when one of the characters in a book is self depreciating for an annoying amount of time it reminds me of this friends on discord who always compliment fish.

for context I’m reading a book, and there’s a side story. There’s a princess, Pip. There’s a stableman, Val. They are in love. She declares her love and he says no despite feeling the same way. His reasoning? He does not want to bring her dishonor or tarnish her name through being with her. She’s sad. Later on, they talk again. One thing leads to another, they end up doing the devils tango. The next day she visits him and he says he REGRETS IT. He says that it never should have happened. THEN he’s like “you thought we would get married?” Like yes, you just took my virginity sir? And said you were in love with me? Then he said he didn’t want her to live the life he’s lived. Like AHHHH

He blinked at me for several heartbeats. The horse nearest us huffed a hot breath, and Valerian sighed alongside her. “Soon we’ll return home. You’ll be back to your life… to your future. And that doesn’t include me.”

His words came like a smack, bringing blood rushing to my cheeks, my face warming. “What do you mean it doesn’t include you?”
