2. Time Spirits/ Life&Death Spirits
The names that the spirits have based on their color was what they gave themselves. It’s part of their humanity shining through and the Life and Death spirits didn’t mind. In fact their names were also given by the Time Spirits as well. (All these names are words in Japanese, take it as you may, that language just sounds beautiful to me!)
None of these spirits shouldn’t meddle with time flow. If they choose to use their powers to disturb the flow of time, they will get punished for it. Depending how severe their involvement was, their punishment might go as far as the Life and Death spirits damning them.
Future Spirits - Mirai/Shorai
-Translated to English Mirai means Future and so does Shorai. Mirai is the blue one and Shorai the purple. They keep future part of time intact and keep everything that is to come, still coming. Their core ability is to being able to see in future, all the different outcomes. This knowledge they aren’t allowed to share with other spirits apart from their own type. It is a punishable offence.
Present Spirits - Kyo/Ima
-Translated to English Kyo means today and Ima means now. Kyo is the red one and Ima is orange. Their responsibility is to keep the present time flowing. The different between keeping present time working apart from past or future is that if something happens in present, everything stops. The present spirits are the most important Time Spirits and if they fail to do their job properly, or abuse their powers, they will nearly always get destroyed, no chance to stay as a damned spirit. Present spirits are physically intact with the time so even keeping themselves safe and sound is one step to the right direction.
-Translated to English Mae means before and Kako means past. Mae is yellow and Kako is green. It’s up to them to make sure the past doesn’t fall apart. If the past falls apart it’s gonna destroy rest of the time like domino effect. While messing up with that job isn’t as dangerous as it is being a present spirit, its still not good to use your powers for yourself. Past Spirits core ability is to have a perfect memory about everything and anything that has happened. They can tap into anytime that is considered past. Basically they are all knowing spirits.
Life and Death Spirits Shi/Inochi
-Translated to English Shi means death and Inochi means life (surprise...). Shi is the black one and Inochi is the white one. They are the ones who designed the looks of the spirits. Different realms have different looks, or that is believed. Shi and Inochi are the guiding ones and they are the ones that are believed to be impossible to destroy. They are as one would say “Gods”. They can take whatever form they wish but they can’t do anything that is outside of life and death. No spirit can turn into Life or Death spirit.
Technically all time exists at the same time and everywhere. Past, future and present, all exist constantly. It is hard to translate what these spirits feel or do. It’s their world and most of it is still a mystery.
