201029 HONNO - EYESMAG Interview:Ā āWavyās Graphic Designer (Visual Director); Honno Interviewā
Q. The recent recruitment of artists from the label āWavyā which is led by Colde, has further revealed Honno as a well-known figure to many. Itās quite uncommon for a Graphic Designerās name (thatās not a musician) to be added into the lineup.Ā
H: I have been working with Colde since 2016, which was way before the label āWavyā was even established. Our first work together was the album cover design for Colde and Crushās single album āYour Dog Loves Youā (2018). During that time, Colde expressed his opinion on wanting to create a label that could kind of serve not just as a āMusic entertainmentā but also as an āArtistā agency label. Colde asked me if he could recruit myself and I said āyesā without any hesitation. So far weāve continued to work together since then. Before I was announced to join Wavy, I was already Wavyās visual director. As of recently, we wrapped up everything we needed to and made the announcement.
Q. So you were an unofficial Wavy member?
H: Thatās right, weāve (Colde and me) known each other for the past 4 - 5 years when I wasnāt a Wavy employee yet. But Iām now part of the company.Ā
t/n: Colde and Honno were also in the same company before as well which was HIGHGRND.
Q. You mentioned that you are the visual director of Wavy. What type of work did you do?
H: I have been working on the album covers, physical album(s), teaser images, LP designs for the labelās musicians, and Iām still in charge of it now. But of course, it is not a must to work with me every time. Depending on the type of work, if thereās another designer who fits the concept or colour choices better than I can, then I recommend that designer to them. I also designed the current Wavy logo and the merchandise goods. We (Wavy) did not make the clothes ourselves but I worked on the graphics that are printed on clothes and other merch products.Ā
Q. It seems pretty evident that many of the album covers youāve previously designed, resembles the musicians style. Perhaps, would you say those designs are a result of immense research on musicians and albums, or rather is it a projection of Honnoās design style. And what kind of style direction is it?
I believe that both directions harmonized together very well. For example, pastel-toned soft colours are often used in paintings. In fact, pink is my favourite colour which is evident in Coldeās [Love Part 1] album cover. I would say itās one of my most memorable work, yet took the longest to design. If you look at the album cover, thereās a big heart (in the middle) but frankly enough I didnāt think like āIāll just draw a heart since itās an album filled with love songsā. However the heart was actually made by cutting and pasting pictures taken by Colde himself. Thereās a saying that āall that remains are picturesā. So Colde just took photos to record his daily life. And when he collected all of them, they were just all scenery photos based on āLoveā.Ā Which is what I also wanted to express (the concept of Coldeās Love Part 1 album).Ā
Q. Do you have a certain approach of expressing āLoveā in your work? And Iām also curious if you think āLoveā exists in the way you look at the world?Ā
H: Not really. What I tend to focus on with work is, to try and fully express the emotions I feel within that moment. And I expressed what I felt clearly when I worked on [Love Part 1] album cover. Thinking about it now, I donāt think I would have had the guts to make another album cover of [Love Part 1]. Thatās just how I feel right now. So if someone asked me to convey the feeling of āLoveā as a colour, I would answer āblueā instead.

COLDE - LOVE PT. 1 [NOTES]
What could love be? Iāve always wanted to sing about love. When I thought about love, there were many stories and thoughts that I couldnāt express all at once.Thatās why in life, I felt that āloveā should be addressed for a long time, through making music and singing. I will continue making my next album(s) with the concept of Love and name it [Love] again in the future. For this album marks the beginning of the series of Love. I expressed āloveā very directly with confidence. With this album I tried to be honest without twisting words, or comparing things without any difficulties. (for people to understand easily) Iāve portrayed this album like a fairy tale, how a child would understand āloveā with a pure heart (at a young age), then becoming that writer as an adult. (writing about love with more experience). I wanted to convey and sing that purity of love from my heart, directly through music. I donāt know when these feelings of love reached me while making this album, but Iām sure through the emotion and time I want to see love from the perspective of an innocent boy.I wish listeners can look forward to how oneās heart will mature and grow in time. How a person can learn to express and renew love once again in the future.I hope these songs in this album will almost be like beautiful music that fills a background of any place (background music). So therefore many people can paint love in their own way. 1. Love is a Flower Softly the wind pierces through a sound of a whistle. As I walked on the street I suddenly thought about how the feeling of love can be made at any place and time Then I realised āloveā resembled like flowers blossoming and falling. I wonder what has become of the seed and the compost in a handful of soil. Our skin touches deeper to the roots of our hearts, As light and water take turns, the petals and fruit have already bloomed after you left. But time has passed, falling like a flower. If you have a hurt love. My Dear, hold this poem close And hope that love blooms flowers again. 2. Love makes me jealous(ķ“ģ§ķµ) This song tells a story of jealousy and greed due to love, written from my perspective. Jealousy is not a feeling that youāve fallen out of love, but one that confuses us. Itās a role that brought out a side of myself that even I didnāt know. I thought about the way to solve jealousy and the thoughts that follow it And so I developed those thoughts and made this song. If you have ever been struck by jealousy whilst in love, listen to this song! I hope it helps you a little bit. 3. ģ¬ėķ“ (I fxxking love you) ģ¬ėķ“ - I love you, A phrase that expresses love accurately. But how can I express love as a word? When you worry about something and then end up solving it ironically and you scream your heart out, itās that kind of honest and foolish song. I donāt think itās easy to measure the depth of something if you do it with all of your heart.I hope that a lot of people can sometimes take the chance to express their feelings more directly. That way the complicated problems surrounding us can be simplified. 4. WA-R-R (ģė„“ė„“ ā„) I think itās one of the happiest moments in the process of being in love. Do you ever feel anxious, hurt or worn out, when you see a possible rival ? A precious heart is so beautiful. Itās as if a young child wants to protect something weak and small. Many people can experience that with a beautiful heart and attitude, and I hope that they can experience and protect love once again. 5. Scent (ķ„) Scent is about remembering and recording an atmosphere and scenes (sight) in light and colour. Noises heard, exchanging of words and the scene within the moment. Those are the things that get us deeper into our minds. As it penetrates into our memory. 6. You donāt need my love? (ģģ“ė ė¼?) The actual translation is āYou donāt need meā as the title implies, itās a phrase I happened to come across by chance.Itās like weāll never know what word was in front of the phrase? I think thatās why the question came to me more intensely. If I exist to someone, Itās not easy to get used to disappearing.Thatās why this question itself needs an answer. Or maybe I just want to be the āanswerā to someone. 7. Endless Love From track one āLove is a flowerā to āYou donāt need my loveā, I sing the process and flow of love. For the final matter, I want to talk about, as the title says āthere will be no end to our love.ā (our love wonāt end) With that hope, I will continue to sing about love. 8. Donāt leave my side (ė“ ź³ģģ ė ėź°ģ§ ė§ģģ) This last song is like a letter that I couldnāt send. So for a long time I want to put it away and then take it out. Iām truly happy and treasure that Iām able to put a song that I cherished and listened to and sang a long time ago into this album.Ā
