So I have this random Gillian Hewley headcanon.

I like to think she was the actual brains behind Project G. Shinra being the stereotypical toxic workplace that it was (especially in the 70s), let Hollander take the credit for it. All records show Gillian as the "lead subject", but she was pretty much formulating all the theories and hypotheses that they were testing out.

Hojo calls Hollander a hack who "can't even cure a cold" not just because Project G failed, but because he knows that anything of value that they learnt from project G was due to Gillian's work.

That's also why Genesis was eventually trying to seek Gillian's help to cure his degradation. Because he also eventually learnt that the actual research behind G type cells was all Gillian.

lets make this as quick as possible. because it was wrong in how it felt so right to be back in a lab once more. it was wrong to feel the hum of electricity beneath her skin and it felt normal. she had studied, interned, put in so many hours for a project- her project.

only to regret. only to lose. only to find herself in banora. raising her son with a husband. a kind man who overlooked that she had a child with an unknown father.

now a widower and that child now a teenager enlisting for this very company she was brought below. if angeal wasn't away. if genesis wasn't away. if her husband hadn't died then she would've never come or agreed. but they were all gone and shinra had sent turks to her step to request a consult. to pick her mind and review materials. test subjects. she knew failure and they wanted her to tell her what she spotted of it.

what she hadn't expected was the ivory child. large eyes that saw and knew too much. a child beneath the building, hidden away as a test subject and likely had never had a day or a moment of innocence. she was glad that angeal at least had that.

"weiss." she spoke quietly and warmly. "my name is dr. hewley."

"I always wondered if you'd be back after that husband of yours died."

Gillian's eyes flashed, head snapping towards her former partner, Hollander, as fury held tight in her eyes and venom dripped. "Don't speak about my husband. Ever."

"Then I'll leave you to speak with Genesis then. To explain matters." Hollander chuckled before stepping out of the infirmary room, leaving her alone with Genesis. Heart thundering she listened and waited for the door to shut, eyes cast down on the ground, tracing the lines of the polished white floor before looking up to him.

He had grown so much since the last time she had seen him.

Tall, lean, and still remarkably curious and passionate. She could see the depth of passion, confusion and the beginnings of rage. A million questions and she could answer them. She should've answered and told him and Angeal long ago when they insisted on joining Shinra and their newfound SOLDIER program. A program she knew they'd eventually enact. Somehow she should've known Hojo and Lucretia would continue to pursue and be successful in their project.

"I'm sorry its come to this, Genesis." She managed out, shaking her head deeply. "I had rather hoped this day would never arrive, but...here we are."

Gillian took a step forward, hands clasped in front of her with a soft exhaling breath. "I'm sure you're confused and have questions for me. I'll answer them. All of them."

"oh, genesis, sweet boy." because he was sweet and kind and clever. always thinking quickly and brushing past. he was like a bird that could fly to highest pinnacles and sweep down low. rushing quickly from one thought then peering with eyes that saw so much more. angeal had a habit of sitting and mulling on matters, but not genesis.

genesis questioned more. moved faster. was ever so much more eager now and then.

"i do." she nodded at the young teenager. "you'll remember this later. when experience can show you more than my words can. just tuck into your heart that you achieve now doesn't reflect on who you are. that you always have a future to still work towards. don't be dismayed by the present or despair over the works of others."
