Emma and Daniel behind the scenes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Our 140+ page Harmony Artbook, complete with 22 new artworks from beloved harmony artists ( + 22 bonus accompanying short stories & extra goodies), is now OUT! Details on how to get one below:
Thinking this interview when it comes to Hermione it seems like she could have been in any house. Her strong loyalty could have deemed her a Hufflepuff or maybe it’s because it’s only directed at Harry. As they said, it was Harry and Hermione’s journey, ‘they were true equals.’
And maybe some people will ask: why is that so important? Ron came back, didn't he? Ginny wasn't even allowed to come with him to the hunt, it's not a fair comparison. Sirius didn't willingly leave Harry. Hagrid was there for Harry, wasn't he? Why is the fact that Hermione stayed so special? Why do silly harmony shippers make a mountain out of a molehill and act like this means they would have made sense romantically?
The thing is almost everyone important in Harry's life has left him or failed him or not been there for him one way or another. Some left through death (James, Lily, Sirius). Some left willingly (Ron). Some were there, but limited in the ways they could be there for him (Hagrid). Some wanted to be with him, but were persuaded out of it and accepted they couldn't (Ginny).
But for Hermione it was never a question. Not in fourth year when almost no one else believed him. Not in sixth year where she decided she would go with him without him even saying anything. (And someone may say, well what if Harry had persuaded her to leave him just like Ginny? What if he had said, it's not safe, leave me to my hero's journey alone? Hermione would have laughed in his face and gone anyway. Because she wasn't asking for permission. She had decided herself that she was going to walk that journey with Harry or die trying).
When Ron asks her, if she's coming with him or if she's staying, she chooses Harry instead of her supposed love interest. Over and over again, she chooses him and she FIGHTS for him, even when it’s hard or when Harry fears she won't.
That's the difference. That's what makes it that no one else will be able to compare with what they have.
Harry set out to save the world but he didn't do it because he wanted to: he was resigned to his fate. And deep down, he was resigned to death, and to everyone he ever cared for eventually leaving him behind. It just makes sense and feels like the natural conclusion to their journey that his life partner would be someone who was the only one who stayed, who deeply understood him, who fought for him and walked with him each step of the way.
Harry literally has seperation anxiety about Hermione and was thinking about her ALL the time, constantly and painfully alert that Hermione would leave, looking for signs that weren't there, paranoid and afraid. Deathly afraid. Harry doesn't voice his need often, nor his fears, but in this case his awkward silence stemmed from how much Harry needed her by his side, and how the fear of saying or doing something that would make her rethink staying with him left him in paranoid silence. He needs her desperately.
And like always Hermione stayed with him. For him.
It’s what makes their bond so unshakeable.

Also they:
The other day, I saw someone on Reddit note how Harry and Hermione use each other's wands.
It is wild to me that in the very first book - the same book where Olivander introduces us to the fated nature of Harry's wand and it being the brother wand to Voldemort's - Hermione casually takes Harry's wand to cast alohomora during their chase after the stone.
And, as reddit also pointed out, stark contrasts are drawn between the blackthorn wand that Ron gives Harry and Hermione's wand. Harry isn't noted to struggle to cast spells with Hermione's wand - he effortlessly casts a shield charm in fact. He certainly struggles with the blackthorn wand. And this is in Deathly Hallows, the other book where wand lore is presented by Olivander.
So, we have Harry commenting actively on how the blackthorn wand doesn't work well. But even before that, Ron struggled with a hand-me-down wand, and the books emphasize that wands are mercurial in a way. Harry is successful with Draco's wand because he overcame Draco. He can wield the Elder wand for a similar wand-lore reasons. Voldemort is shown using a variety of wands, but they aren't ideal and he is constantly seeking the right wand to defeat Harry.
But Harry and Hermione wield each other's wands without trouble from the get-go.
There's a few places in the books where magic is implied to signal underlying compatibility. James and Lily's patronuses are the obvious example. So it feels meaningful (though certainly unintentional) that Harry and Hermione - who have very different wands - are evidenced to use each other's wands without issue.
Particularly, it seems odd that Hermione can use Harry's wand so readily when Harry's wand is one of the most deeply magical in the series. Of all the wands we meet, the three most magically special in the series are the Elder Wand, Voldemort's, and Harry's.
So this girl who is in no way tied (other than her deep affection for Harry) to that entire deal can just use Harry's very magical wand? Really?
Just feels like another moment where the story knew what it wanted to be before it was contorted into what it became.
