THE OUTSIDE

Ginger Quinn knows what she wants and knows exactly how to get it. She's a sparkly glass bottle filled to the brim with beauty, brains, and bitch with a nice silk bow tied at the front. So one night, Ginger had gotten a call from a friend that said she was in a party out of town and in some trouble which of course was just a ploy to get G to come down there even though she’d refused the invitation

In a rush and frantic, on her way over Ginger was trying to beat a yellow light when unfortunately, a pedestrian had decided to take their chances on running into the street and the next thing she knew, Ginger hit them with her car and knocked them clean out. When she realized what had happened her fight or flight responses kicked in…guess which one she chose…

Terrified and in shock, Ginger called the police and drove away. She kept on driving. And driving. And driving and driving and driving until she found a 24 hour auto repair shop about 2 hours away who were thankfully able to fix the damage within the same day. After paying with cash she stopped at the side of the road, had a really good cry and began making her way back.

-After a few hours of frantically scanning the news she finally found that the hit and run had been reported and the victim was thankfully resting in the hospital. Ginger sent the person teddy bears and get well soon cards (anonymously of course)

It took her a few weeks to get back to normal, or whatever her new normal was, and to continue on with her life hoping to leave everything behind…That was until she realized that the person she hit is a resident.  Ginger almost lost her shit when she saw this person at the grocery store.

it took a lot in antoinette to even just get up from up her bed, get dressed and be present in devon's funeral. she knew he would want her here, and that she would regret it for the rest of her life if she didn't take the chance to say goodbye. the mask she had been putting on for days ever since he died slipped and she cannot hold her grief to herself and hide it. she had been too shaken up to even just stay in the room. she had found herself heading out for air a couple of times. she had been used to losing people, but the way she had lost somebody she had referred to as her brother...the pain was excruciating.

after the service, she had almost sprinted out of there just to let the tears fall, she didn't want to break down for people to see. the dancer actually prefers to deal with her feelings in her own. the quietness of the spot she's found was just enough to hear somebody walking up to her, hearing the dead leaves crunch beneath their feet. "sorry...i...it's just gettiing fuckin' hard to be there." she says, letting out a shaky breath. "i just can't fuckin' believe all this."

Nothing about today felt real. Not even the people around her. Whenever anyone spoke, their words felt a million miles away. Like she was alone in her own space of darkness and they were all just passing through it. After a while, the effort of pretending to be present became too much. The weight of everything was already heavy enough without having to hear I’m sorry for your loss over and over again.

Relief finally hit the moment she pushed through the doors and stepped outside. She wasn't sure what felt better, their air hitting her face, or taking the breath she didn't realize she was holding. Her fingers played with the bracelet around her wrist as she started down the steps. She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t notice she’d drifted toward Antoinette until she was already there. Her head lifted slightly, surprise flickering across her features as she took the other girl in. “I know,” she said softly. Genevieve slipped her purse open, rummaging for a moment before pulling out a small pack of tissues. “Here.” She opened it and held it out to her.

Her pause was longer than she intended. She felt like her brain was active but dormant at the same time. G was thankful for the apology, it gave her something to respond to as she wasn't sure if she could answer the first question yet. "It's fine." Not wanting to let silence swallow them up completely, she lifted her head to look at Maisie. "How did you know Dev?"

The tension always lingered nearby when she found herself in the same room as Genevieve. She could feel the thickness of unresolved issues whenever she got close. But today, she didn't care about petty drama and hurt feelings. Josie just wanted to get through this and she thought maybe the other girl felt the same way too. "It's so Devon coded for this place to be packed. He could never do anything small or under the radar."

Genevieve almost snorted at Josie's comment. Curling the corner of her lips momentarily was the best she could do. Not quite a smile but not a full on frown either. "Dev was the biggest attention whore." Though her voice was full of rasp and and heaviness, she managed a small smile that came as soon as it went. She wrapped her arms around herself and looked out at the crowd. "It's just so fucking insane." She paused a beat before continuing. "The way that you can really never predict anything." Her tone dipped even more, her bottom lip now tucked between her teeth.

maisie hated funerals - although, didn't everyone ?? she wasn't even sure if she belonged here, she was an acquaintance of devon's at best. but still, maisie knew she needed to go and say her final goodbye. it didn't help that she was stuck in the same itchy black dress her mother had picked out for her abuelita's funeral - the one she'd sworn she'd never wear again. funerals were usually a sad occasion, but this felt...heavier. maisie couldn't get her head around any of it.

there was only so much small talk she could take. slipping out before anyone could stop her, maisie made her way outside, drawing in a quiet breath of fresh air - only to pause when she realised she wasn't alone. ❝ hey. do you mind if i stay out here for a little bit ?? i just...needed a moment. ❞ she asked softly, careful not to intrude. her hand dipped into her bag, pulling out a cigarette. ❝ do you mind ?? i've got one with your name on it, if you want to join me. ❞

Her head lifted at the sound of Maisie’s voice. “It’s fine.” It was more than fine, actually. Genevieve was starting to realize the weight of everything felt a little less suffocating when she wasn’t alone. She shook her head lightly. “I don’t smoke.” Her gaze drifted back down to the bracelet wrapped around her wrist. One of the few tangible things she had left of him. For a moment, she didn’t say anything. Then she shifted slightly, scooting over just enough to make space. Normally she would’ve preferred to sit in silence, but that clearly wasn’t working. And somewhere in the back of her mind she could almost hear Devon’s voice nagging her to stop shutting people out when she needed them most. “You wanna sit?”

Callan was the type to always put on a brave face, hide his emotions and be the clown to make others laugh but today was not one of those days. He'd love to keep pretending this wasn't effecting him but the funeral broke him. It meant that the recent events were real and there was no pretending anymore. Devon was gone. His best friend just gone like he was nothing. "This shit sucks."

Glossed lips pressed together, Genevieve nodded her head. There weren't enough words in the world to make any sense of this. "I think this is the first day that this actually feels real." she whispered. Her grief in her throat carried too much weight for her to speak in her normal volume. She was thinking about all the times she'd taken his laugh for granted. His jokes his smile. She would give absolutely anything to listen to another one of his dumb conspiracy theories just one more time. Her fingers tightened around the friendship bracelet he made her in elementary school. "Have you been getting any sleep?" she asked. Her eyes trained on the floor below them. G wasn't sure she had the strength for eye contact yet.

“mm…” arden winced, the result of the haircut written all over her face. “i don’t think there’s any saving it. she’s going to need some cute headbands and clips to survive those bangs.” she teased, before glancing over at genevieve, noticing how distracted she was — honestly, she felt the same with the funeral coming up. “do you at least have another mannequin? maybe that one will have a fighting chance.”

A small smile ghosted over Genevieve’s lips. She wasn’t exactly in the mood to joke, but she appreciated the light it added to the moment. “I guess I’ll just have to keep her locked away in my closet for the rest of her life,” she said, turning the mannequin away from her. “Yeah… I’ll bring her sister out for future hairstyles. Hopefully word doesn’t get around about how shit I am at bangs when I’m running on five hours of sleep.” She hesitated for a second before glancing back at Arden. “You wanna sit?” she asked. Her voice a little quieter this time. “I’ve got another can of twisted tea in my purse and no one to share it with.”

"Isn't that the in style now?" He was the last person to be asking about hairstyles, he got a buzz cut every time and didn't care to change it up. "I feel like I've seen a few alternative chicks the the short bang thing, it doesn't look cute to me but each to their own." He shrugged as he walked closer to the mannequin to get a good look. "You could always braid it back in and hope the mannequin doesn't ask questions."

“The children yearn for fucked up bangs I guess.” After examining the rest of the hair on the mannequin, she set it back down and placed the scissors beside it with a quiet tap. “Curly bangs are in, thank God… I just need to make sure this doesn’t happen with my twelve o’clock tomorrow.” Ginger ran a hand through her hair before looking up at Enzo, a faint, self aware smile tugging at her lips. “Well, if you ever want bangs, at least now you know who not to go to.”

even though she knew it was a rhetorical question, alex contorted her features in a manner that said 'absolutely not' in a better way than any words possibly could. she didn't mean anything by it, but the other looked like one of those i'll play mini golf when hell freezes over types. more likely to be found in, like, a mall or something. alex wasn't sure what kind of recreational activities the rich and mighty got up to in their free time.

"i mean, there are some hella obstacles out there tryna prevent you achievin' your victorious hole in one. wait until you get to the dragon on hole 9, that shit wild, bro," alex commented as her hands found her hoodie pockets. "as neatly as you've just lined up an any hole is a goal joke for me, nah, there's like a whole course and shit to go through, start at 1 and... i think it goes up to like, 12 or 13?" she shrugged. "but, i mean, mini golf is usually like... played in pairs? if you want some competition, it's not like i'm overrun with customers, i can show ya the ropes?"

Genevieve was not sure if she was intrigued or confused. Perhaps a bit of both. The corner of her lips twitched upwards anyways. A response even she hadn't expected. It was something about the lack of seriousness Alex seemed to carry. A trait she often wished she could take on. "This is gonna be ridiculous." She said half to herself. "But what the hell, let's go." How hard could it be? "Fuck the beginner holes. Take me to the dragon." Probably not the wisest choice but she didn't come here to be bored.

It was probably odd, the fact that Genevieve was practicing a new style on her mannequin head at the beach, but lately nothing she seemed to do made sense. The beach was calming, peaceful and quiet. The complete opposite of the salon she used to love walking into everyday. And she still did, but everything was much more bleak than usual nowadays. With her best friends funeral coming up, she was doing everything she could to distract herself. Even if it meant practicing cutting hair on a portable desk at the beach. "Shit" She had cut the bangs just a little too high. Feeling the presence of someone else behind her she let out a defeated sigh. "Please tell me it isn't as bad as it looks."

Alex caught the mutter, and to be honest, based on the click-clack symphony that echoed around the reception as the other came through the door, she would be lying if she said she wouldn't ask the same question. Although after recent events, for whatever reason, Putt Stop had become busier than it had been in a while. Certainly not the new top attraction in town, but a noticeable uptick. Alex hadn't thought much of it, to be honest, then again, did she ever give much thought to anything? Not really.

The question put her on the back foot, though. "How does... Mini golf work?" She repeated, brows furrowing slightly before returning to neutral. "Oh, well, you, er, you get yourself one of these," she said, picking up a putter and placing it on the desk, "and one of these," she added a red ball, "and you use that," indicating to the putter, "to get that," indicating to the ball, "into a hole." She wasn't sure if that was what the other meant, but start simple and work up, right? "And, if you get a hole in one, you get... Sickkk bragging rights."

Genevieve let out a quiet sigh, her chocolate brown orbs flickered briefly toward the ceiling at the echo of her own question. A faint pinch of embarrassment settled in her chest. "Do I look like I've ever played mini golf before?" The question was sarcastic but her words came out soft. Her eyes, earnest. It was more of an honest reveal about herself. No real bite or edge. Just a small unguarded truth. Her features softened as she listened to the Alex explain the game. She nodded her head with watchful eyes. "Um...Okay." She exhaled now feeling a tad lighter than before. But not fully absolved of the heaviness. Alex's bragging rights comment earned her an eye roll from G. But this time it was one accompanied by a smile. One that she tried to hold in but failed to do so. "Sounds easy enough." She picked up the putter and ball, her eyes examining them with curiosity. "Um." Her attention turned to the environment around them before landing back on Alex. "So I just pick any hole?"

like most days, alex wasn't exactly fully there whilst she sat - or more accurately, slumped - behind the front desk of the job she had once said would be a couple-month gig to get some money to pay off her debts and get her life on track. that was... what? five years ago now? six? time flies when you're having fun. she wasn't complaining though, it was an easy job, not exactly well paid, but it kept the shitty roof above her head and almost covered the bills. and, most importantly, nobody gave the slightest shit if she was hungover, high, coming down, late, early, blah blah blah.

the ding of the bell above the door as it swung open brought her semi out of her daydreaming, which was more like just staring into the void and thinking about as little as humanly possible. "welcome to putt stop where every hole is a hole-in-fun," she said dryly without looking away from the spot in the wall that had captivated her last 45 minutes. "what can i do ya for?" she asked, finally glancing to her new company.

"What in the hell am I even doing here?" Genevieve muttered to herself. For one of the first times in her life she felt extremely out of place. Her Louboutin boot heels clicked with each step that she took as she glanced around in confusion. She knew she was desperate to get Devin off of her mind, but was she really this desperate? Golf? A game she had never played in her life. Deciding that she'd now have to resort to another distraction, she turned around and began to walk out. The golf attendant welcoming her in was what stopped her. She paused. Her eyes going from the environment back to Alex. Fuck it. She thought to herself.

"Do you think it's a good idea?" Fran asked nervously. "Or do you think people will think it's insensitive to raise money through my stream to donate to Devon's family or funeral or just anything?" She rambled on as she came to a sudden stop to catch her breath. Fran had been pondering the thought since the news had broke. Suddenly she gasped slightly, hand resting on her chest as she looked at the other in fear. "What if they cancel me?"

"Kay, calm down." There were too many questions and not enough time to collect her thoughts. Or mask what she was truly feeling every time his name had been brought up. "Wait, who gives a fuck if they cancel you?" The last part of Fran's sentence took a few extra seconds for Genevieve to process. "Is this about your followers or is this actually about Devon?"

Of course, Genevieve wasn't her first choice. Not anymore. But when times are tough, sometimes you have to turn to the things you just might up regretting later on down the road. "Right now, yeah, I could." Josie found it hard not to give into the snark on the other ones lips, and though she usually had something to give right back, the energy level of the redhead today was keeping all those nasty remarks tucked deeper inside than she cared to dig for. "Someone died, G. Someone that we both care for, can't we like be there for each other for five minutes at least."

Her glossed lips pursed at the earnest tone of Josie's voice. Her jaw clenched at the mention of Devin. She began to wonder when or if remembering him was going to stop feeling like a stab to the heart. "Can we not-" Genevieve exhaled. She had heard a thousand times how un helpful it was to avoid feelings, but avoidance was familiar to her. Familiarity brought her comfort. It was something she needed, but something she couldn't ask for. "Fine." Was all she said next. "I didn't come here to antagonize you, I didn't even see you sitting here. I didn't even know you hung around here much anymore..."

" shit, shit, shit, sorry " the white surfboard was tossed against sand before kaya ran straight towards tiki tide. it was a rather empty night at the bar and after a bartender had to go home early she thought a swim would do no harm. that is until a client showed up. Kaya's urgency surprised Genevieve. With the kind of day she was having, she really couldn't complain. Sure, every now and then reminders of Devon crept back into her mind, but today she seemed to be free of the ruminating. For now. "It's fine." Her eyes scanned over Kaya as she took in her state. "I'm not gonna bite your head off. Unless you get sand or salt water in my drink, then that's a different story. I'll take a strawberry daiquiri."

Josie felt like her brain hadn't shut off since the night she found out about Devon. Between sleeping too much and not being able to sleep at all, she was exhausted and figured that some sun might be able to help with it all. She brushed her hair out of her face as she laid on one of the many empty chaise lounges alongside the pool, letting out a heavy sigh as she tried to take in her current surroundings. Feeling a tinge of hope pop up in her chest when her eyes met another person that seemed to have the same idea as her, "Take the one next to me, pleaseeee." Dragging out the word to try to convince them more. "I really could use the company today."

Genevieve sighed softly and took a seat with her back to Josie. She was completely unaware of who she was sitting next to. The only thing on her mind was finally being able to set down everything in her hands, kicking back, and relaxing. Right as she had finished packing her things in her purse, she heard Josie's voice and froze. I'm going to regret this, aren't I? She slowly turned her body, propped her legs up on the chair and leaned back. She made sure to put her sunglasses on and keep her eyes forward. Her true feelings hidden beneath the tinted lenses. "You could use a lot of things, I'm sure."

The smell of wet earth and dewy grass filled her nose as the rain fell softly and the wind was still. Right now, the grounding scent that reminded her of much calmer times was the only thing holding her together. Diary in hand and clothes and hair slightly damp, Genevieve was currently at Holly's front door. Her arms were wrapped around herself due to the slightly chilly weather. Coming here wasn't a planned decision. No call, no text, Genevieve was out the door and before she knew it, here she was. Knocking on Holly's door and waiting for her to come out. She couldn't help but be brought back to where she was 5 years ago. In this exact spot, completely heartbroken, wondering why the person she loved had just up and left. Though it felt similar, it also felt different. Genevieve was still scared but she didn't care about that. The only thing she cared about was the person who was behind that door. Her left knee bounced from the anxiety she felt rushing through her veins whilst she waited for a response.
