heres my self portrait
did you know that if you dont vibe with all the black t shirts dan and phil keep selling you can make your own
hi !! a couple people said they wanted to make this so here's the pattern + some of my notes
i used the CY1716 Ladies Vest Cygnet DK free pattern as a base (the cygnetyarns website isnt great to navigate but hopefully that works) and i made my own charts.
this is worked in flat stockingnette with some ribbing. i used 4mm needles (3.5mm for the ribbing) and it took me about six weeks including designing the charts. i would say this is a pretty easy project if you have any experience at all with intarsia. mine came out to the perfect length for me but keep in mind im like 5'1.
use whatever your preferred fibre is. i used acrylic. the background yarn i used is james c brett swurly wurly. it had lots of knots in it, i would not recommend. i would say avoid any self striping yarn for this project because the intarsia will mess with the size of the stripes and give you hours of extra work. the other colours are just hobbycraft own brand. you can mess around with the colour scheme in anyway you like, just make sure the colours contrast each other enough (you can see i didnt pay much attention to this and some elements fade into the background)
if you dont knit but wanna use these charts for something like crochet or cross stitch go ahead !! but be careful because the back chart is not square !! knit stitches are longer than they are tall and this chart reflects that. the back will come out distorted if you try to crochet it. i have no idea how obvious it would be so feel free to give it a go. howeverrrr the front chart is square so you can use that one for any craft you like.
here is the back chart. its 100 stitches wide and i cast on 106. i did the ribbing, then ten rows of st st and then started the chart. the black lines are marking the decreases for the armholes which you can use or choose to ignore. when you finish the chart, just continue following the pattern (some more arm decreases and then neck shaping). you can view this chart on chartminder here which has a mode to highlight the current row youre knitting so you dont lose your place. and you can edit the chart on there too if theres anything you want to change. i did all of this in intarsia but you can absolutely do the smaller details like the face in embroidery or duplicate stitch if you prefer.
here is the front chart (not on chartminder cus i figured it was too small to bother with that). hold the back up against you and figure out where you wanna place this so you know which row to start the chart on. then just follow the pattern.
keep these photos around as reference for placement and colours (yes the graphics on the original are smaller than on mine. i like the big chunky look)
i stopped to weave in ends every few rows so i didnt have much to do at the end. the pattern is written so you sew up one seam, work the ribbing flat, then sew up the other side. i decided to sew everything up and then work the ribbing in the round. do it whichever way you prefer.
if you make anything with my charts PLEASE PLEASE I WANNA SEEEEE SHOW ME YOUR PROJECTS. and remember: dont cry craft <3
hi!!
so i did make one of these vests for myself, at the time i had not seen this chart in the tags lol so i just got the chart myself through stitchfiddle but here it is if you wanna see!! thank you so much for sharing this amazing project <3 (apologies that my photos aren’t the most high quality lol)
holy shit only just seeing this AHHH SO CUTE I LOVEEEE the colours you went with are GORGEOUS im wowwww
hehehehe @danielhowell @amazingphil i knitted you
will rb with charts and pattern notes for anyone who wants to make one or just be nosey. i had ideas for more things to do with this hoodie so there might be updates teehee
this is made with 3.75mm needles. i sized down very slightly because it neatens up the colourwork. i started this in may so i guess it took like three and half months ish. its pretty easy for anyone who's familiar with intarsia. i recommend not bothering with bobbins and look up how to make yarn butterflies instead. this pattern also has casting on in the middle of the row and kitcheners stitch. they were new for me but easy to learn.
okay here's chart!!
you can view it on chartminder here. you can see i didnt clean up the big circle because i had planned to embroider it afterwards. so i left it as a guide. but then decided i liked it without the circle so i never used it. oh also phils hair is the darker accent blue i just forgot to change it in the chart (can you tell why im not selling these lol). chartminder lets you edit copies of other people's charts so y'know you can change that if it bothers you.
i used 100% cotton for this one (very exciting for me ive never done that before). i can make a list of the exact shades if anyone is interested but i just went into the yarn aisle and picked things out that looked close enough. just make sure they contrast a decent amount with your background colour. especially the main blue. you dont need more than a single 50g skein in each of the chart colours. i used 5 100g skeins of green background colour and 7 50g skeins of blue for the sleeves/hood/ears/pockets.
i used this sleeveless hoodie pattern. theres a paid and a free version. its pretty simple but definitely read it through first because the construction is something ive never seen before. i made a 2xl and its definitely biiiig (i usually wear a large). the pattern says start at back neck and work down but i decided to do the back backwards. i started with the bottom ribbing and worked up, decreasing for the neck. i think it was something like 205 rows? i counted very half heartedly but its obivously longer than the suggested measurement on the pattern. then i put the back neck stitches into a holder so they were easy to pick up for the hood.
when i seamed up the sides i left a space open for pockets. my pockets ended up being made of scraps but you cant see from the outside because the natural curl of stockinette stitch hides the openings in the seams. i did two garter stitch squares for each pocket (i cast them off with the three needle bind off which was very fun) and sewed around three and a half sides and then sewed them to the openings with the main colour. you can make the pockets any size just make sure they aren't hanging below the bottom ribbing.
i free handed the sleeves. i picked up 80 stitches around the armhole and then knitted in the round, decreasing at the beginning and end of every fifth row. then i realised it wasnt getting as small as i wanted and started decreasing every fourth row somewhere halfway down the arm. the sleeves are somewhere around 100 rows long. then i decreased four times in the last row and did 10 rows of 1x1 ribbing.
the ears are crochet. i used this pattern but started with chaining 9 instead of 7.
as always asks are open if you have questions. and it is a requirement to show me anything you make with this chart i want to seeeeeeeee. show me you art!!!!!
