“you know what I was thinking? this is crazy– so, like, if you could choose, would you rather, like, know the date of your death– the day you’re gonna die, no way to change it, no matter what it is, or know the cause of your death, like a car accident or something, and nearly pee your pants every time you pull up to an intersection?” if it weren’t for the cover of darkness, one might have noticed his red-rimmed eyes and understood immediately where this was coming from, and why they just ran into him returning from the lake so late at night. that is, if the scent lingering on his clothing didn’t already reveal all they needed to know. he sinks into one of the adirondack chairs surrounding dagwood’s main firepit, head cocking to one side in consideration. “don’t answer that,” he says, “because i just thought of something even crazier.” suddenly overcome by a cough, he bends an elbow to block his mouth. “alright,” he says, offering up the weed to share again. “and– i’m being serious. like, i’m so freaking serious right now. i know everyone thinks i’m out of my mind for considering hotdogs sandwiches. but hear me out on this one: is cereal… a soup? and is there any way – at all – that you could get me into the mess hall right this very second to have some?” @dagwoodstart​

            in  a  bit  of  a  daze, luka  listens  to  the  other  speak.  he  slouches  completely  into  the  chair. considering  devin’s  question  fully  --  despite  being  told  not  to  answer  it  in  the  first  place.  shoving  another  four  jumbo  marshmallows  into  his  mouth,  the  brunette  only  offers  a  slow  shrug  in  response  at  first.  last  time  he  tried  to  talk  with  chewing  marshmallows  he  nearly  choked.   finally  a  small  chuckle  leaves  him,  “you  make  a  good  point!  i  don’t  think  your  crazy  dude.”  he  turns,  pointing  a finger  at  the  other  male.  “you’re  a  thinker.  a  real  smart....er... smarterer  person.”  luka  giggles  again,  words  not  falling  into  place  as  easily  as  they  normally  might’ve.  then  again,  under  more  sober  circumstance  he   still  probably  didn’t  know  another  word  for  smart.  “oh,  it’s  definitely  just  sweet  soup.  you  know,  i  heard  someone  say  it  was  a  salad?  i  mean,  come  on!  salad  means  lettuce.”  he  pauses,  just  about  to  put  another  bundle  of  marshmallows  into  his  mouth.  “well ,  yeah.  i  can.  they  always  forget  to  lock  that  back  window -- i  just  climbed  right  through.”  he  replies,  raising  the  bag  of  marshmallows  that  were  likely  reserved  for  the  campers  to  make  s’mores.

        “listen,  that  isn’t  my  idea!   my  friends  would  be  so  pissed  if  i  shared.  i  just,”  luka  hesitates.  it  sucks  being  a  terrible,  terrible  liar.  “it’s  in  a  safe  space.  i  will  not  spill  the  beans.”  despite  the  words  being  on  the  tip  of  his  tongue.

      “  DUDE, i hate to have to break it to you, but gym teachers are not cool.  i mean, there are outliers, but overwhelmingly ? it just kinda feels like the job for dudes who swore up and down for years that they’d go pro but couldn’t make it. my cousin’s a gym teacher, and guy is still bitter that he got the watered down, 5′8 genes, because clearly that’s all that’s keeping him out of the nba, ”  he rambles. justin snickers before biting the inside of his cheek. he hates to be the killjoy, there’s nothing he wants more than to pry and pick around in whatever this prank was going to be, but he knew he needed to draw a line: but it’d be a faint one if he did.  “  yeah, man, keep me out of the loop on that one. maybe that’s my spot this summer: being pleasantly surprised with whatever bullshit you all get into instead of a borderline accomplice.  ”

           luka  chews  his  lower  lip,  listening  to  the  other .  tilting  his  head  slowly  as  he  realizes  something,  “woah,  you  think  i’m  gonna  become  a  gym  teacher?” afterall,  he  did  swear  up  and  down  for  the  entirety  of  his  highschool  career  that  her  would get  a  swim  scholarship  or  go  to  the  olympics.  it  felt  like  justin  was  describing  him  a  few  years  from  now.   luka  raises  his  brows.  ryan  told  him  not  to  tell  anyone  about  the  pranks --  especially  not  the  higher  up  staff.  everything  just  seemed  to  slip  right  out  of   his  mouth  the  minute  he  saw  justin.  he  trusted  him. “ ah,  man  i  wasn’t  supposed  to  say  anything.  don’t  tell  ryan  about  that.”  he  shakes  his  head.  “it’s  really  good  though.  best  one  in  the  history  of  dagwood. ”

           “ well  ryan  told  me  not  to  tell  anybody  about  that.”  the  brunette  shrugs.  “but  i  know  a  guy  who  knows  a  guy  who  could  get  you  something.”

  HE’S STILL SETTLING. it’s strange, since dagwood is someone so familiar to justin, to be pushed into having to reacquaint to it this summer with his new position. what he hadn’t considered was the pressure. he was ready to put in the work, he loved the work. but the pressure he felt, to make sure that he was meeting the expectations, keeping up with what needed to be done to make sure this summer runs smoothly. he takes a deep breath before nervously drumming his fingers on the mess-hall table he’d set up at. he skimmed his clipboard for a moment before he wrinkled his nose. he picked up the clipboard, and held it in his arm. he looked to the person closest by. “ be honest. does this make me look like a tool ? because i feel like it brings a whole uptight gym-teacher vibe to what i’m working with. ” @dagwoodstart​

            “gym  teachers  are  cool.”  luka  replies  simply,  an  encouraging  smile  tugging  at  his  lips.  this  isn’t  his  first  go  round  as  a  lifeguard.  he  has  settled  in  with  ease.  falling  back  into  camp  life  was  like  riding  a  bike,  luka  could  never  really  forget.   if  anything,  luka’s  excited  about  this  summer.  though,  he  can  understand  justin  might  not  feel  so  eager.  being  lifeguard  isn’t  nearly  as  much  pressure.  “you  look  really  professional.  smart,  even.”  though,  it  isn’t  hard  to  appear  smart  to  someone  like  luka.  everyone’s  smart  in  his  eyes.  “how  you  feeling?  i’m  stoked.  ryan  and  i  have  the  coolest  prank  idea  --  sorry,  i  can’t  spoil  it. ”

Elliot all but collapses face first — the couch in the staff lounge rank to say the least. ( He’s heard rumors, after all. Of spills, and sex, and vomit – all provided by the counselors of years past. The unmentionable stains suddenly seeming too disgusting to consider. Surely they should’ve tossed this old thing out years ago? ) Though, after the particularly involved afternoon he’s had … he’s in need of a blissfully long nap wherever he first lands. ( And maybe a hit off a joint if the opportunity presents itself. ) He lifts his head momentarily, his gaze bleary. “— Tell me the truth,” He implores, “Do the kids somehow seem – I mean, I don’t know – worse this year…? Or am I just, like, having a bad day?” Eli shakes his head. “Granted, dodgeball might’ve been a bad idea to begin with… but I swear, it’s like they were aiming for my face.”

           cheeto  dust  coats  the  brunette's  fingers.  a  perk  of  being  lifeguard,   frequent  snack  breaks.  or  at  least,  luka  has  created  his  own  frequent  snack  breaks.  whether or  not  those  are  permitted  is  still  out  for  debate.  he  smiles  as  soon  as  eli  settles  next  to  him,  offering  him  a  chip  from  the  bag.  “worse?  not  at  all. ”  as  if  luka  could  ever  say  anything  mean  about  the  campers.  even  when  they  pull  pranks  on  the  very  gullible  lifeguard --  he  naturally  just  laughs  it  off.   “i  think  they’re  really  cool  this  year.  it’s  mostly  the  same  one’s  from  last  year.”  he  laughs,  “oh  dude,  no!  not  a  dodgeball  to  the  face.  i’m  surprised  you  aren’t  bruised  or  something.”

( 02 / muse 5 / cismale & he/him  ) contrary to what the campers might tell you, that’s not gavin leatherwood. that’s luka donahue! this is their 4th year working here and they’re a lifeguard. they’re 24, and i just found out during ice breakers they’re a pisces. at first they might seem pretty facetious, but they’re actually really magnanimous . when they have down time, you can usually catch them hiding snacks in his cabin. try to get to know them for yourself this summer!

born luka gabriel gilbert, his biological mother’s a bit of a mystery. she didn’t really leave much of a trace behind once she dropped him off at the police station when he was about a month old. so from then on he hopped around a few foster homes, which weren’t always the greatest towards him but he was way too young to remember alot of it now.

at age 3, he’d get adopted by the donahue’s – a moderately well off family in salem, oregon who looked into adoption after their biological children grew up and left the nest. luka fit right in, making him feel right at home.  

after that his life was honestly pretty smooth sailing. elementary through highschool was relatively easy for him. maybe not the academic side of school but, the social side. he’s always been charming and athletic. so, he was the kid who could befriend just about everyone. did a plethora of sports throughout his childhood but eventually joined the swim team in highschool.  

a dagwood frequent growing up -- literally went every summer. certainly the biggest clown around. pulling pranks, joking around. 

didn’t land the swim scholarship he’d hoped for literally the entirety of highschool ( that was the only way he’d get into college with his grades ksdfgja ), so he just started working , sifting through alot of jobs ( aka getting fired from alot of jobs ) before landing on a small bar in town.

he’s a irresponsible guy and  pretty impulsive. he’d do pretty much anything if there’s a promise of fun attached to it. more socially motivated more than anything, so he’ll rarely say no to anything his friends are up to doing. has been arrested for this reason thanks to being so willing to befriend literally anyone and getting mixed up in the wrong crowd.

easily excitable. outside of sports, movies, and music ( i’ve just /decided/ he loves the 1975 so there’s that )  – he’ll love to talk about almost anything. as long as it doesn’t get too serious cause he can’t be serious for very long or he’ll get actively sad and he doesn’t know how to… be sad. his main emotions are excited, happy, and mildly annoyed. that’s about it sjgas

not eloquent in talking about the way he feels / thinks about anything ever. him crushing on someone is like “ they’re really nice.” tends to be very surface in relationships, just cause he’s got some emotional growing up to do. as bubbly and warm as he is, he doesn’t talk much about himself to most people. you’ll have a 3 hour, great conversation about him and realize all he really said about himself was his name skgjafs
