cross game – ep 20
One thing I love, love, LOVE about slice of life anime is the silent moments. When a character is surprised, when someone wants to hide their feelings. A slight clenching of their jaws or a twitch of their eyes, a twitch of their fingers, and then the frame shifts and you only hear their voices, or the frame stays for a fraction of a second before the moment passes and you know. You just know. No need to overly explain about things. No need to lay out their feelings and inner thoughts for all to hear. You just know.
i think about this sequence of panels so much. . . the inherent desire in aoba to keep her sister alive in whatever capacity and how it manifests in her own hopes and dreams for kou, the tragedy and guilt tied to the fact that she’s the one who’s left and who has to carry that legacy, which inevitably brings her closer to kou despite the fact that she tries vehemently to hate him bc the time she had with wakaba before she died was taken up by him

cross game is so good at making a subtle narrative carry weight like there’s so many times where panels are purely scenic or atmospheric, or where someone says something that would otherwise feel trivial, and yet the plot surrounding those panels and speech lends so much context and makes it feel that much more impt like that’s really such a talent to have as a writer
