I went on a date with a guy on vacation from Switzerland a couple years ago, and had almost this exact conversation with him when it came time to pay for the meal. He knew tipping was part of our culture and always left a few dollars because, as he said, “your minimum wage is so low compared to everywhere else” and I informed him that servers make less than half of minimum wage and the rest comes from tips, and he was horrified. Like he had just witnessed a murder. He about emptied his wallet out on the table and vowed to tip 25% anytime he was in America. As someone who has worked as a server/bartender, I know a lot of folks in our industry don’t like serving foreign customers because they don’t tip well/at all, but it’s because we’re the only country that does things in this fucked up way, and they truly don’t know that in many places, people are making $2/hr. Like, yes, sometimes you can get enough tips to be making $30+/hr, but then there’s all the side work you have to do that nobody tips you for, the hour before open/after close where you are prepping and cleaning, the complete lack of breaks despite it being illegal. The best industry job I ever had paid me the full minimum wage instead of the server min. That’s extremely rare. I wore the soles completely off my shoes and destroyed my knees and had no social life for an industry that considers $10/hr to be a crazy high wage.

5/6/2021 Today in Rio de Janeiro, the police massacred 25 Black people from the favela in violation of a court order. It is one of the city’s most deadly attacks.

In a barbaric and dehumanizing display, one of the police officers propped up a dead Black man on a purple plastic garden chair, with one finger placed inside his mouth.

There were executions of people who had already surrendered. Please pay attention to Brazil. Please pay attention to these Black lives. Please. I am begging you. They are Black lives that mattered.

It’s ALSO worth saying that police dogs serve a significant role in worsening police brutality. A dog trained to attack a human will maim them. A cop looses a police dog on someone, and that person is expected to peacefully cooperate while a dog is trying to tear their limbs off. It is very easy for those massive wounds to get infected. It is an absurd amount of violence. And beyond the initial attack, the fact that a “poor sweet innocent doggo” did this is used to excuse that brutality in court. Especially if the victim, panicking in the moment, lashed out at the dog. As this website has demonstrated many times, majority-white juries have more sympathies for injured dogs than the people of color who are most often victims of police brutality. So they’re not just systemic animal abuse, they’re also a tool for increased police brutality and to excuse

Yeah while it definitely sucks that dogs are abused by police, I definitely agree with the replies here that the focus should be on the fact that they are used as horrific weapons to brutalize people.

In addition to using dogs to just straight up maul people, police use dogs as detectors for reasons to arrest you, and police frequently arrest people even if the dog doesn’t find anything but sent up an alert. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that dogs are dogs, no matter how well trained and will fuck up frequently. There’s been investigations that show police dogs are more concerned with pleasing their handler than actual evidence. Which makes sense, a dog doesn’t actually know what the significance of cocaine is, it just knows that sending alerts when their master is looking for things gives rewards.

It’s because “stop Asian hate” is empty. It doesn’t go after the root cause, which is the state and its institutions.

“Hate” implies interpersonal feelings and individuals, so the message is, “Oh! Just don’t be a crazy person and hate crime Asians” and the work is done. When Asian racism isn’t just hate, it’s a deliberate narrative crafted to justify imperialism and war.

The U.S. killed millions of Asians overseas. The only way you can maintain public support for that is by dehumanizing Asians at home.

But “hate” doesn’t address any of those systemic issues because you can just reduce it to “a bad apple”. And so the white corporate media can weaponize this to their advantage by saying, “Oh it’s just a black vs. Asian issue” all while leaving the larger systems of white supremacist violence intact.
