I love The Good Place so much, it's a fantastic show, but I will never get over how one of the first things Michael says is "Every major religion guessed about five per cent right [about the afterlife]", citing Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Hindus as examples, and then presents an afterlife concept so Christian that I've met multiple real-life Christians who believe that that's how it works.

I like to think that he just doesn't know shit about religion. He wanted to sound smart and didn't bother looking up the accuracy of his patter first.

#I will admit that did annoy me because I think some of those are mutually exclusive#but he only has to fool four humans who are all kind of self-absorbed and none of whom seem to have been raised religiously#and he's a fire squid and seemingly not a very smart one#I think Chidi's the only one who MIGHT - in the course of his studies in ethics - have some notion that that's not true but he's#abruptly too caught up with handling the ethics of the whole Eleanor situation and also his stomach hurts :(

Also Chidi starts the series very much of the position that a) fundamental moral truths are a thing and b) the all-knowing angel who created their little pocket of the afterlife would definitely know more than him, so if he heard Michael say this then he'd just think "that doesn't sound right... I guess I must be wrong about world religions!" He is a man who wants correct answers to exist and trusts that the cosmic experts know them. Right at the start when Eleanor is outlining how much the afterlife system totally sucks and is unfair, his answer is to shrug and point out that this is apparently how it works; it takes a good half a season for him to come around to the idea that a view that isn't the Cosmic Truth he has been presented with could be valid or even superior to whatever the all-knowing angel says. If Michael said something that start-of-show Chidi thought sounded iffy, Chidi would assume that heaven is right and that he (Chidi) is wrong.

In saying that, Michael himself accidentally gets it kind of right. It's a Hindu afterlife, and a Buddhist one, with a lot of Christian and Jewish along the way.

one more thing. if a character ascends to godhood/divinity/some form of power that makes them practically omnipotent and no longer human. and they had a partner before that who didn’t rise with them. you are legally required to make that situation as terrifying as it would rightly be. it’s bad enough to get the attention of a god. it is ruinous to be loved by one. that is not the person you knew anymore. that is something that never has to let you leave, or have secrets, or disobey it. it will fix every problem you so much as glance at, and it will shower you in grace and gifts until you drown, and it will make you a holy artifact in its own story. you have to understand, it doesn’t remember how horrible death is, so it strikes you to cinders like a snide comment and brings you back with an apology it needs you to accept. that is how it’s going to love you forever, because it might not be inclined to let you die.
