My day has been okay I suppose. I colored in the garden earlier.

I colored a picture for Alfred. It was some dinosaurs from the Jurassic period.

Oh man dinosaurs are amazing! I love that how through evolution we can trace them to modern birds and chickens. That’s super sweet thst you drew something for Alfred. Do you have a favorite dinosaur??

Yes I do! I really like the Micropachycephalosaurus. It’s super tiny with being only a few inches tall and wide and has one of if not the longest name of the dinosaurs. I didn’t draw that one though, I drew a Stegosaurus for Alfred because he said he likes those.

“Small Ma.”

Bruce scoots back, slightly frightened of the new person. He’s not very good with meeting new people yet. “Wh-What?”

Bunni coos softly before slowly moving, tucking their wings close to their back and sitting on the ground to appear smaller, less threatening.

“Hi.”

“Hello.” he says quietly, standing a little straighter. this person seems nice but why do they have animal features? “What’s your name?”

“Bunni.”

Their head tilts curiously and they tuck clawed hands under their legs, staying where they are sitting.

he wants to ask about their features but Alfred says asking about peoples appearances is rude so he doesn’t. “Its nice to meet you. I’m Bruce.” he introduces himself in a small voice, its timid and shy and nothing like what he would grow to be.

She coos softly, wanting to just reach out and tuck this smaller version of their Ma away to protect him and keep him safe. But they stay where they sit.

“Nice to meet you too, Bruce.”

It’s weird to call a version of their Ma anything but that.

he steps a little closer and looks at Bunni’s features, fascinated by their look. “You look really cool.” he didn’t think that was insulting so he said it.

They blink before preening at the compliment, feathers fluffing slightly before settling once more.

“Thank!”

“You’re welcome.” he reaches his hand out but quickly pulled it back. he can’t just touch this stranger, that would be rude.

of course timing is never on his side and what sounds like the screech of a bat is heard. To say this scared bruce would be an understatement. he yelped slightly and covered his ears, curling up into a ball right where he previously stood.

All previous restraint going out the window the moment Bunni hears Bruce’s yelp, right in front of him in an instant and cocooning him in their wings. Their hands hover, unsure if they’re allowed to touch as they give a stream of cornered chirps and coos.

Bruce reached and grabs Bunni’s shirt, quickly hiding in his chest and tears well up in his eyes, his breathing starting to become jagged

They don’t hesitate to hug him close, tucking his head under their chin and softly rubbing at his back. It’s quiet for a moment before Bunni starts to hum the tune their Ma hums for them.

Bruce freezes for a moment before starting to cry suddenly, the humming seeming to almost make it worse. He pulls back and looks up at Bunni while crying “You know mama’s song?” he says weakly

The humming dies in their throat with a whimper, suddenly remembering how you Bruce is, what would have happened recently for him, still fresh in the forefront of his mind.

Bunni gives a small nod, reach out to softly wipe his tears and adjust his fringe with careful movements.

“My Ma sings it to me, he learnt it from your Mama.”

He leans into Bunni’s touch, trying to calm down thought it’s not really working “Your ma knows my mama?”

They nod softly, holding him even closer.

“I’m, from a time ahead of yours.” They start with softly, trying to decide if they’re allowed should tell him of the family he’ll one day have.

“Oh. Okay..” he leans back into Bunni, hugging her and holding onto their shirt tightly

She gently runs a hand through his hair.

“Your Mama is my Ma’s Mama… it’s how he knows her song.”

Bruce makes a confused noise. He doesn’t have any siblings so that doesn’t make sense unless he was Bunni’s ma but that also doesn’t make sense “Huh?”

“You. You grow up and become a dad, and my Ma.”

They distantly realise maybe they could better explain this, but words were far from their strongest trait.

“Oh.. uhm okay.” it doesn’t make the best sense but it explains how Bunni knows his mama’s song. He wraps his small arms around Bunni and clings to him “I want to go home.”

Bunni holds him close, chittering quietly. It’s easy to figure he was probably talking more about the people he considered his home rather than the manor.

“I’m sorry…”

“I want my mama. And my dad.” he starts to cry again “I don’t like the dark. Or this stupid city.” he starts to just rant about things he doesn’t like and things he wishes were different as he clinged to Bunni. After a few minutes of talking he says something he didn’t really know had any weight to it “I don’t know how I’m going to live by myself forever… I don’t want to live alone. I want a big family. I want lots of family and by the time I’m super old I want to be able to talk to people. I’ll be sad if I’m alone forever.” he whimpers

“Oh bubba,” Their hand runs through his hair, holding him close. “You’ll get a big family, you grow up and the manor is always noisy, and you’ll have a fiancé who adores you completely.”

Bunni presses a soft kiss to the top of his head.

“It’s lonely now, but you find us all, or we find you, and you get your family.”

“Do you promise?”

“I promise.”

“Okay.” he hides his face in the crook of Bunni’s neck “Can you take me home?”

“To the manor?”

They pick Bruce up and carefully stand, holding him close.

“mhm. my manor.” he wraps around Bunni as he’s picked up

“Okay, I can do that.”

They make sure to be comfortably carrying him before they start to walk, heading to Bruce’s manor.

“Can you stay with me when we get there?”

“Of course I can, Bub.”

“Thank you..” he rests his head on Bunni’s shoulder as they walk

“Always.”

They continue to walk, soon arriving at the manor and pushing open the entrance doors.

“Do you want to go to a specific room?”

“Mhm. My room please.” as they walk in, it’s clear that this is a very different Manor though to Bruce this is entirely normal. There’s no big family portraits or random art on the walls, there not any random furniture about and the manor almost looks unlived in. There’s not life in it. Not like the manor Bunni knows. Everything had a place that it belongs and bruce makes sure it stays there because nothing can change from before that night. Everything has to stay the way it was otherwise it’ll be ruined. Everything he had with his parents will be ruined. At least that’s what he thinks “It’s upstairs.”

Bunni’s eyebrows furrow at the lack of colour- the lack of life they’re used to in the manor. This version feels so, cold, so empty.

Her version of the manor is so full of life, of colour. There’s noise and a feeling of home in every direction you look. This is just, a haunting echo of what might have once been a home.

“Upstairs we go.”

He lifts his head as they go up the stairs but looks confused as they start heading for the master bedroom. “Bunni, I don’t wanna go to mama and dad’s room. I wanna go to my room, please.” he says softly and tiredly

They blink at this, tilting their head in a confused manner.

“But, that is your room?” They’ve only know their Ma to have that room.

He points down the hallway to what would be Damian’s and then Bunni’s future room “Thatd my room”

“Oh.”

The confusion doesn’t clear completely from their face as they start heading to the room that will one day be their’s after it’s Damian’s.

As they go in, there’s a full size bed in the corner and a desk across from it. Posters on the walls and toys in various places. “This is my room.”

Bunni looks around with clear curiosity,

“It’s nice!”

“Thank you.” he yawns

Bunni moves to the bed, pulling back perfectly tucked in covers to lay Bruce under them.

Bruce gets comfortable in his bed and looks up at Bunni “Are you leaving?”

“Do you want me to go?”

They softly card a hand through his hair,

“No.” he leans into Bunni’s touch

They sit carefully on the bed, leaning back against the headboard and keeps running their hands through the boys hair.

“Then I’ll stay.”

“thank you” he whispers “I hate being alone when I go to bed, Alfred normally sits with me.”

“Being alone is sad. Cold.”

They know how it feels, to be left alone- even unintentionally. A sort of chill seeps into your bones as doubt makes you question if anyone likes your presence.

“Yeah.” he snuggles further into Bunni, shaking slightly

Bunni hesitates before starting to hum softly once more, a tune different to the one from before. They hum a soft tune they no longer clearly recall the words to, one they remember from their Mama.

Bruce calms down ever so slightly at the humming, he likes this song. his body relaxes but right before he falls asleep his eyes shoot open like he’s forcing them too. “I don’t want to fall asleep.” he says in an small and scared voice

They blink before softly cooing, moving to drape their wings over Bruce like a blanket.

“Why not, fledgling?”

“Cause then I’ll have bad dreams” a problem he has every night. The nightmares are constant, and (as bunni knows) are apparent in his adult life as well.

“Sleep scares.” Bunni gives an understanding nod at this, a worried frown tugging at their lips.

“Yeah. I don’t like it. I always see him.” he shivers as he speaks and he speaks way too quiet for normal ears to hear.

“Him?”

Her head tilts, the question not one he has to answer- they would never force him to answer a question.

“The mean man.” bruce answers, holding Bunni tighter.

Bunni shifts to better hold onto Bruce, keeping him protected in their arms and wings.

“I see mean mean men in my sleep scares too.”

“You do?” he looks up at Bunni with glossed over eyes “Did- …Did they hurt your mama and daddy too?” he asks with a broken voice

“They- they hurt my Mama, and I’m worried they’ll come after my Ma and Pa. They still scare me, even if I haven’t seen some in so long.”

The don’t comment how one of the men to haunt them is their biological Father.

“Oh.. I’m sorry that they did that to your mama.” Bruce hugs Bunni with a sense of comforting him instead of taking the comfort like a moment before.

Bunni smiles and presses a soft kiss to the top of Bruce’s head.

“Do you want to try and sleep yet, fledgling? I promise I’ll stay.”

“Okay, I’ll try.” he answers but he doesn’t move. he stays right where he is in Bunni’s arms, feeling very comfortable.

They let him stay there, pulling him closer if anything else. They know how much they wanted any form of comfort at his age, and they’re happy to give as much as he needs.

He’s finally starts to fall asleep against Bunni, his body fully relaxing. He sleeps in Bunni’s arms for a little bit before the nightmare starts, back in the alley again. He relives it every night. He’s reliving it right now. He starts to squirm in his sleep and whine.

Bunni frowns softly before shuffling to lay down properly, pulling Bruce onto their chest like their Ma does to them, softly rubbing his back and humming. It’s not much but it feels like it’s all it can do.

After a few minutes of what seems to be a very unpleasant nightmare he wakes up with tears in his eyes. He takes a moment to realize his surroundings and then starts to cry into Bunni’s chest.

“I’m here bubba, it’ll be okay.”

He wants to say it is okay- but it’s not. But they at least know that eventually, things will be okay. Good, even.

“Just let it out.”

he holds on to Bunni tightly as he cries harder. “I- I hate it!” he heaves

he steps a little closer and looks at Bunni’s features, fascinated by their look. “You look really cool.” he didn’t think that was insulting so he said it.

Bruce gets comfortable in his bed and looks up at Bunni “Are you leaving?”

“Do you want me to go?”

They softly card a hand through his hair,

“No.” he leans into Bunni’s touch

They sit carefully on the bed, leaning back against the headboard and keeps running their hands through the boys hair.

“Then I’ll stay.”

“thank you” he whispers “I hate being alone when I go to bed, Alfred normally sits with me.”

“Being alone is sad. Cold.”

They know how it feels, to be left alone- even unintentionally. A sort of chill seeps into your bones as doubt makes you question if anyone likes your presence.

“Yeah.” he snuggles further into Bunni, shaking slightly

Bunni hesitates before starting to hum softly once more, a tune different to the one from before. They hum a soft tune they no longer clearly recall the words to, one they remember from their Mama.

They blink before softly cooing, moving to drape their wings over Bruce like a blanket.

“Why not, fledgling?”

“Cause then I’ll have bad dreams” a problem he has every night. The nightmares are constant, and (as bunni knows) are apparent in his adult life as well.

“Sleep scares.” Bunni gives an understanding nod at this, a worried frown tugging at their lips.

“Yeah. I don’t like it. I always see him.” he shivers as he speaks and he speaks way too quiet for normal ears to hear.

“Him?”

Her head tilts, the question not one he has to answer- they would never force him to answer a question.

“The mean man.” bruce answers, holding Bunni tighter.

Blinks

“Small Ma.”

Bruce scoots back, slightly frightened of the new person. He’s not very good with meeting new people yet. “Wh-What?”

Bunni coos softly before slowly moving, tucking their wings close to their back and sitting on the ground to appear smaller, less threatening.

“Hi.”

“Hello.” he says quietly, standing a little straighter. this person seems nice but why do they have animal features? “What’s your name?”

“Bunni.”

Their head tilts curiously and they tuck clawed hands under their legs, staying where they are sitting.

She coos softly, wanting to just reach out and tuck this smaller version of their Ma away to protect him and keep him safe. But they stay where they sit.

“Nice to meet you too, Bruce.”

It’s weird to call a version of their Ma anything but that.

he steps a little closer and looks at Bunni’s features, fascinated by their look. “You look really cool.” he didn’t think that was insulting so he said it.

They blink before preening at the compliment, feathers fluffing slightly before settling once more.

“Thank!”

“You’re welcome.” he reaches his hand out but quickly pulled it back. he can’t just touch this stranger, that would be rude.

Bruce reached and grabs Bunni’s shirt, quickly hiding in his chest and tears well up in his eyes, his breathing starting to become jagged

They don’t hesitate to hug him close, tucking his head under their chin and softly rubbing at his back. It’s quiet for a moment before Bunni starts to hum the tune their Ma hums for them.

Bruce freezes for a moment before starting to cry suddenly, the humming seeming to almost make it worse. He pulls back and looks up at Bunni while crying “You know mama’s song?” he says weakly

The humming dies in their throat with a whimper, suddenly remembering how you Bruce is, what would have happened recently for him, still fresh in the forefront of his mind.

Bunni gives a small nod, reach out to softly wipe his tears and adjust his fringe with careful movements.

“My Ma sings it to me, he learnt it from your Mama.”

He leans into Bunni’s touch, trying to calm down thought it’s not really working “Your ma knows my mama?”

They nod softly, holding him even closer.

“I’m, from a time ahead of yours.” They start with softly, trying to decide if they’re allowed should tell him of the family he’ll one day have.

“Oh. Okay..” he leans back into Bunni, hugging her and holding onto their shirt tightly

She gently runs a hand through his hair.

“Your Mama is my Ma’s Mama… it’s how he knows her song.”

Bruce makes a confused noise. He doesn’t have any siblings so that doesn’t make sense unless he was Bunni’s ma but that also doesn’t make sense “Huh?”

“You. You grow up and become a dad, and my Ma.”

They distantly realise maybe they could better explain this, but words were far from their strongest trait.

“Oh.. uhm okay.” it doesn’t make the best sense but it explains how Bunni knows his mama’s song. He wraps his small arms around Bunni and clings to him “I want to go home.”

Bunni holds him close, chittering quietly. It’s easy to figure he was probably talking more about the people he considered his home rather than the manor.

“I’m sorry…”

“Oh bubba,” Their hand runs through his hair, holding him close. “You’ll get a big family, you grow up and the manor is always noisy, and you’ll have a fiancé who adores you completely.”

Bunni presses a soft kiss to the top of his head.

“It’s lonely now, but you find us all, or we find you, and you get your family.”

“Do you promise?”

“I promise.”

“Okay.” he hides his face in the crook of Bunni’s neck “Can you take me home?”

“To the manor?”

They pick Bruce up and carefully stand, holding him close.

“mhm. my manor.” he wraps around Bunni as he’s picked up

“Okay, I can do that.”

They make sure to be comfortably carrying him before they start to walk, heading to Bruce’s manor.

“Can you stay with me when we get there?”

“Of course I can, Bub.”

“Thank you..” he rests his head on Bunni’s shoulder as they walk

“Always.”

They continue to walk, soon arriving at the manor and pushing open the entrance doors.

“Do you want to go to a specific room?”

Bunni’s eyebrows furrow at the lack of colour- the lack of life they’re used to in the manor. This version feels so, cold, so empty.

Her version of the manor is so full of life, of colour. There’s noise and a feeling of home in every direction you look. This is just, a haunting echo of what might have once been a home.

“Upstairs we go.”

They blink at this, tilting their head in a confused manner.

“But, that is your room?” They’ve only know their Ma to have that room.

He points down the hallway to what would be Damian’s and then Bunni’s future room “Thatd my room”

“Oh.”

The confusion doesn’t clear completely from their face as they start heading to the room that will one day be their’s after it’s Damian’s.

As they go in, there’s a full size bed in the corner and a desk across from it. Posters on the walls and toys in various places. “This is my room.”

Bunni looks around with clear curiosity,

“It’s nice!”

“Thank you.” he yawns

He waves back, not saying anything. He’s nervous around other children because he doesn’t know how he’s supposed to act.

She pulls a rock out of her pocket and hands it to him.

She was not socialised as a small child so she also was not aware of proper behavior

"hm."

He steps a bit closer and looks at the rock. “That’s a pretty rock.”

She takes his hand and puts the rock in it

"hmm." She pushes his hand towards his chest

he kind of looks at her confused but takes the rock “thank you.” he smiles

She nods and smiles.

he looks at the rock and puts it in his pocket. “My name’s Bruce. What’s your name?”

She tilts her head, "hmm.."

She points at him and then herself

"...hm."

he tilts his head back in confusion “Huh?”

Her brows furrowed, she points at herself and does an asl 'c'

“Oh! Your name is ‘C’?”

"...hm..." That wasn't quite right but it was good enough for her

“Do you know the whole alphabet? So you can spell your name?”

She shakes her head

"hm."

“I can teach you it if you want! I’m learning asl right now and I know the alphabet.”
