things were FINALLY settling down in alexandria after the walkers had taken over the quaint town. glenn, enid, sasha, abraham, and daryl were back. and they were relatively UNHARMED, which everyone was thankful for. carl however, well it was still touch and go.

denise had done her best with the SUPPLIES they had, and now it was just a waiting game. but maggie knew if anyone could survive it, it would be carl. the boy had been through so much, had LOST so much. but he was a fighter - just like his father.

moving quietly through the infirmary, she gently knocked on the door frame, seeing rick sitting beside the bed. “RICK,” she almost whispered, stepping further into the room and putting a hand on his shoulder. “you’ve been in here for a long time. why don’t we get you somethin’ toEAT? you can take a nap. daryl can sit with carl until you get back. if he wakes up or anythin’ changes, they’ll get you. i PROMISE.”

carl was a reminder of why luck was a main factor in surviving, it didn’t matter if you were strong & quick, in the end, death always crept up on you. it could have been anyone. it could of been rick. if that gun had aimed differently, then he could’ve been the one partially blind & suffering from whatever side effects were to come with it. he half expected his son to wake up braindead or with some form of memory loss. what if he didn’t recognise him? what if he didn’t know he was his father anymore? it would kill him, it would be his final defeat. a world without his son was not a world he wanted to continue living in.

but judith --

his daughter still needed him, his people still needed him. how long did they have before death slowly crept up on them too? it’s like he waited for it, he expected it. he’d watched so many people he cared about wither away & die. lori, shane, hershel, andrea.... the list went on and on. an endless list of the people who could’ve made it if only luck had been on their side. why was it on his? why did he deserve to keep going?

he’d been dozing off when maggie had entered the room his son resided in, resting on his death bed. he was in fact pulling through -- for now -- his body forcing itself to keep going, to keep surviving. his head raised once he’d heard her voice, the last surviving greene. he’d grown so fond of her family, but had soon lost all of them too. if only he’d tried harder to keep them around.

❝ -- i’m not hungry. i don’t need it. ❞

he was so determined on keeping his son alive, food didn’t even cross his mind. he didn’t feel hungry, he didn’t feel like he needed it just yet. he would eat when he needed to. he turned his attention from his fallen son & to maggie instead -- he was broken, a shattered man.

❝ y’know, lori would never of forgiven me for this. not this. it was my fault, i shoulda been watching him. it was on my watch... ❞

sometimes, when he had time, he would wander outside the walls of his safe haven -- alexandria -- & into the forest. he wasn’t entirely sure why he did it, maybe it was to practice on walkers or find supplies that could come in handy. with a machete in one hand & a flashlight in the other, he wandered around what appeared to be an empty forest. it was when he heard the snap of a twig that he stopped & lowered himself into the darkness.

parker stood far away ( 10 feet , 3 inches ) , down the asphalt , behind a TREE . she could CLEARLY see the DIRTY man , she’d been following him . not to HURT him , to steal any of his BELONGINGS - just to simply OBSERVE . he looked like he’d been through a lot , but hadn’t the ALL ? nevertheless , she kept her DISTANCE , tried to remain QUIET as she continued after him , hidden .

it was good for him to get away from it all. yes, his son needed him & yes alexandria would fall without him but ten minutes away wouldn’t do any harm. he needed to breathe, to wrap his head around everything that had happened. they needed their leader & he needed his son -- if carl didn’t pull through & wake up normal, he wasn’t sure he could do it anymore. he wasn’t sure he could lead without the only reason he truly kept going. he was doing all of this for his kids, to give them a better future -- one without blood and trauma. he stood tall, staring into the forest ahead of their safe haven. maybe he could do some exploring whilst he was out here.
