined by intricacies that are felt rather than formulated. Songs start, stop and proceed not by metronome but by chemistry.
Aye, first song of our new album. Check it.

tour announcement is live! excited to finally tell you that we’ll be headed to the west again, this time with our new and lovely friends in Pillow Talk. hyped to cross the desert with fellow southerners. after we split with them, we also have the privilege of doing a short midwest run with the homies in The Cardboard Swords, who have a ton of exciting news coming up themselves.
in the interim of time between our KCMO and Omaha shows, we’ll be in Kansas recording our first-ever full length record with Chris Crisci of The Appleseed Cast. we can’t begin to articulate how much we anticipate this opportunity and how ready we are to show you these songs–both on the road and on the record. our hearts go out to Tiny Engines Records for being the wind beneath our sails.

new foxing merch in Japanese
except my Japanese friend says what they wrote in Japanese actually makes no sense lmfao
the top line - アルバトロス translate to: Albatross the red line - 表具上部シミ translates to: “Hyogu top stains” for those of you who may be unfamiliar with “Hyogu”, it refers to the ancient eastern craft of mounting pieces of calligraphy, paintings, or other works of art onto scrolls, frames, or folding screens in order to preserve and display them. Basically another way of saying “Hyogu top stains” is “brown spots on paper” and since there is no direct word for “Foxing” in Japanese, but “Foxing” literally means “brown spots on paper”, this is the closest I could get to our actual band name.
the two vertical lines - あなたは私を抑えることができなかった translates to “you could not hold you back/suppress me” 私はあなたを抑えることができなかった translates to “because I could not hold you back/suppress you” the lines from our song "Bloodhound" "you could not contain me" & "Quietus" "because I could not contain you"
the word “contain” has multiple meanings in Japanese and can be interpreted in several different ways.. so for example あなたは私を保持することができませんでし means “you could not hold me” in a literal sense, i.e. you could not hold me because I am too large or too heavy. where as あなたは私を抑えることができなかった speaks more to the idea of holding someone back, i.e. you can not hold me back from my destiny.
I want to take a moment to follow up on this post, and then perhaps extrapolate a larger idea. When I first saw marvsssea's post calling out our design for it's inaccuracy, my ears perked up like a pup and I popped off a quick “sheeeeit”. We had checked and double checked our accuracy; not only did we feel secure in our design as a whole, but we were also very confident that we had avoided the foreign language pitfall of having some cool looking characters, but when read by a native speaker it comes out to some wild gibberish. You know those beefcakes who get those sick tribal arm wraps with some Japanese script that is supposed to say “through darkness I will reach the stars” or some other poetic shit like that, but in all actually it reads “mouth full of dip” or whatever? That’s what we were trying to avoid.
So I took her to task, listed off everything we had written on the shirt, and then sat back watched the internet join hands and harmonize in unison, “marvsssea, you got served!” And here’s the thing, we were right, kinda. Specifically, in regards to “表具上部シミ"—it does share the same meaning as our band name, however, marvsssea, well more specifically marvsssea’s friend, was right as well, in fact, he was way more right. We were wrong, there is a direct word for Foxing! It wasn’t until I got in contact with her friend, who pointed out that “フォクシング” is a direct word for our band name and the route we took, i.e. chasing the meaning rather than the word, came off confusing. After emailing back and forth her friend, Keisuke, as well as another highly educated cat named, Paul Piwowarsk, I got completely learned on the error of our ways and why we completely overlooked an entire aspect of the Japanese language. If you are interested in understanding what we did wrong, Paul wrote up a post on the subject that you can read here. I’m writing all of this for three reasons, the first being to happily inform everyone that we were able to change our design before the shirts were printed. Secondly, to admit that I was wrong, and had it not been for marvsssea, our shirts would have been inaccurate, meaning that once we inevitably found out, we would have hated that shirt, we would have spent months trying to bury it like a kitten shamed by the sight of his shit. So thank you marvsssea for posting what you did, and thank you Keisuke and Paul for taking the time out of your days to educate me. Third and finally, and I guess you can look at this as me soapboxing or whatever, but I’m going to get heavy for a minute. In the brief back and forth that marvsssea and I privately shared in regards to her post, it was brought to my attention that fans of ours were anonymously sending her hateful and mean spirited messages in regards to her alleged serving. I’m gonna hit this on a couple levels, so vibe with me.. First off, unbeknownst to us in the heat of my ultimately light hearted rebuttal, she was right, and not only was she right, but she caused a chain of events that made our design better. She essentially fixed our shirt. So, everyone who pre-ordered that shirt should take a second to thank her. Secondly, even if she was wrong, it weighs heavy on my heart to hear that people who call themselves our fans would be harassing this person. Me rebutting her original post was not a call to arms to threaten or name call this person; I was defending our work, I was attacking an idea, not a person. If you were one of those people that decided to take it upon yourself to harass marsssea as a result of my post, I am ashamed to have you as fan of our band—I would like to think our fans know better than that. I’m not talking about someone saying “hey, marvsssea, you got served.” That shit is whatever, that’s baby food, and while time proved that marvsssea in fact did not get served, I think it’s funny that anyone would message “you got served” to someone else.. There is a difference between a little razzing and some dark and mean shit—and quite frankly, you know what the difference is, because if nothing else, you have the fortitude and attention span to get this far in my post. For us, it is fun to engage with our fans in a specific way—rather than leaving everything that everyone says about us alone and ascending into the heavens of reclusive band people, we prefer to razz, argue, rebut, poke fun at, and genuinely treat people who like our band the same as we treat each other. Please don’t make us regret that, if we can’t disagree with someone without an unenlisted army of “fans” “having our backs” then we truly need to bow out of our interactions with fans. I would rather not talk to a single fan, never answer a message, and simply post business bullshit to our social media, if it meant that our fans were leaving other people alone. Act right. Bullies are going the way of the buffalo. If you are reading this and you sent marvsssea some dark shit, do me a favor and take moment to apologize, you can do it anonymously or whatever, but just do it, I’m here as a representative for my band, not anonymously (it’s Josh), saying marvsssea, thank you for helping make our design better, I’m sorry I tried to serve you and got served in the process.
Be kind, Josh
