he hadn’t expected to actually get the drink, but he’d also never been one to turn down free stuff, either. “thanks,” he answered with a surprised little smile, taking the iced coffee when it was handed over. that same smile grew into something far more smug when georgie decided to give up her free time as well. “you’re not gonna come kick my ass tomorrow ‘cause you got in trouble for dipping out early, are you?” he was mostly joking, waiting a beat before letting out a gentle chuckle and shaking his head. “lets go outside,” he suggested, thumbing over his shoulder to the front door of the shop. “it’s been crazy sunny today.” and even as he took a testing sip of the iced coffee, gus really just wanted to light up a cigarette.
“ of course. ” she never minded giving her friends free drinks, and so long as she didn’t go overboard with it, she wouldn’t get in trouble. at his comment, she shook her head, her blond hair flying around the sides of her face. “ i would never, ” she sounded aghast, as if he actually thought that was something she would do. “ alright, let’s do it, ” she agreed with a nod of her head. “ it feels like it’s been ages since i’ve gone outside. it’s only been, well, maybe six hours, but honestly. “ stepping outside, she turned her face upwards towards the sky, she closed her eyes feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin. “ if only it could be like this every day. ”
winnie shook her head, waving her hand. “surprise me” she said, leaning against the counter. she tapped her chin. “i’m thinkin’ sweet enough to kill me possibly,” she murmured. winnie always had an intense sweet tooth. “you’re a life saver, george.”
“ that’s all i needed to hear from you. ” georgie gave the other a solemn nod, her expression earnest. she turned back to the espresso machine, reaching for the bottles of caramel and chocolate. she drizzled them in the cup before pouring in the milk and adding the ice. she pulled the shot of espresso from the machine and then poured it over the milk. for good measure, she added a drizzle of simple syrup. “ if this isn’t sweet enough, i don’t know what will be. ” she held out the drink. “ what’s the urgent need ? you running on fumes or something ?
winnie rushed into the shop, pushing passed people and giving them a look when they seemed like they wanted to speak up. she made it the counter and waved her hand. “georgie- george! i’m in serious need of some sugar. please tell me you have something for me.”
and just like that, all the other patrons were forgotten ( as was that iced coffee, placed down and left on the counter ). she grinned at winnie, nodding her head. “ i think i can do that. do you want it hot or iced ? ” she stepped behind the espresso machine, preparing a shot of espresso. “ and how much sugar are we talking about ? sweet like me, or sweet enough to get a cavity ? there’s a difference. ” she looked at the other girl with an intense determination.
alma pops another bubble and gives her an incredulous look, “you’re kidding, this stuff is awesome. this is real, raw music.” despite her words alma isn’t surprised at the other’s music taste and laughs a bit, “i can see that. i listen to a lot of madonna when i’m drunk.” she walks over to another pile of records and pulls one out to show her, “what about fleetwood mac. tango in the night? i’m a slave for stevie nicks without a doubt.”
georgie has the decency to look a little sheepish at the expression that has crossed alma’s face. “ i can understand the appeal — ” she can’t “ — but it just doesn’t do anything for me. ” with a shrug of her shoulders, she spreads her arms out wide. “ i just want happy songs and happy tunes. ” she follows alma to the other stack, peering over her shoulder. “ oh, now this i can get behind. ”
“and i’d assume that one would be the black coffee, huh?” he teased, shaking the cup to better distribute his ice. “how’s the day going anyway? i know it just got a whole lot better because, well, i’m here. but any soccer berating you over frappuccinos this morning? or have any coffee machine explosions?” he pulls a face as he glances behind her, looking at the ‘beast’ of a coffee maker they kept. “that would be one hell of an experience.”
“ the day has been dreadfully slow, ” she said, stifling a groan. “ honestly, including you and the lot here, i’ve seen maybe ten people all day. i’ve been here since six in the morning. it’s been six hours. i need attention and — ” georgie shook her head. “ — i’m just not getting it here. i’m not so sure why it’s not busy. ” she laughed at the idea of the day being wild. “ i almost wish someone had yelled at me. it would have broken up the monotony of the day. ” she reached over, patting the espresso machine. “ old faithful here has been surprisingly on his best behavior. ”
alma blinks a bit at the loudness of the girl before her but nevertheless a lazy smile tugs at the edge of her lips, bemused at her displays of enthusiasm. “oh yeah? death by caramel frappuccino would be a bad way to go. how do you come up with this stuff?” she lays an arm on the counter before her and sips at her drink, “it’s almost the weekend. got any big plans? i hear there’s gonna be a rockin’ party down at the quarry. and by hear i mean im throwing one.” she raises her eyebrows up and takes another sip of her drink, “you know how to mix drinks?”
“ ooh, that’d be a good name for a play, you know. dramatic. a little silly. sorta perfect. ” she clasped her hands together at the thought of it. “ i’m a dreamer, that’s all. wild ideas and fanciful speculations are my specialty. ” she picked up a rag from the sanitizer bucket, beginning to wipe the counter down. “ i was probably going to stay home and watch reruns with my roommate, but a party sounds like it could be fun. and of course, i can make drinks. coffee is for the daytime, and cocktails are for the night. ”
“any chance that i can have it, even if i didn’t order it?” he ignored any customer in the cafe who might’ve actually wanted to collect the drink, strolling right up to the counter with the cheeky curl of a smile stretching his lips. gus wasn’t really there for coffee at all — he got his fix of burnt beans at 7-eleven, thank you very much — and he made that much clear by raising his eyebrows at georgie. “any chance that you might be taking a break sometime in the next ten minutes, too?”
georgie smiled at the sight of gus but before she passed him the coffee, she waited a beat to see if anyone would come to collect it. when no one did, she held it out to him. “ it’s all yours, gus. ” she looked at him with bright eyes. at his question, she glanced at the clock on the wall above the door. “ i’m not really supposed to take my break yet, but — ” she glanced around, seeing the other barista at the register “ — i could probably get away with it. ” she took her apron off, hanging it on a hook on the wall before stepping out from behind the bar. “ half an hour and i’m all yours. ” she smiled up at him.
“For Amelia, of course,” she said, grinning and giving one raise of her eyebrows. “Was that last bit part of a new script?” Amelia could imagine it; Georgie had played the role of an excitable barista for so long that she’d have little trouble tapping into it for a stage play.
“ yes ! iced coffee for amelia. ” she brightened at the sight of her friend, and she passed over the coffee with a smile. “ it was sorta from a script ? something i wrote, though, not professional by any means. it was sort of a knights of the round table meets modern times meets coffee shop ... thing, you know ? i thought it was a fun idea to play with. ”
a baby pink bubble protrudes from her lips and explodes with a hearty ‘pop’ as she girl looks down at the selection of records before her. “lame. lamer. gag me with a spoon.. hm, this looks promising.” she raises the vinyl up into the air and flips it to the backside in order to read the songs listed on it. “and it’s the last one. a lot of people in town are going to be really pissed to see this go y’know.”
“ listen, it sure looks great, ” georgie was lying through her teeth, but she was bad at it. she always had been. it was a funny thing to be true for an actress. “ but it’s not really my taste. ” she hummed as she skimmed her fingers over records. “ i need something a little more fun, a little more poppy, you know ? something you’d hear on the radio and sing at the top of your lungs to. ”
alma approaches the counter, rounded black sunglasses still perched on her nose, partly obscuring the bags under her eyes from the party she attended the night prior. “alma.” she takes the cup from the others hands, feeling the wetness of the condensation that surrounds it, “imagine dying over iced coffee. no one in this town would even think of burying someone over such a bullshit death. too embarrassing.” she cracks a smile at this, knowing the joke was closer to the truth than to comedy.
“ alma ! ” her exclamation was loud and the rest of the customers turn to look at their exuberant barista. georgie, however, was unabashed and paid them no mind. she was excited to see alma, and that was that. why hide it ? “ hm. i think it could happen, though. maybe it was one more wrong thing in a series of wrong things. the tipping point, you know? ” sometimes, she could say wise things, but then — “ imagine actually dying from iced coffee. it’d be wild. someone drowning in it or something. maybe someone would decide to bathe in it and then it all goes wrong. jeez louise. ”
he looked at the drink in the girl’s hand and then lifted an amused brow. stifling a chuckle, holden went through the motion of looking behind himself - though he already knew he’d find no one. “uh…” he hummed, spinning around once more as he poked his tongue to his cheek. “it was a black coffee,” he told her, taking a step forward to receive the drink. “but this works too.” holden flashed a smile before grabbing a straw and pushing it through the lid. he then took a quick swig, nodding his head at the flavor. yeah, it would do.
“this loyal follower thanks you for gifting him with the blessing of coffee. it is an honor to quench his thirst.” he gave her a lopsided smile before taking another sip. “seriously though,” he paused for a moment, drinking more. “i really hope this is mine.”
“ oh — ” for a second, georgie’s entire demeanor deflated and she looked at the coffee and then to holden and then back again. a frown began to tug at the corners of her mouth , but he took the coffee and the all-too-brief moment of panic faded , replaced with a smile just for him. “ good, i’m glad, loyal coffee knight ” she laughed at his remark , her own , too , before resting her hands on the counter and leaning forward. “ i hope it’s just as sweet as you are. ” pulling her gaze away, she looked around the shop. the few people there seemed unconcerned with their conversation. “ it probably is. no one seems to concerned. ” she shrugged her shoulders. “ if they are, i’ll just make them another. ”
“want one?” she asked holding up a take-out box of donuts. “i somehow got talked into buying a dozen and i seriously can’t eat anymore of them.” one look into the box would show that half of the dozen were already gone, and dani was a bit of a donut snob. she couldn’t handle eating semi-stale donuts the next day. “i can’t eat all of them myself,” she added, a teasing smile on her face.
there was a shrill shriek and then georgie exclaimed , “ oh my god , dani . ” she rushed over to the younger girl with a grin , grabbing the box without any sense of humility. “ you very well may have just have cemented yourself as the world’s best roommate. do you know that ? the best. ” her own dog had come over to sniff at her feet, and georgie shooed her away. “ is this an apple cruller ? i could just die of happiness right now. ”
" i have an — uh — iced coffee for ... ? ” georgie trailed off as she looked at the drink she held in her hands with a startled expression, and then towards the customers in the shop with a wide grin. “ i don’t actually remember who it’s for , but if you know it’s yours , come get it , or forever be caffeine-deprived and pray to not perish. ”
( kathryn newton, cis woman, 23, she/her/hers ) GEORGINA SPENCER is known as THE ANGELIC around town. if their reputation precedes them, GEORGIE is DITZY and PASSIVE. but, in my experience, they’re nothing but OPTIMISTIC and CHARMING. looking through the st. redford records, they work as A BARISTA.
buckle up , kiddos , this might be the best ( or the woooOOOoooOOOOoorst ) intro you’ve ever read.
this here is georgina spencer , but call her georgie ( she might not answer if you use her full name because ... she forgets that’s her actual name ).
she is the youngest daughter of frankie and delia spencer, but has two older and two younger siblings. that said , she suffers severely from middle child syndrome. poor georgie. she was born in st. redford and has never lived anywhere else. if it were up to her parents , she’d die there, too.
anywho , she was severely unremarkable as a child. somewhat quiet , somewhat forgettable. her older siblings always outshined her , and it was always time to keep an eye on the younger ones. that was fine with georgie. sort of. she lived in her own little world. she’s a day dreamer. kind of forgetful , definitely ditzy. more often than not , she loses track of conversation and needs a thousand reminders for everything.
she found her niche when she was eight. a community theater was seeking children for the ensemble. her mother signed her up on a whim. it was fate. she never looked back.
the starstruck girl decided the stage was where she belonged. under the lights , with all eyes on her , she loved slipping into the skin of another. that was that. she decided she was going to act. there were no back-up plans or practical things to fall back onto. georgina spencer would be famous one day , she was sure of it.
but until that day came , she was stuck in st. redford. which was fine. she had things to do. like community theater. and reading all of the shakespeare plays she could check out from the library. and forcing her siblings into her own made-up plays.
when she graduated high school , her family didn’t have the money to send her to a fancy school to study acting ( which was frivolous and fanciful in their minds ) but she had money saved up from babysitting and summers life-guarding to go to community college. there she studied ( what else ? ) theater.
since then , she’s been working a bunch of part time jobs. she’s saving money to move to hollywood. she still is riding the dream she’s had since she was eight. she’ll get there one day. she’s sure of it.
so that’s georgie’s background. but what about her personality ?
think karen smith from mean girls , with a bit of emma woodhouse from emma and haley dunphy from modern family. she always means well. she’s the nicest person you’ll ever meet. but she’s absolutely hopeless.
she apologizes to inanimate objects if she walks into them. she says everything without thinking. she just is. she’s bubbly and kind and a little bit dumb. i love her. she’s my dumb baby with big dreams. also she’s easily taken advantage of.
also i feel like i should add this because you might be wondering : miss georgie spencer is a damned good actress.
connection ideas
okay , listen , i love my baby. but hear me out : someone who takes advantage of her. she’s naive. she’s nice. maybe your character convinces her they’re down on their luck and need money. georgie ? would give every penny that she could. maybe they want someone pretty on their arm and convince georgie they like her. she’d fall for it. she’s a hopeless ( emphasis on the hopeless ) romantic. idk the possibilities are endless !!! honestly !!!! just wreck her !!!!!!!!!
customers who come to her coffee shop just for her !!!!!! she sings for tips. she does dramatic monologues and soliloquies when it’s too quiet. honestly, she’s lively and bubbly and is probably about 95% of the shop’s atmosphere.
friends. i imagine georgie having a ton of friends. she’s nice and friendly and could never hurt a fly.
ok. listen. georgie falls in love at the bat of an eye. give me crushes and former crushes. honestly most of them ? are probably not reciprocated. but dreamy and heartsick georgie ? i need it.
georgie needs a best friend. someone she can eat ice cream with at midnight, crying over romance movies. someone who she can go to the roller skating rink with and will catch her when she falls. someone she can practice scripts with. someone she can be there for !!!!
